The white box wired in series with the black capacitor is 5w sand cast resistor and it's not intended to protect the tweeter as such, but to attenuate the tweeters sensitivity to better match the mid woofer. The capacitor forms a simple 1st order high pass filter, and the design relies on the natural high freq roll off of the woofer used.
The cap does not prevent "overloading from the speakers". It's a 1st order high-pass crossover filter that blocks the low bass going to the drivers @ 6dB/octave.
most energy is in bass, prevent bass from going to speakers that can't produce bass is, in fact, preventing them from overloading. But good job being a pedantic twat.
Saw your comment on the last video but didn't want to say anything until this one came out :P Check if yours is the same under the grille (it goes straight back on)
The drivers in the Sony speakers could be upgraded to a good quality full range or coaxial and the cabinets can be stuffed with damping material and for sure they'll sound 10 times better when crossed with a sub in a 3.1 setup.
Well, yes, it IS part of the crossover as a high pass filter but it's still just some wound wire on a stick and not a protection circuit or something complicated
correctly. This is the simpülest kind of crossover. But the face is also correct . Because in some sysytems there are resistors just to adjust the tweeter to the other speakers. So the tweeter does not stand out when listening. In some systems the tweeter is way stronger than the other speakers and that must be adjusted.
It's magnetic shielding. The way it works, it's actually two identical magnets that are glued opposite ways to each other, but only one of these magnets is in path of the voice coil and determines the parameters of the speaker. Then they place a steel cap that helps short circuit the magnetic field a little bit, but it actually has to touch both magnets, so most of the space underneath it is actually those two magnets.
People still make these shielded speakers because not everybody who buys a speaker now will use it with modern equipment, someone might still have a CRT from the late 90ies or early 2000s. And those are just ferrite magnets, they're dirt cheap anyway, they can be made well from lowest quality of iron ore, they weigh quite a bit, and people often associate weight with quality, so that's another reason to leave a useless magnet on there. To elaborate on the explanation by The One and Only, which is correct, the way a CRT (vacuum tube) TV or monitor works, is by shooting a ray of electrons onto the screen and deflecting them with two electric magnets; however when you place a permanent magnet nearby, the electron ray gets deflected by the permanent magnet and making the wrong path, and it can further magnetize parts of the TV construction so the image is messed up even after you move the magnets away. To make speakers safe to place around CRTs, they shield the permanent magnetic field of the speaker. Speakers themselves aren't affected by RFI (radio frequency interference) from electronic devices, as they don't respond to common mode noise. Amplifiers however are by their nature quite sensitive to RFI, so extensive measures need to be taken in amplifiers to minimize interference that they pick up, but it's an unrelated issue.
The resistor is a form of Padding/Attention, to match the amplitude of the tweeter driver to other drivers such as midrange, resistors normally form a L-Pad or similar in correct crossovers, you wont find them typically used on woofers, as most the current is actually in lower frequency so would be a waste of power used on a woofer.
Those Sony speakers was from the Dolby Pro-Logic days. I remember I bought a set of those to go with my Pioneer home theater receiver. I regretted it. Spent $139.99 for that garbage, because I thought you had to special made speakers for center and surround. After hearing how crappy they sounded, I went to best buy and bought 2 pair of Yamaha bookshelf speakers with 6-1/2 woofers and 1 inch soft dome tweeters, for $59.99 for each pair. I used 2 for my surrounds, and 2 for the center. The sound was 100% better then those junky sonys, and $10 cheaper. Back then people where scammed into paying a lot of money because they thought you had to buy specially made center and surround speakers. A lot of manufacturers would use cheap parts, and charge premium prices. BOSE for example.
Jerry Spann Bose is still doing it lol. Sony I think has learned from their mistake, I own two of their sound bars. The HT-CT 80 and the HT-CT290. Both sound amazing but they aren't even close to being over priced. But looking at these old Sony speakers they truly do look like junk.
WOW! that Teac satellite is surprising. I have a really nice Teac center channel in a wood enclosure, removable grill, in a MTM arrangement with two very well made 3.5 midbass drivers and a decent Mylar cone tweeter.
i will say be on the lookout for episode surround speakers. i got the full set minus the sub and an onkyo sr-607 reciever for 60 bucks. the episodes are very good and they even have a pretty decently built crosover too. they also do sound phenomenal for sure. i was really after the reciever at the time and knew nothing about episode. they are also extremely well built and weigh quite a bit. i picked up a set of polk tsi300 towers as well for 40 bucks US. they sound pretty good as well. the drivers arent as high quality in the polks like the episode nor is the crosover. however, the polks also sound damn good. another thing you can do is upgrade some components in your crossovers to higher quality stuff which will make your stuff sound even better. yes you will def notice a difference as well. id say when you get a bit of cash pick yourself up a soldering station. you can go with a 2 in 1 solder station as well. did you build your subwoofers? if so are those dayton audio subs in the boxes? i bought a rsl 12s subwoofer recently which im not too happy with and may very well send it back. im going to build my own powered subwoofers. if i keep the rsl though i'll just build 1 sub. right now though rsl is sendin me a replacement amp and sub to see if it fixes my issue. if not im sending it back. i was surprised to see the quality of a few of those drivers. quite impressive tbh. keep an eye out on the used market as well. in the us facebook marketplace usually has some really killer deals.
"Perfectly sealed speaker enclosure" for a pair of wolfers in the high quality center channel speaker. Won't they interfere with each other? Seems they would need ported (bass reflex) or designed to be paired with a passive radiator. Passive radiator enclosure speakers have to to be air tight sealed to work properly.
In the LG's, there's a resistor for the tweeter. You should remove it, and keep it. They'll come in handy later as they're good for attenuating speakers. It's not a cap. Nothing ceramic like that is a cap. It's a bit cheap of them to make it look like it has two woofers, though. That's terrible for a center.
The LG was probably an Eastech driver. I have an Eastech driver with the same magnet, and basket, and different cone. Similar labeling on the back, too. It said LG, but it was probably a rebranded Eastech driver. Also you could say the Sony had a big magnet, but for a 2 inch speaker lol!
Can anybody here help me out with a Question i have? Now i have two 340watt Rms PA Mids but i run them off of a Karaoke Amplifier with max 160watts per channel meaning my speakers distort at max volumes etc. now i have a Mini/cd hifi amp aswell with 180watts peak aswell now i want to ask if anybody knows how i can connect these two Amps to have for example 300 watt per speaker but i don't have the cash to buy a Crossover so yeah i wanna know how i can connect them both if this is possible any help would be appreciated also i have two other 250watt Rms 15's and if i can connect these two amps could i connect all four or would the channels power be divided then?
I was surprised the canton was the only speaker that seemed to have any fluffy in it. Fluffy isn't expensive so they really cheeped out on a lot of those speakers. I thought all those drivers looked okay. It's easy to dump on the silver speakers because they are a tacky silver colour. I was most disappointed by the sony speakers as they seemed the absolute worst. Maybe the encolsures for the Sonys are okay tho. You would have to hear them. Big enclosures with no fluffy doesn't seem great tho. The lack of a crossover on the Sony might actually be an advantage. Crossovers are of course a compromise. Would be interesting to try the Sony enclosures with different drivers and some fluffy.
I used to have that exact same Sony surrounds and yeah they were like $30 extra when buying a Sony receiver. Yes, they suck but for surround sound it's not very high demand in sound quality!
Those LG are pretty tough. A person tried blowing one of those he could not blow it he had to pull it apart yet it still worked. LG I have noticed are pretty tough.
The surround on the Sony is exactly the same as the LG. They are both cloth surrounds, also the white "box" is to reduce the amount of power going to the tweeter. Also caps DO NOT protect the speakers, they are to cross over the woofer and tweeter. LGs are also pretty crap, the cantons are nice!
slowly becoming an audiophile and your channel makes me really wanna get into them. i got my first set of monitors for christmas and i love em, and imma learn so much from watching you.
the magnets were so big because it's a shielded magnet, it was designed to keep the magnetic field from affecting other devices like TUBE TV's, unfortunately because it's shielded, half of the mass of the magnet is another magnet that only serves to cancel out the field of the magnet. *not the actual size of the speaker motor magnet.*
TheSpeakerseeker Probably made by Canton themselves. I'm listening to my Canton Quinto 540's right now (on Sansui 8900zdb) and they're all Canton woofer, dome mid, and dome tweeter (both soft sticky type). Each one has Canton written right on the driver surround. So they make their own drivers, or did when these were made (81' maybe?). And they are top quality, and crystal clear with a 310mm woofer (12") that goes down to 22hz no problem. And a tweeter that goes to 30khz. They are very well made, and designed German speakers. Similar to Braun, and ADS in USA which used Braun drivers in at least some models. I highly recommend Canton if you see them for sale. They're a little bright though. At least mine are. So be warned. But you'll hear stuff in music you never heard before. They're very interesting. Especially for the $110 US I paid for them off Craigslist Boston. They make other small speakers that are nicer then these too with a 6in woofer. And waterproof also. The type you can mount outside for your deck/patio whatever.
If you're afraid of spiders, why do you disassemble speakers? Didn't you know that the return spring at the base of the cone is called "spider"? Also, Canton tweeter is likely to be titanium-dome dynamic or even metallized mylar, not silk dome. 19mm silk dome wouldn't have needed a diffuser cap on top of it.
18:50 sorry guys I know it's a stupid question but what's the purpose of sealing the case? If both woofers move the same direction wouldn't them create pressure?
the canton stuff looks great once you take the front cover off but the cabinets and covers look really cheap. shame they didn't put more thought into the external design.
do you still have those speakers? because I need one or two of them, because all of mine broke, except for one that I fixed over and over and over again.
I have those exact same canton satellite speakers except mine are black not silver and the crossover is different. I also have the original manual that came with them and there rated at 70w
Well, the sony center has double the size (changes response dramatically) and full wood enclosure while the back speaker looked to have a plastic front, still crap though...
Use the speakers in their original cabinets. Place the Bluetooth module inside and batteries, switches if you can if not put the batteries in the other one and run wires
matilija Theres another brand that's very similar to Klipsch (wich is German too I think) but I don't know the name of.. He has (maybe had) a subwoofer from the brand
The canton center Chanel is so coooolll. I have 5 of the canton surround speakers instead of four with a center Chanel. Not share what that’s about. Also, mine are black.
You could just solder a 3.5 mm TS plug to a short length of speaker wire, plug it into a Bluetooth receiver, connect the speaker wire to the speaker, then glue the Bluetooth receiver to the the back of the speaker. If you wanted to use both speakers, use a 3.5 mm TRS plug and glue both speakers together.
well yes but it will certainly protect the speaker if any large amount of dc current appears on the audio output unless it goes short along with the output transistors !
I have the full Teac set and most of the others, such as the lg, even that huge center channel speaker. Feels weird seeing some stuff you have also be in a video :P
I opened up one at my house and there was this silver thing inside. When I tried to remove it, it started smoking and a very bad smell. What is that part called?
It's a fallacy to believe magnet size/appearance is indicative of performance. Also, Canton speakers are known for their metal tweeters. The one's shown are clearly not silk, more likely aluminum.
The best subs I've ever owned or heard in 57 years of listening experience are SVS brand. (SVSound-dot-com - note only two "S" in site name) I have a pair of their 12" sealed subs on my main audio system, paired with Polk RTi-A9 front towers. The towers were already excellent sounding units which went all the way down to 18Hz, but when I added those SVS subs crossed at 80Hz, the bass became cleaner, faster, more accurate, and VERY tight. The subs took my already excellent bass extension into the realm of "OMG! This sounds incredibly spectacular!" You can actually hear the difference in sound between different kick pedal materials being used by the drummer. For example, the speaker testing song "Bass I love you" transformed into a fully body sensory experience which gives people goosebumps every time I play it. These subs produce more accurate bass than ported enclosures, while somehow still extending well below the range of human hearing in frequency response. With other subs, I always had to trade off accuracy to get those lowest frequencies. With SVS sealed subs, there is no tradeoff. Frankly, before buying these subs, I didn't believe having both extreme accuracy and extreme low end extension in the same sub was even possible. Basically, It's like having perfectly timed earthquakes mixed into your music and movies. In fact, the low frequency sound effects in movies are beyond incredible. At times, you wonder if your subs are cracking the foundation of your house. BTW, I don't work for SVS. I just became a huge fan once I heard them.
+Doublsmm I have 2 jbl 12" subs in a ported enclosure tuned to 32hz with a massive port and if I tap or push on one of subs it moves out why is it doing the opposite its ported

@@pretol7920 you can overload a speaker with any frequency. It's a crossover

Pcorf creations it's a lot of effort when you could just buy a ok 2.1 system for $80
That white Box was a resistor to change the ohm of the tweeter
nope. its part of the crossover

Shielded is also completely irrelevant now a days as TV's/monitors no longer use electron guns (CRT) to make a picture... that was so 10 years ago.
Another Dick Those make the same waves as an older TV, so the TV doesn't do anything weird.

"plastic domes" in speakers are often not mere dummies, but actually passive radiators to raise the frequency range of the speaker
You can find decent replacement speakers from Parts Express. Provided you have decent enclosures.
You might want to add a decent crossover for a few bucks on Ebay.

TheSpeakerseeker Probably made by Canton themselves. I'm listening to my Canton Quinto 540's right now (on Sansui 8900zdb) and they're all Canton woofer, dome mid, and dome tweeter (both soft sticky type). Canton does, no joke
Do you think Bose speakers are any good not the vintage stuff but the new stuff nowadays?
Daytons and Canton might be good when mixed together on surround sound.
True but it also could be a long magnet for mor excursion
Nice work. You encouraged me to make the move and spend some money and buy some woofers. Thx keep up the good work
that metal thing around the magnet is just for shielding, the magnet could be a lot smaller inside of it
If you're afraid of spiders, why do you disassemble speakers? Didn't you know that the return spring at the base of the cone is called "spider"?

they have the same LG speakers in my Local thrift store! do you think i should get them??:):)
speaker freaker no
5:37 - not a capacitor. It's a 5w resistor to set the impedance of the speaker unit.
What do you think of the Logitech z 906 5.1 system?
The Canton speakers were my favorite!
the canton stuff looks great once you take the front cover off but the cabinets and covers look really cheap. shame they didn't put more thought into the external design.
do you still have those speakers? because I need one or two of them, because all of mine broke, except for one that I fixed over and over and over again.
I have those exact same canton satellite speakers except mine are black not silver and the crossover is different. I also have the original manual that came with them and there rated at 70w
That Canton Satellite looked really nice!
WHY do you need a impact driver for those small screws?
Well, the sony center has double the size (changes response dramatically) and full wood enclosure while the back speaker looked to have a plastic front, still crap though...
Use the speakers in their original cabinets. Place the Bluetooth module inside and batteries, switches if you can if not put the batteries in the other one and run wires
Great for 2.1
if your not doing anything with the canton center ..i would love to have it :)
I have a little Question. Is the Pioneer HTP-206 a good system or not? For around 400 Dollar?
is these full range speakers ?
can you give me the brand of smallest one i need one for voice over works where i can found it online?
just so you know there are high quality paper surrounds look at the JBL 43xx series and the 44xx series they SOUND AMAZING

Those Canton Speakers are sold as Audio Source in the US...they are otherwise identical.
matilija Theres another brand that's very similar to Klipsch (wich is German too I think) but I don't know the name of.. He has (maybe had) a subwoofer from the brand
The kanton speakers said 10 watts if I'm not mistaken...
They said M 01 not 10 W.
I have a similar set of the cantons, and i use them for rear surround speakers, and they handle about 60 watts daily:)
What does the magnat size have to do with the driver or the speaker sound quality?
@Doublsmm why are you even using an impact gun in the first place???
The canton center Chanel is so coooolll. I have 5 of the canton surround speakers instead of four with a center Chanel. Not share what that’s about. Also, mine are black.
@ 5:37 not a capacitor, it's a ceramic power resistor
It indeed is
this is when i stopped watching and scrolled down to see if anyone noticed that before i leave this place..

"O MAI G0D DAT HAS TO BE DE BEIST SPEIAKER EN DEI VERLD"
the capacitor in the teac ones is probably for dc blocking the tweeter is just a piezo disc and doesn't need a crossover
thehappylittlefox aka benji Well that cap is simple high-pass filter for the speaker.
well yes but it will certainly protect the speaker if any large amount of dc current appears on the audio output unless it goes short along with the output transistors !
I have the full Teac set and most of the others, such as the lg, even that huge center channel speaker. Feels weird seeing some stuff you have also be in a video :P
is the teac any good coz i really like the look of them.
That is crazy how kanton was able to fit that woofer and a tweeter in that small enclosure
Do "bass I love you" on the woofers
on free air
4:42 did i heard right?
i wish u had the sony sub aswell
bcs i wanted to see what or where the actual sub was placed
I opened up one at my house and there was this silver thing inside. When I tried to remove it, it started smoking and a very bad smell. What is that part called?
In the Sony, the size of the magnet does not matter. The coil wire and the thickness/windings matter more (but of course this is horrible.
I once opened the fuse panel in my car and a spider had a nest in it and ran out. Scared the bejesus out of me.
the teac have eastech driver ! It s a pretty good brand
I am a chill dude. but SHILL!!! an impact driver for speakers? why do you think this would work?
Can you make a free air test of the lg please ?
It's a fallacy to believe magnet size/appearance is indicative of performance. Also, Canton speakers are known for their metal tweeters. The one's shown are clearly not silk, more likely aluminum.
i love you're videos,
Learn something new every time. HI from Romania :D
Nice 1..make video on sony satellite speakers (sony DAV Dz home theatre series speakers )
If one of your speakers has rubber grips on the bottom peal them up and screws might be under there
Nice video man I have 2 sony ss-h10's with 1 6 inch sub. my pas wont let me get another subwoofer, sadly...
I have got a 7.1 channel mordant short surround sound system like the canton speakers
Keep up the great work, I can't wait for these blowouts! (And you getting 1 million subscribers)
Would you send too of the LG Woofers to Germany?
whats wrong with foam surrounds? Its an old way yes but they stiull sound amazing with foam surrounds
good day , 600 watts subwoofer spearker brand can you recomend. thanks.
BillDem3D What about Axiom EP800?
I have ELAC sat speakers (also a german brand ) They have got a Aluminium enclosure ( my english is not the best i am from germany )
i picked up a real cheap pair of speakers from goodwill. and they look almost like those drivers
The Sonys have good boxes, just bad drivers, now if only if there were more holes in the Sonys for more drivers
I'd love to see a free air video!
Could do a wicked little bluetooth 2.1ch boombox from that center enclosure ❤
+Doublsmm I have 2 jbl 12" subs in a ported enclosure tuned to 32hz with a massive port and if I tap or push on one of subs it moves out why is it doing the opposite its ported
cantons are fantastic :D I have it :D p.s. center channel have 2 woofers and twetter (i didnt watch) Do air free video on lg speakers
The cup on the magnet is stamped mild steel, not aluminum.....aluminum would do nothing as far as magnetic shielding.
The "white box" is not a protection device. It's a ceramic 5W resistor.
what if u will put a tweeter on the u know woofer line and the woofer to the tweeter line
Did you just assume Sony is Chinese ??? It's Japanese !!
They are actually from Thailand
Samuel Coventry. Or Taiwan
