Mate, you've made the right choice. Business class on a bullet train is the way to travel in China nowadays if you can afford it. It's spotlessly clean, spacious with massive legroom, and offers impeccable service, not to mention the efficiency of traveling. Have a good time in Suzhou while you're at it.
You are supposed to go downstairs to exit the train station. Only when you need to transit you have to go upstairs to the waiting room. That's the reason why you found it was so hard to go upstairs and there was no escalator.

I also went to Suzhou 4 years ago without accommodation, the great thing about China is that you can travel randomly and find local accommodation easily via app.
The business seat has a special entrance to the station. Free snacks and drinks will be provided when waiting for the bus, and a waiter will lead the way to take a seat in advance. Suzhou is my favorite Chinese city. It's a perfect combination of traditional Chinese culture and ultra-modernity. There are many well-preserved old towns that take you back to what China was like 700-1000 years ago.
Some youtubers make a big deal about switching off their cameras at the security checkpoints. This guy just walks through with camera recording regardless. Nice.

We have good tech and money to develop our public transportation system. Since we are under one administration, the progress is a lot smoother than most of western countries. But in terms of people, we are almost the same barely advanced. Yes tech can help us here and there, but it’s just to a certain point. As you can see we still use old ways like whistles and loud mega phones to manage people. Something just never change.
Hey Dany it is interesting that you made it to the Shanghai Station, which used to be the main station but not any more since 2010, I recommend checking out HongQiao station, it is 17KM from the city center but it is way more massive and interesting, and it is connected with the HongQiao airport in the same monolith complex.
Don't forget to travel to Hangzhou, a city as famous as Suzhou in ancient times
