Love the oldschool narrator with the background music! Classic!

My dad worked in the oil industry for 45 years. He started as a refinery mechanic and worked up to upper management at a major. He had a lot of dealings with Phillips and says they were always competent straight shooters with solid management. Hard to believe an outfit from Bartlesville OK would be developing Nortb Sea oil but they did.
About the same time as this video covers my dad’s company was working to open the North Slope of Alaska to oil production. I got to know the man who led that effort quite well in his later years. He passed away last year. There was high drama in opening up the North Slope with entire multi billion dollar companies literally putting their entire future, and that of thousands of employees,on the line. Just like Phillips’ experiences in the North Sea.
There was such a narrow window to get the thousands of tons of equipment around Point Barrow before the ice returned, possibly crushing and sinking all or much of it over the winter. While my dad never served offshore he did spend plenty of time in Alaska. Hated it.
Folks are right this kind of promo film is too rare these days. That’s a shame. This one was great.

was at Ekofisk yesterday, really cool "city" at seas with 6 rigs in the main complex connected with bridges that you have to walk over 1km to get from one side to the other.

The panning shot of Stavanger at 2:03 is such a fun thing for me to see, seeing as it's my home town and it's changed a fair bit since the 1970s (I wasn't even born then), yet it's still very recognizable. However, I find it funny how the narrator says that it's located 175 miles south-EAST of Oslo. That would place it somewhere on the east coast of Sweden, or possibly in the Baltic Sea, as opposed to on the WEST-coast of Norway.

3:24 I like how they came up with a basically fool-proof bottle breaking method, even welding that piece of angle iron to the hull. It's bad luck if the bottle fails to break!

One or two health and safety issues noted! I particularly liked the satiety trilby rendering its wearer immune to any potential helicopter ditching in the North Sea! Great times!

"The American Petroleum Institute gravity, or API gravity, is a measure of how heavy or light a petroleum liquid is compared to water: if its API gravity is greater than 10, it is lighter and floats on water; if less than 10, it is heavier and sinks."

@@JohnWatkinsUK proper definition would be buoyancy and density since gravity still just a theory like the big bang theory. Jesuit puppet einstein had to clear his conscience near the end of his life and admitted to some of the theoretic tall tales!!!
