  • VICE's Red Cards meets one of downhill biking's all-time biggest names, Missy "The Missile" Giove. One of the first women to break out on the mountain biking scene in the 90s, Giove was known for her high-intensity riding style and outspoken personality. Her peddle to the meddle attitude did not always result in the safest rides, however, and Giove suffered several injuries throughout her career, eventually causing her to put down the bike.
With mounting medical bills and few other options for income after her career drew to a close, Giove sought a new form of adrenaline rush by smuggling millions of dollars worth of marijuana across the country. A massive DEA operation brought Giove head to head with law enforcement in 2009, and she faced up to 40 years in jail. Nearly 10 years later, we catch up with the daredevil to learn more about her life of high stakes racing.
    Presented by Ryot.

Back in 1992 living in Vail, CO I was building a ramp coming off Chinawall at the top of Vail Mt.! It was for the downhill Mt. bike portion, a 15 min. downhill! Missy came up there everyday while building it even helping us out! She was pretty cool just BS about bike racing and living at ski resorts, she lived in Durango at the time! Just from the the conversation we had there was no holding back in any part of life for her! Every year she came into town for the WC races she stopped and say hello and see how things were going very polite! I wish her the best for her and her wife for the years to come and hope they win the battle against cancer!

I have a story, believe it or not. Through marriage, I have an uncle (wife's uncle) he is a third generation cop in the LAPD, his only son was an officer and was asked to work narcotics. His father said 'Don't work with people that bite the hand that feeds us all!" The meaning was, narcs impede the commerce involved in LE. He told his son, "Drugs pay for our overtime, our guns, our vests, our six figure salaries." "Why would you want to cockblock our way of life."
Pretty telling huh? Believe the story or not but it's a true story.

    • @halseyknox

I get it...that's the way the money monster works....if you eliminated all the drugs and the addicts, a lot of people living the "so called good life" would be out of a job.....just look at tobacco and alcohol. they are drugs and highly addictive and look at all the problems and health related issues they cause society as a WHOLE. We weren't born with a cigarette in our hand or a can or glass. The entities condition us to do so and that's why they target the young....didn't mean to go on a tangent but money and the greed and power that goes with it is the root of all evil and a lot of good honest people have gotten sucked into that worm hole. I don't hold nothing against Missy except lack of good judgement when life tests you. Cancer sucks!!!!!!

I met missy at snowshoe bike park once. She told my buddy and I about the gnarly off-map trails nearby and said, “idk if you’ll be able to get your girlfriend to go along or not..” because I had mentioned I was still pretty intermediate.. now it feels like an honor to have had that insult delivered to me, haha.
Also, she mentioned her girlfriend who worked there was a MTB EMT, and said you didn’t want to meet her because she was like the angel of death, meaning you only met her if you were really fucked up.
I ended up dislocating my knee riding last year and met her. I told her about that and she was kinda pissed. She said “I’m like the angel of life, I’m saving your ass right now.” And she really did save my ass, haha. Thanks for the help Robin, you’re a badass.

But, for why she began transporting mj. the video left me with the impression, she started trafficking weed after being forced off her bike, out of contest, that led to the loss of sponsors. It was £25000 worth, IF I sold the whole thing as grams. Cops be dammned and fuck off. Overestimating the value by a factor of 80 just to make people think the worst. I've known cops to be busted with three times that and claim it was only worth £5000. This is one of the many reasons why people don't like the police.

So, basically she's saying that she told on everyone else involved so she can get a lesser sentence! It'll come back to haunt her, she'll be lucky if people in her family doesn't start to come up missing! My Cousin got 30 years in Federal Prison for Kingpin and laundering money, which was back in 1990, that was the largest drug bust in the history of MD, they estimated it to be a 20 million dollar a month industry, and he went from the State Prison to Federal Prison in 1994, and he just got out a few months ago, so she definitely told on people! And you know what, the Colombians and New Yorkers come in after the guy's family who snitched on my cousin and everyone else, they had his family and the witness protection program and had to move them five times because they kept being found, which it's only a matter of time before they get to him and kill him or people in his family! So, he did about 27 years on a 30 year sentence, and that's the kind of time you get when you don't snitch!
