- I picked up a Tohatsu 6hp outboard from craigslist the other day so this is the first test run. I also learned a major lesson about locking down the engine keeping the throttle low when switching into reverse. This could have been a lot worse and I was quite lucky.

Just hit crabpot line w Tohatsu 4 stroke, got some red light flashes and sounds different maybe tiny rattle, few inches below motor some lube oil. Few inches above waterline seems hot to touch, but I never really touched it before. So, have to figure out how screwed am I, ha, not at all or much. Good videos, helped me.

Rule number one. Use the clamps . Luckily nobody got hurt.
Change the inpeller if no water comes out

Thanks for the video, you have great patience. I have the same motor, bought it used off a kid last spring. Mine too does not spit out water. Maybe my impeller is bad? Will this cause it to overheat? I wonder if this could be the reason it has been running so intermittently? Runs good, then dies? Hard to start, unreliable. Can I ask what you use to clean the carburetor? I could use some help here bro? Thanks again.
Yes 100% you should not be running it without water spitting out. Too many overheats and you'll have some major issues like seals and rings burning up. Check the impeller and make sure it is there and in tact. They are fairly easy to replace and a ton of videos out there showing how. If the impeller is good then it might just be clogged somewhere. Connecting a hose to the output and flushing it backwards has helped me previously. Keep in mind I am not a mechanic, it would be BEST to take it to someone who knows what they are doing but if you're like me and like to learn new things with accepting the risk, go for it!
I have the same engine, sick and tired of it, not running properly, idle ok, when in gear it, it just doesn’t run properly. Changed impeller 2 times, still not really good, not enough water coming out, all lines are checked and not clogged. Changing impeller easy, putting the lower part back on, a nightmare!
