- This is the orchestral version of Vaughan Williams' "Serenade to Music", played by the Northern Sinfonia of England, conducted by Richard Hickox. The violinist is Bradley Creswick.
The wonderfully atmospheric paintings are by the English, Victorian era, artist John Atkinson Grimshaw.
Rachmaninov attended the premier of this work and was moved to tears.
Not long before, my mother saw him in concert in Idaho, brought her to tears, and not long after, found that he was dying and was without money...
Interesting. The past two years I have ben falling in love with English Symphonic Music (Vaughan Williams, first and foremost), and Rachmaninov (who I have ignored in the past). I turn to them almost every day.
@@charlespeterson3798 AHH, SO BRITISH.
I recall long ago as a young music student at Princeton University and Westminster Choir College, discovering RVW. It was so incredible and magical. Like the Oxford Elegy, I wandered through the campuses, dreaming, singing with the men and boys at Trinity Parish, the great University Chapel, and me - a lowly boy from Kentucky horse farms of the blue grass. Studying with the likes of Dr. Eric Routley, Jim Litton, Sir John Guest and Sir David Willcocks among others. I was also the principal viola of the University Orchestra. All this I experienced in one semester because I was too poor to stay or ashamed of my poverty to speak up. And yet I recall so much in every detail; slate sidewalks, black squirrels, cold rainy days and the golden red leaves of the fall. I was in a paradise but had to return to a lowly earth back in Kentucky.
I spent two of the best years of my life in Kentucky, Ft. Knox area. Seen from the eyes of an outsider, the beauty of Kentucky's landscapes and the kindness of the people there rival anywhere else I've ever been. I remember driving near the Ohio river in the spring and seeing meadows full of tiger lilies. Kentucky will always have a special place in my heart.
I think you've been enriched by your experience despite having to cut it short. I'm sure you're a more empathetic and enlightened soul, as shown by your most excellent taste in music.
You sir are a high class Viola musician. I think. 75 years old man from Martinsburg West Virginia. Live in Honolulu now. Listen to Hawaii Public Radio. HPR 🍀🌺🙏🤙
@@katbrowne-q8g Bless and thank you!
A peaceful interlude to an insane world. There is beauty, and it is the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams.
I love the warm glow of shop lights in contrast with dark rainy streets.
Gas -- or Oil lit of course.
The sound instantly brings me to my childhood in England. I remember low lighting at night, and the old radio - wooden, shaped like a cathedral window, with one speaker - playing BBC. V.W., Elgar and others set the mood into the night. Slower times. Best space in time to be a child.
Born in the 1940's, I fully concur with what you say; despite shortages and limitations on choice, we had a enjoyable childhood, with no restrictions on our movement, and always felt safe.
A very sweet melancholy.
Although I was born later than the 40's, it was still a magical time of freedom as a child. I too grew up with ambient lighting that signaled evening and soft breezes blowing in while watching Lassie or National Velvet. To this day I love candles and stained glass lighting, flowers, fairy lights, with strains of PBS radio in the background. Happy creating timeless joy.
Yes, at almost 71, I remember radio and then our turntable stacked with albums of all different styles of music. Seems like ages ago. I guess it was. Sigh 🎶 ♥
A child of the 50's, I was brought up in a house without a radio but, oh what times we had. Forays into the English countryside every day in the school holidays. Tadpoling in the spring, scrumping in the late summer and early autumn, got a thick ear or two from that. Also had to help out at home. We lived two and a half miles from Nantwich, the nearest shops. As my father had no car at that time I made the round trip twice a week with my mother's shopping list in my pocket. Wonderful times!!
Sometimes I wish I could become a ghost and go back in time to walk these streets unseen and simply be in the moment.
Do not fear current times, they to have there beauty, thus not revealed for many years to come...
I am feeling the same
Perhaps you already have..
look over your shoulder and you might see me
Me too I would love to walk these streets.
I am from germany and have founded RVW at coronatimes . It gaves me so much trust and power. Such beautyful music!!
I hope you are fully aquainted with his broad range, of very English music by now. Doris.
Yes, Vaughan Williams has been a great consolation to me too, these past two years. I wonder if you might enjoy this, played by the Hessischer Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester (Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra). ua-cam.com/video/LsQGFlcqUmA/v-deo.html. Ich wünsche Ihnen viel Freude beim Zuhören, und auch herzliche Grüße aus England!
The best of English music i too sat by the old radio listening in 1947.
I can't describe how much I love this song, and RVW compositions in general. They make me feel in love with the moment.
Well said.
'SONG' ?
What a lovely surprise it was for me to Discover the beautiful music of Vaughn Williams!
So happy you love it.
VW, Elgar and Delius are the three greatest British composers, IMO.
@@tomkent4656 For sure! Elgar is great. His Cello concerto played by Jacqueline Dupree is anthological. I have a CD with Elgar's sacred music and I love his Ave Verum Corpus. But I confess that I don't know the music of Delius. I have to listen It.
My great grandfather was a rag and bottlo merchant somewhere in London. These remarkable scenes depicted in Grimshaw's paintings touch something deep inside me. It's more than genes which are carried from one generation to the next, I'm sure.
thanks for sharing Bruce. born during the erly 40's, I remember many trades people with their Horse and cart, plying their wares around the streets. and of course, the Milkman ,Breadman, and small Grocery man. The only one I see now (occasionally) is the Ice cream man.
I’m sure you’re right Bruce. Perhaps you lived there in a previous life. I’ve heard it said that families reincarnate among themselves down through the centuries. The old saying about skipping the generations comes to mind. I’m sure the spirit carries on and on.
These paintings are wonderfull capturing the spirit of a bygone age, they stir something inside that I can't put into words maybe it's a longing to travel back to this time just for a moment to escape from this present life. The music and the paintings go perfect together
Agreed. Even though I wasn't from those times it is nostalgic!
@@MrDaiseymay Agreed, they deflect from the workhouse, the dosshouse, boys up chimneys, down mines, the grind of being "in service". The grim military life, the penal system, votes for landed males only, lunatic asylums, primitive medicine, death in childbirth, wife beating, public hangings, laws biased for the rich, lack of education. But, if you were rich and healthy, all the trappings of Empire. For them, a good life, as it is in every generation.
walshamite this world could do with some public hangings to demonstrate what happens to scum like child killers and murderers
@@walshamite Enter Charles Dickens... 😔😔😑😑👍👍
I know PRECISELY what you mean...
Ever since I was a preteen, I've DEARLY loved England... But, to be more specific, it was Victorian and Edwardian England, the refinement and politeness/kindness of many people, esp. in the country areas and in the north and west parts of England, etc. Also the old cultures of Oxford, Eton, Cambridge, etc. The bookish, scholarly side of Britain, C. S. Lewis, Tolkien, Dickens, the Bronte sisters, Lewis Carroll, even Darwin, etc. Vaughan-Williams has some connections here, I know. (I think he might have been distantly related to Darwin...)
There is still a part of me that longs (more) for the society of the more refined, kinder sorts from Britain and elsewhere, etc., and when I hear of British soccer hooligans, etc., so many others like them, its like a slap in the face of older sensibilities in Britain, that still ought to prevail, etc. 😑😑😑😑😑😑😑
The first 30 seconds of this music has the feeling that I'm finally home after a harsh and noisy day of work and at last I can enjoy peace and quiet at my bedroom looking the full moon outside my window as my neightborhood slows down to sleep.
What a divine marriage. RVW and Atkinson Grimshaw. Perfect union of the auditory and visual senses.
So beautiful! I love Vaughan Williams but never heard this before, and completely ignorant of the artist, thank you so much for transporting me out of my little bubble here in Connecticut!!
Glad you enjoyed the video Susan and that it helped you to escape the confines of your bubble for a short while.
If you're ignorant of the music of RVW, you have a lifelong treat in store! Nine symphonies, all very different from one another, several major concertos (including one for tuba), wonderful choral music, and on and on...
Wow🙌 Listen to that violin at the start! That's the kind of music that describes the feelings one has upon seeing the love of their life for the first time.
Amazing night scenes - who would have thought copper green with a moon would work?!
Many thanks for introducing me to this beautiful piece and this wonderful artist.
Pleasure, glad you enjoyed the video.
What glorious paintings accompanied by the wonderful music of the genius Vaughan Williams . My heart is weary of this World at times but these scenes and music lift my heart and soul , thank you for putting this together . Intoxicating .
Glad you enjoyed it Ken. I have to agree, our antics do get wearisome at times; it's nice to escape into another world occasionally.
I enjoy my morning coffee watching this on my 86 inch tv. The blend of music and art is lovely, thank you for posting this.
Pleasure, glad you enjoyed it Dave.
WELL, WE ALL HAVE TO HAVE TREETS, FROM TIME TO TIME.
Beautiful paintings and beautiful music. They go so well together. Very stirring.
This evening on my tv I watched this UA-cam delight. The blend of paintings and music was inspired. The instrumental arrangement of the Serenade - wow!
Thanks so much for your hard work, and posting this lovely montage. It carried me to another place, far away from the lockdown.
Pleasure, I'm glad you enjoyed it so much.
One year on, I guess you are still watching.
Simply majestic! The images of London and even of the British countryside just gush out as I listen to this heavenly piece! Of course the paintings add tremendously to the whole experience...
Cannot believe how many people not discovered this masterpiece of music, ho the paintings are just so, if won the lottery I would have a whole museum given to the public to say, JHG & of course RVW. 🤓
I haven't found the girl of my dreams yet, but if I ever found her, I'd like to look her in the eye while I hear this serenade in the background...
without a doubt!!! Pure and true atmospheric pictures!!!
Thank you, for sharing so much Beauty, the musical work and the beautiful paintings. Greetings from Mexico.
Glad you enjoyed the video Agapito. Greetings from England.
One of the most atmospheric painters of all time.
Everytime I listen it takes me back to peaceful and picturesque walks along the embankment at night with a hint of enchantment especially during winter and Christmas time
These paintings are amazing! Warm and life-like, while also nostalgic and romantic.
Whenever the world gets crazy today I turn to the quiet sound and the paintings of John Atkinson Grimshaw
What a fantastic picture "Reflections on the Thames, Westminster" by John Atkinson Grimshaw.
I love the music of English composers and thanks to this post, I am seeing the work of our best painters into the bargain.
Listening with much love and appreciation from Idaho.

Lovely presentation. Grimshaw is one of my favorite artists and I have a couple of his repros in my Victorian living room. His use of lighting is so magnificent and ghostly ethereal. Nice choice of music as well with Vaughan Williams.
I just came across this while browsing UA-cam. I haven't heard this beautiful piece for a while. This performance is wonderful. The artwork by John Atkinson Grimshaw mesmerized me as the pictures almost came to life. Thank you for posting this moment of serenity.
Pleasure, glad you enjoyed it John.
Lovely. Love Grimshaw's work and RVW one of my fav composers
One of the most stirring and beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. The pictures add to this. I sometimes play the Serenade three times .one after the other because it is so uplifting. Thank you!

O, the music! The art! What rapture! You curate one of the most sublime channels I've encountered. Thank you, Mr. Harris!
It's a pleasure, I'm glad you enjoy my channel. Composers and artists can occasionally remind us that mankind is capable of doing wonderful things, (if that doesn't sound too pretentious).
@@davidharris2844 Nope--accurate.
Hi there David thank you for your addition you have helped me realise that there is so much Vaughn-Williams that I don't know yet.
Hi Stan, I've made quite a few pleasurable discoveries myself since I started putting these videos together. Especially about art, my previous knowledge being non-existent. Glad you enjoyed this one anyway.
One of my favourite RVW pieces-but O, the lovely paintings! Why have I never heard of this artist before? I could live happily with one of his painings on my wall....
Me too. That is why I shared it. It is soothing and lovely.
You can buy quality Prints and frame them, much to chose from. OR, buy his book of large scale quality Prints
Mr. Harris - Really extraordinary the way you've tied together these 19th Century John Grimshaw paintings of London with RVW's music!!
The sailing ships are particularly appealing, in terms of highlighting Britain's maritime dominance in the world at that time.
Again, great job!!
Glad you enjoyed the video Joseph. Grimshaw's paintings often seem to be able to reflect the mood of a piece of music.
Warm thanks and greetings from Sweden!
And the greetings of the season, (if it's not too early), to you Jan.
@@davidharris2844 Many thanks to you David!
I have listened to this piece over 30 times in the past 2 - 3 years. The beautiful paintings also match to the mode of the music. Many thanks to David Harris!
It's a wonderful piece of music. I'm pleased you enjoyed the paintings as well.
The book of Grimshaw paintings is still available
Strange how we watch a video such as this quite casually. But it must have taken you hours of careful thought to put together. Well done.
Thanks for your kind comment Gareth. It does take a fair bit of time putting these things together, but it's always enjoyable and usually educational. Unfortunately, these days, I don't seem to get the time to do any.
These captured moments of long lost times, as seen through the eyes of an artist who had the talent to realise that, given a rising moon shining through half lit gossamer clouds, beauty existed even in the turbulence of street lit urban townscapes and busy London dockside locations. That’s the true legacy of John Atkinson Grimshaw. Beautiful and emotionally evocative scenes with music charged with atmosphere. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for your continuing interest in my channel. The paintings really do draw you in.

Both music & paintings are outstanding .
I STAND PROFOUNDLY HUMBLED AND INDEBTED TO THE GOD SENT GENIUS OF THIS ETHEREAL, DIVINE COMPOSITION.
Hauntingly beautiful. A definitive performance.
Please do not take this down, ever.
Glad you enjoyed it. I certainly have no plans to take any of my videos down, but I should warn you that there are rumblings of new copyright laws coming into force at some point, which might impel UA-cam to take all such videos down. It might be an idea if you download the video using something like aTube Catcher.
@@davidharris2844 that made me dash for my biro--'Tube Catcher', right.
@@MrDaiseymay Hi Philip, it's called aTube Catcher. There are doubtless others that do the job just as well.
I can stare those paintings for hours and hours and keep discovering hidden messages and treasures. I am time travelling and can feel every event despite not in a state of understanding as to how I being an irrelevant character of that time relate so much of the unknown.
Brillent works of art
La música de Vaughan Williams es muy evocadora, tiene la capacidad de conmover desde los primeros compases y transportarte a lugares conocidos o a lugares imaginados. Es preciosa e indescriptible por su originalidad.
One of my all-time favourite composers and one of my all-time favourite artists, what a winning combination!
Comfort of this music is beyond words
I just happened upon this tear-inducing opus and I can honestly say that RVW definitely had the Midas touch as a composer: everything he composed just turned to gold.
Amazing Paradise on Earth, both dream and reality.
Lovely to see Gloucester and Bristol feature prominently; and not just London. One of RVW's most hauntingly beautiful melodies.
HELLO--CAN YOU GUIDE ME TIMEWISE, TO THE BRISTOL & GLOUCESTER SCENES PLEASE
David, Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together. I have always loved Grimshaw's work.
Glad you enjoyed it David. Like you I love Grimshaw's stuff, all those brightly lit windows and glimmering reflections.

This is one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL pieces of music Vaughn Williams ever wrote. The beauty of its is so very nostalgic and warm. Definitely something for a beautiful evening, or even a rainy day that is peaceful.

Glad you enjoyed the video Deborah. I have a print of one of Grimshaw's paintings hanging on my sitting room wall and I never tire of looking at it. His paintings are so atmospheric, all those oranges and greens and gleaming surfaces. Whistler apparently said "I considered myself the inventor of nocturnes until I saw Grimmy's moonlit pictures."

I wonder who the lady was that is seen 1.25 and in many pictures? I wonder if she ever got to her destination or perhaps she was returning?. I love the warmth of the light in shops compared to the wet and gloomy streets, you can just imagine going into these shops to be greeted by a friendly face and regional accent. You can just imagine JAG perched on some street corner with easel working away and the people not realising that they are being captured forever, Ghosts. Truly nostalgic
That's pretty much how I feel when I look at paintings like these. Other times, other lives, each with their own story to tell. And this moment in their existence lives on thanks to Mr. Grimshaw. Like you, I would love to be able to walk into the painting and go into one of those shops.
THE ATMOSPHERE CAPTURED IN THESE ICONIC PAINTINGS IS TRULY GRIPPING. I COULD EASILY STEP INTO ANY OF THESE STREET SCENES. IT WOULD SOON TRANSFORM MY IDEAS OF WHAT LIFE UNDER THOSE CONDITIONS MIGHT BE. I DO REMEMBER GAS-LIT STREET LAMPS, AND THAT STRANGE MELLOW YELLOW LIGHT, WHICH HAD VERY LIMITED RANGE. BEYOND 10 FEET, IT WOULD BE ALMOST TOO DARK TO SEE A FACE IN DETAIL. THE COLD AND DAMP ATMOSPHERE WAS CONSTANT IN THE BIG CITY, AND ALMOST NEVER WITHOUT FOG BY SOME DEGREE. THE SHOP LIGHTS ARE WONDERFULLY CAPTURED--MOSTLY OIL LIT. THE HANSOM CABS, AND MEN IN TOP HATS COMPLETE THE VICTORIAN IDEAL OF THE MODERN DAY DREAMER.
Hope this is never ever is taken off.
