Are you experiencing a flashing check engine light and random misfires on one or multiple cylinders? VW and Audi 2.0T TSI engines are known for failing stock coil packs. Many owners experience these failures shortly after tuning their cars. Luckily, replacement takes only a few minutes and is relatively inexpensive.
In this video we show how to remove the stock coil packs and spark plugs on a 2012 Volkswagen MK6 GTI 2.0T TSI EA888 engine. We then replace the failing parts with our in-house assembled ignition service kit. This DIY will be relatively similar on all VW/Audi vehicles that use this engine including the Tiguan, Jetta GLI, CC, Passat, Beetle, EOS, Q3, Q5, A4, A5, and others.

ECS Tuning my VW CC 2015 has 50k, how often I need to replace spark plugs and coil packs?
I bought both and I dont even have the thing to grab the plugs with... and it specifically is in the thumbnail of the tool kit IM CONFUSED???? why was it not in the extension pack if its in the thumbnail..??
DOES THIS WORK FOR 2012 VW CC 2.0T
Check engine light concern.
Hey Guys,
After you change the spark plugs and coils will the check engine light reset on its own or do you have to clear the codes to make it go away. I changed my plugs and coils and the problem is gone....car idles perfectly, but Check engine light is on. Any ideas?
I changed my first coil pack and spark plugs. I feel so accomplished. Getting the GTi has made me more diy than ever
Iv only seen Zack from donut media. It's awesome seeing him work on a GTI
I think ECS was his old gig. Opened this video and thought he looked familiar
@@Briznor That would be correct.
I thought the exact same thing
Took the words out of my mouth
I popped in half way through the video and was debating if that was his voice for a sold 2 minutes before I restarted the video to check.
My local VW dealer just quoted me an IN/OUT price of $770.90 so I purchased the kit myself for $210 (incl tools) as a Christmas gift from my husband. Parts arrived here on Sunday so I completed the spark plugs / coils in less than an hour the next morning in less than one hour. And now I have friends who want me to help them change out plugs / coils in their cars. Maybe I should make a career change from a massage therapist to a mechanic??? LOL. Thanks so much for this VIDEO!!!
Oh, and the tools and kit came with exactly what I needed and used - :)
ECS Tuning - My P0304 code is back - misfiring again. Engine stutters a little during the first few miles driving. Can you tell me the order of the plugs from 1-4? Is #1 on the far left and #4 is on the far right? I'm going to remove the wiring harness and check the #4 coil and plug for fuel smells or oil.
The plugs are numbered 1-2-3-4 from left to right and have a firing order of 1-3-4-2 clockwise
@@ecstuning - so I removed and checked the #4 plug and coil and it is still misfiring on 4. I’m concerned about the wiring harness clicking in to the coil. I can get it clicked in on the 1 & 4 coils but the 2 & 3 doesn’t want to click and I believe that’s my issue. Is there a trick to make sure they click in? I know about the bump on the coil for it to snap in to. The car is running less smooth than before I first changed the plugs & coils.
@ecstunning @jeweloconnor700 hey folks what ended up happening with this one? I’m planning to order these because I have a misfire on #3 but worried I may mess the car up further. Thanks in advance!
My son bought your ignition kit for his 2006 A4 2.0. I just installed the parts this morning after having seen this video and it was an easy and quick procedure! His Audi almost feels like a new car now! He also bought the Schwaben plug socket from you, what an outstanding tool to have for changing plugs! Thanks again!
Changed out all 4 of my plugs and packs thanks to this video. None of it was difficult, but two of the coil pack clips were stuck and took me like 20 mins to pop off. After that it was literally as long as this video.
I was going to buy the $25 removal tool from you, but since you never used it I decided to save the money.
Thanks!
🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂
Ha
savage 😂
Same with the ratchet. Why use the ratchet if you have to use the torque wrench to tighten the spark plugs anyways?
I'm grateful for this video because it let me fix my car on a Sunday afternoon instead of having to get it towed to a repair shop. That said, you guys make it look easier than it is. Here are all the things that went wrong for me: (1) When I tried to detach the electrical connectors, one of the plastic tabs wouldn't un-click. Eventually it broke off and I had to pry the connector off with a screwdriver. (2) I couldn't find the magic spark plug wrench with the magnet in it, so I used a regular wrench. After unscrewing each plug, I had to hunch over my car with needle nose pliers and a flashlight in order to fish the old spark plug out of the engine. (3) The new spark plugs went in easily, but when I tried to extract my wrench, the head of the wrench popped off and stayed down in the engine with the spark plug. I had to re-insert it and try again, very carefully, over and over. The first three cylinders took three or four tries, the last one took about 20. (4) I didn't really hear the power clips click back in when I reconnected them, so I'm a little unsure that they're properly connected, but I pushed them in as hard as I could and I'm hoping for the best.
Sorry Frank, but I believe they made it look exactly as easy as it is. A spark plug socket that holds the plug in place is about as basic of a tool as it gets. But if you don't want to buy one, next time just pull them out using the coil. You'll notice it pops right on like a glove :)
Great comment Frank! Very helpful heads up for the DIY'er when attempting this replacement.
Try using a spark plug socket next time. As far as the socket popping off the extension, I always wrap some tape around the socket & extension.
2013 vw cc sport turbo misfiring bucking spitting lurching no power. watched this video and went directly to auto zone had them diagnose it and the error codes were po 300 302 303 and 304. I purchased 4 coil packs 4 spark plugs a spark plug socket and ratchet extension (mine was stolen) it cost 132.00 and some change. Runs better now than ever. Thank you for the tutorial.
Took me less than 30 minutes to change mine on my A3! Soooo easy!!!!
Nice!
Just did this on my 2016 A5 I didnt gap them, didnt put the goop on the plugs and just snugged the plugs down with a socket wrench. Car runs great and I enjoyed your video.
THANK YOU ECS! I'm not a car guy. I replace the bulbs and filters: nothing more. I watched this video a few times, purchased the right tools from your site and did the job by myself in less than an hour. Not only did it cost me less than going to the dealer but I was also able to purchase better plugs and some new GTI floor mats. All for less than going to the dealer. Car starts and idles much better. Thank you! I'll be getting coil packs next.
Should have uses Urotuning and saved $50
I'm going to do my first coil pack and spark plug change on my golf r. I can't wait to feel what I've been missing since bought used. I do not think they were ever changed or replaced so this is exciting for me. I just got a tune as well so I can't wait 😊
Might be buying one of these soon. A 2013 manual, I can TOTALLY use these tips to talk the guy down.
Nice video. None of the clips on the ignition coils were broken (2013 Golf R 152,000 mild). One coil pack had been changed in its life. So I changed them all. 3/4 NGK plugs were properly gapped. Like the hint to connect the wiring plugs before pushing them all the way down.
And I tested the change and it had full power in all gears and I stopped at 140 mph
awesome video! short and to the point. kit installed perfectly and woke the GTI up after getting sluggish around 58K miles on my 2013 Driver's Ed
Dude one of the best vids simplified I’ve ever seen thanks!!
Love ECS tuning. Used to ship their parts to Canada. Great company overall.
Everyone who is on the fence about these coil packs. I went to go APR stage 1 low torque this past weekend. Burnt out the second coil pack immediately. Had to reflash the ECU to factory settings and limp home.
My car had been out of commission with a misfire in cylinder #2 for five days until I popped them in. Now everything is fine, but what an inconvenience! Buy these ahead of time!
Takes 5 minutes and I didn’t even need a tool.
P.S.- keep a couple spare coil packs with your spare tire. You’ll thank me one day
fantastic and clean video. thanks for this! i need to replace my spark plugs and feel confident i can perform this. looks really straight forward. I mean, some Ikea furniture i've built has had plenty more steps with less instruction.
Oh cool, I found Zach Jobe without even knowing I was looking for him.
My buddy’s 2012 GTI just threw the code for a misfire and I immediately found this video for him.
Glad we could help! 🙌
Thanks for the video and the reasonably prices coil/spark kit. First time working on my '12 GLi. The whole thing would have taken me less than 10 minutes had I not dropped the ratchet handle down into the engine bay (which then took 20 minutes to fish out from the plastic bottom cover with a telescoping magnet - rookie mistake).
yeh..always a nightmare those frigging tools that get stuck.
You just saved me $250. I did this myself.
Wtf I was just looking for a tutorial and Zach jobs face pops up, what a pleasant surprise
What a great tip about connecting the coil packs. Thanks. Much easier.
Wait Zach came from ECS ???
Thanks you.. you saved me money vw wanted to charge me 250 bucks..to do it unreal
Uhhh what! Had no idea zach was at ECS. Now I like ECS even more haha.
Thank you for this video! I just changed my ignition coils in my 2011 Tiguan...super easy and fast. Your instructions were very clear and easy to follow...yeah I hit that subscribe button 👍🏾
Gretchen Strutzenberg girl! You are the comb. I’m trying to see if I can do this and save a few coins
Hi it’s any specific order on the coil packs???
@@raulbridygarcia I just did it from left to right. I don't know if that matters, but I like doing it in order.
Well dang. Wasn't expecting to see Zach here. Lol.
THANK YOU!!!!
This video saved me $700! 🙏
$700? they taking you to the poor house straight up... only reason i know how to work on my cars is because I was in that spot too with my jetta... $1200 to replace the throttle body? Hell nah fixed that shit for like $50 lol
Could someone tell me if there is any difference between the Reds and the Blues? or are they the same?
800 for this wow I’m glad I’m here
You were quoted $800 for this service???
Are the coils in order by numbers? I’ve searched everywhere to make sure but haven’t had any luck. Need to know which one coil #3 is.
Good video btw.
Oh dang, I didn't realize I was gonna see Zack here.
just got a kit and swapped all four after getting a misfire in c2 after having a misfire in c1 a year or so ago
So glad you made this and so glad i watched! I was thinking to use dielectric grease like you did instead of trying to do the boot too which could possibly push grease up. Great vid thanks!
Didn't expect to see Zach here after watching so much Donut :p
Additionally, we ad a very tiny bit of anti seize to the threads of the spark plugs. Nice video
Well don't, because you're definitely overtorquing the plugs if so.
@@MrS22222 I just removed plugs from 2.0 TSI motor. three comes out easily, the fourth was a clencher. I was so concerned about breaking off plug and exercised a huge amount of patience, blaster, and gently worked it out.
My money going forward is the $2 pouch of copper-based anti-seize. I've yet to hear a good reason to avoid - other than pride.
I did spend a bunch of time validating torque spec on my torque wrench @ 22 ft-lbs. I was surprised that Autolite Mega/Uber/Platinum/Incredible plugs were not gapped correctly (not even close).
@@nextlayersecurity I'd highly suggest using the proper bosch plugs for VWs and the proper torque spec for those plugs are 25Nm (18 ftlbs). An anti seize lubricated fastener will increase the actual torque value on the wrench by ~25% because that torque is achieved with friction, so you put a lot more torque on those things than they call for.
BTW I've had 3 defective autolite platinums in a pack of 10 before, I will never use them again.
@@MrS22222 finally, if I've over-torqued plugs, I'm assuming it's a bad idea to remove and re-install because this defeats point of crush washers. should I just wait for the autolite plugs to expire in next 1-2 years? haha. To be specific, I'm using "Autolite Iridium Ultra Finewire".
@@nextlayersecurity I'd just leave them in there for now and see if they cause any problems tbh. If not, no biggie. If you get any misfire codes, opt for the factory bosch equivalent to save some money on the exact same part as the VW branded ones.
What a surprise seeing jobe here
ECS Tuning you guys need to have an old school VW project turn that into a street monster and video it from start to finish. Zach keep up the good videos we all make mistakes its all good.
Thanks for the info Zak glad u went to Donut even tho I'm a VW guy ECS aren't the best people so I understand why u left but UroTuning is the best 👌
Great video, thanks man 👌💪💪💪
Idk if you see this zach but I looked this up for my jetta and I had no idea it was gonna be you I will subscribe to this channel and like this video
Wire connector removal from coil packs? Would have been nice to explain how the connection clips works and how they can break, as was mentioned, one was broke. Thanks!
Hi, red coolpack, are those same as for
Audi R9
Glad for answer
Johnny D Bergh
What a pleasant surprise zack
Great vid bro. I have a question do you have to replace the coil packs too when replacing the spark plugs?
Dealer wanted $633 to replace my plugs and coil packs. Did it myself with parts from Autozone for $140.
The stealer 😁
My local VW dealer just quoted me an IN/OUT price of $770.90 so I purchased the kit myself. Should be arriving here on Sunday so I'm looking forward to the challenge of working on my own car for once.
what is that cable that is attached to the bolt that has a cap on it between the 2nd and the 3 coil, thats not attached to anything?
Are the rubber boot ones as good as the ones you put in this car..my red coil packs have rubber boots on them.. what is the difference between the two.. I have a 2014 r-line beetle 2.0..thank you very much
do u have to tune for these to work
As always, very thorough, simple & great video to follow. Just waiting for my kit to arrive from you guys. I went to iE Pro Stage II, on my 13 MK6 R & yes, missfire on 1 & 4! Great company, Thanks Again!!!
Did that fox tour misfire? I’m having the same issue
@@fatdrunkguy7006 The tune was too much for the old coil packs & plugs. I bought new plugs & R8 coil packs from ECS Tuning & problems went away. Been running gr8 for many months now, misfiring gone.
Thanks for the tips I found out what was wrong with my vw
I can’t get my coil packs out in 2013 mk7. Should you warm up the engine first?
What is the part sitting in the center of the 4 coil packs mine seems to be broken it has like ceramic insides
How much mm is the spark plug ? Is it 14 or 16 ?
Do you need to do the gaping for the spark plugs ?
Stock is 0.032
just picked up this kit for my audi - awesome possum!
Thanks Zach I owe you one.. this was a great video
Doesn’t this dude work at donut media?! Wtf
He used to work for ECS, they took em... for the better IMO.
He does now!
i knew i seen him somewhere
On top of the engine, between the second and third spark plug there is a round wire that looks like a mini light bulb socket. What is it for?
The wire goes to the back of the engine
Any advice for stubborn tabs on the harness? Broke a couple but they still won't budge. Also took a small flathead to the square hole to try and pry it loose but nothing. I'm afraid of warping or chewing up the plastic further.
This is the most sure-fire solution. This tool is specifically made to get stubborn VAG connectors apart. www.ecstuning.com/b-schwaben-parts/vag-connector-removal-tool/002916sch01a/
This happens to me too! Broken tab, achy thumb and still can't get the harness to come loose and am afraid if I give more grunt it will completely break! Very frustrating, I bought the correct tools and everything and would like to do this myself instead of paying a shop $100 for labor. Did you buy this tool yet and try it?
I just broke a couple of tabs trying to pull mine and couldn't get them off. My (mechanic) dad shows up, grabs a tiny little flat head screwdriver, bends it (so it's more like a little pick) and he stuck it into the end of the connector (closer to the coil) while pulling and it came right off.
Came here to make sure I didn’t need any special tools, stuck around cause of Jobe
Not sure why your not using feeler gap tool.
Hi, I have Passat cc 2013 TDI, automatic gearbox, the issue is- when the engine is running I hear a sound in the engine kind a little vibration or probably engine’s cover shaking, but once I put my foot on the accelerator the sound goes away immediately, also today when I parked the car on a (P) gear the engine shut down by itself, and that all happened after I floored the gas pedal on the high way. Hope you can give some advices about why this is happening. Thank you 😊
when changing spark plugs do you have to disconnect the battery?
He is my hero!!
Thanks man you saved me ab $400
Was not expecting to see Zack Jobe when I clicked on this video
Does the ecs assembled kit come with pre gapped spark plugs,or do they need to be checked?
Is the torque spec the same for a 1.8 20v using same spark plugs ?
Can you make a video on how remove it when it's broken?
Thanks! This helped me to do it!
So what is the correct amount of torque and sparkplug gap for a 2009 GTI stock? Thanks!
Do all coil packs normally click in, just got some for a Cupra and they don't really pop on and now I have a misfire.. cheers
same. mine dont click at al. and engine runs like crap.
@@vindieu I found I had a small amount of water in on socket.. Also replaced all the coils with new Bosch units and it's made the car so much more responsive, the packs even feel heavyer than the original ones. 👍
Can I put these in my stock VW Gti? I have no tunes or anything done all stock. Should I just get OEM or will these be fine?
I broke all of the tabs except for one. Does it need replacement
same. these are britte af. my engine doesnt idle well now.
Do you recommend replacing the Factory spark plugs if you're going to a stage 2 or the OEM spark plugs work fine as long as you upgrade the ignition coils?
I got the oem ignition service kit (bosche double platinum plugs) and whatever the red coils are. Is that fine for a stage 1 apr tune?
What is the firing order or what is the 1st cylinder and what is the 3rd cylinder for the 2015A3 2.0T
Put any Vaseline around the rubber of the coils?
Do these void the warranty
Man, I love you guys. Soooooo much better than listening to that nasally voice of the Deutsche auto parts dude, or that aging hipster dude from EE that sounds like an instructor I had in college who had ZERO personality.
Concise, dude has personality, doesn't talk at you like you're a dumb ass; love it.
Erik Olson I can’t stand that guy from DAP - so fucking bland, it hurts.
You gotta use the little hole on gapper to gap them correctly without damaging the spark plug
At 2:06 what is that random cable in between the 2nd and 3rd coil pack? I have that just hanging out too but it looks like it goes somewhere
I'm changing plugs in my 2013 tiguan 102,000 miles. Should I replace coil packs also?
Do you not need to drive so many miles to break them in?
How long of a extension is needed for the 3/8 ratchet?
do you need to tune the car for them or no?
Do the Apr coils fit onto the 2.0t A3 8P, I know that these so but is something different in the Apr packs?
Any suggestions on what I should do if the coil pack won’t slide back in correctly? I’m having trouble snapping it back in.. does it need a lot of force?
Can you guys make a video of how to do that job on a MK7 GTI? I know it’s a little different.
Hi, I have this coil 07k905715F. But there are other coils with same numbers but with different letter at the end. Like A or B or D. Does it matters? Thanks
Bro just gave a vw a chiropractic adjustment 😂👌
Wow, no bolt to hold the paks down, like on my old Hyundai??? Neat!!!
25nm to tighten it?
Is it not necessary / recommended to add anti-seize compound to the plug threads?
i don't think its necessary.
Dont use it it causes threads to strip a wet thread using dry thread torque specs causes problems
Thanks for the video! I noticed that my car hesitates when I’m idle but still in drive mode waiting at a red light or once I pull up to a stop. The moment I hit the accelerator the car starts running smoothly again. Why is that? My car is a 2007 A4 Audi A4 2 L turbo four cylinder convertible. It has 175,000 km on it. Thank you in advance for any suggestions you may have. I forgot to mention that all the spark plugs and the oil and filters were recently changed. I believe my engine may be burning coolant because I keep having to fill it up every month or so. One of the coils was recently changed. Do you recommend me changing the whole coil pack?
Coil pack is not a routine maintenance item like the spark plugs to change out. Most likely culprit is intake valve cleaning. These direct injected engine are notorious in intake valves getting gunked up with carbon deposits cuz the design doesn’t let premium fuel be able to clean them. The misfires usually happen at 50-60k miles when intake valves get too gunked up.
Are you the only place I can go to ..to get my car tuned
