Nice Coptic Bind. Couple things to notice. 1) Grain direction. I noticed you folding the papers perpendicular to the spine. This can cause the spine to bow out in the center. You can see this at around the 21:51 mark of the video, where the head and tail of the book are thinner than the center. Also at the 22:20 mark when you opened the pages a bit, you can see the corners of the pages bending in toward each other - This is a result of the grain direction going against the spine. 2) Stitching. At around the same time frame mentioned above (21:51), you can see on the left hand side of the spine that it is tighter than the remainder of the book. This can also cause the bowing effect in the spine. Coptic stitches do need to be tight, but not synched down so as to squeeze the papers together. This can cause the spine to warp inwardly after repeated opening of the book, and eventually will cause pages to start to tear around the stitching. Remember that boards have a grain direction as well. They should be lengthwise to the spine. Generally speaking, when applying paper to the boards, it may help to ever so slightly wet the board with a bit of water. (just a slight sponge swipe). This will help the PVA to adhere to the board deep within the fibers and can correct some front and back bowing. While its still wet from adding the paper, it's usually a good idea to press the board between some weights so as to help even out the convex bowing. Gluing down the papers to the boards - Solid! Hole spacing for the stitching - Solid! Linen Threads - Solid! And I believe you were using a binding specific PVA as well - Awesome. Great Video. I know it is not a tutorial, but could very easily serve as one!!
Most supplies seen in this video are from Hiromi Paper in Los Angeles! If you have any questions, ask away! (This video is not meant to be instructional but I hope it sends some peace / calm your way)
Im trying to remember the steps to make it but im just so mesmerized by this calm video that I just end up staring at my screen taking in this peace! Such an amazing video!
I know that a lot of people have complained about the music in your videos. But you’ve honestly turned me on to so many musicians I now love. If this is no longer a thing, can you please drop what you’ve been listening to on Insta or something? I really love everything you’ve shown me so far. Thanks.
I once made a sketchbook like this. Took me around an hour to get a booklet with 40 openings, (80 useable pages) because prepping the paper with the holes was tedious and took a while....
@@Death-Dott I've made several books like this, and a pro tip is to not use a sewing needle in leu of an awl. The first one I made must've taken at least 6 hours, but to be fair and honest, I was prepping two sets of 50 sheets (100 usable pages) so that my mom and I could each make one, then during the actual making had to baby her a little bit. also, here's why you shouldn't use a sewing needle (TW injury): the sewing needle got stuck between two seperate layers of my skin while I was home alone, prepping the pages. It took me a while to get it out.
@@nyandoesthings I don't know how you managed that, but at I at least made premade holes. Which means I couldn't have gotten injured this way. Prepping the holes is probably one of the best things I could've done, according to your comment. My hands are stronger than I always think and I could've poked myself severely and probably have bloodshed.
I've actually made a sketchbook like this (nowhere near as neatly binded and aesthetically pleasing as yours), and considering how long it took me to make it, I can't imagine how long it took you to film the process. Props to you! This video is so artistically pleasing and just relaxing to watch, love it
Your video make my day Before a few hours i was surrendered about drawing because in my country they don't sell a sketchbook like how i want so it's make me really sad but after watching this video i decided to make my own skitchbook Thank you sooooooo muchh ❤❤❤❤
your videos are what first inspired me to try bookbinding and every time you upload one of these videos, it inspires me all over again. thank you so much hon
absolutely beautiful, beginning to end, amazingly soothing! you're crazy talented. can i please make a suggestion though? it would be so satisfying if you spent a bit more time at the end flipping through the pages & showing off the finished books!
What I love the most apart from the skills and talent is the love you put in every detail, it just projects out of the screen thank you very much for this video.
Always absolutely beautiful and skillfully done. Love the camera work, the audio, the books. You are very inspirational. You got me to order from choosing keeping and I’m loving every item I bought.
So happy to see another Sketchbook making video from you. I watched a previous one by you and I thought I would have a go myself and have been making my own sketch books for a while now. It's actually a really lovely thing to do and a chilled way to spend an afternoon/weekend.There are so mant lovely handmade papers available now to put in a sletchbook and a dazzling range of decorative papers for the covers Though I do often make my own decorative papers for the covers.I love making sketchboks so much that I deceiced I would stop buying ready made ones. I bought all the tools and quipment that you use as well and am so glad I made the investment. It's quite a relaxing thing to do and I always have a sense I'm crafting from history if you know what I mean and I love that I can create something unique that has a purpose too. So thank you for the inspiration of your wondrful videos, because I have discovered something new and creative that I've come to really love. (Matt) P.S I will check out the Hiromi Paper store online.
I have been making my own sketchbooks for quite some time now ever since finding your brillaint videos, and I have saved so much money,I realised it was actually cheaper in the long run to get the materials and tools to make my own than for what it cost me for some brands of ready made hardbacked sketchbooks. It means I can use my favourite papers as the pages. But I also love using handmade and recycled papers too.Etsy is a good place to look for small artisan paper makers. I tend to make A3 sized sketchbooks,A5 and postcard sized. It's actually really lovely thing to do, and I know I will never go back to buying ready made sketchbooks. My first few sketchbooks were a bit rough looking, but as I've made more I have got better at it and I love how they look when completed. I learned paper marbling too so I can make papers for the covers of my sketchbooks.Give it a go you won't regret it, I also make them as gifts for artist friends too. (matt)
Very peaceful and calm video. Btw, I actually handmade a sketchbook (for the first time ever) from your last bookbinding video. I really loved the final look these sketchbooks give. ❤❤❤
Now I see why my sketchbooks ended up sorta loosey-goosey. I was not pulling hard enough! And I don't think I waxed my thread enough either. So relaxing to watch!
Encantada sobremanera con tu canal. Te felicito por todo lo que haces tan hermoso y muy especial. Has ganado una nueva admiradora y suscriptora. Abracitos de colores desde Colombia!!! 🤗🤗🤗🇨🇴
i did bookbinding in high school, but when it came to sewing in the pages I did 5 (10) at a time. The book had to have a minimum of 200 pages and i just didn't see myself having the patience to sew in 100 double pages. Because of the glue we used the book became a bit crunchy after a while. If i were to attempt it again i would need to do it with other people at scheduled times to keep motivated.
I was fortunate that I had a book arts course at my community College. The patience to properly make a sleek and proper looking book is amazing. This video makes me want to pick it up again!
your channel is my go-to before i go to sleep! ♡ so therapeutic. this was filmed very well and i bet the whole filming process took you a long time ;----; thank you and im rooting for u always hehe!
Hello! I know tour video is from a year ago but I started making a book that's is a three hole book at a camp I went to that I didn't get to finish. It's using the same three hole book that you made in this video but didn't show sewing. If you could make a video showing how you sewed the three holed book together that would be amazing!
I've been binging all your videos haha. Do you have a shop? I would totally buy prints and crafts from you. I LOVE your channel. It's so peaceful and productive
By glueing the thread along the spine, are you still able to open it flat? I'm not fully sure how coptic binding works so I thought that by glueing it you would remove it's "movability", or what-not. Does it still open flat? Since you didn't open it up all the way at the end I was left with the doubt
Hey, I have a question. When you wax the thread, where did you get the wax, and how did you not get burned? Was is perfectly under your finger or are you actually getting burned? 😅
Lowkey you're my comfort youtuber
