The musicians referenced are (Count) Basie, (Glenn) Miller, Satchmo (Louis Armstrong), Duke (Ellington), and Ella (Fitzgerald). Powerhouses of the Big Band era.
That is a hell of a list of names.
I missed Miller
Great music.
“Swing the Mood” by Jive Bunny and the Master Mixers is a medley of early rock and roll classics featuring Glenn Millers “In the Mood”
@@stephentaylor6617 I have never heard that song. Being that I am a huge Glen Miller fan. I need to give it a listen. Thanks for posting
it never fails -- in every video it is guaranteed that Lex will recognize the chorus and start singing along and Brad will look at her like she's crazy
I love it when that happens! 😆
Well Brad knows her best.😁
so true :)
Brad is starting to get used to the craziness
Such a sweetheart ❤️
This is truly Lex's song...you can feel it all over...
From 1972-76 Stevie was in a fucking zone that most musicians can only dream of. Everything he produced was gold. An incredible output of greatness in such a short time.
Brad&Lex, you'll love his"Don't You Worry About A Thing", "My Cherie Amour", "Living For The City" and about 30 more!! He is the GOAT's GOAT. If you do "Living For The City" it must be the full album version, never live. Very important part is omitted live.
I've always had a soft spot for "I was made to love her". I guess it still has that old Motown feel before he matured.
Pastime Paradise
Agreed. Many to choose from, and I include "Boogie on Reggae Woman" in that list!
@@UMfan21 That's my favorite one from Stevie also.
@@mkmstillstackin Yes definitely.
Brad is the only person who cannot feel it all over
LMAO
Lex had a good upbringing, she knows all the songs, props to Lex's parents.
This one of the most relentlessly positive songs I know. Love it!
I remember seeing him when he was around 11 singing and playing his harmonica
❤
This is one of a handful of songs that take me right back the public swimming pool when I was a kid in the late 70's early 80's! So fun- love it.
YES! Exactly! And that bass player is ridiculous! Nathan Watts...so great.
One of the best bass lines ever recorded. Plus, as usual, Stevie has perfect pitch. 🥰
I was a kid when this came out and I immediately loved it and became a Stevie Wonder fan. This song is just plain old fun.👍🎧
This is the one song that will absolutely, positively put a smile on my face EVERY single time I hear it no matter what is going on! It takes me to my happy place. 😊 Those horns are therapeutic. So glad they finally got to this one and that Lex enjoyed it so much!
Song's in the Key of Life is a must to listen to. Stevie Wonder is a true musical magician. He can make you take a trip without leaving the house.
Great album. "Songs In The Key Of Life" (He's singing about Duke Ellington) The instrumental part is amazing - that old style jazz.
Higher Ground and Living for the City are my favorites. He was truly a musical genius; I’m not sure but I think, taking into account different genres, knowledgeable critics would class him with Bach or Beethoven.
Higher Ground is one of those rare tunes with enough joy and hope to move me to tears. I love it to bits. I don't know why it's not played more.
Oh and I've just remembered the RHCP cover is an absolute beast!
I love Stevie Wonder like an annoying wasp loves picnics, and I'd class Innervisions as the pinnacle. Dare I even suggest it, Songs In The Key Of Life has some filler on it. Innervisions is a perfect album. Sublime!
I was 12 when this song came out in 1977. I can vividly remember listening to CKLW-Am Detroit/Windsor on my little 7UP can transistor radio in my grandmother's back yard. It was summer, she, my 7 year old sister and I were picking plums off the tree near the back fence while her white German shepherd dog ran around us. Those were great days. It's so cool that a song can take us back in time so easily.
Songs in the Key of Life is one of the best albums ever made. Such a timeless masterpiece
Love the horn section. I bought my first two albums in 76. Frampton Comes Alive and this one, Songs in The Key of Life because it had Sir Duke. The whole album is good.
I remember hearing this song as a kid very young. It was being played by the guys who worked at the gas station that was behind my house.
I also remember hearing Rubberband Man among many others.
Love Stevie Wonder. He has delivered so many great songs and if I can wish for a favorit to make a reaction video on I chose "I wish".
The best!
Sir Duke = Duke Ellington
Satchmo = Louis Armstrong
Ella = Ella Fitzgerald
Count Basie is mentioned. Also Glenn Miller.
Stevie Wonder's greatest song.
My all-time favorite song is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. From the lyrics, vocals and every note!
"Signed, Sealed, Delivered" or "Superstition."
Perhaps you guys should do a full Album review of "Songs in the Key of Life".....one of the best Albums ever!!!
This song hit number one on the charts in 1977. It was during this period that Stevie Wonder was sweeping just about every Grammy Award for which he was nominated, year after year after year after year. Finally, after he'd won seemingly every Grammy Award there was to win for like four or five years in a row, he finally didn't release an album one year, and whoever it was that won the award got up at the podium to accept their award for Best Album and said, "I want to thank Stevie Wonder for not releasing an album this year." It was hilarious. He was about as hot as an artist can get in the music business for about five years in the '70s.
Paul Simon
One of the best songs ever
I remember when my niece was a little kid she would love to sing this song .. so full of joy .. she moved away and for a long time I couldn’t hear this song .. it make me choke up and tear up .. it’s kind of weird to cry to such a beautiful happy song .. 💔❤️
living in my apartment in queens in the late 70s I was a toddler...my parents played all the cool albums and those are my earliest memories...this song and album were on alot..such nostalgia.
There was a Sitcom called "What's happening' that used this song a few times. There was a Heavy set Character called "Rerun" ( Fred Berry {RIP}) that Danced to it!
It was a GREAT Sitcom! "hey HEY hey!".
For a taste of what the song is about, check out Duke Ellington "Take the A Train", Count Basie "Jumpin' At The Woodside", Glenn Miller "In The Mood", Louis Armstrong "When the Saints Go Marching In", and Ella Fitzgerald & Chick Webb "St. Louis Blues", along with so many other greats!
Oh how I love Stevie!! Thanks for really feeling this. Thanks to your couchgang for shedding light on the references!
This is my favorite Stevie Wonder song and that's saying something because he has so many great ones
Songs in the Key of Life. Stevie is a national treasure.
One of the best songs ever. Period.
When the “oh,oh, oh” comes, hahaha!! Wakes me up to life every time! Thank you for the smile,,
The look on Brads face when your screaming and rocking out Lex. Lol
Lex, your enthusiasm is infectious. Keep the good vibes coming you guys!
Lex, I enjoy watching your joy as you listen to this. This song is pure joy.
Summer of 77 I'd here this everywhere I went. Something so magical about the 70s feel.
Classic song love it
Hard for me to think of a world without Stevie Wonder music. Lex, my brother, you need to dive into his musical history. It will make you feel more live. Love you guys!
This was 1977. We used to play this when it was new, me on keys, a horn band. Stevie went to school at the Michigan School for the Blind in Lansing MI, my hometown, with my cousin. didn't realize at the time, I was just a little kid.
I love watching Lex getting in the groove to the music and Brad giving her the sideways glance like "ummm...are you ok?" LOL.
and "You Haven't Done Nothin'"(irresistibly funky!)
One of my favourite Stevie songs. Undeniable beat!
#1 hit in 1977. I was 5, and I remember when it hit #1. Good stuff! 🙂👍
Songs in the key of life was a masterpiece no matter what genre of music you listen to one of the greatest albums ever made.
Gives me goosebumps every time, in the best possible way. 😊
this was one of those songs that i had heard a million times when i was young but never knew the name of it. It was like that a lot before the internet age.
More Stevie please! He has countless amazing songs and one of the most influential artists of all time especially for current music. A lot of his albums have him playing all the instruments. Bird of Beauty is my favorite song at the moment. Lex never stop being you 😂❤️
Being a native New Orleanian I can tell you it is all about the food, the music, traditions, and just having a great time. There are some incredible street performers that are just beautiful musicians. You can find them online and they will blow your mind.
that vibe just spreads happy
Stevie Wonder brings back some good memories of traveling with my dad
I worked at a store and a live performance of this song was used as a demo for a speaker system and one of my coworkers used to sing “Bacon feeling all over!” Instead of “they can feel it all over” and I think of that every time I hear this song.
I don't just feel it all over, I hear this sing all over too. Classic. Thanks, cats.
I was itty bitty when this song was (2 almost 3) but I remember hearing it a lot on the radio and dancing to it in my car seat.
Songs In The Key Of Life, is a brilliant album, and is still one of my favorites.
2 trumpets, a trombone, a tenor sax, a bari sax, an alto sax, a bass guitar, an electric guitar, drums and keys. I believe Stevie played most if not all of the instruments on the whole album recording.
Stevie Wonder's music is irresistible! (Sir Duke, Superstition,) and "You Are the Sunshine Of My Life" "Master Blaster" "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" "I Just Called To Say I Love You" "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" "Ebony And Ivory"(with Paul McCartney) "Livin For the City" "Do I Do" "Golden Lady" "Boogie On Reggae Woman" "For Once In My Life" "Did I Hear You Say You Love Me?" "Ribbon In the Sky" "Part Time Lover" "My Cherie Amour" "Higher Ground" "In My Brain" "That Girl" "Send One Your Love" "Land Of La La" "Overjoyed" "As If You Read My Mind" "Isn't She Lovely?" "Front Line" "Happy Birthday" (lots more)
I'm just amazed how they never seem intrigued enough to find out what a reference, a phrase or word, or in this case names mean in a song.
Especially when it's so easy to find out!
It reminds me of asking a younger worker at a store, where something is located, and they shrug their shoulders and say "I don't know" as they don't miss a step as they walk by me.
It doesn't even occur to them to go find out or ask someone else to show them.
@gigi v I've seen many other reactors stop and Google something. One even called his grandma!
I'm sure it has something to do with that the channel benefits from having a lot of comments.
The fact that they guess a song's meaning (which is usually wrong) and then ask for comments doesn't make sense to me.
It would be funny to see their reaction to their interpretation vs the actual meaning.
To me it just seems disingenuous.
Stevie is fantastic. Boogie on Reggae Woman, I Wish, You Haven't Done Nothin, Higher Ground, and so many more but the above I mentioned are truly outstanding🎶🎼🎵
It’s always a joy watching your reactions!
You all make me smile and are the perfect couple. Love your reactions.
I love you guys. It's a given that if I miss a couple days your song list will include great songs that I haven't heard in so long. Thank you so much Brad and Lex for playing so many obscure hits from the past! It's very clear that you do your homework consistently finding these wonderful songs.
Yes, one of my fav Stevie Wonder songs !!!
I love the instant when she recognizes the song and goes crazy.
I played trumpet in middle and high school band. This was my favorite song that we played.
Love love this song and Stevie Wonder!!
Sir Duke was Duke Ellington..
"Composer, pianist, and leader of his eponymous jazz orchestra from 1923 through the rest of his life."
DUKE ELLINGTON!
Black music in the 60's and 70's was stellar to begin with and for this era there was no better than Stevie Wonder, his great music came in volume and in quality.
Bout Time! I've literally been trying to get y'all to react to this since you started streaming. I suggested it in every chat. This reminds me of the bus in kindergarten!!
This song is off on of the greatest albums of all time. Songs in the Key of Life.
I think that Lex felt it and then some... but it is hard to sit still on this one. Thank you both, great song to do. Of course any of Stevie's songs are good. I got to see him live quite some years ago.
Brad “ok what is going on over here?” 🤣 Lex is a Star 🌟
I freaking love this song. Please do more Stevie Wonder
So much fun - especially Lex! Thank you! I truly cannot think of any SW song that I don't like... this is right behind "I Wish" in my favorites...
This was my favorite song at one point in my childhood.
Sir Duke was not just a popular musician, but an icon...a legend! Actual name he went by was Duke Ellington, during the Big Band era of the 30s and 40s. That also goes for all the other legends he named in the song.
Music. Food. Art. Community. These are the things that we should exult as a species.
Every little girl's favorite song for quite a loooong time !
Brad and Lex, if you're really serious about listening to and experiencing popular music throughout the years, this song is naming names you want to be familiar with. After all, these are the artists and musicians that influenced the performers of early rock and today. And there are sooo many more. Every decade has it's hitmakers and influencers. Take note, look them up, enlighten yourselves and you'll enjoy the music much much more. Too often I hear from you both "I don't know" and it's NOT coming from your outro. I appreciate your reactions and think it's great that you're checking out old music, but you're just scratching the surface. There's so much more to know, understand and experience. Good luck and may God bless.
It took me a week to learn this on the fuckin bass…SUCH A LOVELY GROOVE
I love when artists write songs for other artists that came before them, the shoulders they stand on. Duke, Ella, Louis, Count, Glenn their music is from the 1920s and 1930s.
From the album 'Songs in the Key of Life"--one of finest albums of music ever
Great reaction, Lex! You clearly felt it all oooooovver.
What is relating to is that we all can love music from many genres and time periods.
Love it! My favorite Stevie song!Keep On Rockin' 😊
Love Lex's reaction❣
Great reaction and thanks for sharing. This comes from the 3 album set 'Songs in the Key of Life' and every song on that triple album was amazing. Chris
Songs In The key of Life is a classic album! You guys pick some great tunes!
'I was made to love her' is my favorite Stevie song. Its kind of short but amazing. Worth checking out!
I really like listening to you guys!!! Smart, very creative and honest!!!😂😂🤣🤣😂😂✌✌
I used to request this every time I was at Funkademia in Manchester, UK. Always got everyone moving.
This was Stevie's tribute to the greats of the big band era, listing Basey, Miller, Sachemo and the king of all Sir Duke (Ellington). Then he praises Ella in the next line (Ella Fitzgerald). This album was just great -- every track was just perfect -- and so many different genres. Stevie IS a musical genius.
Stevie Wonder’s homage to the jazz giants of the Big Band era and swing era.
Signed sealed and delivered and isn’t she lovely are amazing Stevie wonder songs to check out.
If Lex loves "that big band sound," y'all gotta get into The Brian Setzer Orchestra. I'd push the Easy button and start with Jump Jive and Wail, then proceed directly to Switchblade 327. You'll love it.
Love your enthusiasm Lex. I love that sound as well. In fact, I started playing trumpet in public school in 4th grade and played it all the way until I graduated high school. I was first chair most of the time except for sometimes being demoted for a week due to pulling a prank on someone or something. But at any rate in high school, this song was so popular we learned it in marching band. And I loved playing this trumpet part so much I can't tell you. I mean I love the song as well and I already loved Stevie Wonder back then but and I didn't like marching band very much but I did love playing that. I believe we also played it in pep band or Stage Band. I mean I could pick up my trumpet today and still play that note for note, it just feels so good. If you haven't covered them yet, another fantastic one from around then is called I wish, man that thing is funky. But he's got so much good stuff, Signed Sealed Delivered from his early days of course but, I really really really really love his early 70s hit that I heard on the radio when I was in grade school, Boogie on reggae women. He's slurring his words like he's drunk but it's not, it's just a weird texture with very funky multiple layers of bass and synthesizer and it's kind of poignant, because he's talking about how he wished he could see these women dancing naked under the moon above, or in a different verse, just seeing two people truly fall deeply in love. And he's blind. So instead he makes this incredibly fun and contagious song. Here is a link to it.
m.ua-cam.com/video/6XauJUkYrso/v-deo.html
"Sir Duke" refers to jazz musician and big band leader Duke Ellington. The song is a tribute to some of Stevie Wonder's jazz musician heroes.
"For there's Basie, Miller, Satchmo
And the king of all, Sir Duke
And with a voice like Ella's ringing out
There's no way the band could lose "
That would be Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Satchmo is Louis Armstrong's nickname, Sir Duke is Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald.
Tight...perfect...gold.
Another one of my pick of songs to haved learn the drums such a happy song to play along with fore sure!
