There's a reason why Suzuki is #1 in the repower market. I replaced three 350 Yamas with three 300 Suzukis on my boat. Best decision I ever made. Reliability, excellent fuel economy, top warranty in the business, and oh, let's not forget pricing. Suzuki is still acting like the underdog, so they still have very competitive pricing.
great decision cap and you save lots of cash making that decision and 5 year warranty is awesome cap , and i think suzuki will raise their price one day after they control some of the market 👍
They’re #1 in repower because of their price.

Hey Cap! I’ve only ever owned a Honda Outboard on my boat but I have to say it’s never once let me down and they seem pretty bulletproof! Most owners speak very highly of them! I think the Honda brand is one of the most reliable! I owned a Honda motorcycle for years and it just kept going! Here in the UK servicing and parts are easy to come by for Honda outboards. Not sure what it’s like in your part of the world, so might have to take that into consideration! Good luck with whatever you decide to go for and happy boating!

I do have to say digital controls are very nice and smooth . But mechanical are cheaper and probably more reliable in the long run. Good cables make a big difference.
If you buy a new Merc, carry spare spark plugs, they fail early and suddenly without warning. I have gone through 4 or 5 sets in 300 hours. Common issue, very small plugs, torque gently.
thanks cap i will keep that in mind
Your channel has been a wealth of helpful knowledge. Thank you for sharing how to remove & connect. I have done this a few times when I was younger, but couldn't remember in these cases of a much heavier engine. I think the Yamaha engine is a good one. Suzuki is just as good . I'm looking at a 34ft right now & trying to decide. It's very spacious & would allow me to travel & rent out my house in retirement. Why are you replacing a Yamaha 200 with only 435 hours that's been maintained impecably? Did you just want something bigger, faster, and thirstier? For what you do, that motor seemed perfect.
@ronbennett8026 I would like to get more horsepower since I carry over 5000 pounds. And I feel the board a little sluggish. So extra horsepower like two hundred and twenty five might be a little better.
I ran a 250 ProXS on my last boat. Never a hiccup with it. Mercury gets a bad rap in saltwater for whatever reason but they are stout motors. We still have a 1966 9.8 that fires up first pull. If you take care of it, it’ll take care of you.
Merc 200 is a V6 and not I4. More lower end and better hole shot. Sacrifice is fuel economy.
My current boat runs a Yammy 300. I have 15 hours on it so right now not enough to say. I feel like my boat could use more than a 300 but that’s not a Yamaha issue. That’s personal opinion.
Suzuki. Only time I’ve been out on a boat with Zukes, they were throwing engine codes. According to the owner, “they don’t like to idle for very long”. I have no idea if that’s true or if the owner just doesn’t want to service the engines. 🤷🏼♂️

The Mercury 3.4l 225 is an impressive motor , fuel efficient and the same weight as the 2.8 f200. I like that Mercury pushes innovation. Which choice for outboard. Its the old Ford vs Chevy, Coke vs Pepsi debate. Looks like you kept your Yamaha controls so that would be "Plug n' Play". My recommendation is to look at dealer serviceability in your area. Likely Yamaha and Merc will come out on top. Suzuki seems to have the best price around. I went through a similar exercise recently. Replaced a Yamaha F250 with a Merc 300. Picked up 50 HP and dropped 40lbs at the transom (Everglades like to let water in through the scuppers). IMO, Mercury has leapfrogged everyone else in the market. Power/Weight and Reliability (yes, I said it) are tops. In short, get the one that best fits your budget, has the best warranty and has the best dealer support in the area.

@FreddyBoy808 Hello, captain and thank you for watching all the way from beautiful Hawaii. And you are right yamaha is just like a toyota and very easy to fix and maintain, I am leaning towards yamaha based on all the comments that I hear from my viewer like you , aloha cap😉👍
Captain, I think choice is harder than it seems. You have to consider the weight of the new engine and how the boat will react when underway with more weight on the transom. I noticed you were running a doel fin type tail. Why was that necessary? To correct porpoising or wanting to stay on plane at lower speed? A v6 engine will have more power and better Mpg at cruise but will be heavier. The 200 Suzuki might be ideal due to its 2.5 gear ratio but maybe a v6 Yamaha or Suzuki 225 will be the ticket if weight is not an issue. I run a 24 ft Albemarle deep v heavy hull with a 300 Suzuki and get average 3mpg @4100rpm 34mph and if I slow down to 3700rpm , I've seen 3.5mpg @28mph. Suzuki is quieter/cheaper$ than Yamaha. I would not go Merc. Only thing I know about Honda is they are extremely reliable. My Suzuki has been flawless. Yamaha, super reliable too. Prop Clear!Good Luck. Sorry for the long post, LOL!
thanks for your awesome comment cap. and yes i wanting to stay on plane with the fin because the lack of power but getting a 225 hp would be my best choice and 3.5mpg @28mph. that will be a dream for me on my long navigations cap. thanks for you awesome comment cap and i appreciate you sharing your experience, Prop Clear cap.
I’ve had a bunch of different brands but I think Yamaha is the best. And I always go max hp for the hull. To me Yamaha is the “Toyota” of motors. They sell a lot and that means it’s easy to find parts.

@nofameculture yes cap. Yamaha has more history in the Caribbean and I like yamaha and Suzuki is a great brand at a great price , have a great night cap 👍
I own a Suzuki and I love it. But honestly, a Yamaha is a Yamaha. They have far superior corrosion protections and electronics. Also, in the Bahamas, you have allot more Yamaha service locations and access to parts as well. Have you considered closing the transome and adding a bracket?
true cap and closing the transom would be great but is lots of money , is better to sell the boat and get a new one , thanks for the advise cap.
@@OutOnTheReef If you order a new boat tell them to make it a little crooked.
What was the reason for changing? Are you sticking with same power? You already have Yamaha rigging however your next engine will prob come with electrical controls and you will discard the Teleflex cables. If I was buying new engines I would get the one that still has the biggest volume for a given power. What I mean is new 200 Suzuki are using the old 2.9L 150 blocks. So it is basically a 150. Try to get an outboard with a real high output alternator and not a flywheel magneto. Presently the DF250 with a 3.6L seems like a really great engine. I believe you can get a good deal at or below 20k all rigged up and prop tested. Anyway those things are very personal and I am sure you will chose what is best for you. I've had all brands, all were great, I never had any engine new enough to be under warranty and I always fix my stuff by myself so I can't say about service which can turn out to be a critical point. Good luck, I am sure you will have fun with your new toy.
thanks cap for your input i will look at that option and see if 225hp would be the best choice 👍
How to choose an outboard by brand:
1: which manufacturer in your area has the best warranty support and parts availability?
2: which engine has the best quality record over its current model run?
3: what elements of one brand can you trade off to gain on another?
4: otherwise theres not much of a difference...they all do the same thing for the most part.
@DCFloridasport very true cap. But I travel to the bahamas in a single engine and I need the most reliable engine that I can afford, thanks cap for your awesome comment 👍👍👍

The more hp the more purposing on the boat, i read most the comment and no want mention weight on the Transon is more important the hp , i will stick with same hp 200 4 inline , im fan of Suzuki they had 5 year full warranty , You Can check my videos , i had the 200 inline it's super powerful and the fuel economy is great , my boat is a 2100 Seaswirl striper WA , im doing almost 3mpg on 4500rpm , Im Outboard tech Here In South Lakeland , you probably know my Channel , Any Question Just let Know , keep videos up , See You On The water Captain
hello cap and yes 200 hp are great but at cruising speed i think on a 225 hp my boat will be less stress cap , i have lots of weigh, thanks for watching cap
I would get the max rated hp for that boat. I have a Merc 225 Pro xs that’s a V8 on a boat similar to yours. It’s been great and the difference between the previous v6 outboard and the current v8 Merc is night and day in regards to power and planing off. I love my motor, but with that said, in your set up, I would probably go with a new Yamaha 225. In your situation, you will be going from 4 cylinders to 6. I wouldn’t hesitate to look at a Zuki either. Decisions, decisions! 😊
yes i hear that a lot cap from you my viewers that 225 hp max transom is the best choice , thanks cap for your input 👍
Sharrow props? Have you looked into it for the new engine? I have seen a few videos and the technology is intriguing for sure BUT $$$$ !!!
yes i seen them but 5k is way too hight, maybe wen they get to 1k i will look into it , thanks cap.
Looks like you cant go wrong with Yamaha or Suzuki. The deciding factor for me is the strengths of the dealer that is most convenient to you, should you have a service issue. That's my $.02 worth... Thanks, Capt.
@curtis-thebicentennialist1776 I agree cap. That is inportan because you don't want to drive 2 to 4 hrs to a dealer, thanks for your comment cap. And soon the Crooked pilothouse will have a new hart😉👍
Close up that transom, add a bracket, and put a 300 Yamaha
that is a dream cap but very expensive
Watch out for lower unit problems with Suzuki, all the other motors get you o
Out on the Reef but Yamaha brings you home !!
@reefmanx1 lol you are right cap. 😊 thanks you
Recently sold my boat with a 2011 Merc 4 stroke and 1,300 hrs on it. Motor looked and ran like the day I purchased it and never had any problems. Just purchased a new boat with my first Yamaha and partly because you had one and never let you down. So Captain you have to stick with a Yamaha.
@@tomd.43 I like your comment cap. We need to stay in the Yamah family 😉👍👍⚓️🛥
yo capitan pa fuera el motor el Croocket pilot house está triste
jajaja si esta sin corazon 🤣
I'd get a new f200 Yamaha. The Yamaha vmax will use a lot more fuel. I hear good things about Suzuki motors but I've never owned one. Merc has more power but not as dependable and I don't know about the new Hondas but the old ones were really heavy. Evenrude is still trying to go full electric from what I hear. How many hours did you get out of your old motor?
Thanks for sharing cap and i had 435 hrs on mine and was running strong but i needed more power like the max ratings of 225hp ,thanks for your comment cap.
@@OutOnTheReef 225 is a 6 cylinder. A bit more weight. I wonder how that's going to affect your fuel burn. Maybe a 225 VMAX. I think the F225 is a 3.3 liter V6 and the 225 VMAX is a 4.2 liter V6. The VMAX offer a ton more charging power to recharge batteries and you have a lot of your custom modifications that use a lot of power. My boat has a 90 gal tank and I haven't gone with the VMAX yet due to worries about fuel consumption and how it will affect my range. If you go with a VMAX, a fuel consumption comparison would be awesome.
@Picasofly the 225 is a 4.2 liter v6 and is only a 40 pound difrence from my 200 old motor cap. Is not going to affect it that much if I go with a 225 hp yamaha
@@OutOnTheReef keep us posted on fuel burn. I'm thinking of going with a Yamaha 200 VMAX on my boat but I currently have a Yamaha f150. I'm worried about the increased fuel burn affecting my range.
How many hours did the engine have ?
i had 435 hrs but i needed more hp cap
I am jaded because I’m the only person I know who had terrible luck with Honda 225s but I will say I’m mechanically incompetent and I was able to fix most of the issues with them myself because they are simple to work on and just make sense. The best piece of advice I’ve gotten on outboards is to buy the one with the largest number of service centers near where you are, especially if you have one under warranty. The biggest issue I had with Honda is around me there are only 2 service centers and both would only work with customers who they sold the outboards to or or were existing clients.
Every mechanic I’ve talked to says Yamaha is the way to go right now. But if you’re doing you’re own work, go with whatever you are comfortable with.
very true cap. thanks for sharing your info on Honda witch is a great engine the most expensive one in the market i think 👍
I have had both Yamaha and Suzuki .
I preferred the Suzuki, because I never had a problem with it. The Yamaha high pressure pump clogged up, and was an expensive repair.
@@michaelhannan8305 I heard also the timing belt is not needed to be changed on a Suzuki. That's another great thing. And thanks for sharing your experience captain appreciated
@@OutOnTheReef I THINK TIMING BELT ARE OVER THE 300 HP ON SUSUKI,DON T LET THEM FOOL YOU GO yamaha .
@@OutOnTheReef Yamahas are also saying they timing belts do not need to be changed like before. Good luck!
Hard to beat Suzuki. Cheaper to buy but made as well as other brands! Better mpg. Better warranty!
@linehauler208 yes cap 5 year warranty is hard to pass, thanks for your comment cap
I work on boats for the last 12 years and I own like 4 all working boat not junk. I owned all motors . The 2 brands I own right now are Yamaha and Suzuki . Best motor hands down are Suzuki. People love Yamaha because parts are everywhere. Not so much for Suzuki. I own a Suzuki that has 3k plus hours on it and it’s still going .
@solidtangent9953 wow thanks cap. For the info I do like them both and 3k hrs is incredible 👍
@@OutOnTheReef yup can’t say the same about Yamaha because unfortunately they have left me stranded.
@@OutOnTheReef but new is new . Had to ed that lol
Look at the Commercial fisherman. What is their preferred outboard? Suzuki.
thanks cap
My question would be. Why are you re-powering with only 450 hrs or so? I’ve ran (on the job) Yamaha’s with plus 8000hrs on them. With that said, if the Yamaha treated you good why change. Yes a bit more pricey, but I believe it’s worth it. I’m currently running (for pleasure)twin 2007 Yamaha 250’s on my 2820 Parker. Have 750hrs on them and still working great.
hello Mike i know they last very long but i needed more power since my boat now is like 5000lb cap on a 200hp is too small so i think a225hp will be the best choice and wow 8000 hrs that is a record cap. thanks for sharing your experience cap.
I would say get a motor that you can have serviced local if you ever have issuse. I think all motors are good depending on what your preference is. If you change motors, I'm not sure if looking into scharo props are in the budget.
scharo props are awesome but the price are ridiculous, i will wait wen the prices go down , thanks for your comment cap.
