I am thinking that the debut of the familiar (and annoying) "School House Rocky" version of the intro in 1981 was due to ABC's rights to the original intro likely having expired, and an updated intro was necessary as part of a possible renewal agreement. It sucks, but that's how contracts work.
I remember this intro. My family first got cable TV around 1978 (it was definitely during the 1977-78 season, as I recall seeing the NBC Fun Machine bumpers on a Sunday morning in summer 1978). Nothing against "School House Rocky", but the 1981 update is not overly great and was overplayed even through the late 1990s. That update is the version many millennials grew up with, and was likely more designed to profit from the popularity of comic book superheroes during that time.
With all due respect for "school house rocky" (not much), this is the AUTHENTIC DEFINITIVE schoolhouse rock intro that the 70s kids were brought up on.
Do you remember the shorter clip in between commercials where the kids are in the classroom looking out the window wishing that they were playing in the snow? Same music as the outro here.
I remember that one being in use in the *very* early '80s, but always thought that the one-room schoolhouse in the middle of a snow-covered landscape always seemed a little odd to me.
I'm not sure if any of you noticed this, but those days will be coming back, but it won't exactly be the same. Both ABC and NBC may follow CBS' lead in unveiling plans to return to Saturday morning cartoons(you can thank MeTV and Weigel Communications for forcing CBS' hand in 2021). BTW, CBS already allowed its Litton Industries deal to expire in 2023, which is why they unveiled these SatAM plans- both ABC and NBC may follow suit, CW is likely continuing its Litton deal and Fox is out of it, entirely. The 1990 CTA is outdated and needs to be reformed. Let's stay on top if this and see where this story progresses!!!
A compilation PSA promo elsewhere on UA-cam had the first few seconds of this intro, but not the whole thing. I had to seek this out to see what I was missing.
Who here gets a WARM,FUZZY feeling on the inside when you see this, and other things like this, that we as GEN X, grew up on? I was around 7 when I saw this for the first time. School House Rocky kind of gets on my nerves a little. Like this intro and outro much better.
I think "School House Rocky" was more to capitalize on the popularity of comic book superheroes in the 1970s and 1980s. This opening, used from 1973 (when Schoolhouse Rock debuted) through 1981, was by far the best. Many of the younger people in Generation X remember this theme quite well and are likely in their 50s now, or soon to turn 50. The updated intro debuted in September 1981 - the week that "Goldie Gold and Action Jack" and "Thundarr the barbarian" debuted. It's a shame that many millennials missed out on such a groovy version of the opening.

I remember that intro back in 1977.
Nostalgia absolutely my childhood!!
This is the CORRECT Intro!! This DEFINITELY bring back memories!! I don't know why ABC changed the Intro.. It's ALWAYS the new guy!
I always liked this original intro over that Schoolhouse Rocky!

Oh wow! This is going really old school. This is the first opening I remember.

Me too
I remember this intro!
THIS is the intro I fondly remember.
This was the intro I knew: the first one I saw, at age 4. When "Schoolhouse Rocky" returned in the 80's, I always thought, "Hey! They changed it!"
I watched this too as a kid!
I was 3 when I watched this intro!
You mean to say "School House Rocky" was shown in the 1970s?
Thank you for uploading I love school house rocky opening too
Wow I guess you have to be in your fifties to remember these intros.
Im 54, about to be 55, so yes.
I'll be 50 in June.
That’s right good guess, we are. And it’s great to remember this!
And the best would be, after watching this appropriated intro from Figure 8, they would actually SHOW Figure 8!
That was the best.
I saw it that way at least once.

Yep, it was.
True
The original intro. Yes......

The intro and outro were from 'Figure Eight'
Yep
Hmm.I’m trying to remember that part
Sure do remember. The heading in that clip says: America rock.
