Frederick Delius - 1862-1934 - An English composer. Born in the north of England to a prosperous mercantile family, he resisted attempts to recruit him to commerce. He was sent to Florida in the United States in 1884 to manage an orange plantation. There he soon neglected his managerial duties, and in 1886 returned to Europe. Having been influenced by African-American music during his short stay in Florida, he began composing. After a brief period of formal musical study in Germany beginning in 1886, he embarked on a full-time career as a composer in Paris and then in nearby Grez-sur-Loing, where he and his wife Jelka lived for the rest of their lives, except during the First World War.
In his later years Delius became blind and severely disabled, unable to complete his life's work. In 1928 a music teacher and fellow Yorkshireman from Scarborough offered his services as an amanuensis to the blind and paralyzed composer. This was to allow a radiant Indian Summer in the final years at Grez.. Composing continued with the aid of Eric Fenby taking down the notes, offering his complete devotion to Delius. Fenby also enabled the completing, reshaping and promoting of so much of Delius' previous work. The story has been beautifully told in Ken Russell's iconic film 'A Song of Summer' available on this channel
North Country Sketches composed 1913 - 1914, is for me a seasonal musical tone picture of the Yorkshire dale and moorland countryside, over which Delius spent many hours walking or riding during his childhood.
Delius was a true poet of nature, all its moods portrayed musically by his genius. .

There are three recent men worth a hoot - Messiaen, Debussy and Delius. They rejigged the forms and orchestration and made improvisation possible for orchestral music. I am in love with their works. I used to think there are only two subjects for art - the land and the people. But there is also God.

I discovered Delius more then 40 years ago via a radio program in my country with the title "Portrait of an unknown composer". I immediately loved his music and still do. This performance with Sir Charles Mackerras is outstanding and the sound quality is magnificent. Thank you !
Similar for me. Heard Delius' music on a "classical" radio station several decades ago. They played the North Country Scetches and I was drawn in immediately. Different, but also very scenic is Ma Mère l'Oye by Ravel. You all probably know it, but I thought I'd mention it, just in case...
Thank you for the upload, I've loved the North Country Scetches, the Florida Suite etc. for decades. One of the popular streaming platforms (spot i fy) was my source to further explore Delius' works during the last years.

A wonderful evocative piece. I think it is Delius's finest. Well, I'm very wedded to the North of England and this piece conjures up its splendid, sometimes bleak, countryside.

I first got to know Delius after seeing a documentary on BBC2 about him and his music. Even though I have had had a love of various classical music for years I was amazed I had never come across him.
Then I went to HMV only to find not a single album by him. At least half a dozen every other well known composer but nothing g by poor Freddy.🙄 Go figure
You have to search a little deeper for the real gems ....... there is plenty of choice for his major works of note, less so for some of his choral works, sonatas and concertos. Used to shop around all the record shops before the advent of on-line it's so sadly a wonder how any high street recorded music outlets can survive. Thanks for the comment. A comment below about this being as close as Delius ever came to writing a symphony got me to thinking. I think it IS a de facto symphony: it has four movements (most symphonies have four movements), each piece can stand alone but the four movements together comprise a musical statement. 2021.
A symphony of 'Nature' by one who could best transcribe her moods in musical tones.

@@samaritan29 No. Definitely not. It is a collection of 4 lovely tone paintings with nothing to connect them except the unique loveliness of Delius's style. This is opinion of a retired veteran of nearly 40 years of symphony performance, but I welcome counter-comments.

Maybe I'm wrong, but this piece always feels like the closest Delius ever got to writing a symphony. It shares more than a few characteristics with VW's Pastoral symphony, a work that breaks the symphonic formula and is quite un symphonic.

I listened to two different orchestras play it and listened to several sections multiple times. You are right; as you said above, "It's the very epitome of poetic beauty in music". @@duanereed1857 I'm very glad to share that with you, Duane. I was born in Florida 77 years ago, and spent my earliest childhood there. I feel that Delius perfectly captured the serene beauty of that state in his music. I recently discovered his symphonic poem "Hiawatha". I can't remember what video site it was on, but it was the very next music that Delius wrote after he composed "Florida". It's worth a UA-cam search.

Just one mistake by Feline throughout all of the glorious photographic images used across four fabulous movements - during IV. The March of Spring, at about 22:16, is an image of autumn leaves on branches in the foreground. Otherwise, a thoroughly enjoyable journey through three English seasons.
well spotted! Some times those Autumn leaves are reluctant to go especially on the English Oak, they can cling on into the next Spring!

I've never understood why Delius doesn't seem to be performed much in the US. In college, I played in an orchestra which did his Brigg Fair, which is a beatuiful piece. I don't think I ever heard any of his music here otherewise, and I used to attend cncerts in a major city for several years. If you don't have it, find the boxed set of Sir Thomas Beecham onducting a lot of Delius's works. Some of the recordings are historic, but the sound is OK even on the old recordings.
Thank you Charles. Sadly too little of this fine music is played today generally Sir T. Beecham is the best advocate but not always a favourite for every piece of Delius. Delius as in his life, is unique and seems very remote even in the established classical circles. There will come a time for Delius and we need this deep passion now I think.
Anyone who has studied history knows electric music couldn't exist because in Delius time there wasn't electricity for modern rock or hard music to exist besides hard music doesn't have the melody that soft classical has to blend in with nature for quiet meditation!
