Great job Captain for showing us options. I do get a kick out of some of the critics. I work with a lot of Engineers that think it only works their way, till some of us prove them wrong. Looking forward to seeing the 225 pushing the crooked pilothouse to Bahamas again. Happy Navigating
@garydejarnette2156 very true cap,👍 and soon I will bring you along the test drive And thank you for always watching my channel , captain , see you soon
This isnt a matter of someone elses way, it has everything to do with safety, this individual now has minimized steering rather than maximized steering. With the money he spent on this he could’ve put a jack plate on this application and kept full steering just by vertically adjusting the motor.. stupid stupid move
Deep breath please, The Captain doesn’t strike me as an unsafe pilot. If his sea trill at the ramp proves not to be satisfactory to him! I am shore he will make another modification to his Crooked pilot house. Besides commerce keeps America moving!, Also Jack Plate was my very first thing that came to me as-well.
Captain, you are a real mechanic! Excellent video.
@Agua-Sala thanks cap. I try and love to share this with my viewers, And thanks for watching
I’m still happy with the engine and you’re doing the right thing to make small adjustment so that way you don’t have to look back. when it’s all completed. You’re definitely going to enjoy the performance and the ride. Captain. 😀
Great point! cap some viewers said to navigate like that but i will forget one day and destroy the engine , good point cap.👍
A master at work, including your taping skills on the I.V. unit. Thank Captain!!
Great work!! Can't wait to see it perform in the water 👍
@@Rafair065 Thanks, captain very soon.I'll bring that video to you
DIY a 6 inch set back Atlas hydraulic jack plate. It will give you the clearance and will be a big help navigating the shallows in the Bahamas. Also increases fuel economy. My 4.2l Yamaha was hitting the front of my splashwell when tilted up so I DIY an Atlas jackplate. Was an easy install.
that is a great idea cap but how much weight will that add to my Transom ?
@@OutOnTheReef 51 lbs for a 4" setback. 6" setback won't weigh much more. The 4" may work for you.
@@panamacitybeachbum seriously, do this. It's a game changer
50 lbs and you can trim the motor better and save a bunch on fuel.@@OutOnTheReef
The 4" setback of the jackplate moved my boat's center of gravity slightly rearward. Your boat's bow will also ride higher and it will require less trim to lift the bow with a jackplate You have far greater weight forward than I, and I'm certain it would be an amazing improvement on The Crooked Pilothouse. We are standing by to stand by, Cap'n.
Great tutorial on the upgrade, Captain. I was wondering if the wider engine would be an issue and now you proved it. I love the tape job on the "IV" bottle. In the future, turn the drain tub sideways if it will fit or slip a piece of Tygon drain tube on the bleeder ports to keep the fluid in the bucket.
hello cap and i figure that if this boat was rated for a 225 is that it fits ,but no it wasn't ,and yes this was my worsted IV job that's why i got fired from Medical school 😂🤣 and yes after i looked at the video the tub should been better sideways but wen you are working on the bot and filming at the same time things go nuts sometimes cap, thanks for the idea cap and soon i will put the boat in the water, thanks for watching cap. Prop Clear!!
This issue needed a solution to protect the cowling, a pity you now have a limiter all the time, trimmed or not, hopefully this will not increase you turn radius during maneuvering tight spaces. Can't wait for sea-trials. You will need to tell us who computed your prop and if you will be satisfied with the results. Almost there. Till the next mod and next handful of $$ haha
@@denislaouenan5553 lol cap. And I have several of propellers ready to go, so I can put them to the test. And I'll bring you the new data soon.Captain thank you for being part of the channel
Time for an Armstrong bracket, will help stabilize the boat as well as rise out of the hole.
great suggestion tony
Your opening Pandora’s box with a bracket , Than the Cap will need to buy another bigger trailer 😂 let’s go fishing dam it !!
Yeah, and fill in that transom making it much less likely to flood the boat with a huge opening in the transom and a rogue wave. Never been a fan of boats with open transoms.
I put an Armstrong on my old dusky, it was a game changer.
@@nickwinn Doesn't your Dusky have a 'Dusky Drive'? Its essentially the same thing, no? I had the 256 which originally had (I bought it used) a single Dusky Drive and I converted it to a twin Dusky Drive and put twin motors on the boat. (Dusky is famous for underpowering their boats, IMO) Mine was an 80's hull and heavy as chit. I drilled out the bottom for a thru-hull transducer and it must have been over 3" thick of solid glass! I really think you could run over a coral head and not put a hole in the bottom, it was that thick. Don't know how the newer boats are made. But the point of this is the Dusky Drive is hollow inside, adding that flotation. Having said that, it did benefit from 4-blade props that aided lift in the back on take off, meaning it was heavy in the azz end. Maybe an Armstrong bracket would help, IDK?
Excellent job as usual, Cap. Keep it up!
@@damoncarter300 Thank you, captain.I really appreciate your support. And soon I will show you how this engine handles.Thank you for watching
@ 12:58 you mention that the transom is a little small for the engine........... There is a good excuse to get a bigger boat . . ;-) I know i would try this logic with my wife. 😄

Hey Cap'n, great work. Just sharing a trick I recently learned. You can run a hose between the bleeders and run the pump left and right. All the air gets forced back into the fill bottle. A guy on UA-cam even makes a quick connect kit for sale on Amazon for cheap to do it. Saves time and that expensive Seastar fluid.
@@robertrowe991 Awesome, captain, and yes, this fluid is $33 a quart. And thanks for sharing the awesome suggestion.Captain appreciated👍🛥⚓️

I could have done the same thing for about 5 dollars in parts but that's okay. I am glad you have it sorted out in a way that makes you happy.

You can also get a MapTuner for that engine from Riva and make it a 250. It also saves your factory tune so you can put it back to stock if it ever has to go to the dealer.

When you first purchased the crooked pilot house; I mentioned you should consider an electric Jack Plate. Having the ability to keep the boat leveled moving through shallow water without fluttering and you could also be on a plane if you’re confident.
yes that will be a dream but i will like to know the extra weight , this is a possibility in the future cap
I have a cmc jack plate on my homemade flats boat. I installed it myself and would guess it weighs about 60 pounds. It's rated up to 300 hp.

Im surprised that boat doesnt come with a swim platform type "bracket".
I see people saying you should add one but adding one now will affect so many things and not only create those issues but cost a ton of money!
@DCFloridasport Yes, captain. The biggest thing is the cost and you have to change all the rigging to longer rigging That's adding a few thousand dollars more not considering the cost of the bracket And at the end it will probably cost about eight thousand dollars not worth it

@oceandeepfishing4555 Thank you captain for watching and yes I saved about $3000. dollars total
@@OutOnTheReef Hi Captain.
Was wondering with your new motor do you have to recalibrate your auto pilot to make it work with this motor?
You also haven’t done a live feed in a while. Be nice to have one of those again.
@oceandeepfishing4555 It won't make a Difference because it's the same steering system
When are you ever gonna run your motor that far out of the water. You’re creating issues where they don’t exist
this is a huge problem cap, if i don't fix this the engine outside will get destroyed , i paid a lot of money for it so that means i need to take care of it
I didn’t realize you ran your boat with half the wheel out of the water
capt Crooked you tellthem couch quarter back.
Remember Capt when your on shallow drive water comes off and raises off the back of the transom up 3 or4 inches you’ll be fine Capt of a not crooked pilot house. Jat 🇺🇸🇺🇸🐟🐠🎣🛥🌴🐢🦄🦮
it’s not just about running it in the shallows. God forbid there was a malfunction trailering it to or from the ramp and the outboard swung. The engine would hit the transom I’ve seen stuff happen and when your dealing with a 20 thousand dollar engine you don’t want to take ANY chances
He wont ever have it that high while in shallow. The prop wouldnt even be in the water. Guys a literal idiot. Hopefully yamaha takes away his warranty since he didnt get it installed at a certified dealer
Adding limiters is going to limit your turning radius when the engine is all the way in the water the way you drive it 99% of the time. Your trolling motor is what you use for the shallows rather than limiting your engines turning radius, you don’t drive the boat with the engine up that high anyways.
good point cap. if i see this is a problem i can always change it back but in my last trip my trolling stopped working so i had to tilt my engine , so this things happen
If you keep turning, it will self clearance. Not to worry. When you break in the motor, you break in the cowling and transom, also.
thanks cap.
All kidding aside, this was a very good video.
Let's get this beast in the water I need some virtual helm time
lol Richrard now im ready no more adjustments 😊👍
Add a manual jack plate.
@TheJoejoe7716 never herd about a manual one cap. Thanks
Could hav save time and oil by removing glans in place and turning the engine hard left. No need to remove from engine. Keep the other new glans as a spare.
@@forestlavoy8217 Great suggestion captain thank you for your help😉👍🛥⚓️
So true about the seals being essential to the steering system! When tilted up (not just trimmed up) do you use the outboard to move the boat? I thought you had an electric trolling motor for the shallows? I just hope you have enough angle of steering to help with a windy docking/retrieval. I personally always wish i had more, especially in reverse
great point but i have another fix for that cap, im thinking of using a 4 blade prop to gain more control at docking to make up for the lost and great mid range MPG, thanks for watching cap.
@@OutOnTheReef4 blades also have a better hole shot but you lose top end. The Yammy 225, i think, is lowest HP 4.2L and the bias is towards torque so the Crooked PH should jump out of the water!
Dude, your engine is almost 90 degrees to the water. That’s making an issue out of absolutely nothing.
that's how i use it in shallow water all the time cap and the engine doesn't overheat at all cap
I would rather put a jack plate with 4 or 6 inch setback more work but at least you’ll still have full range of steering You never know when you might need that little extra bit if you get in a tough spot with the wind blowing. But your method was definitely easier
yes cap very true but i will fix that problem with a 4 blade prop for cruising speed and will add 15% of more turning power , that makes up for the turning loss cap, thanks for watching cap.
Great information now I’m ready to see it run!! What prop size did you go up to?
thanks cap , i have several to chose from 14 1/2 15 pitch an a 4 blade pro same size
When you were bleeding the system did you do anything to pressurize the system? Or just let gravity do it.
@geopenn8582 just let the gravity do it job but I moved the steering lo remove air trapped cap.👍🛥⚓️
Hi Captain! How did you pump the hydraulic fluid into the system? Did you squeeze the bottle?
@@joe615a hello cap what I did was moved the steering wheel side to side and the gravity pushes the fluid
I would have opted for a set back bracket you could have one built for a couple hundred $ or buy a used jack plate. You lose too much deflection in your turning radius in a single engine a twin I would not worry about it. a foot set back will also give you better efficiency and a better ride. I do not think you will be happy with the limiters when you are docking and putting teh boat on the trailer in a current and wind
yes i agree cap. maybe in the near future but for now the money is not there , for now i will try like this and if i need it in the future is a possibility cap. thanks
My 2200 Pathfinder bay boat has the same problem. A jackplate is needed to tilt the engine . Sad construction
i know cap this factories approved on their manual that a 225 hp is possible but is not without adjustments
Hey Capt. A long time subscriber here to your channel. Will you be installing a hydrofoil to this new outboard just like you did for your old one?
@@enigmaxd9853 Probably not.I have to see because this one has enough power to take me out of the whole shot. But if it needs it, I'll definitely put one.Because I love them
@ 3:33 did anyone else yell at their computer screen. " Hold the piston vertical!" 🙂
Which is not really necessary. Since the system is 6 years old and its good to replace the hydraulic fluid and bleed they air.
I hope my next boat is big enough to benefit from hydraulic steering.
lol cap😁👍
yes that was the point ,i wanted new fluid in the system cap.👍
yes it helps better the wire cap
I don’t own a boat, so maybe the answer to the following question is obvious for those who do, but why would you ever have an engine that’s tilted forward, simultaneously fully turned to either side?
great question cap . by raising the engine you are able to go in shallow waters that way the engine and propeller don't drag on the sand or rocks cap. thanks for your great question cap.
👍🏻👍🏻
@@augustomartinez9253 thanks😉
Wouldn't it have been better to install a 1" spacer between the transom and the motor mount and retain the full turning capabilities of the motor? Am I missing something?
hello cap i think once i sea trial it i will see if something else need to be change but if steering is satisfactory i will be happy with it, it only change a little with this mod cap and at the end i will end up with a4 blade prop witch it will give me more turning thrust
You gotta be in the industry with a heavy background in mechanical reverse engineering. No way most of us know how to do this. Well done.
Now how are your getting the fluid to spit out of the the nipple? Turning the helm wheel? I don’t recall you mentioning that?
hello captain and thanks for your words of engorgement 😊 and yes i was turning the wheel ,sorry i forgot to show that cap. and yes it was done all by gravity cap is the best way to bleed the system , thanks for watching and have a awesome weekend cap.
Wouldnt a jack plate accomplish this without the risk if running your intake out of water?
@albertoramon226 yes it will work better but a jack plate will add 60 to 80 pounds of extra weight and this engine is 60 pounds heavier the the 200hp
