Kris .. the tele is the most versatile wonderful cutting board ever made .. you can slice onions on the back and Rock the House .. im serriously looking at a stretched tele Body .with two tele pickups on their own wiring and then strat . with its own wiring a complete frankinstine tele/ strat .. gibson 3 way like the 72 tele .. and 5 way for the strat ..

As a teenage metalhead, I thought they looked ugly, and the headstock was goofy. Fast forward, and I think they are the most beautiful and playable guitars.
I always thought they looked boring and ugly. Still do. But now I see certain charm in them. I guess it's like a girl who's kinda plain and not pretty, but she's really cool and fun to be around so it ends up making her attractive.

Same. I found out only a year or two ago that Led Zeppelin 1 was recorded solely with a Telecaster.
The headstock is actually the most elegant, the way it's shaped at the back.

Doesn’t really sound like a compliment other than they are perhaps indestructible. It’s just a butcher block with strings on it. Telecasters are to guitars as cockroaches are to insects? Had an SAT flashback from 800 years ago.
my tele goes out of tune more often than my strat, maybe its because its an fmt hh

I find it incredible that Leo seemed to find a design that hangs in there today after all these years. I love the design of the telecaster, and of course, the sounds.
For me, the tuning stability of the Tele is IT! I remember a band mate saying, "You can use the Tele onstage to bat away a thrown beer bottle, then go down into the audience and use the Tele to deck the guy that threw it, and return to the stage and keep playing, all without going out of tune!"
99% true for me...had to give a micro turn to the G peg/string, while bouncers finished up for me. I also used to show people by surfing it down my old wooden staircase from the second floor to the first. Not with me on it of course, that would be pushing it. Just give a little tug on the strings and get back to playing. Spanking the plank- plucking the twine and making it whine all those sayings really fit the Tele, but I have to admit I equally love the Strat... Especially with a switch to get bridge and rhythm, and all three... And nothing wrong with a tele with 3pu's.... Well then I do love a Les Paul special... And 335.... Yeah but back to the ruff housing and crowd control, that's definitely Tele.... Or maybe Duo Sonic... hahahaha

@John Gardy oh man my notifications were turned off, wow that was like a movie, I pretty much figured it would have a happy ending (as happy as an ending can be when a house fire is in the mix) I got caught up and was relieved when everyone came out okay. I could just imagine the little kittens scurrying out, sort of comical now but obviously not then. Fire, yeah I've had a couple weeks in the UCI Burn unit, that place is top notch. That cracked me up with the fire men all pumped up on Backdraft.
Yes I did play some 'fun' bars when I was younger. In the Long Beach area there were numerous bike gangs, and they could get a hair up their tail side just over the colors of a bass players hat. I remember Harold used to have a Marlboro hat and the place we were playing these colors were yellow and black I mean black and yellow I guess... Pretty funny if yellow was the main color! Anyways Harold was of Irish descent with red hair that was balding, and he wasn't taking off that hat for anybody. It finally resolved in him turning it backwards. Another time I was dating a girl that I didn't know had an ex-husband that was nuts. We heard he was going to show up looking for the guy she was going out with, so we just didn't show any interest in each other. I was in that position often having to play down any relationship with a waitress or bartender, lest her tips would take a dip. It was all going fine until she got jealous over a couple girls flirting with the band and came over and let them know I was unavailable. Next thing I see is a guy running full-tilt at me. I was amazed how fast it turned into a Louisville Slugger. He got intercepted by my best friend/brother Ray and the bouncers. I was just having fun earlier but I don't think I've ever cracked anybody, although I did have to chase a guy from coming in our house with a tele neck that I had by the door... He kept running in front of me yelling just put that down and I'll fight you... Heck I wish it was a Bass neck.

@@IdiHaps it depends on the personal emotion. It is not necessary to play every style of guitar. It is better to play one guitar, with the best fit under your fingers then to play hundred different guitars because of blabla. 😂 I prefer a big ass lady like a Gretsch. Not so stable like the best working horse, but when she runs, there is nothing better then a Gretsch. But at the end everything is only a opinion and not a God depended absolution. 😂

In some ways it's not even really a guitar.... it won't sound anything like a dreadnought, that's for sure.

I accidentally used a Tele about 12 years ago (having disliked and misunderstood them before) and I was blown away. Quickly bought a US Tele Deluxe and I now leave Strat and Les Paul at home. It truly is the one guitar to rule them all. Great video and extremely nice chops
Im in total agreement. for what ever reason I had some bias towards them. I caught a deal on a tele that I couldnt turn down on ebay, thinking I would sale it if I hated it. Well, I have since stopped playing everything except for my 335 and purchased 4 more teles!
The neck pickup on a tele has just the most underrated jazz tones, not to mention alternative/indie music

My Gibson Les Paul... Sitting in the closet. My Fender American Professional strat...behind the couch. My Squier cv 50s Tele...in my hands ALL THE TIME now... Love my Tele!
Yeah it's weird isn't it. My player tele is here next to me on the stand. My '95 Strat Plus, my prs se24, and my Gretch hollow are in the cases and don't see much light since I got the tele. I do still play my acoustic instruments, but the tele even has me cut down on those! Note about the player tele -- They can come very very badly set up from the factory/store -- mine had the saddles about 1/8" too low and way too much relief in the neck. But once I sorted out the setup, it actually plays and feels better than my American Strat. The neck finish -- glossy top, satin back, is the nicest I've played!
Personally I absolutely love teles. I’ve only been into guitar since around last September, and I’m 15 so it’s not like my taste in guitars has changed too much, but I think they are the most beautiful guitars in the world. I’ve never understood how anyone could call them ugly.
yeah, ever since I was 15 (when I got interested in music making) I thought that telecasters look like the abstract concept/idea of how a guitar should look like

I started playing when I was 11 years old, I’m now 64. Got my first fender Tele at 18 and played it for about a year. I have played many different guitars but after 45yrs of playing I went back to the telecaster. I have fallen in love again. They are the most incredible instrument. All you need is a good Tele.

Fantastic video, So much info and so well delivered. You answered all my questions (tuning stability, and versatility options) so clearly. Thanks for the effort.
I've been playing bass for decades and I've wanted to be a "functional" guitarist for a long time (bass will always be my main, but not knowing how to play basic guitar has been a huge hole), I instantly fell in love with the Tele vibe. I play a good old standard American P bass and they have a similar wholesomeness to them, which is why I think I instantly gravitated toward it. Super simple, super functional, and it's an instrument that shows that it's so much more the player behind the instrument, the Tele (and P bass) just get out of the way and let you do your thing.
My friend kept telling me that what I really want is a Strat and once I become better he says it's what I'll buy and I'll toss my Tele aside, but I really don't think that will be the case. My P bass is the only bass I need, and I think it will be the same with this Tele.
I didn’t know it at the time (I was 14, clueless with a crummy secondhand acoustic) but the first guy I ever took lessons from came from money. I’d been going to his dumpy apartment (it reeked of weed & cigarettes, but I liked it) for about 3 months, when one day he just stopped the lesson. He stood and said, ‘come here and check these out ... you wanna try’? I walked through a curtain into the next room and saw the most incredible rig ever and like 8 perfect, shiny electric guitars on stands. The names on the guitars were those I’d only seen on album covers; Fender, Gibson Les Paul and Gretsch. I don’t remember much more of that day except playing them one by one while he adjusted different effects and pedals, but the last guitar I played was an old Telecaster in mint condition. When he told me it was the guitar used in the Stairway To Heaven solo, I was in awe. He said it was his favorite as he carefully handed it to me. Then he cranked the volume, added distortion ... and suddenly, I was the greatest guitarist this world will ever know.

The best feature of the Telecaster is you just plug in and play. I have been playing a MIM telecaster that I got on sale at the Guitar Centre in Buffalo 20 years ago. I put Nocaster pickups in it, and used it for 10 years gigging the bars and clubs in Toronto. It is still my number One today.

I remember watching the movie crossroads as a teenager and fell in love the tele, had guitars for 30 years but only just got my tele last year, all other guitars struggle to get any use these days the versatility of a tele is awesome. Tele into marshall just beautiful.
I misunderstood the Tele for a long time but the older I got the more I realized that I had been missing something great.
I grew into this guitar and I love my Telecaster.
I just got my second Tele recently. It's a standard Tele. My first one has active double humbuckers, double binding, tree of life inlay and mirrored pickguard. I love it so much I had to get the second one. It's still growing on me and I'm still tweaking it but I'm having a lot of fun so far. You've given me some ideas on where to take it and I can't wait to try them out. I have a large variety of guitars but always seem to gravitate back to the Teles.

You’ve said it all. I have a Les Paul, a Strat and a Tele and I’m in love with my Tele. The one I play the most. Versatility and reliability - never out of tune. Even perfect for punk rock, as The Clash, The Stooges, NOFX and Bad Religion will prove it.
Been in love with Teles for 60 years! The middle setting is under utilized and under appreciated. Nice videos!
Amen brother. And it's a humbucker in middle position! I usually work rhythm in middle then switch to single bridge or neck as desired for the trademark lead tones. Same trick on my P90 LP Special. Simple guitars are awesome. They also challenge you to develop your own sound by how you physically play them. It's hard work at times but worth it.

I'm torn between a Fender Player Tele and a Schecter PT Special.
The schecter has a matte finish that I like, way better body contoures, brass saddles and a P90 in the neck while costing 50-100$ less than the fender. Made in Korea.
Thoughts? Or is the tele neck pick up too good compared to a p90?
Any help will be really appreciated. Don't have shops I can try them out at. Will have to buy online.
I find it SOOOOOOO nice for metal. Usually I feel like there is too much bass in casual metal guitars and the brightness of the tele really allows to get a fat sound without being "swarmed" by the distorsion. Its brightness is just wonderful.

This video was one of my biggest inspiration to get a Tele for Christmas. I thought it's gonna be a nice addition to my collection and I'll be playing it for some extra tones here an there. To my surprise, it became my main guitar (I play mostly classic pop-rock, some oldies, and occasionally blues) almost instantly. It's such a reliable, cool instrument, cuts trough the mix like a knife, and got most of the tones you'll ever need. Thank you again for making this video! Cheers!

I've just bought a Deluxe Telecaster and, believe me, it's the most beautiful guitar I ever seen. It,s simple, but so versatile at the same time, great to play blues. Love it!
I hated telecasters for about 20 years. Then suddenly decided I wanted to try one - 40th birthday comes along and I suddenly become the proud owner of a Tele :D It is just the most versatile guitar ever, even with just 2 pickups - you can get so much from it. People forget what the volume control is for and also don't realise the bridge pickup is actually warmer than a strat bridge normally! Also, amazing playing there - that's quite the range of styles you can play there!
I'm a late-comer to the Tele myself. When I was younger, I hated the way they looked, I hated the way they sounded, and I had NO IDEA why anyone would want one. It wasn't until I was in my 40s myself when I finally "got it". Now I'm certifiably nuts about Teles, and own seven of them in various configurations.

I'm 35 and have been starting to drool over tele's for about a year or so now. I'm thinking I want to build one though, and adding a phase switch and a kill switch.
The first time I picked up a tele I found the raw aggression and "punch" I'd been trying to get out of strats for years, now Im a huge fan. Love the tuning stability as well

I've been using a Telecaster since 1985. Changed the frets twice. That's a great guitar! Especially when I find myself in a bunch of guitarists who have a Strat or a Les Paul, at a jam session.
These are a great guitar to learn on also..... why, because they highlight every single mistake you make, that might sound like a bad thing, but if you can learn to play a Tele cleanly, you can play anything.

10,000% agree with EVERYTHING! Perfect video! I have considered selling all my other guitars and just keeping my tele many times. I still use my two other guitars for different things, but I could do an entire gig with just a tele no problem! Damn son, you put that thing through its paces. Love Tele’s as a blues instrument. Listened and played a lot of Roy Buchanan, Albert Collins, Mike Bloomfield. The best unknown was Danny Gatton. He’d rather work on old cars than play but he was awesome when you could get him to play.

Awesome video, Kris! I am a BIG fan of the Fender Telecaster, and I agree with all points made in your video. The Tele is where it all started, and giving their versatility and durability, Telecasters are also most likely where things will all end too!
I bought an American 2 tele and I’m absolutely blown away with it. Outstanding guitar on every level. Like many on here I have other nice guitars and they don’t get played since I bought the tele. I’d wanted one for ages but have been a Les Paul player for years had a few Strats along he way too none of them has had the impact on my playing like the tele has as you say it actually drives you on to play things that you wouldn’t normally play. Great video man nice one

same story here...bought and sold lots of S and T style for years...never bonded or aligned with my musical tastes...then turned 60...music tastes changed and in last year or two...have acquired 8 Teles...repurchased one from a friend, acquired a great LSL TBone lefty last week. Played a Tele in early 80's (out of necessity, upside down Hendricks style)...but really only purchased/played LPs and other Hbuckered guitars...only using the bridge pup. Now....love my Tele's, spend most of the time on the neck.... and just love everything about it. Constantly experimenting with pickups, upgrade, modd'ing.... having fun...can't wait to retire soon to be able to tinker and play Teles. I disconnect neck pup from tone pot to improve clarity...nice simple mod.

The Telecaster, to me, is a thing of beauty. Its perfection is born of its brilliant and elegant simplicity. Everything about the Telecaster was designed to serve its function. No frills. Just the most rock solid guitar ever made. Once the strings are broken in, they simply don't go out of tune. Play it as hard as you need to, it will respond with more growl, more bite, and cut through a mix with ease. There is something about single coil pickups that humbuckers can't touch. That telecaster voice, that "talkiness", that shimmer, that responsiveness, that chime, the dynamics... subtle but all powerful. It allows you much greater expression of every single note, which equates to all the difference in the world.

I didn't know until recently that, seemingly, Jimmy Page had recorded the whole first Led Zeppelin album using his Telecaster (aside from the parts he played on an acoustic).
That blew my mind more than a bit. Quite a testament to the versatility of this unique instrument.
But it sold millions of Les Pauls to little boys
Played quite a few later Zeppelin studio tracks with a Tele too... The 'Stairway to Heaven' solo most famously, but I think he also used a Tele on 'Houses of the Holy' (the song), 'Ten Years Gone' and possibly 'Achilles Last Stand' too.

I'm looking for a telecaster rn, and i have to admit - it's because I'm kind of getting into country licks and what not. But after doing research the last 2 weeks, I've come to find that the tele matches EVERYTHING i could want. Jazz, blues, country, hard rock, it sounds great doing it all. I'm leaning towards a Player series fender tele and I'm more excited each day to get it!

I pulled my old beat up MIM tele out of storage for the summer and wondered if it was worth getting new strings and a new tuning machine set since for some reason my high E tuning key just fell off and disappeared. But after watching this video I'm totally convinced it's the right move to bring it back to life after 6+ years. Thanks for posting this!
Great video! I only play acoustic but want to start electric and need something that's a bit of an all rounder. I've always loved the look of the tele and I think you've just made my mind up!

Me too...played one in college, early 80s...then went humbucker for decades. Within last 18 months...picked up 8 Teles... I too love the neck pup....especially when I disconnect the tone pot...adds clarity and healthy output. Lollar Special T's are my favorite...turned my budget Squier CV50 into a beast...rivals my Pro II tonewise.

When I was a teenage guitar player in the UK in the 1970s
the Tele was the Status Quo guitar,
then the Wilko Johnson guitar,
then it ruled as the punk rock guitar of choice..
It's always been my favourite,
until I gradually started liking Les Pauls in my 50s...
Let's not forget Andy Summers too.

After a stroll down memory lane via UA-cam (Rezillos, Sham 69 etc.) it looks like I found more people using Les Paul Juniors than Teles. So my homework for tomorrow is 'hunt the punk Tele' and reduce all Springsteen to just 2 chords.

who could find affordable old 2nd hand 'real' guitars...
But back then me and my mates used to laugh at punks with Gibson Les Pauls, even the Pistols..
I was in my 50s before I matured out of old prejudices and became a convert to the Les Paul..

Pretty much all of zeppelin was recorded on the telecaster. Any work done with the les paul was the rarity.
Most of Zeppelin was telecaster recorded. Some strat and some more LP
Nick Bottorf Decades ago I chewed out our bass player for stating that. I had to eat a lot of crow later. Lesson learned.

I remember being in grade 8 guitar class in school (back when they offered that sort of thing), and someone from a previous class had left the Telecaster out of it's locked room. Of course we opened the case and marveled at the 'real' guitar compared to our student nylon strings. I picked it up and started to play with it and I've never felt anything so 'buttery' in my life. The strings almost played themselves.
I just picked up an insanely cheap 'Aiersi' Chinese copy for $125. I can't make it go out of tune and it's a metric shitton of fun to play. I would seriously look at a higher end instrument than this but after doing some minor fretwork I really don't see a need lol. The only thing I miss is the last 2 frets, and I don't find the 'baseball bat' neck any slower than the thin-necked superstrats I own.
I actually like the gainy single-coil sound.
EDIT....I'm a rock/metal guy but I still love that chicken-pickin' sound. It's just the shred of another genre, and all kinds of fun.
Yeah, great examples of what this guitar can do. I have the strat and Les Paul... The tele is definitely next. Like a lot of people it seems, the tele never really did it for me, but now I so want/need one. It's like a light bulb moment. 💡😆

Totally on board with you Kris. I've got 2 PRS, a 60th anniversary Strat, Carvin and Fernandes, all gorgeous guitars, but my desert island guitar would be my Tele for sure. If you're still on the fence about Teles, try a Baja. It has a four-way switch which gives the option of both pickups in parallel that sounds like a humbucker. But yeah, the bridge pickup with all the extra metal around it sounds like nothing else. Good enough for Jimmy Page for the first two Zep albums, come on.
It's technically the brass plate under the Tele bridge pickup that creates that biting tone. There are lots of videos regarding that from pickup builders here on UA-cam.

Rkoz55: Jimmy switched from the Tele to the Les Paul for the recording of Zep II.
Now, having said that, Jimmy used his Tele extensively in the studio: Down By The Seaside, The Rover, most of the 'Houses of the Holy' album, Ten Years Gone, etc.
Totally agree with you about the Baja. It's all I play now. The 4 way switch also has a push pull s1 on the volume. You can even make it sound like a Strat or as a Les Paul. It really is 3 guitars in one. And the Broadcaster bridge pickup is killer Tele sound.
I do believe Hendrix used the Tele for Purple Haze.
I just got one last month after many years since owning one... he's totally right... amazing guitar.. do have a humbucker in bridge... but guitar is so tonally solid, much more of a focused tone than the Strat.. Do love my strats though.

What I love most about the tele is, it really allows you to sound like yourself. I find strat guys all sound similar, which is the nature of the design I suppose and perhaps they are all chasing the same thing, which is fair. Tele guys all sound different to me. Brad Paisley will never be mistaken for John 5. Prince will never be mistaken for Ted Greene. I can go on.

When I was still in bands from 13 yo to 55 I played a Tele. Punk, blues, classic rock, hard rock, some metal, ska, my originals and even 70's funk. All on one guitar with very few pedals.

I've had my Squier Telecaster for 11 years now.It is a true dream guitar.
I've got a Squier Telecaster Standard and it's one of the best guitars I've ever played or owned and I've been playing for over forty years.
Maybe it was me, but the squier tele I had was nice, but it felt cheap. The fretboard was not close to polished like some epiphones I’ve had.
I have the Classic vibe 50's Telecaster. It's great. Is that what you have?

Great video again Kris! While I don't have an actual Telecaster, I have an Ibanez Talman Prestige. I think I chose it over an actual Tele because it's a 12 inch radius and it's slightly offset body imo just a hair cooler. I have Fralin split rail noiseless pickups that are my favorite T-type pickups and for added versatility, I added a 4 way switch (4th position both pups in series) and a push/push pot for out of phase in position 2 and 4. It's the switching system found in Fenders Baja Tele. I love the extra tone flexibility. Cheers! Keep up the good work
TheTaulusPaulus Talmans are great! Everything from a Tele but pretty and stylish. Basically is like you pimp out your Tele with sandpaper to make it curvy. I Love Tele’s feeling but hate the plain wood block body so Talman is a dream. Thats how I imagined my Signature Guitar be like. Mine is just a TM302 Mustard/black and it is slowly replacing my Gibson LP and Melody Maker , I mean , I usually play with the 3 of them but if I had to take just 1 for a rig , I’d pick the Talman. Yours is a cool tone machine, your upgrades are fantastic!
