Installing a Wood Stove and Oak Flooring in an Off-Grid Tiny Log Workshop

- With plunging temperatures, I prioritize insulating the floor and installing a wood stove in my off-grid log cabin workshop. I remove the temporary pine flooring and install smoked oak boards that I milled last summer from trees I cut down on my property to make room for a vegetable garden.
At the end of the video, Cali, my wife and I go for a walk along a large river, filming waterfalls and wildlife.

I'm sitting in my lift chair where I've been the last few months, since I'm now living in a very nice nursing home in Nashville Indiana.
My wife & I are no longer able to get out & go fishing in our boat, like we did up to 3 yrs. ago.
Watching Shawn & his lovely wife starting over together in their new property along with Cali, is the highlight of my Friday evenings now. My wife is still at home & we talk on the phone every day. I miss us being being together more than anything. We are both 83 now, and been married 52 yrs. & we thank God that our minds are still young and intact.

Fellow Aussie here. I identify totally with what you are saying. I too have health issues. A Saturday morning with My Self Reliance is the highlight of the week. A down to earth man, with an inspiring life and generous enough to share it with us. Shawn has blessed many with his vids.
You are not alone. It is nice to watch things in the outdoors places I can no longer go. Sitting right there with you guys, even if my broken body is thousands of miles away.

They are waking up to the truth of who they are...I believe we are all here learning the lessons needed to be learned, then those that "graduate" will ascend inn consciousness, meaning they will stop acting up because they will be able to "see" and feel their own truth from a higher mind-heart connection...

Haha. I am an English teacher for foreign adults in the UK. It doesn’t snow in my city very often, but a few years ago we had a huge snow covering which lasted for for several days. I remember it was the first time my Arab students had ever been in real snow. They were sooo happy, it was like being on another planet for them. Beautiful to witness. Lots of great snowball fights in the street!

Beautiful footage of the water forming the ice shelf. When I see you using primitive tools I imagine my Great Grandfather, who immigrated from Germany, constructing a milking stable and barns on his 600 acre farm in Northern Indiana. I remember seeing Square beams in the milk house as a very small child. And the odor of raw milk carries me back there to a time of peace in my life. Thank you for sharing your beauty with us.

In Chicago here, all the chaos around me & I can escape to this. I am a woman but all you do is appreciated! My grandfather built a new home in his 80's in Tennessee watching him work was a marvel..he has passed & was almost 101. I know it was his love of the outdoors & living off the land that kept him living so long! Thanks..for inspiring me later in my life to do so...blessings.

The editing, and therefore the storytelling, are pitch perfect throughout. How you storyboard as you work on the hut is beyond skillfull and as impressive, in it's quiet way, as the breathtaking collage that finishes the film.
Loved this brings calm to a chaotic time in my country, may God bless you & your family, I was born & raised on a farm although I am soon to be 74 & my husband 76, we still farm about 300 acres used to farm more. We raise soybeans, wheat corn, & rice. Live in small rural town in the Crowley ridge hills, farm in flat land, not many small farmers like us anymore, but thankful & blessed to still have my feet firmly in my country upbringing. Love the mountains & forest never been to Canada, but love visiting the Smokie Mountains in Tn not far from Arkansas. Sorry I am rambling but just wanted to tell you how much I love your videos, watch everyone when I get ready for sleep helps me relax. Keep filming you are sharing your joy with a lot of people.

I could watch that stream and waterfall all day and the snow is just so peaceful. This is also my happy place. I have been in a very dark place the last few days and needed this. I lost my 14 year old golden retriever, Charlie, on Tuesday and I just can't stop crying. I love watching Callie play but also reminds me of what I'm missing. Hug her for me.

I had to put my dog down this past Saturday, she had developed cancer of the spleen, I miss her so much. Watching this and seeing Cali has lightened my heart. Never underestimate your worth my friend. You add so much joy to this world.

I myself am looking to by some land near water a stream for fishing and with the wooden areas as well. I’m going to use a dome home upon a pedestal platform but will be building other out buildings for tolls, compost toilet and an outside oven area as well. I’ve followed your for a year now I’m very impressed and in aww. I’m nearly retired so this experience shall be a blessing. Matthew, this is what I love about the human experience. There are tons more people out there that build us up rather than tear us down. I was about to thank Shawn for his up living videos and his message of hope and always moving forward. Without that where are we? When you leaned back to take that first sip of chaga heated over the new stove in the workshop, I felt a level of satisfaction right there with you.
Especially beautiful is the wood stove and hand tools on the wall... aside from the breathtaking landscapes!
This man is in presence, he is walking in state of meditation and depth. Because he has removed himself from the chaos of society and the thoughts that come with it. This state is something we all can get back if we silence and sit still. Then with this state comes a sense of Knowing. Nothing else needs to be said. Knowing what? you can only find that out yourself.

Hi James, hope you're keeping well and safe. I've been following you for about a year now off and on. Its truly amazing how you build these log cabins by using manual tools that look ancient compared to the electrical tools we have today. I really enjoy how you make everything look so easy, and effortless. I also noticed how you pay close attention to detail. Everything you do is very well thought out and meticulously put together.
For me personally, I enjoy how you add the details to what ever it is your building. This to me tells me its not just about building a log cabin or a workshop, but its the fine creative details you add, that makes it so much special.
I'm sorry to hear about your move since you put so much work and effort into building that log cabin.
I look at it this way, when one door closes another one opens. Maybe this was a blessing for you and your family. At least you had the opportunity to spend some time with what you built.
