This is a point that’s seldom made. Nadal wasn’t making it far enough through tournaments to regularly play Federer unless he was in very good form. If you look through tournaments back then he’d be losing to guys Federer would then completely dismantle.
He was such an unsubtle player, almost unbearably so. That really stupid forehand at 6:58 encapsulates so much of his style in one shot: dumb, imprecise, poorly positioned. Federer's backhand winner was great but it was almost fed to him by that pitiful attempt at an attack.
Still Roddick was the last US player to reach #1. US competes with the rest of the world’s best athletes in tennis, fed and Nadal played and could have chosen soccer. No future US basketball, baseball, football or even golf athlete would even consider tennis since these sports in the US offer far more money even for the lowest level professionals. Maybe a great US athlete will choose tennis over these preferred sports in the US and an athlete similar to Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Stephen Curry, Ken Griffey Jr, or Christian McCaffrey will come and destroy Europe and the rest of the tennis world. Much like what a Californian Tiger Woods did in his prime.
This was perhaps the best executed match in history. Not the best match, because in order to do that both players must represent a challenge for the other, but in terms of performance from one of the two players I thing this match is ridiculous, not even Alcaraz, Nadal, or Djokovic have a match like this.
Loved Couriers commentary here. Better than the aussies next to him. And who in the world told Roddick that its a good idea to come to the net on a mediocre approach to federers forehanf
After all these years, UA-cam algarithm keeps on offering me this match. Peronsally I feel Federer single handedly destroyed Roddick's career. Imagine how many slams Roddick would have (I think at least 5~8) if Federer did not exist. Roddick's serve and forehand were so lethal. Before the emergence of Nadal and Djokovic, not too many people could actually return Roddick's serve & forehand as efficient and effective as Federer.
I used to believe Federer prevented roddick and a few others from winning slams but this video proved me wrong: ua-cam.com/video/o1FrO2XLBJM/v-deo.html
Andy needs to work on his footwork, just watch how many steps he takes to prep for a forehand top spin..then watch djokovic plays, now we know why djoker beats federer
@@bigdombig op might not be a native speaker. But I always wonder if roddick could have won some matches against fed, like 09 Wimbledon final. Wawrinka was better than roddick but their h2h against fed were about the same.

Federer shanking alot of shots that go in as well makes it impossible to beat. Imagine if he couldn't hit a chip return against Roddick then that would be a fair match. 😅
Andy has a great skill set - but I've never seen anyone use less or worse the skills they have than Andy Roddick. No aggression on the Fh, lousy footwork and shot selection, stranding himself in no man's land constantly, and on top of that tonight he just played badly. It wasn't just Roger playing amazing it was also Andy playing like crap
I agree there were some tactical issues and poor shot selection on Andy part in this match, but the mental pressure to play a Federer like that must be very hard and make you play badly.

This AO was a 10/10 for Roger... no sets conceded. Absolute crazy level.
11 games in a row vs Roddick was almost unbelievable.
I can watch Andy's serve forever... what a style and speed! Simply amazing!
Youre joking right? Federers was much much better
Roddick's press conference after this beating was hilarious 😂
Federer's prime was poetry in motion.
Federer prime dominated by Nadal

Federer was facing a subhuman gnome like Roddick here, nothing like the titan Nadal.
When you play(ed) against Roger in that mode he was in. No way. And Rodick was such a fantastic player.
Roddick's suicidal rushes to the net were matched only by Connors' deer-in-headlights look.

Fed in this mood didn't even let the opponent play
Great match from Federer!
Federer seemed to have no problem with any of Roddick's first serves. It's amazing how Federer has such few unforced errors.

Man imagine throwing 2 monster aces just to get broken at 4-4. Then winning any game until the third set.
Brutal.
Indeed, he was playing really well and Federer got lucky to get through the first set
