will go through in some detail how I re-assembled the column. When accompanied by other reference materials, this video should be a nice visual aid in helping understand how these things work.
Please find and READ the Jim Shea Steering papers for a comprehensive guide - it's what I used here:

I am the President of your fan club. Thank you so much for your help.
My father used to own a company he was the only person in the County who could do columns..late 80s early 90s the were stealing Gm saginaws at a rate of 20 a day where I’m at..needless to say my friends this brings back some great memories going to fix stolen recovery after stolen recovery with my father growing up. Wouldn’t change those days for anything..the business served its purpose we saw the writing on the wall by way of key fobs etc. A lot of guys can take em apart not a lot of guys can finish em. Thanks for the video buddy.
Thank you for watching!
This is the only video that shows how to install the Steering column Actuator Switch on a 1977 Corvette that I could find, thank you! wish you did not speed up the video there but I got the just of it Lol
Best steering column vid I've found yet
Thanks much!
Wanted to thank you for your detailed assembly video. im doing an 84 corvette right now after its for E8 screws were loose! Swiss watch!!!! Thank You!!
Good video gave it a thumbs up! At (22:10) - Set screw to lock the center shaft for lock plate removal was just what I needed to know. Thanks for posting the video!
Where do I find that Allen head bolt
To lock the center shaft
Thank you it made my work alot easier by following your steps.
Thanks this video saved my bacon!
Thank you so much for this!!!
You just saved me. Thank you.
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it
Can't help to say that same thing! That little piece with the 2 brass prongs for the key buzz i couldnt remember where it went thank you!
@@vuccaduck7493 Yeah, mine just fell out on disassembly and I didn't see where it came from. Took a while to figure it out. Thanks for the comment!
Ha! I watched the entire video for the horn assembly. Then the back-order explanation. The joke's on Me!🤣🤣🤣Still a good video. Everything assembled like clockwork.
Thanks. Planning to show the horn when I finish making my custom steering wheel later this year. Come back and visit again!
Awesome video! Thank you!
Thanks for the info Mate. I'm trying to do the column on my sister's Trans-Am here in Australia. Still having a lot of trouble getting the pivot pins out. Can't believe how complicated these Chevy columns are! Funny this, they're almost identical on the outside to our HZ Holden columns. But the good thing is they have about a third of the parts inside...So much easier to work on. Seriously, could Chev have made these anymore complicated?...
a nightmarish contraption with cables going to switches, zillions of parts cluster-fuck engineering job.
@@jackmccauley5042 No shit! I've worked on this thing off and on for weeks now. I've had to pull it apart 3 times, and now something wrong internally. The shaft is now catching on something inside and I can't get the pivot pins out. They just spin in either direction and don't come out.
I have a 1982 corvette with this T&T Steering wheel. The ignition locking lever is loose and now i cant get the ignition to rotate to off. do i have to pull the column to diagnose and fix the problem with the lever?
You can get to ìt with the column in the car. Good Luck!
I am always amazed by Mark's knowledge and detail ability...could he be reborn as a starship engineer?
Hi, great video. I took my 72 column apart to change the lock cylinder. After putting the lock plate back there telescopic shaft is jammed in the bottom position and won't move. It moved freely before. Any idea why this could be?
I figured it out myself. I didn't see the groove on the shaft and when it was at the very bottom the retainer ring did not go into that groove, but rather pushed against the shaft and locking it. Maybe worth mentioning that it can't be in its bottom position when putting the retainer ring on?
Great video
Thanks!
@@Stoneface_Garage where did you find a tilt pin can't find anywhere I think it will help slop up and down
Hey mate, my steering shaft has collapsed. Do you know if there is a rebuild kit or something for it? I’m a bit lost and feels weird to just pull it out to the right length and leave it
@fletcherlesueur try ebay motors or junkyard. I know its Tempting to plug weld or drill in a shear pin or something
..
20:00 the key… if that is missing; does that mean the steering wheel will slide in and out without actually locking?
That's right
@@Stoneface_Garagethanks for the reply :)
Where is the telescoping feature?
@davidachten1162 It's the short outer shaft that slides out, tightened by the star wheel which is actuated by the ring just behind the horn.
I have a question, so I locked the steering in place without the C clip, but when I put it in, it easily comes out, is it suppose to hold the spring? Or is it suppose to be loose? Or does the plastic cover suppose to hold the C clip when it comes out? Or holds it in place? Or it’s suppose to not move anywhere? Pleaseee i need help.
The spring tension should hold the c clip until the retainer is imstalled.
Great video! Can you reshare the link that has the directions?
The site was shut down. If you send an email address I can send copies.
When you took out the center bolt that locks the telescopic from sliding, what does that bolt lock against to lock the telescope?
There is a wedge that rides in a tapered groove that jams the two shafts together
Very helpful video! On my own short upper shaft, I have the actuator rod and the wedge keyway, but when I tighten the bolt, it doesn't lock in place and seems as though the bolt isn't making contact with the rod to push it against the wedge. Any advice?
Assuming you have the correct length bolt...Check if you have any burrs in the slot or on the wedge, or the actuator shaft that could be holding it from sliding into a lock position. Add a little bit of grease to help it move (but not on the outer wedge surface.)
@@Stoneface_Garage thank you for the response. I was finally able to get a set screw in place to hold it. Turns out I just want tightening enough because I was worried about damage. Thank you again!
Can you give me the size of the alen set screw
Took mine apart. The wedge was removed from the upper shaft, I didn't note which way the notched side was pointing. Found your video and it answered a lot of questions for me, set up is same as mine, but you did not mention which way the "key" was to be facing. Notch to the driver or the curved portion to the driver?
If I get what you mean, the notch in the key has to face up (driver) to engage the lock shaft
Another quick question can you please help me with about the ball bearing rings? I’ve bought some new ones from corvette central and basically they were that hard to slot in, i had to tap them in with a hammer. The balls don’t spin and the plastic thing doesn’t rotate now that it’s in there. It’s almost like the metal ring around the plastic ring is too thick? Is that normal? Or is there something completely wrong with the steering column? Also does it matter what way it faces? It’s just sitting in there super tight.
You may have the ring or the race upside down
@@Stoneface_Garagehow do i know what way it’s suppose to face? One side has a more visible plastic ring
The two bearings should taper towards each other.
Hello; I am looking for a replacement part and hope you can point me in the right direction. In the column we have a three-way switch. As you know the turn signal lever is the headlight dimmer, whipper control plus cruse control. Now the little guy that has the dimmer, togal feature and little twist thing for the headlight switch. @ 16:22( the unit you were talking about) I am looking for it. Do you know where i can get pne from? Great video. Thanks!
Thanks. Best bet would be ebay motors. Mine did not have the cruise control option, but the inner switch is the same, only the stalk is different I believe.
im looking for the bearring kit you have
I don't recall where I got it. Try the corvette catalogs, maybe even rockauto.
Where did you find the tilt pin got a 69 can't find anywhere need it to take out last bit of slop in steering wheel
Didn't replace it, used what it had. You could lathe one up or add some thin brass shim bushings.
Nice video very detailed. I have a question pertaining to my 1980 Corvette. I some how accidentally hit the turn signal lever and it broke with the tip still inside. How do I go about trying to remove the remaining piece of the lever? How much of the steering column do I have to remove to get to that section?
Bummer. If you can't reach with pointy needlenosepliers, gonna have to tear down and pull the switch
If you search for "c3 corvette procedure for removing broken turn signal lever stub jim shea" you will find the procedure that GM themselves used to remove the stub. Or actually three different solutions depending on how it is broken.
I can't find the flat spring I believe is known as the ignition preload sector switch, any ideas about this part ? BTW, best video out there.
Thanks. Are you missing this or can't find it in the assembly? I think I put that section in fast speed in the video...I could post the normal uncut clip. That spring could be made from a small piece of spring steel if needed. It holds the sector and rack teeth firmly engaged. I suspect the operation would work but be very sloppy without it.
Do you have a size and length for the screw you put in to press down for the c clip?
You need a 5/16 rod or bolt about 9" to make a lock spring compressor. Here's the link to instructions:

@@Stoneface_Garage Thank you for your time. Great video.
How in the HELL are those bearings supposed to stay in there!!!???!!!
Cold sticky grease
Going fast through the steps made this video almost useless. All the integration required for the dimmer/ wiper switch pieces would have been useful
