I think you could replace the pot with the kind that hides the button in the top of the knob, like the switch on the ultra jazzmaster, though you would also have to change the other knob to match so it doesnt look goofy
like this one, S1 switch ua-cam.com/video/m8wZg55GEww/v-deo.html
You have more links than a daisy chain bro lol.
Very brilliant fix Lan bravo.
My guitar player bought the same theme strat with the shawbucker in it from Sw last yr, and waited 3 months for it. Then he traded it for a Gibson Lp studio...Smh
Sad day for Fender guy like myself, that dark night finish was bees knees.
Eureka! It's counter intuitive to add washers to lower the height. Nicely done.
You could also do it by using 2 nuts under the switch plate. Tighten one to the switch plate at the desired height, then tighten the 2nd nut to to keep the 1st one from moving.
that sounds nuts
Bursting with nuts!
That's a nutty proposal..!
I wish fender would omit this type of feature on their Tele offerings. Many players choose a Telecaster because of it's bare bones, no frills appeal.
I'd rather have a 4-way switch
Rather than stacking washers, you can thread another nut onto it under the pickguard. Works as a height adjuster
under the pickguard?
Looks much better.
Personally for me I prefer push pull as it’s less obnoxious 😂 but what you have done has made it look a lot nicer
Thanks Landon, love your channel.
My pleasure!
Looks like that works well. I use two 3/8" x 32 nuts and a toothed washer to lock input jacks and pots in place on a couple of my guitars. Sandwiches the cavity/jack plate firmly in place to set height and keep inputs from twisting.
Nice easy fix. Good thing you had all those washers!
I have no idea where I got them all!
Quit pushin' my Tele 'round! Always fun, Landon!
I like this guitar. I'm going to play it today
weirdo
I just received the same color for the strat version! What a great fine guitar! One of the most beautiful color I ever seen on a guitar^_^
Nice, elegant solution. I have always put a mini toggle switch between the knobs on Telecasters when I needed an extra switching function. Doesn’t look quite as sleek, but the switching action is more intuitive to me, and allows you to use high-quality regular pots that aren’t available in switched versions. It all comes down to user preference in the end.
🎸👍
Nice job....glad you're happy with this beauty 👌👌🎸 I think my next guitar will be the roasted pine version of this 🤘🤘
Roasted pine looks awesome!
Congratulations Landon a quick easy fix for something that bugged you. Even if it was just a wee bit every time you played it or just grabbed it to give it a look. Seems well worth the trouble! I liked the 2 nuts idea as well.
Nothing quite like 2 nuts
Nice work man..great guitar..🤘🤪🎸🎶
You have my exact guitar! It's a jewel!
I just got the exact same guitar last month. My tone knob doesn’t seem to stick up as high. Great video. Thanks, Landon!
oh good, maybe it was just mine
Mine doesn't stick up that high either
These short and sweet videos are pretty good 👍
Glad you like them!
You done good 👍🏻
Hum...Shack of washers, Sticks out too much, Add/Delete length, Back ground music maybe "Push Push in the Bush"? Love It and Keep on Rocking!!!!
You did it!! Yayyyy yeah, you're lucky to have it. I care about it, now I know I can make myself lucky enough to have one too, and have a less silly push push knob.
🎸👍
I had a professional series strat and the skinny tall frets drove me insane. Sold it for a 2016 American standard strat and now I am much happier 😃
Much better then it was. Good job.
🎸👍
It looks a lot better
🎸👍
Good job! My Squier Contemporary RH Tele is fighting me a little. My new used Epi SG on the other hand felt right as soon as I strummed the first G chord on it. My #1 is a Fender Mexican strat and it's looking like my new #2 is going to be the SG. Decided to go for a SG after watching your vid comparing three different models. It's my first SG and I'm surprised how much I like it. The SG has bumped my Ibanez RG back a step to #3.
Nice fix! I've always thought that was strange, too. You can also sand away some of the bottom of the knob so it will clear if you want to cut down that plastic bit.
Now, see if you can relocate the switch on a Strat!
ya the Strat knob doesn't stick out too much
NICE ! ..GREAT MATHS 👍
Thank you 👍
Ah nice one! Think I'll try that on mine! Cheers dude!
easy mod!
Fender could have gone with a 4-position switch because that's a part that they actually sell. Your guitar looks better now but all I can say is that you are lucky that the control cavity had enough depth to allow you to lower the tone pot. Otherwise I guess you could have removed the plastic retainer in the tone knob or even drilled out a replacement knob.
I love the 4 position mod. I have redone all but one of mine to use the Oak Grigsby switch setup.
Great fix mod
Seeing the different depths of the hole in the knobs I would first have tried switching the knobs... put the volume knob on the tone pot, etc.
I only noticed after the fact 😊
The American Ultra has a circular button within the button that doesn't require it to stand up off the control panel at all, and it's way better
ya the S1!
Just ordered one of these in the mercury finish and as an amateur luthier that’s always looking for a reason to learn more I’m going to get an s1 switch for an ultra and put it and a normal tone pot on it
I got a strat with the same problem. Good old Sweet Water
I’m glad to see your math skills are on my level.
2+2=5!
just got my american pro 2 tele today. after playing for nearly 40 years its my first brand new guitar and first guitar i ever spent more than 500 bucks for. I love it. The guitar is stunning in every way.
awesome! it's my fav neck ever
I personally hate these push/push or S1 switches on Strats. It's the main reason I chose my American Original 1960s Strat over the American Professional II when I tested them both. That, and I love the Shell pink. The Strat and Tele have been just fine for decades people, we don't need all these hidden switches! lol
i didnt love that feature for sure
I have it in Butterscotch Blonde, but it didn't bother me until I saw your initial video, so thanks for that. Seriously, though, it has become my favorite guitar. I have the Deluxe in Dark Night, and I don't play it as much as the standard Tele.
I love Butterscotch Blonde!
I think the push-push knob should be recessed in the plate, so in the up-position (pushed, pought?) it will be on the same level as the unpushable one.
but then it wouldn't be able to be pushed downward
@@landonbailey My idea is the recession should be that deep that it can (it's just relative height).
Good idea, I noticed the same thing on my Strat and it bugs me. Just not so simple on my guitar because the pick guard has to be removed. Guess I'll just live with it.
After watching your video I decided to give it a go. First of all, I fell over walking backwards. Third time was a charm though. Then continued on and got lost at 2+3, so just put everything back to normal and will bring it to a luthier.
🤣
Good job
Thanks
I am agree its the best télé i own, other will be sold
Fix that hernia Chris you can do it!
Nice
I just got my Dark Night Tele. The knob isn't really a problem but this is interesting.
I think I'll try it.
does yours stick out this much? Others have said it doesn't on their guitar.
@@landonbailey Good point.
Mine was set up already recessed so that there is barely any of the brass threads showing.
It's almost flush with the nut.
Yours has at least 3/16 of an inch of thread showing above the nut and that's a big difference.
Botton line is your solution does what mine was already set up at the factory to address.
I've gone through 3 of these in the last month (returned 2) and the others were high like yours.
Now I have a Dark Night so I'm no longer jealous of yours. It's really pretty.
I think Fender should have used the knob from the 50s modified Ventera. Only the middle of the knob pushes, so it is the same height as the other knob. I can certainly see why your knob was irritating.
I suppose it would be possible to grind/sand the bottom of the knob so that you could put another washer inside and lower it another 1.5mm or so. Of course, that would require a jig or really steady hand and some means of touching up the chrome plate around the bottom edge, but, I'm thinking you went far enough with the mod as long as it was already fitting in its case. No one would notice that one knob is taller than the other as long as they are both the same height above the guard. In fact, they appear to already be different heights already and it looks fine. I do know how things like that can drive a person nuts. Good job.
cheers!
Right on 👍👌💯🎸🎸
👍🎸
Change the pot to a regular one and install a 4-way switch
that would be my stock choice!
I would remove push button completely and rewire for another 2 way switch nearby
Cool mod. I have a APII Strat in Dark Knight and I'm trying to find a way to switch to the Ultra Volume/Switch. It's much cleaner looking. I would have bought the Ultra but this Dark Knight color is amazing and it's only offered in the APII. Thanks for the video!
I have used p/p pots in various builds. This is a common issue. Good job.
I'm convinced they put them on the Pro II just so they can remove them for the Pro III and be like, "See, we listen."
😝
You could change it to the push button they use on other models.
I didn't want to mod it away from factory design
My pro II Tele’s push push knob height is actually the same height as yours after your fixed it. I never had to modify it. I wonder why yours was sticking up so far
Now you have to look inside yours and let me know!
@@landonbailey 🕵️
Great fix for low $$
I think so too! and it's still stock. I didn't want to mod it too much
This is fantastic thank you for this! I have the same guitar and agree the push/push is dumb. Where did you get the washers from? They look like they were the same kind. Also I’m planning to do one of your tele builds just found you on UA-cam. Thank you for sharing these videos!
I must have collected them from other guitars and wiring kits.
Thank you for the reply Landon!
should take it right out go normal tone pot/knob know with a 4 way obsidian wire kit !!!
those are really good for sure!
Like it
I’ve got a push/pull switch for the voume pot of my Tele. It doesn’t stick up too far when it’s engaged, but it still bugs me that it sticks up at all. I’m thinking of swapping it out for an S1 switch.
S1 is cool. low profile and basically invisible
I'm surprised they didn't go with an s1 switch
I guess they wanted the dome knobs
I feel like the knob doesn’t stick out too high on mine. I got used to it. I recently picked up a Vintera 50s Telecaster on Reverb (Fiesta Red) and I love the neck on it. You should check one out. Curious to see what you think of them.
ya others have said their knob is ok too. My blue Tele is a '50s Vintera. I didn't get the neck with it though. see it here ua-cam.com/video/dKWEGlfYjZM/v-deo.html
The coil split option on the Pro II Strat with the witch hat looks quite odd pulled out. Ended up not buying one, based partially on that.
Maybe. 😬
I didn't find it stuck out as much
Mine actually bothered me too, and because my picking hand is so freaking heavy I keep knocking my volume knob loose.. I broke my toggle switch with this stupid hand so I just took both the knobs off. Problem fixed. I just did it today so not enough time yet to find the cons
Fixed until Animal takes a bite at it!!! HAHAHA!!!
My only gripe about my American Pro II Strat is the usual: the Volume knob is in a bad spot.
I'm flirting with the idea of deleting the center knob, [TONE] and wiring that stuff through the Push/Push rear knob, then putting the VOLUME knob where the middle knob was.
it would have been pretty wild for Fender to change the location of the volume knob on what is basically the successor to the American Standard Stratocaster.
@@A_Noid And that's fine---it's been that way for a LONG time. I just wish that knob wasn't so far forward and I may change mine.
I frequently end up knocking the selector switch to the bridge position if I strum with any gusto.
Damn, how it was originally, thing can take out an eyeball.
🤣
You sir,
...are a swap Master
I hope that's good
This is why ObsidianWire 4-way kits were invented! Get rid of that ugly push / push knob altogether.
I agree with that!
I'm thinking of doing pull/pull mod on mine. I'll report back with the results.
let me know if you're able to pull it off! 😝
I dont like the push push knob think i remove it complete for a normal one.
Fender Accountant: "we have all these extra push-push pots. We have to use them up."
Fender Designer: "we don't need them, they're dumb. That's why we still have them".
Fender Accountant: Put them on the Pro II Tele's....."
Fender Designer: "But wait...no..the knob will stick up and look stupid. Stop.... No....
Fender Accountant: "See, listen to me and this company will go places...."
It has bugged me on mine as well and I'll do the add-washers trick. Thank-you for posting this!
🤣
You should just install an S1 switch. Does the same thing but is much more discreet.
they have that on the Ultra model, and '60s Vintera Modified. I like them
Late to the game but do you find the tone/push knob to spin too freely? Wish Fender just used a four way switch.
Did you match your phillips screwdriver to the finish on the Tele? 🤣
Canadian Tire took care of that
Any functionality issues after changing the height? Wondered if it wouldn’t fully “click” off (down)
it's working great! I made sure it had clearance
Hey Landon, I don’t like the push/push or the pull on Teles or Strats.
I do like the dedicated push button located in between the volume & tone knobs on the Teles.
Seen this mod on Greg Koch’s Reverend Tele.
Fishman has this Tele mod.
Check it out!!
Think you’ll like it!!🎸
Been there! :) ua-cam.com/video/hqqNS5gwUJk/v-deo.html
Biggest problem for me with the Pro2s with rosewood boards is the near invisible side dots. Apart from the fact I had 3 faulty ones. 🤣
I haven't noticed that and ouch 3!
@@landonbailey ye 2 dodgy jazzmasters and a strat. I'm a lefty so not sure they get the play through time at the factory that they need. it's not uncommon for me to get stuff that needs work. I said never again but a month later I was breaking the bank and ordering a custom shop Tele. 🤣
I guess you do always have the option of using an S1 type of switch like the Baja Tele used to have.
they do it on this one now ua-cam.com/video/m8wZg55GEww/v-deo.html
@@landonbailey It seems to me that the S-1 is an upgrade over a push/push switch. I don't understand why Fender doesn't put it on an upper-tier guitar like the Professional II. If anything, I'd expect the Vintera to get the push/push switch.
Would an S1 switch be a possible replacement for a push/push pot? I have not really looked too closely at the business end of the S1 switches, so I am not sure how the connections and lugs are situated, but if they were set up in the same way as a push/push, they would have the aesthetic advantage over the push/push pot.
There would be some work involved. I haven't looked recently but this one has an S1 switch ua-cam.com/video/m8wZg55GEww/v-deo.html
@@landonbailey I have a Vintera 50s modified, which is basically the same as the guitar you built in the video you just linked, and that got me thinking about using an S1 switch in one of my Strats to use as a coil split for a humbucker. I did take a look at them briefly on some websites to compare the S1 switch to some push/pull and push/push pots, but I was never sure if they work the same way electronically/mechanically as the push/push or push/pull pots. They do look similar though.
I do plan on building my first partscaster sometime this year. Maybe I will do something really crazy and build a Strat with an S1 switch, a push/pull and a push/push pot in it. Wire it to do all sorts of stuff like coil splits. taps, out of phase, have the guitar be able to do my taxes for me, etc.
Maybe you can just change the knob. The ultra has a knob with just a button basically on the top. Yeah 🤔
you can do anything! this was the simplest fix
I am kind of surprised there wasn't an S1 tele switch on this rather than a push push, I have a few Push Push switches they do kind of seem to stick out slightly further for some reason.
just learned the s1 is on the Ultra!
@@landonbailey Maybe an operation at a later date? I think I have seen them also on Amazon and Stratosphere.
Simple = awesome. I have push/pull on my Epiphone ES-335 Pro, the first guitar I ever had with that contraption on it. I'm not a fan.I have a Tele and a Fender for single coil stuff.. I get that you might want to switch mid-song or mid-set, but honestly, how often is this really a problem? I never use the push/pull.
the push/push is spring loaded. like the loading mechanism on the original Nintendo
@@landonbailey Fair enough, different mechanism, but I still probably wouldn't use it lol.
Or you could have removerd both of the existing washers, added 1 nut and a lock washer under the plate and just adjusted the height with it. There are plenty of headphone and mic jacks in airplanes that way so the jack doesn't stick way out. I know, because i put them in :)
good tip!
From Leo: Good Job. I like the push / pull switched pots better but you made a good improvement with yours.
The one thing wrong with my Tele is the weight!
Beautiful guitar! Do you use that switch? Don’t think it’s something I’d want in a Tele. Would probably take it out. Also there’s lots of plastic coated wires in there. I’ve been systematically rewiring all of my guitars with vintage style cloth covered wire. Looks much more authentic.
I could do without it on this guitar. I didn't know it existed until I bought the guitar. I do like a 4th position, but just on a reg switch
@@landonbailey Sounds like sex advice.
Yes. This function makes this guitar great. They could have done well with a better switching design though.
The push-push pot looks like a bobble head!!!
Clever mod
I'm a clever modder 👍😛
Obsidian Wire’s Tele 4-way switch would solve this issue
definitely! I want to keep this stock though
Hi
Hi
This would have been a good opportunity to just swap it with a push/pull pot.
I want to leave it stock
ouiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
I love how awkward your videos feel. And that's not a criticism.
Remove the extra washers and swap the knobs.
for what?
You are Canadian, aren’t you? Makes sense.
I would get rid of the push/push and replace it with a switch. I prefer simple, the push/push idea just annoys me.
4-way is the way :)
You tried fixing it with washers, do you think it will work with dryers? Badum tss!
can always try!
