  • This performance of A Night In Tunisia by the great Jesus Molina ( ‪@Jesusmolinamusic‬ ) is simply staggering. So technical, so musical, but oh man, that rhythm is so insane. (Hat tip to Roni Kaspi and Sam Smith)

    Loved the humorous humility of this one. The marshmellows -- haha. I'm not as nice as you and would have also focused on that smile of Jesus's that I maliciously mis-interpret as a smug one. Thanks for all the analysis too. Totally correct about Roni -- my mind spins listening to all those subtle shifts, yet so crisp. "That's it. I quit" Boom 🤣

    The guy is fine, but compared to Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Brad Mehldau,, Herbie Hancock, he’s got a lot to learn!

      I think you may be right. I’m bad at math 🫣
      Isn’t funny how we can feel the rhythm rather easily, but can’t count it? Brains are weird.
      But how you do that drum solo over it is beyond me…

    You say that Eb7(+sharp 11 = A) and Dm6 have 2 common F and A notes. How can it be? Eb7 (the chord is Eb, G , Bb, Db) has no F. Or maybe I simply don't understand...

    • @JoshWalshMusic
      @JoshWalshMusic  10 місяців тому

      Good question. When you add an extension to a 7th chord, like a sharp 11, it implies the other extensions beneath it as well. So Eb7#11 also includes the 9th, which is F.
      (Only for 7th chords! Anything else does not imply those notes.)

    • @GrigPit
      @GrigPit 10 місяців тому

      Thanks Josh! I didn't know that the sharp 11 expresses indirectly (implies) the other extensions beneath it as well. That's why I love your channel - a real erudite musician (with such great sense of humor) explaining in simple terms relatively complex issues in music. @@JoshWalshMusic

    Thank you so much for the Analysis I loved it, You need to do a Video on Art Tedum and Oscar Peterson, and tigran hamasyan, those three are some of Jesus Molin’s Influence..😊🎉

      Thanks Marky! I have a couple on Oscar back in the archives on the channel somewhere. From the olden times lol.
      Tigran is definitely on the list for the future. I live nearby where Tatum used to play, and have tried my hand at a few transcriptions over the years.
      Great suggestions

    I'm at the age where superchops playing is boring to me. Jesus Molina is an exemption because his lines are musically great as well as super chops. I love this YT with Jesus and Arturo Sandoval ua-cam.com/video/Xjg3FY0aizs/v-deo.html

    Problem with a lot of these pianists it’s just a lot of notes for the sake of it. Having meaning to the solo requires a lot more work. These kind of fast paced note crazy solos just have no meaning to them, it goes nowhere, easily forgotten. That’s why the likes of Bill Evans could say so much more with less.

    Oh sigh... these guys are technically brillant. At the same time this high tempo meaningless crazy grooves obviously impress people while being absolutely soulless. Just wild virtuosity of human robots. Things like that explain to understand the declining position of modern jazz.

      @@JoshWalshMusic Well, I dont know other of their productions. The one I can hear here, though, does not convince me.
      It is like contorsion - absolutely stunning that something like that is possible, but the emotional impact is... well. Of course that is just me and my preception.

      I think I’m a pretty great guy. Funny? My wife probably would disagree.
      There are lots of styles of videos, if this isn’t your cup of tea you won’t offend me in the least if you need to watch someone else. That’s what I would do if I didn’t like someone’s style.
