I get the feeling that the people here, so well depicted by George Clausen, were real people of rural England that he caught in a moment of their daily struggles to live off the unforgiving land. We see them here through his eyes as he skilfully captured their strength, sheer determination and inherent beauty. It shines through his pictures, as freshly today as it did, though separated as we are across the century or more that divides us.
RVW is one of the greatest composers and most overlooked. He and A. Copeland, S.Barber and E. Elgar are the best among modern composers. So deeply moving
They certainly are. Someone meticulously searched and made a beautiful and thoughtful slide show. Beautiful music and fine art. I feel I’m gettin above my raisin. With this one.
One of the greatest music compositions ever written. Makes me think about life, death, and the after life. In fact words can't explain what this piece of music does to me. Thank you David for uploading this soul touching masterpiece.
I'm listening and it transports me away...even though I'm riding with my beloved Dark Horse!!!... Your job is a dream Mr.Harris!!!...I greet you from my field my Bighouse"...👱♀️🐎❗️🤝❗️....my respects to you❗️

Thank you David, shews the unremitting hardness of agricultural Life no that long ago, I'll only be 78 at Christmas and living deep in the West Country I too remember the hard Work at Harvest Time and Haymaking, going round the corners of the Field with a Western Scythe, and how heavy the Bales were under the Hedge after baling, and the work of loading the Trailers with the Bales off the Field and that was easy compared to the Work 20 Years afore. RVW outstanding, gey wonderful. Thank you for sharing.
Possibly one of my favourite musical pieces. There is never a dull moment and it always manages to trigger something deep within my soul. As always accompanied by gorgeous paintings, by an artist I was unfamiliar with. Thank you once again.
Beautiful English music, complimented by beautiful English peasant farming scenes. It could almost be anywhere in Northern Europe 150 years ago. We were a good looking people back then, weren't we! Sadly gone forever.
I stumbled upon this video by happy accident. Thank you, thank you for the wonderful marriage of beautiful music and outstanding art! I shall revisit this again and again.
Hello David, Thank you for this beautiful look into the past, George Clausen depicted so well the life of simple people.. Over my life i have been privileged to encounter his paintings, either in the form of a simple postcard, or a page in a book, and at the Royal Academy in Piccadilly. Thank you for triggering my memories. What a different place is our World today ! Vaughn Williams, well, how can his music be bettered? All in all, thank you David. Happy 2025.❤️ Best love, Valerie.
And a very Happy New Year to you and yours Valerie. I too love Sir George Clausen's paintings; his characters are so vivid, I always find myself wondering what their lives were like and how they unfolded. Best wishes.
I always associate RVW with 'the Golden Age of British Cinema' 1940s to '50s, Ealing Comedies, Powell and Pressburger and Gainsborough costume dramas. And the feeling of optimism after the Victory of '45 and the 'Now Win the Peace' optimism. I have always let this wonderful piece of music conjure up images of a serviceman or airman or sailor back with his girlfriend/fiancee/young wife walking across a sunny harvest landscape, taking in the views, stopping off at locations to refresh or make love, say in the hay or in the shade of a tree. While church bells ring in the background, a fair can be heard or even Morris dancers entertain locals and visitors. So English...but in the best kind of way
David you’ve done it again with the perfect match of music and pictures. One of the early ones used on the CD cover of RVW early chamber music including his wonderful piano quintet. The very soul of Englishness. Thank you so much and as one of your subscribers so rightly says, perfect for Sunday morning reflections....before Church.
Glad you enjoyed it Philip. I've used Sir George Clausen's paintings to accompany other pieces by Vaughan Williams - obviously this is a subjective choice, but they seem to suit to my way of thinking.
This piece definitely feels ahead of its time. it has a true cinematic feeling to it. I would do anything to hear it performed live someday. thank you as always for the upload!!
We used part of this, (with appropriate permissions), as background music to the opening narrative of a film we made about our local Territorial Battalion and the Gallipoli Campaign. It is such a beautifully observed piece of music and set the tone very very well.
Glad you enjoyed it Des. I'm rather keen on Sir George Clausen's paintings, as you might have guessed from my use of them in other uploads. Hope you are keeping well.
David, If you ever find yourself in the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District, let me know and call in for a cup of tea or a cold beer, you'd be most welcome. Kindest regards Lee.

Hi Malena, I didn't realise the music was used in Ben Hur. You learn something new every day, as the saying goes. Hope all is well with you and yours, and that you enjoy your weekend. Best wishes.
Jan 1st 2025. I have just discovered your channel and what a marvellous start to the new year!! I'm not sure what more can be said about Vaughn William's masterpiece, but the Clausen paintings are stunning. Why Clausen isn't more celebrated I can't imagine. He reminds me so much of that other great recorder of rural life from an earlier age, Jean Francois Millet. By the way, which recording of the Tallis Fantasia is this? Warmest regards from beautiful Shropshire , and thank you for making my day.
This beautiful work is one of many reasons why RVW was England's greatest 20th. century composer!
Superb!Speaks to the heart!Ralph Vaughn Williams is my absolute favorite English composer. Thanks!

Yes, I like how the paintings hide the poverty, the sickness, the hard labour from their faces.🙃
