Those of us long time Hetfield fans are no stranger to the fact that one of his favorite genres to listen to is old, real country. And truth be known, most real metal fans from generations past are also fans of old country music. Long before it became "pop country".

+Jayhoyt32 Hell yeah. Guys like Waylon, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee was where it all started. Their music was considered outsider music back then. People are so narrow minded today. It's not the music that matters. It's the attitude behind the music and Waylon was definitely an outlaw.

+Larry Baumgardner I've heard that as well. And I'd really love to know simply because I've always considered myself a true fan and I'd like to think I know as much about Het as anyone else (that he wants fans to know anyway) but the truth about that rumor still eludes me.

+Jayhoyt32 I still listen to Cash. Since Metallica lost it's thrash mojo, I would be on board to hear James do an album in this style. It just fits.

+Jayhoyt32 This is one good ol boy that gives James one more gold star for that one! My only complaint is I can't buy it...... Your dead on Jay, James has always been a huge country music fan. That's because he knows the secrets of music. All music, would be my guess

On the tribute album its lists James as playing each instrument. He literally went into the studio and laid down the tracks himself. Drums, bass, sitar, all of it. An homage no doubt. Waylon is the one who inspired the song "Waste My Hate" while he and James ate lunch in a diner.

Good music is just good music, regardless of it being stuck into different generes, this is a great tribute to Waylon from a great metal artist. I know that Waylon was a lover of all different types of music and I know he had actually met James in person, and he would have loved this.

don't you worry there is definitely another outlaw movement coming it's just in the shadows waiting for all out war on Nashville, it's small scale now but as soon as we starting busting those doors down it will all change. hank 3, rowdy Johnson band, Dallas Moore, Cody jinks, those poor bastards, lonesome wyatt, shooter Jennings, whey Jennings, are all a part of it and that's just scratching at the surface. it's coming and it may be sooner than you think. corporate Nashville will fall to the hands of true musicians who let music take its own form and don't let "genre's" define who they are.

If Waylon Jennings and James Hetfield were friends, I don't see the big problem here.
It's common for people to do covers (especially between friends). You can even buy records such as "Diver Down" by Van Halen that are mostly covers. In "Walk the Line," Johnny Cash gave one of his songs to Roy Orbison.
Do the covers always sound like the original? No. They usually have a spin by the group that's covering them. If you'd rather hear Waylon Jennings doing these songs, no one is stopping you. And no one is forcing you to listen to James Hetfield.

I like either James Hetfield's playing or Dave Mustaine's, but don't measure anyone's musicianship by playing any cover band. In my opinion Mustaine is better than Hetfield nowadays, due to Megadeth's recent albums that are better than Metallica's latest album and songs..
