@@kjellrode2434 Me too. My kitchen wall line meets my bathroom sink wall line, then they go down both, and both clog, ever couple months, LOL. Am slowly going through the steps, and this video is starter. With two lines, both sinks, both meeting, both clogging, every couple months, snaking the common down line I guess is the trick, still fingers crossed this long range "works" or it's just a repeat problem. THIS VIDEO is beginner, doesn't get into snaking the wall line(s) which converge and clog, LOL.

Thank you! This video gave me exactly what I needed to know to complete the job of clearing our slow-draining bathroom sink in less than an hour. As a bonus, it turns out that the pull stop has never worked to seal the drain; it was connected, but not at the right angle. I was able to fix this as well. I really appreciate your taking the time to share your knowledge. Since I couldn't see what I was doing, the video was invaluable!

Thanks for taking the time to make the video. Truly appreciate the value it brings to homeowners. I would give two pieces of constructive feedback, not criticisms at all.
    1. Use gloves. Trust me, I'm not trying to be a nanny here, but just giving a public service announcement to anyone watching this. Drain and waste lines are the nastiest, most bacteria-ridden places in a home. You crack open a drain line & you are exposing yourself to a thriving colony of bacteria that is just looking for an open wound to get into and give you a serious infection. Don't handle drains or drain line content with bare hands.
    2. The method shown in this video is going to work for probably 75% of vanity sink clogs and is very valuable, with good explanations. The other 25% of the clogs are going to be in the wall and will require a snake to get blockage cleared. With as clearly as you explain things, it would be a great benefit to have you show them how to properly use a snake.
Again, none of this is criticism and I greatly appreciate the time you have put into your content to share.
    Cheers.

Nice video. My only suggestion would be to start with removing the plug and checking for the clog there. So often that completely solves my issues without the extra steps of removing the trap.

Thanks for making this video. I put in a maintenance request at my apartment building over a month ago for my clogged drain and they still haven't came to clear it. I've taken that pop-up stopper out. I now have a stainless-steel fine mesh strainer that fits into and over the drain. I now clean any hair out on an as needed basis. No more clogs. When I want a basin of water, I use an old fashion white rubber stopper. Simple, clean, and easy. Also, I run VERY HOT water down the drain for about three to five minutes in the morning and just before bed. I haven't had a clog in 5 years, or more.

  • @mooster47

The overflow from our air conditioner flows into a bathroom sink drain. Gunk builds up from that and clogs the drain at least once a year. I'm pretty sure it's not in any part of the immediate area of the sink plug or the trap, but beyond that, and the plumber uses a power driven snake at least 25 feet long. Just mentioning this because in houses that have a chronic problem with one drain, that could be the cause. They suggest putting bleach into the drain from the AC periodically to kill mold, but we're too old to mess around in the attic with bleach. In a previous house, this was an upstairs sink, and when it overflowed the first thing we noticed was water dripping through the ceiling downstairs - a nightmare! This video is very helpful for the type of problem it addresses.

When I reassemble these, I just let the drain pop up rest on the rod, I don’t capture it. This way it can lift out for easy cleaning. They are usually heavy enough to close and seal on their own, worst case I need to give it a slight push to seal on the rare occasion that I actually want to close the drain.

About 85% of the clogs are hair caught in the pop up. Just push down the knob so that the pop up goes up. After that unscrew the lever nut under the sink, pull out the lever rod, and remove the pop up. Clean everything up and reassemble.
About 14% of the clogs are in the tee in the wall. Unscrew the trap assembly and snake the sewer trap.
The last 1% is an actual clog in the trap. Just unscrew the trap, clean, and reassemble.😢

@@vjmacintyre : One of my bathroom sinks has a leak at that ball, I think. Is it hard to replace? I assume that to replace it as you did, the sink drain's tailpipe would need to be replaced with a tailpipe that doesn't have the hole for the ball. Unfortunately, my sink's tailpipe probably hasn't been removed in 50 years and its removal might be difficult or even break the sink. So I would be very interested in just replacing the ball if the ball is worn out.

I don't like those metal rods that lift the stopper. They can rust completely away. I recommend using a stopper that is pushed down to close and push again to open. Much better. I don't think most people even use the stopper to wash up with.

My clogs are normally on the other side of the 4-way where a snake cannot go. I use compressed air cartridges, usually 4, to unclog the pipe. This takes 2 people not one as the instuctions indicate. You need 1 person to hold the P-trap together because the compressed air from 1 air cartridge will disconnect the P-trap from the pipe coming from the sink or from the pipe coming out of the wall.

Be nice to know how to deal with old, metallic plumbing - the kind you need pipe wrenches to deal with. My bathroom sink is so old, it just has a rubber plug - which thankfully does not clog. The KITCHEN sink, however, is another matter.

Is there anything special you can do to minimize how frequently the drain stopper body accumulates the biogunk? This is what frequently interferes with draining in my bathroom sink. I've tried putting bleach down the drain every month and I have tried just running a piece of clothes hanger wire down trying to knock the crap down. The only true effective wayI've been able to do it is to pull the stopper out and scrub down the biogoo off the body (nasty!). But I end up with the problem redeveloping in about 60-90 days. Probably a development of spit, toothpaste, and little hairs from my shaving.

Those rods are always corroded and can actually disintegrate over time. Switched my sinks to pop-up drains which are not too expensive either.

THIS! Get the kind with the little basket built into the stem. Got a hair clog? Dropped some jewelry down the drain? Simply turn the cap until you can pull it out, remove the clog/jewelry, then put it back in.

i would get rid of the plug too. I would never see myself needing to stop up the sink with water.

Hey Adam, Do you read your e-mail? About a month ago I sent a question about your video on the A/C soft start kit. When you get minute, please check and see if you have it. If not is there some different addy I should use? Thanks - Jim F.
