Cleaning my Disgusting CDJs from Burning Man

- I'm back! And this time I'm tearing apart a CDJ2000nexus that was used for a whole week at Burning Man.
The playa dust found at Black Rock City damages electronics due to its highly alkaline nature. To properly clean any piece of gear that has come back from the playa, a full disassembly and mild acid solution bath for every major component is necessary. This is my process for cleaning my CDJs.
Do not bring (or send anything to) the playa without being financially and emotionally prepared to completely destroy it.

LOOL play sandstorm on them
If I buy the PK rig I’m looking at then most definitely YES
10 hour set of Sandstorm
🤦
Sandstorm is by Darude
yes
Gloves for safety (not wearing gloves in any of the video)
😂 yo fr wtf
risk. assessment. hahah
ESD gloves would be nice yes haha
Where's part 2 of the video showing the Doctors cleaning out the lungs of the people who used the CDJs?
Its hilarious how the video is made up like a tutorial as if anybody would ever do the same thing 😂
Agree! You can try half of it! Taking stuff apart is easy, it's putting it back together that makes it unrealistic 🤣
I once took apart my cdj700 to fix my tempo fader... 3 years later it is still on a shelf in pieces tucked away
Well, some CDJs will have to go there every year..
the last show I produced the fog machines got out of hand. I will be cleaning my nexus gear. It is not unthinkable.... and he got you to watch and get him tube credit $$$
MrJoe000097 now u have put this comment someone else is gonna do it it’s gonna become a trend
My 5cents as an electronics technician/electronics designer:
* When reattaching self tapping screws to plastic, always rotate the screw slowly anti clockwise until you feel that screw to drop back to its original threads and then, with veeery little force try to turn it clock wise and see if it'll seat back to it's original thread (it should), if you dont' do this, you can mess up the threads by creating new ones.
* When cleaning electronics, you want to avoid nylon brushes and microfibre cloths, they easily create static electricity and that can zap the components and break them or cause intermittent faults that can be hard to fix or trace down. Use normal kitchen towel paper and ESD safe brushes that one can find from ebay with few dollars.
* Be very, VERY careful with the laser and the laser head mechanics and the motor. The laser head ways need to be lubricated after cleaning with proper lube (type of which I can't remember from the top of my head, but it's not very lean, it's more like thin grease than liquid meant for plastics). the laser lens itself should never see any alcohol or other solvents unless you're sure there are no plastic parts within that mechanism (which there usually is). Isopropyl alcohol attacks some plastics quite aggressively. Motor assembly shouldn't see any alcohol or other solvents (no, not even water) since the mechanism will lose the lubrication and it'll break prematurely and it's horribly difficult to lubricate... can be done but it's not easiest thing to take apart :D
* Be careful with any remaining solvents on the boards, they can start to ingress moisture over time or attack plastics and rubber components. Thus isopropyl alcohol is recommended since it'll evaporate very quickly and thoroughly.
Great info. What's the best case scenario for cleaning the jog wheels and the top of a Pioneer Xdj Rx 3 DJ controller? Some of the plastic is shiny polished like and some not.
Good info, now I know my laptop screws are fucked
"dust is just boneless rock"

@@j_o_s_e_g_a_m_b_o_a8889 what was my comment lol
I am a product demonstrator for Pioneer DJ. You are awesome for this video! It's helpful for even just maintenance cleaning.
Should’ve put them into diagnostic mode to test all the buttons and functions. Hold memory and tempo +3/6/10 when powering on, then scroll through menu with back/tag button. I’m sure you already knew this, but just in case 🙃
do all cdj have this mode?
du Bb I’ve only been able to test it on cdj-2000 models. Regular, Nexus & NXS2. Not sure about 900 or any other model. I’m assuming there is some kind of button combination to get into a menu similar
Love your VJ loops
This caused me so much anxiety watching him rip it apart lol. I'd never get all that back together 😂
Me too but thencagain its hire stock lucky dude he must have loads of cdjs just like sitting ghere casually
should have sold them on ebay "barely used"
Maybe I did
Nice... love the video, our company has about 12 cdjs nxs and does take about a day or two to clean them all
Used to clean units that were smoke and fire damaged. A commercial dishwasher does wonders on most of the parts for the pre wash step. Do not use the dry cycle as the heat can damage plastic. Air dry with the alcohol only on the PCB's. Some silkscreen is damaged by the solvent. Odor permeates plastic so this does not apply to the dust, but Smoke X removes smoke odor.
This video is pretty cool, i might clean mine too after watching this!
You're insane!!!! Congrats on the amazing cleaning/restoring to former glory work on these!!
It blows my mind that you were able to put this back together. Props to you for knowing your shit
Haha its usually another kind of white dust that needs cleaning out.
😂😂😂😂
That's a process and a half but DAMN the before and after is awesome
OMG !!! 😳 Thanks for sharing man!
What kind of ip rating lighting fixtures would you recommend for an event like burning man
Thank you for posting this!
i literally just said to myself yesterday that i needed to check if you had posted a video recently, as I hadn;t gotten a notification in what seemed like forever!
Your amazing. I cant believe you cleaned them. WOW. I still have clothes with dust from burning man 4 years ago. DO you have any videos where you fix USB port?
Pls Do more of these tech videos!! They are so awesome and interesting to watch!
great to see you again!
This video made me extremely nervous 😂 good that you got your CDJ's cleaned 👍🏻
4:52 Him shaking that PCB viciously with one hand while standing over a concrete surface was honestly terrifying.
Really interesting video man! love it.
MA BOI IS ALIVE
welcome back ❤️
Nice vid! We clean them with the same method when dealing with dust.
If they come back sticky from liquids we use Multifoam just spraying it on the cdj let it do its job for 1 minute and then take it of with a soft towel.
And respect for you (even with cdj’s from someone else) to send them to Burning Man!
I had to do this to a 2000NXS that had been soaked in beer! That stuff gets to places you wouldn't believe! 2 hours later it was spotless and running! A tip for engineers - I Never buy cans of spray air, instead I use a large airbed pump with a long pipe! £20 and lasts for years. I Really enjoyed thgis video, it's always good to see new tips and tricks explained so clearly. Bravo!
What about an oil free air compressor
@@Co-km6cl They will cost Way more than £20!
Always top notch videos!
Wow at the beginning the Dj Equipment looks like Mad Max Stuff🙀 Cool Video 👍
I've just stumbled onto your video and ran into a problem a few years ago with my old CDJ-800. I removed the dust and wiped it with the wrong kind of wipe (Lysol Citrus type) and now the edge of the plastic platter has reacted to it in a way that even years later I can't clean it again. A thin layer of the plastic turned into a soft goo like sticky tar and it picks up lint now. I've tried letting it sit for a long time to see if it would dry and harden up, but it seems to have chemically reacted to the plastic, but only on the outer rim of the platter where the indentations are for nudging. I've considered covering that area with painters tape or something since it's so tacky I can't really enjoy using it and it leaves black marks on my hands. I'm guessing the only option would be to replace the platter with a used one and avoid that type of cleaning wipe.
I know that I will never need this tutorial in my life, but for some reason, I find this video satisfying)
Have you looked into "board wash" @ your favorite electronics supply. Could save you the wash and rinse with so much water (iso. has high water content), and it is designed for safely washing boards and components.
Thanks for the video man i appreciate it
More cdj repair video’s please, they’re so entertaining
bruh its so satisfying to watch
I took two CDJ-900NXS and a Xone:92 mixer to Spain from California in a pelican air case (no charge for weight or size) as a checked back through 4 airports and there and back. No issues.
Cleaning/Restoring Videos are way to satisfying
Christian, how do you clean the LCD screen? Thanks! I watch your video a bunch
I have been building custom guitars since the 1980s. When we began using CNC machines, the wood dust was just killing em.... What worked great was to run a low pressure (25 - 35psi) regulated filtered through desiccant air line from the shops air compressor .. basically it was like a little clear hose like paramedics use with a oxygen mask.. Dust simply can NOT enter due to being slightly pressurized, or more like, dust cant swim up stream... I'm sure you would have to drill a small hole to feed the air... Same goes for your rack... You can run K&N off road filters in front of the rack fans, but also push compressed air into each rack unit ... The dust in the wood mill might not be micro rocks, but it's like peas & carrots with static, LOL!... And honestly, I don't know how anyone can even think of being at that place without a compressor to blow your face , your hair, hat & clothes, 8 track tapes, etc. Oh, and you can charge money to put the hose in your shoes , omg it feels good, LOL!.. Hope this
Very interesting, great upload!
Amazing video!
Looks absolutely dope with all the sand
Hey I'm 18, from New Zealand and im really into lighting. I was wondering if there were any free lighting software's where I can learn abit about how desks work (like MA on pc)
Awesome video man!
hi chris, you think is it worth or ok to clean or sprayed using contact cleaner (or else) the PlayCue and Headphone Cue buttons before deciding to replace it? sometimes those are stuck.
second thing is: My DJM Right channel signal on master are leaked all across 4 channels. all LEDs (meters, cues, color fx) are blinked when the balance set to center. But it’s normal when its set all the way left.
need your technical advise 🙏🏻
This was honestly very interesting
Nicely done
So - since you've done this once, will you do it again?
Do you think you charged enough for it to be worth the time?
Hey,
Can you please tell me what Peli Cases are you using for the 2000 nexus? I simply hate the normal flightcases (plus they are not waterproof).
I just need the model to see if I can source it where I am.
thanks a bunch
Oh look who decided to upload
I know your probably joking but it can be hard to juggle ones job or jobs, video/editing and most important family and maintain a steady upload to youtube.
Yea no means of bashing. I respect the time christian puts on each video for quality purpose. Much love
Great job Christian you are a very intelligent guy!
The smiling face on the display is the cutest. Fave moment, tbh.
holy shit! I always wondered if there is a place you can get these things serviced for you, I hate taking things apart like that.
awesome video man!!
$40 for two PLASTIC buttons?!
lol, no shit. you gotta be some kind obsessive nutbar to pay that. I'm assuming hes pulling prices from pioneer directly which are ludicrously high. They quoted me $40 for a $5 relay and i needed 14 of them...
Well it's a little difficult to get the injection molded plastic parts from anywhere other than pioneer lol. I get all my tact switches directly from electronics component suppliers/wholesalers.
Cheapest they are on ebay is about $40
@@kryzkat8762 it costs Pioneer less than $1 to produce those buttons.
Two mechanical switches, two LEDs, an LED microcontroller, wiring, and of course Pioneer tax
Interesting, I learned a lot. Sweet video👍
insane result!
Are the platters expensive to replace on this unit or the sz2?
My man is back
Awesome!
Awsome video tnx man
Nice work dude 👌🏻
Ive done this with cdj 1000 mk3s before! :) Great vid!
You're cool! I'm not sure if i do that the cdj working again or maybe more broken 😅
good video the 2000 nexus have i self, thank for the nice video!
Very good video!!!
How did you clean the dust trapped inside the LCD screen?
AWESOME video!!
so good... thanks!
Detailing DJ gear i like it.
I really love these CDJ repair videos of yours! I would really love to one day acquire a CDJ setup but buying it is way too expensive. I’m relatively handy with electronics though and buying broken ones and repairing them seems like a great option!
I did that with some “for parts” units on eBay. Really easy to fix usually
Sounds great! Got any good resources for CDJ/DJM repair? Any good sites/forums/youtube channels? aside from this one of course :)
Honestly I’d say just look into general electronics repair. Louis rossmann on UA-cam is where I learned to solder and troubleshoot electronics.
All right thanks man!
Rent them with the extra insurance next time. Great vid! Glad your back
is there no outdoor case for them?
That was dope!
Antistatic Foam cleaner is good for electronics. It completely evaporated and doesn’t turn to water to drip into crevices that might damage circuitry
0:26 HEART ATTACK!!!
what kind of dust were you talking about in the beginning?
The music at 2:50 is
Some Air (slct Remix) - Gloria tells
Ironic i would say :D
Haha somehow I don't think i'd want to be renting mine out to an event like burning man. I have done a few day festivals but nothing in that sort of environment.
Since you seem to be really experienced with servicing these, I wonder if you might know how to fix a loose jog wheel tensioner? One I can feel is nice and clicking like original and it works just fine, the other I can barely feel the clicks in the adjustment and try and set it to tight then it loosens when I start turning the jog wheel.
Eyyyy you're back
4:19 I didn’t learn that in 7th grade science class
that's basic pH science
Hey Christian, any advice on repairing a cdj2000nxs2.
I bought one secondhand, which seemed to be in perfect condition. But when using it at home, I found out that the cdj doesn’t react when pressing the “back”button (upper right side) so I’m kinda dissapointed...
At the moment, I’m disassembling the cdj, and at first sight, I see some dried up liquid-stains on some boards.
Could cleaning the dried up liquid-stains result in a fixed cdj? Or do you think the liquid really damaged the cdj?
which spray are you using for pcb parts?
@2:53. Hahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dude, you're hilarious! I hate to say it, but I'd have been tempted to just round file them all. What a mess!!!
Best to vacuum it first, the can air will blow more dust into places it couldn't normally get into.
Slinky Trips lol, so youd prefer to risk vacuuming a screw or something important? Whenever you decide to use the vacuum method, let me know how it goes.
@@dougharper1492 you know things that go into a vacuum cleaner aren't gone forever, right?
@@steelbluesleepR so have you made you youtube vacuum cdjs video yet? Let me know how that goes
@@dougharper1492 no, but my job is to clean and maintain high end camera equipment. I use a small vacuum quite often.
@Jonathan Prasad Just about to write the same thing.
Hello, how are you? How do I clean the video cable from the LCD display of the CDJ 2000 Nexus? The display sometimes shows up dots getting dark. I hate you if you can help me.
It's so satisfying to watch something really dusty get cleaned, but at the same time, I hate cleaning.
I would literally have to record bag and number part piece at a time I am terrible with taking things apart I always have screws left over
How did you clean them outside?
Love the video bro can u please show me how to upgrade software on the CDj 2000 recordbox please
It's on the pioneer site u dumb fuck
Thank you bro
YAY A NEW VIDEO!
0:46 made siri open up and say "hey siri jays"
Cool video! So are the CDJs at most festivals/events always rented from people like yourself? Or do some events buy their own to re-use every year?
Really depends. Most festivals rent from companies/individuals like myself. But some event companies have their own.
you are a mad man, gj
impossible to do i could never remember 120 screws where to place them
Christian Jackson!! What’s up man!!!
