My Buggie calico cat wasn't experienced with hunting and took on the big chippy that fought back. She lugged the monster male up to the porch, over the stairs and inside for me to see. She had a rip in her coat, basically a slice through her skin for several inches which I took care of by putting her in onesies so she couldn't lick it. She's fine 4 yeas later and time for her to relax without that heat cycle.
Cali. With all her energy and love for running in the forest, it sure didn't slow her down much, at least not that she's showing. On your side, I am always impressed with your meticulousness and patience in your building habits.
Poor Cali, she is such a sweetheart. She lives life to the full , and like all of us when young we are not that careful. Sure of our abilities we all usually learn the hard way damn it. Dogs are not much different. Or mine wasn’t. I will wait for news, many will be waiting with me. Lots of love and cuddles for Cali.

Sorry about your dog. I know how you feel. I lost my dog about 8 months ago and I'm having some difficulty trying to come to terms with his passing. And how his health just deteriorated overnight. My vet failed to stay current and lacked the knowledge needed with regards to Idexx kidney testing. They were still testing the old way, which is outdated. And my pups kidney issues were overlooked. The old way is outdated. Idexx testing would've give us a 6th month or more warning. And if early enough a chance to change things to prolong life. Instead of finding out hes suddenly in stage 4, overnight. My vet missed the warning stage, and stages 1,2,& 3. It was a nightmare. I miss him so much. He was my best friend. My vet didn't even know about the current Idexx testing. I did full panel testing, blood, everything once a year. Anyway didn't mean to rant, just saying I know how you feel. I wish I could have one more day with pepper. Just one more day.

The beauty of your photography often brings me to appreciative tears. Your carpentry & building skills always amaze, & the patience & peace you possess is so admirable. I swear as I watch you work near the smoldering fire I smell the smoke. When I was growing up, we lived in the country till I was 15 & moved to the city. I remember Dad saying we couldn't run around barefoot there, that we had to wear shoes in our new city & felt a pang of sorrow. I truly miss being in the country to appreciate the fresh air, watching wild animals & birds, wander to my heart's content & lay on the side of the canal or ridge staring up at the sky to find figures/shapes to compare with my brothers. Dad built homes, made furniture, & poured cement & was always had a new project to try. Mom was pretty handy too making clothes, recovering chairs & couches, making crafty household items & cooking/baking for us & explaining with understanding, all the nuances of human interaction & growing into knowledge of life & people. I watch your daily routines, building, hunting, loving Calli & interacting with nature & appreciate being reacquainted with that. Hope Callie heals fast, she's such a sweet dog. Animals don't show pain to humans unless they trust you. She needs to go to the vet. You might want to keep her with your wife until she gets better. She'll hate not being in nature, but that might be the best remedy until she heals. Otherwise, she's going to continue to run ok n it.
@Shed Life well they are doing something they were bred to do. Jumping/walking on sheep is something a whole lot of different shepherds do. And border collies in general are very jumpy. It's kinda stupid to expect them to not do it, and call them stupid for doing something we bred them to do 😅
@Shed Life dosent change the fact that they were bred to do it. It's instinctual. It has nothing to do with intelligence. Yes, obviously you can teach them not to, but you can't expect them to stop doing it on their own. With Cali, she did some kind of mistake, and she will learn to not do it again. Your border collies, according to their instincts, did not make a mistake. They learn to refine their movements, so that they will do it better next time. Huge difference.

Your dogs will not stop jumping on the sheep without being told to do so, because it's an instinctual behavior, even if they get hurt doing it. A siberian husky will not stop pulling when hurt. A cane corso will not let go from its prey when kicked, even if it hurts. Back in the days, a dog that stops its job because something hurts, wasn't worth the time anymore, and was culled. The dog who kept doing its job, kept on going, and would reproduce. A dog that's hurt from something that's not job related, like Cali was, have no reason to continue doing whatever it was that she did. If a dog kept getting hurt from stumbling on a branch, or not paying attention to their feet, they would not survive either. It's very basic.
