      +Truck Driver Thanks! But I'm not trying to make money with UA-cam. I just make videos for fun, then hope people like 'em. That's basically it. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for the comment!

      You should've pointed your camera down just a little and you wouldn't have to worry about the props in your shot. Great video though. I'm probably going to buy some.

    I like seeing the propellers in the videos. I mean, this is flight. Seeing the props gives a certain realism that is really cool. So... to each his own, right? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

    I'm 35, and have lived in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa my whole life. I came across your channel early last week and have watched a number of your videos and your voice felt so familiar. At 0:45 of this video, when you said "Birmingham, Alabama" it clicked. I screamed to my wife "BABY! IT'S KEN! 'BEANER AND KEN' KEN! I KNEW I KNEW HIS VOICE!".
    I'm glad you're still at it and that you're into copters. Keep up the good work!

    I have some of these on the way right now. We have a lot of trees around here so I'm hoping it helps with the signal a bit. For something so cheap, considering how expensive the P4 was it's nice to have. Excited to try them.

    Yep they really works, i have a Phantom 4 and i try it over Everglades Fl, I reach 13212 feet and then i got a warning saying that i have just enough battery to returning home 44% battery 13:36 flying time one way I could keep going, on the way back i got really scare bc the battery was 5% and 2000 feet away from home that wasn't good news for me, i made it back that was the happy's day ever with 1% battery total distance travel 26,262FT flying time 20:32.
    if you gonna use the Rage Extended you better check wind, battery, weather before you fly.

      @F1Fanatic 8 років тому +1

      I know what you mean.. when I first got my P4 I took it out to the Everglades and was a little freaked out when there was very little bail out area in the event my battery power was not going to be enough to get me back against the headwind.

      My Phantom 3 Advanced fly 13200 feet without any range extender or booster. I think it's too risky and don't recommend anyone to fly so far away. So, be careful guys :)

      @juankviera1 8 років тому +1

      hey man i just got a phantom 4 and i can fly only to 2700 feet and yesterday went to 3500 with this booster any idea whats going on with my drone? thanks

    • @Danman263
      @Danman263 8 років тому +2

      Hi there. 2700 feet is too short for the P4. First of all try to find an open space and test again. Remember, in order to avoid signal lost and other interference there shouldn't be trees near you or high voltage electricity lines. If the problem remains, I recommend to contact DJI customer service. Good luck.

    • @reyquezada
      @reyquezada 8 років тому +2

      juankviera1 there is no way that the range of your P4 is to short, make sure your pull up the antenna from you remote at the right direction look for damages on the antenas, the legs from yor P4 are the P4 antenas look for damages, if you dont see any thing wrong call support, make shore you have latest update software for your remote and the P4, try in a open area with no obstacle, good luck

    Great review! Going from Red mountain to I59 is quite a haul, seems much further in my mind than it even appears in the video. I live in Bham myself and have considered flying over downtown for those great shots. The airport a few exits down and my lack of enthusiasm for spurring a UFO sighting controversy in town has deterred me thus far. So, I've just stuck to flying around Hoover near the Met. You may have inspired me to explore the city a little more...Within my legally regulated limits, of course.

      +Ken Heron just got my phantom 2 days ago and I could jump and scream if I was brave enough to do It. absolutely love the way it looks. The bad thing is when i first fly it was incredibly windy and I had a hard time controlling it, I almost crashed it at my parents house in a tree but resulted in just cutting some leaves. To top it off I'm new to the whole drone world so I'm very much a beginner and this incident kinda made me a little afraid. Im looking for videos that can help me gain some skills. I do love it tho but im a bit nervous about crashing it or hurt somebody.

    Hi Ken, just subscribed after watching a few of your videos the past few days. I'm new to quadcopters/drones, but love my P4 so far.. My question somewhat dovetails with your review of both these range extenders and your preview of your next review of FPV goggles. Currently I am using an iPad 4 Mini and here in Florida the ambient light can be quite bright, even with a shade around the tablet.. I noticed another one of your videos where you were demonstrating your technique for flying orbits around a tower in the woods manually while wearing FPV goggles and noticed you plugging them directly into the USB port on the controller. I'm seriously considering picking up a set of these range extenders for when I do a bit of long range flights to record the beautiful skies of the Florida Keys and Everglades National Park.. and was thinking that goggles would be a big help not only with the ambient lighting conditions, but also with helping me frame up the shot I am looking for compositionally. The only negative I can think of is navigation and using Google Maps... Currently if I ever lose LOS with the P4 I have the luxury of looking at the small window on the tablet to see my course over ground and find her again in the sky. When flying with these range extenders do you personally use the Google Maps window for aid with navigation, and if so, are you using it with FPV or taking them off when you get close? Thanks!

    Wondered if you were transmitting nice and tall up, say on one of those buildings for example but in your case it's the earth as a helpful abutment...you are transmitting using directionality + the ground makes a collecting dish right behind you, a sweet spot. Ideal transmission point for a distance run nice job.
    When I fly do I try to do that...use natural forms as backstops and I'll often angle my car sideways to the goal direction and fly sitting in a chair outside with the car as a backstop... makes a tangible distance difference to just standing in an open field even if there were no forward obstructions to signal, backstops help collect and focus even though we directionalized a portion of our in/out

    Since I like to do FPV flight and hope to do this with a phantom 3 standard I hope to purchase in the near future. Would these extenders also improve the signal for the video reception? I would be using my cell phone with a Utopia 360 visor. And yes before anyone comments about that, this the cost effective route I am required to take. See I have 5 boys, a wife with hobbies and a mortgage.......so everything about my future drone will be on a strict budget. Still watching the $20.00 bill I buried in the backyard to see if the money tree sprouts soon.

    Nice job +Ken Heron. Just wondering about the legality of flying over a city like that? Do you know if you could get in trouble for something like this? I'm not really sure what the rules are, I think one is never fly over people as well as not within 5 miles of an airport or within 3 miles of a larger airport. What rules do you go by? Thanks!

    • @KenHeron
      @KenHeron  8 років тому +1

      +mgiusto.com The general rule of thumb I follow is... Never fly over anything you aren't ready to accept responsibility for, should the worst happen and it drops down on it. You can google the rules/laws and get specifics. Just be careful and weigh the risks... If you are willing to take chances to get good footage or not. Reward vs Risk! --Good luck!

    Nice video, one Thumb up from me!
    That must be a wonderful feeling knowing you can fly one million mls (thats how it looks to me ;) without loosing the signal to the drone for a couple bucks :)
    But what happens when loosing the signal, is the drone going in " return to home" mode?
    And is there something like "point from no return" build in the Phantom 4, I mean when the battery is low, the drone returns before landing somewhere you cant find it anymore ore worse, into water?
    I do have flight skills but with RC gas plains (Extra 300s my all time favourite for stunting, and RC helicopters, but the normal flying thing no stunts :)
    Its a shame I do not have time for going 10 mls with al the equipment, and will not going to a club anymore, I just want to pick a drone and fly!

    • @zsgarner
      @zsgarner 8 років тому +1

      Yes the drone would return home as soon as the signal is lost. It will also automatically return home when it hits 30% battery life I believe.

    Tech question , What audio mixer are you using in background ? What audio software is playing your waveforms? Lastly , are you filming yourself while narrating the videos "live" or you just add your audio/video track to your drone footage. Whew!!!! Oh and yes these things are excellent. Much more distance !

    Did you do the same flight without the range boosters on because there's a leaderboard on Phantompilots for distance and people are reaching 22k+ feet stock.

    • @KenHeron
      @KenHeron  8 років тому

      +BoxOfAir Productions No, I didn't. I'm sure my results figured in a bunch of radio interference from all of the signals in the city, but it was still better than without the boosters. Thanks for the comment!

    • @KenHeron
      @KenHeron  8 років тому

      +BoxOfAir Productions I'm sure flying over a large metropolitan area wasn't the most scientifically proper place to do a distance test, as I'm certain there was interference. I only picked it for the visuals. Plus, people will get different results with different equipment setups. (Manual channel selecting or auto, etc.)

  • @redhonu

    The antenna boosters are cool, but the extra range comes from the way reduced range behind you so expect about a quarter or less of the original range behind you.

    • @KenHeron
      @KenHeron  8 років тому +1

      +Fallguy1959 Hey fallguy! I'm not that great at color-correcting, but one thing I do to all my Phantom video is increase the CONTRAST. for some reason it records at very low contrast, so bumping that up really blackens the blacks, which is what you want for a good cinematic look. I also play with the saturation a bit. "Adjustment Layers" are your friend!

    • @TheSkyPod
      @TheSkyPod 8 років тому

      +Ken Heron So do you shoot in D-log , 4k , 1080p , 60fps , etc. ? My latest video around the stadium I tried Dlog 2.7 and Vivid color. Corrected it in Powerdirector (slight adjustments) , and it got better , but not quite where I want to be. My name is Ken as well, but you can call me Ken . lol

    • @pazi040480
      @pazi040480 8 років тому

      +Fallguy1959 D-log is not good . Better option is None and then make some correction with Premiere Pro etc. If you use D-log there is more distortions on video so better to not used any built corrections .

    • @KenHeron
      @KenHeron  8 років тому

      +Fallguy1959 I shoot in 4K 30fps. .MP4 format. I wouldn't use the on-board app settings for color. Premiere has everything you'll need to make the video look great.

    Wow! Will these extenders work on the Phantom 3 4K. Remember the P3 4k doesn't have Lightbridge and uses Extended WiFi but I would think these antenna extenders should still work. Also do you have to have some sort of special permit to fly over a city like this? If so, how do you go about getting it?Thanks and great vid

    Very cool & great video - but in using these, have you found that the signal is more directional, in that you need to keep your transmitter "aimed" more or less directly towards where the Phantom is? I am thinking it would narrow the beam somewhat, however the further out you are the wider the beam would get.
    Have you tried flying behind yourself (transmitter pointed away from the Phantom) with these on?

    • @KenHeron
      @KenHeron  8 років тому +1

      Indeed, these are VERY directional. You must "aim" them at the vehicle or it'll go into "Return Home" mode.
