    Huge thanks Jason. I cannot overstate how pleasant it was hearing your voice, your vocabulary and your tremendously practical and smart overviews and tips. I made copious notes listening to you and others, 12 pages in all. I did that to set up my recently acquired Sony a6700. That's what I do, I go through a menu and set out its details in a multicolumn table. Many thanks. I've subscribed.

    This was the video I've been looking for, for the a6700. Had this camera for 7 months now and haven't touched it. Other videos i came across just weren't touching up on the small stuff, talking way too fast, or just weren't going into detail about the little things I didn't know about Sony cameras. Thanks again!

    Jason, thank you so much for making your videos. When I bought my ZV-E10 I watched your video on the menu system, and now that I’m buying the 6700 I am re-watching the new menu system. I greatly appreciate the time you spend to systematically step through all the settings. Thank you. Sony should be paying you for these!!!

      It's good to see a ton of option, but it would be ccol to have some real word examples too. I keep hearing the word "basic" and it takes 40 minutes to explain. lol These could easily be 5 minute videos for each function. When I get mine I'm just gonna take it out, with the manual, and give everything a go and see what works.

      I didn't mean that to sound so negative. This is actually a very cool video. I probably should have said this is a super detailed and instructional video, and Sony's menu system is really deep. You really did a great job with this video and I'm sorry I didn't point that out in my previous post. And thanks for adding the chapters. On my favorites list now.@@Jason_Hermann

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  10 місяців тому +1

      @@mitchphotoflix No worries at all, and you were right I should have added the navigation... The reason I didn't if you are curious is because the concepts build off one another and if you skip ahead stuff might not make sense depending. Then I get questions that really were covered in the beginning for example, so I was trying to limit that. In any event this type of video should really have chapters so if you come back it's easier to find something you may have forgotten etc... All the best and thanks again d for the very kind words :)

    Thanks for this video - much clearer and more complete than anything I've seen. It's great that you include what camera button you're pressing - sometimes hard to figure that out from others' videos. Question: is there a way to change the focus area when using Clear Image Zoom, or to set up different focus areas for CIZ? It always seems to default to wide whenever I switch CIZ on - especially birds on a salt marsh, where the marsh grass in the background is higher contrast than the subject.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  7 місяців тому

      When in clear image zoom mode you are very limited due to the amount of calculations the camera is making all at the same time.

    Hi
    Thank you for the video
    What is the purpose of the AF on button on the camera?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  9 місяців тому

      Hello and great question!
      You can use the AF-ON button to adjust the focus without pressing the shutter button halfway down ([AF On] function) in the following cases:
      When you want to focus at a specific shooting distance predicting the position of the subject,
      When you want to focus and release the shutter separately.
      When shooting a movie, you can perform auto-focusing while holding down the AF-ON button even in the manual focusing mode.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  10 місяців тому +1

      There are almost to many options it seams like I agree, but the camera works so good with default settings you do not need to worry so much. It's nice to know that you can dial the settings in for specific use cases though if you ever need to. For example if doing wildlife with small birds, vs taking portraits of your kid, you would want different settings applied ;) Subject detection in particular, but possible the focus mode and drive mode as well... All the best, Jay

    Hi, thanks for for your review, those info is useful for me, and still, can you test the video follow focus perfomance when connect to a external hdmi monitor, cause in sony before model, the performance of video follow focus will drastically drop when connecting to a external monitor.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  10 місяців тому

      I did not notice any difference in performance when hooked up to the HDMI, but I only tested in my studio with that set-up. Older cameras would lose Eye AF and stuff like that when plugged into HDMI, is that what you are thinking about?

    When you have a registered face, will the camera in c-af tracking mode prioritize that face? Thinking when recording my son playing soccer, whether that alone is good or if i should rather stick to tracking af and select him manually?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  4 місяці тому +1

      I would try both methods and see what works best. I never actually used facial priority in a sports environment myself as I just prefer tracking the subject with a limited AF area of my choosing depending on the scene. It's more of a traditional method, but I would like to try the face priority method at some point... I feel like it would be better for slower speed where it's like a group of people standing around sort of thing, but again I need to test that out in the real world sports environment to know for sure. If you do try it, please report back if you don't mind...

    What setting is good on the a6700 for UA-cam unboxing videos? I want me and the product not to be blurry. Also is the auto focus good when showing the product and then going back to my face? Thanks

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  6 місяців тому

      Easier said than done if you want you and the product to be in focus at the same time. You will need to move back from the camera and stop the lens dow to about f/5.6 to f/8 I would say. If your face is in the scene the camera by default will stay locked on that unless you cover it. You can turn off facial recognition and then the camera will focus on whatever is closest in the given focus area you have selected.

    Hi Jason, thanks for this, it’s helping me a lot! I have a question if I may. Just got my A6700 and it’s my first Sony, I just can’t seem to make the AF works well on wide area mode. The situation is filiming real estate, I need a continuous moving take, and I need it to be in focus most of the time when I’m turning the camera from one side to the other, but it gets really lost and most of the shot ends up out of focus. And don’t know what to do anymore since I tested different speeds for focus shit and transition.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  8 місяців тому +1

      Hey there and thanks for the kind words :) By your question it sounds like you are walking around the house and letting the camera focus on whatever it wants using wide area? That is not the way to go for real estate! You really want to rain that focus area in to a smaller zone or possible even manual. The camera by default is going to focus on whatever is closest to the camera, unless it sees a face and you have facial recognition ON. So knowing that is very important when it comes to real estate photography in particular. I would suggest using center focus area to help limit what the camera focus's on based on what you are aiming at in the center area. I think that will help you out a lot and also slowing the focus transition speed, and sensitivity down a bit may help...

      @@giancarlocipolla4254 Anytime and it takes a lot of practice also.. I've heard a lot of real estate photographers shoot at f/8-f/11 which does help limit the depth of field play as the focus changes. Downside to the higher f-stop is the ISO will need to be higher which is why you want all the lights on in the house and blinds open for sure 👍 It depends on what you are doing though, because I would want to highlight some details in a house with some depth using a lens at a lower f-stop of f/1.8 for example. A feature detail b-roll type of clip is what I am thinking.

    Hi Jason, I heard the shutter release sound when you took some shots in your lab so I wonder did you use mechanical shutter type? So far I could not find the way of how to enable the shutter release sound when using Electronic shutter type. Any thoughts and thank you for your helpful info!

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  10 місяців тому +1

      I always use mechanical shutter in photography mode unless I need the camera to be silent for some reason or in extremely bright conditions where the max mechanical shutter is not enough. I don't think you can have it make a shutter sound with electronic shutter enabled. I can't find anything in the manual saying you can do that. You can change the silent mode settings though, which might do what you want? helpguide.sony.net/ilc/2320/v1/en/contents/0414D_silent_mode_setting.html?search=shutter%20sound

      @@Jason_Hermann Thank you for your response and I agree that we cannot have a shutter sound when electronic shutter (ES) is enable on A6700. From my view of having the ES is to minimize the impact of shooting environment, to let the image processor's horse power to decide the frame rate and to reduce mechanical shutter wear-out. I wish the camera has an option to enable/disable a shutter sound allowing people know whether a photo was taken or not as desired.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  2 місяці тому

      Yeah that is not how the camera works unfortunately. You can set something up where you will be standing so the camera is pre-focused correctly, or you can record 4k video and snag a screen shot for a selfie portrait really quick which I find the easiest way, if I don'[t need a super high resolution photo file. Lastly you can ask somebody to take the shot for you...

    Hi Jason, That was a great review. I have just purchased an A6700. Is it possible in Video Mode to Start/Stop continous Auto Focus, I'm a hybrid wildlife photographer and don't want the AF to be continously focusing while I'm framing my shot, especially for birds in flight. I hope this is possible as I can't find it in custom settings

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  4 місяці тому

      Hello Martin, That is a great question and yes for sure there is a way to do that by using Focus Hold... You can custom program that to a button, but it should be the button on the lens by default if your lens has a button.

      @@martineldridge1319 Hey Martin, You can program a custom button to AF/MF Selector Toggle and it will do what exactly what you are asking.. MENU → (Setup) → [Operation Customize] → [Custom Key/Dial Set.] or [Custom Key/Dial Set.] → desired button → [AF/MF Selector Hold] or [AF/MF Selector Toggle]. The Focus hold button is sort of a toggle for turning AF/MF on and off. Alternatively you can use the AF/MF switch on the lens if you want to leave it off for a while and don'e want to hold the button down.

    I am undecided, this camera is at the same price as the Sony a7iii and a7c, I don't know if the technological leap in focus and 10-bit video is enough to give up a full frame censor. What do you think?

    @32:00 you say, AF-S is good to focus on something and then reframe. I guess you mean AF-C (!), because AF-S wouldnt refocus if you reframe. And you need to refocus!

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  7 місяців тому

      Focusing on something and then reframing in AF-S, means the focus does not change during the re-framing part. If you are in AF-C it will focus the whole time you are moving the camera around. Af-S used to be super handy before we had facial recognition, because I would often focus on a subjects eye, then reframe the shot for a better composition. This is what we had to do back int he day, but things are much easier now.👍

    Anybody here experiencing a slight dead-zone in half press of the shutter button? Even in the beginning part of this video ( 6:43 ), I see Jason is having to half-press the shutter button more than once in order to engage it. This is absolutely something which one can get used to pretty fast, but becomes a slight irritation when switching cameras. (A7iv in my case)
    Can someone confirm this? Is this just button design? or do I have a faulty piece?
