Listening, that mouthpiece certainly does sounds like a great orchestral piece. I was using my 3B for both my Bb and C last year and never quite had the sound I wanted on my C. As far as Monette goes, I’ve been to the shop. I certainly feel that the quality is really high and if you get the right setup can be a perfect fit, but I still haven’t bought one because of the price. It’s hard to swallow a $100 mouthpiece purchase these days, let alone 3 times that.

I recently started watching these videos.
I find them refreshing because they contain:
    - reviews of competitor products that include compliments (not just bashing) and what seem to be honest and detailed assessments of each.
    - detailed scientific analysis of (again) competitor products so that we can see the difference in specs and are not instead listening to vague and misleading "mine is better cuz you hear how theirs closed up for me (when I purposely tightened up when I played theirs)", etc.
    - inside look at how AND why Harrelson products are manufactured; I'm not sure I've seen this much behind-the-scenes "sharing" before.
And I gotta say... that detailed explanation of specifically how to distinguish a real communication from Harrelson and a fake one... gold medal. As with everything else I've seen so far in these videos... this is extremely clear and concise. Kudos.

I really appreciate your honesty when you comment on Monettes pricing. You're spot on. It does feel like price gouging. And there were so many good mouthpiece makers that can produce a similar piece. I bought a B6s1, which is similar to a 3C. The promise of better intonation was what attracted me. I ended up reselling it. That was almost a year ago. I'm using a lotus 1xl now.

Wow would I love to win that mouthpiece! I've been the only trumpet player in my ensemble for about a year and had a Stork LTV4 because of that reason. But, I recently auditioned, and got accepted to, a much better (and much bigger) wind ensemble that I'm super excited to play in. I could really use a big and brilliant mouthpiece for that group. When you mentioned that this would be great for solos I knew this would be an awesome mouthpiece for the application that I need it for since I already have several solos lined up. Thank you so much for doing this giveaway!!

I like the boldness of the mouthpiece! I’ve used Monette mouthpiece before and it didn’t fit for me. Unfortunately when I bought one, I couldn’t return it so I sold it but felt like it was overpriced especially being that I couldn’t try one to find the perfect size first. Honestly my 5MM is the way to go and is the only mouthpiece, outside of my Bach 1C, that I have consistently played for years. Hope this goes to a good home where someone can get the perfect use out of it!

Monette is a beautiful gold mouthpiece .I paid $300
For a new one. Maybe it’s my skill level ,but my Bach Artisran 1C works just as well, but I can’t return it.I’ve had a double lung transplant and need a horn that takes less wind to play . I’d love a more efficient horn. The Specrstone is the way to go.That horn you’re playing sounds great

I love what you do and a new instrument would be great for me going into my second year of high school and I'd remember it and cherish it like no other. I apologize for sounding desperate but it would be really cool and even if I don't get picked I still appreciate what your doing for your community

Fantastic, I was actually just looking at monette mouthpieces. I completely agree that the mouthpiece would be ideal for an orchestral setting. The sound was quite big and robust and the notes were full across all registers. I could definitely see myself filling up a hall with that mouthpiece. This is awesome! Having a clear honest review of trumpets & mouthpieces of equipment that cost an arm and a leg and see if it's something that one would really want is awesome. I personally play on a Bach 2C and I'm not really happy with it. I use to play on a Yamaha 8335G and then got gifted a 8345R and I felt the trumpet was way better than my personal 8335G, but I've been playing on this equipment since high school. I can't afford the arm and a leg price of high end and awesome equipment so it would be really cool to win a giveaway like this of some really awesome gear. Win or lose, I still think the information you're putting out is top notch and really informative. Thank you for giving the trumpet community an awesome opportunity!

Videos like this are super helpful for intermediate to advanced trumpet players like me that are looking to enhance their playing with the right equipment. I live in Hawaii and I've found that we don't have many stores that carry these items and our isolation makes it harder to attend conventions where I'd be able to try different set-ups. As a music education major, I really want to find a set-up that works for me and will help me to grow as a musician throughout college. I've been looking to invest in some quality equipment, but I'm hesitant to make such a large purchase without having tried these items out before. This channel helps me to feel more knowledgeable and confident in the purchases I make and excited to progress as a trumpet player. Thanks for the video and for this opportunity!

A couple years ago I posted on a FB Trumpet page. I asked, what will make the biggest difference in playability for my Yamaha Xeno RGS. Jason commented about the VGR and shortly after my machinist father in law and I installed it on my horn. This is the single best equipment change I have ever made. Now that I know the difference in feel between inserts, I am enjoying efficiency and tone color that I've only hoped for in my 30 plus years of trumpet playing/teaching. Now please give me the mouthpiece and the trumpet. TIA :)

One quick note, the gold-on-gold combination with the Monette and the Summit looked fantastic! I also always enjoy the flexibility show-cases you play during transitions.

Fat sound on that mouthpiece. And im glad that you're mentioning how inflated these prices are nowadays. I got a new mpc recently and had to pay about 30% more than I've had to in the past for the same piece. Also winning a new trumpet would be super cool! Every time find something new, specially about new mouthpieces.
Monette is seems to be some favourite within warm, soft sound and easy playing in all registers.
Now have original GR 66C-T and seems it good for me.
Thanks for the tube channel and all the best forward.

Definitely a good sound. It seemed to respond more slowly on the B flat than on the C, but produced very nearly the same tone quality. I would imagine most of that similarity is you as a player. The slower response could be because you just came off the C, as it improved as you played and adjusted. Realistic assessment and complimenting mouthpieces and trumpets for their good qualities while explaining logic and reason for other/better options is always refreshing.

I started watching harrelson skeptical but when I watched, listened, and bought some products I became a harrelson geak. I love the trumpets and mouthpieces and everything harrelson stands for. I love all the science and evidence to back up harrelson and that’s why I love and can trust harrelson. I bought a monette unity mouthpiece looking for the perfect in between of a Bach 3c and a lead mouthpiece but was a little disappointed to find out that it really wasn’t the one. But with time it got better and way more comfortable and started playing and sounding a lot better. Do I regret the choice? Somewhat, I feel like I bought into something with a magic trick attached but not actually knowing how to do it but with time I learned. But now looking into and at Harrelson trumpets I wanna save and invest for a spectratone mouthpiece. Keep it up and everything that you do. 👍

They are beautiful MP's but realized that the rim on both are just too flat for me and not very comfortable because i have small lips. I have them stored in a Monette double MP case. More money down the tube.

  • @MrRezillo

Thanks for a great revue, Mr. Harrelson. I was very curious about the Monette. I'd only shell out for a $350 mouthpiece if it gave me a fantastic improvement in my playing (but common sense and experience tells me that a fantastic improvement will only come with hours, days, amd months of hard work.
I'm the opposite of a mouthpiece junky; you could call me mouthpiece phobic. I've been playing the same piece (a custom Curry) for about 12 years, and nothing else. I don't know squat about backbores, throat sizes, rum diameters, etc. I suppose I should bite the bullet andstart looking for a better piece. So, big thanks for this vid.

    • @harrelsontrumpets
      @harrelsontrumpets  9 місяців тому

Monette makes most of their money selling mouthpieces that sit on shelves or in drawers. While most Monette customers know this is true from experience, the average player just trying their mouthpieces doesn't see the reality until they've spent over $1k. With this said, Monette makes great mouthpieces, but they count on you searching for that magic bullet rather than expending the effort to help you find it more economically. This is why there are "brand new, pre-owned" Monette mouthpieces for sale everywhere, every day of the week.

Love your videos. I'm back on the trumpet after 40 years and sadly playing with same lip pressure and feeling the same upper lip irritation after about an hour, that I felt 40 years ago. Can't teach an old dog new tricks? Really working on raising the mouthpiece to cover more of my upper lip, looking at videos, etc. Purchased a used Yamaha 4335G and it came with a Bach 7C. My first comment disappeared - second time watching this video - always helpful and informative. Unfortunately, the Monette mouthpiece would not fit my old Getzen, Super Deluxe Cornet (vintage 1957? with a sticky 2nd valve) Good enough for now, as I'm still on lip slurs and simple scales and still not sure about the "right Mouthpiece" - on a Cornet Bach 3C now. I believe I used a Bach 10 1/2C when I was playing trumpet 50ish years ago - so will still be searching. Looking forward to improving enough to deserve buying a Harrelson - signed up for Trumpet Momentum 6 July and sent assessment in 8 july - looking forward to assessment feedback - thanks for all your help - Stan

In a fan of Monette mouthpieces, to the point that my 5MM educator kit is sized in Monette. The Monette sizing chart is more comprehensive then most of the other manufacturers (except really Schilke). It is cost prohibitive, I'll agree. I'm saving up for the MFVI Unity, at the moment. I would love to have your Muse horn with the MFVI as an integral/screw option.

Gotta say, this review is so informative, especially cause I’ve been in the market to try a Monette, I will be trying a friend’s Bb Monette mouthpiece, and it’d be nice to have one for the sake of knowing how a Monette feels. What I already knew is that they had larger throats in general, shorter overall, and were pricy as heck, and after this review, I feel like I’d appreciate that mouthpiece cause I can play pretty softly on harder-attack mouthpieces, but I’m almost hesitant to enter the giveaway since a C-trumpet Monette sounds like almost too short. And the trumpet giveaway sounds even more intriguing, but if some reason you choose me, I’ll take good care of that mouthpiece

I really appreciate the honest review. I thought it was just me that felt that the prices were not appropriate for the actual product. For alternative small shops, who do you recommend (other than yourself of course) to contact about getting a mouthpiece made?

I’ve been thinking about buying a monette for some time now but I just can’t get over the price, being a college student. I’ve been using a modified Bach 1C for both my Bb and my C and it works alright. I’m not sure if this mouthpiece would be right for me or not but hey, I’ll take what I can get when I can get it. Thanks for the review and the content you put out, it has helped me a lot as a player.

I have been playing a lot of C Trumpet repertoire including the Chaynes trumpet concerto and based on the demonstrations from your video, I think this mouthpiece might suit me rather well. Hi, I'm from Italy. I've been studying trumpet since I was 6 years old. I have tried several mouthpieces, now I have a standard Bach 3c but I am going to change it because I start to get tight. as a trumpet I have a Bach Stradivarius ml 37 and a stomvi Eb / D.
In my opinion, the monette mouthpieces are the best on the market for the body of the sound. However, your modular mouthpieces are just as interesting.
I would be curious to try one of your trumpets or one of your modular mouthpieces but in Italy there are no Harrelsons trumpets .

Great review. It's hard to find the right mouthpiece when living in semi remote countries. You literally have to purchase and hope. Then it takes a long while to on-sell them. What are your thoughts on Monette throat sizes? That's seems to be their angle and I feel that effects stamina big time for me on the gig.

I played a used Monette mouthpiece a long time ago for a few months. I don’t think my technique was anywhere near efficient enough to tell how good/bad of a fit it actually was though. I’ve come a long way since then, but, like you addressed, the price (and also their return policy) have stopped me from checking them out again. On that note, out of curiosity, do you have some sort of quantifiable idea of how to tell when a player is ready in their journey to check out some nicer equipment?

Quite a unique mouth piece, the tone quality alone is impressive. I don’t think it would sound nice in a marching or jazz however would sound perfect in orchestral environment. Overall from ear sounds great and tone quality and control is perfect. The price is quite high for a mouth piece. But i can see it used in certain situations, this is like a swap put mouth piece geared towards one purpose. Overall still a very good mouth piece.

Ironically I’ve been using my old Bach 3C for classical since I was going through some things, and it doesn’t even fit into my shank anymore. Well, definitely not the MP for me, I'd say. Sounded great, even on the Bb, but I'm playing on something currently that's a little more towards the commercial side, and does well at a number of things...really most everything but hardcore lead playing, where I'd want something just a little more zingy. But there's a lot of core in this sound.

All these years I play on a basic 7C just when I started. I tried other mouth pieces like Bach 3C but go back to what I’m used to. $350 mouthpieces sound alluring but imagine buying one and it doesn’t live to expectations? Monette plays on marketing psychology where it’s enticing to buy something super expensive believing it’ll perform like a high performance sports car.
