    It's a good idea, at the end of every season, forbWinterising, to run the engine in a barrel of fresh water, or use those earphone type things for water supply - imho water barrel is better, as it heats up which helps remove salt from the water circulation System, then dump the old oil so it isn't in the engine and likely to damage it with combustion acids over the winter, whip the plug out, and while still out, put something like Redex or new clean engine oil into the Cylinder, a few cc's, and withba cloth over the plugbhole, use the pull cord to spread that oil around the cylinder and onto the rings. If the extracted oil is in a bit of s state, you can do a bit of a flush with some cheap hydraulic fluid, and smoothly rotate the engine with the pull cord for a couple of minutes, leave for 10 minutes for a tea break (biscuits optional) then repeat the 2 minutes with the pull cord, then drain the hydraulic fruid. Oil ways should now be nice and clean. Then fill with fresh oil, pull the pull cord a few times to spread the oil, check and adjust the Spark plug and replace in the engine. Now replace the gearbox oil, and replace the water pump impeller, greasedvready to go, check seals, replace if necessary, and reassemble with greasing where needed as you go. Then put the Outboard on the engine stand, cover it with a sheet or such, and it's safe and sound not deteriorating over Winter. That should be sufficient arse covering if you haven't got the service/maintenance Manual. Nice Outboards Tohatsu, I've had 4, 3 Tohstsu branded, and one Mercury, all 2 stroke. Still got a Winterised one in the Garage racked next to a Winterised 4 hp Yamaha 2 stroke. Next Boat Dinghy, they'll get started up again (both may need ignition parts after how long they've been there). Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob, who may get one of these new Tohatsu 6 hp, to look Posh on the New Boat. nah, just kidding, I just like the look of them tbh plus they look excellent on fuel consumption if treated right. 👍🙂

    Are you familiar with the oil drain bolt has a gasket type washer that has to be replaced each time?

  • @jimcatx3090
    @jimcatx3090 5 років тому +2

    U should use thred sealer or antiseise on the bolts on the lower gear case makes them easy for serviceinnthe future

      Your quite right. I think I only used marine grease. I’ve never had a problem though.

    • @jimcatx3090

      BeMoreBear I would rather use antisieze but the manuals states to use thred sealer on most omc and Mercury’s

    Very helpful after much swearing. I finally figured out my problem was the shift rod not going up through. My issue now is my reverse position , I can’t get to reverse. What’s the best way to tighten it all up? Thanks! And who needs reverse?

    • @dp47280
      @dp47280  4 роки тому +2

      There is a little trial and error BUT the trick is to loosen the clamp and shine a torch in the hole in the leg so you can see. SLOWLY move the shift lever so that you know which way it moves. For example moving the lever forward moves the shift linkage up(or down). Once you know that the aim is to make sure that the leg is in the same position as the shift linkage. My reverse was a bit tight so I just altered the position a little. You’ll get there. Let me know if you sort it.👍

      @@dp47280 thank you. My shift linkage itself shifted really hard for some reason. Seems to be working well now! Also, did you start the entire procedure in reverse? Awesome video!

      I had the same issue and was cursing up a storm. The nuetral position on the rod has to be exact and it's a cm in length. By the time I finally got it right I was wanting to sell it.

    Great video. Do you happen to know how to remove the powerhead? I bought one of these engines and it's got a leaking gasket where the powerhead meets the gear case. It's leaking water (and I think exhaust).

    Hello, I have a problem selecting neutral. In neutral, my propeller must be free? If I adjust it so that my selector neutral is set with a free propeller, I can no longer shift into reverse.
    Thanks for your advice.

    Your gearcase oil looked kind of milky which means its contaminated with water. Your seals appear to be bad.

    Hello, can you tell me the procedure and parts to buy to unblock Tohatsu 4 stroke engine 6 hp bi-ylindres 2019 purchases to switch to 9.8 hp? thanks

    • @dp47280
      @dp47280  5 років тому

      sorry, what do you need help with? - what needs unblocking?

    • @brownnoise357
      @brownnoise357 2 роки тому

      Seems mistaken. It isn't the single cylinder 6 hp you get to 9.8 hp it's the 8 hp thing Cylinder. You either get a 9.8hp carburetor, or I'm pretty sure you can get away with having the 8 hp Carburettor rejected to the same jets as the 9.8 hp ? Other than different jets, it appears the 8 hp carburetor is identical in every other way ? Check with a Tohstsu Dealer to be in the safe side that is all that's involved. Personally, I'd stick with the Outboard at 8 hp, as likely to have a much lower stressed everything, for a much longer service life, plus if upped to 9.8 hp, don't forget to change the Prop to suit the new power output. Hope that helps. Bob. 👍

    Thanks for posting. Nice video. What's the trick for sliding the shift rod through the clamp on the shift linkage? My friend and I spent three hours yesterday trying to connect the clamp through the hole in the side and couldn't get it. Also we had trouble getting the shift rod to go back through the little hole on the top of the case.

    • @dp47280
      @dp47280  5 років тому

      Chuck Gullage I used a set of long thin forceps to align the clamp and gradually raised the leg until it mated. Pretty tricky but ok when you can see where it’s meant to go.

    • @CGRLCDR
      @CGRLCDR 5 років тому

      Thanks for getting back to me. I ended up using a right-angle Allen wrench with sticky plumbers butty to get the clamps in place. Surprisingly, that worked and I was able to bolt in the front side of the clamp. Now I can't get the shift rod to adjust properly. I'm getting to hate this motor. Grrrr.

    • @dp47280
      @dp47280  5 років тому

      It was a bit of trial and error but there are only 3 positions the gear lever can be in and only 3 the clutch can be in. The trick is to work out when the leg is in neutral (the prop will spin freely) and start from there. Match the 2 and tighten the clamp and life will be good again.

    • @CGRLCDR
      @CGRLCDR 5 років тому +1

      @@dp47280 Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to give it another whack tomorrow. It feels like the shift rod is stuck.

    Are these good motors? And fast

    • @dp47280
      @dp47280  4 роки тому +1

      TheJoesmoe1987 I still have mine and find it good and reliable so far. As for fast??.... mine with standard prop on a 3.6m inflatable will do 13mph. That’s just a touch more than planing speed with one person. It can be lifted by one person easily. It won’t plane with 2 people. They do what they say on the tin and so far I can’t complain.

    • @8180634
      @8180634 4 роки тому

      I have the same motor for a few years. It has been reliable, super fuel efficient a and goes about 17mph with just me in a 13 foot aluminum boat, 13mph in the same boat with 2 people.

  • @127cmore
    @127cmore 4 роки тому

    Why didn't you change your plug , cheap as chips anyway and keep one spare on boat

    • @dp47280
      @dp47280  4 роки тому

      I probably could have done. Because they don’t take much oil I tighten up and if it leaks I’ll change it then. Having an oil flush if I need to won’t do it any harm. Never had a problem with the oils plugs but maybe worth keeping a spare handy.
