*Romancing SaGa 3 is out now digitally on the PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PC (Steam), Vita, iOS, and Android.*
actually "Romancing Saga" series continuation are known as "Saga Frontlier" on the west, so the series aren't really gone for 20years+.
but the series has been forgotten after the disaster release of "Unlimited Saga" on PS2. that game is a pure garbage.
also IMO saga frontlier 2 storyline and music is one of the best
@@floyddominique3731 Saga Frontier 2 is a really good game. I think I still have 1&2.
Can we just give a nod to the "SPRITE WORK" Like holy cow, Romancing saga 3 has some of the most beautiful sprite designs, especially towards the final moments of the story.
yup, Looks damn good. I love good sprite work. Breath of fire 4 and valkyrie profile are some of the best around for that imo.
@@Terron29 Hell... hand me a good looking sprite game with gorgious backgrounds and 2d animation with a massive large scale story and i will take that over any modern day piece meal CGI game anyday.
@@Artimes. oh 100 percent buddy, 100 percent. Great sprite work is ageless too which is so damn good. Its like a fine wine or painting. It simply wont date if done well. I love that the indie scene pays so much homage to it. Just take a look at Sea of Stars and Eiyuden Chronicles. Both absolutely stunning.

I really appreciate that you appreciate the music of games and even leave room in your videos for it :)
I was one of those who got piqued back then when The Legend of Legacy was out on 3DS, finished it and I actually ended up loving the unfocusness of the plot and it's progression system. You feel a better sense of reward than what you do in normal JRPG
So I bought Romancing SaGa 3 and it's ... just as charming as I expected it to be :D + These bosses ... been a time since I got my ass kicked so harshly. Dragonlord + Deadly fumes = Your death lol.
This is actually one of my favourite retro RPGs currently. I love almost everything about it.
Excellent, I just bought this for the switch. Going to try it out. Own Alliance Alive and Octopath also. These companies keep stealing my money based on your videos!!
Oh boy ... I finished the game in Japanese in the pre-internet era just because my brother happened to discover what to do to enlarge the map and continue the story.
Master pieces resist the test of time. We still tell the story of Romeo and Juliet. People don't say Chrono Trigger is a product of it's time that didn't age well. No, they're just called master pieces.
I guarantee the majority of people today would not call Chrono Trigger a masterpiece if they never played it back in the day or never played anything similar; and that's where your comparison doesn't quite translate.
Chrono Trigger is largely remembered fondly for it's story while barely any of it's gameplay elements were anything new so fans of old-school RPGs can still properly appreciate the game today because they know what to expect. The SaGa series is unique among old RPGs, if you haven't played one before, you aren't going to know what to expect; you aren't going to be able to give a pass to things that haven't aged so well because they'll feel brand new to you.
A better comparison would be Secret of Mana, a game that many people still consider a masterpiece. That game has aged HORRIBLY. Things that were seen as revolutionary back then are just terrible today, anyone giving it a try now without having played it before is not going to look at it anywhere near as favourably as someone who played it when it was new.
@@JRPGGaming barely anything was new? How about seamless encounters? How about combination techs? How about AoE based skills dependent on positioning? How about killing off not just the main character but also equivalent of Link or the blank slate onto which you project yourself on and then leaving the quest to revive that to be optional? Or making most of the game optional to begin with? Other JRPGs took so long to do seamless encounters and Suikoden's combination attacks wouldn't come till the PlayStation era and JRPGs are only now catching up to Chrono Trigger and removing random encounters. The only thing it truly lacked was a complex upgrade gimmick but that wouldn't be standard until maybe FFVII.
@@JRPGGaming Hey, it's all in the eye of the beholder. I never played these kinds of games when I was younger, but I did recently watch a twelve hour let's play of Chrono Trigger and loved every second of it. The game is amazing. A masterpiece!
I went from Botw on the switch to this and I am having a wonderful time!
then try Daggerfall next, to stay in the open-world theme
Thank you for the quick run down of the game. This caught my eye on steam the other day and was wondering if it was worth jumping in. Thinking it might be a fun purchase when it goes on sale in 2020.
Great take and comparison between games! Now I understand RomSaGa series more. I just wish I get the time to start playing it..
I played the shit out of this game back in the day...and it was all in Japanese!
I have Romancing Saga 2 on my switch, haven't got round to playing it yet but this video has made me want to give it a try.
I will be quite honest. I get why Romancing SaGa 3 never became big (even in the East). However, the reasons that might have prevented it from becoming big are the reasons why I love it. It is my favourite SNES RPG and a top 5 jRPG of all time for me. And I adore what it does. Although both Octopath games are my favourites, I would have wanted them to be more like SaGa in the regards they were different. That would have made them almost perfect.
That being said, you sold me on The Alliance Alive!
I've never played any of the SaGa games except for SaGa Frontier, but I have played a bit of The Legend of Legacy and The Alliance Alive and I personally love what I have played so far from them. From what I saw from the trailers of Romancing Saga 2, 3, and some gameplay footage from the first game on the Super Famicom, I can tell that these games piqued my interest and are right up my alley. Overall, I enjoy playing JRPGs regardless if the game mechanics are either old-school or "modern". I don't care much for the "hasn't aged well" angle, for the most part, so long as I can find some level of personal enjoyment and appreciation from a game is what matters to me.
Just picked this up for the Vita.
I wish Square Enix would give Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma similar treatment to this and port them to modern consoles.
Still wish Square's port support would work on some of the bugs and also fix the text speed soon.
Love it , but i’m old school , the snes was my first console I got when i was 16 or something
I vastly preferred Legend of Legacy’s take on...just about everything. The skills were way easier to awaken and power up, you actually get to name your formations you create.
Everybody seemed to *crucify* it for just being ultimately one narrative repeated across multiple characters.
The Romancing Saga 2-3-Scarlet Grace set has really made me happy though.
Oh, I totally agree. Legend of Legacy did almost everything that Romancing SaGa 3 did but at least a little better. Unfortunately it was still too old-school SaGa for a lot of people.
The Alliance Alive managed to feel very much like a Romancing SaGa game but with a whole heap of modern conveniences, better and more expansive story-telling, and improvements pretty much everywhere.
I like all of them, SaGa, Legend of Legacy, The Alliance Alive, etc but it was immediately obvious to me why TAA was very well received compared to Legend of Legacy.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a good example of a modern hands-off RPG.
You should try the growlanser series.
Stat boosts are based on your actions, you can get random ones too, but if you use skills, you're more likely to get sp, if you use magic, you're more likely to get mp, getting hit increases chances of hp.
Yeah... which are awarded randomly. IE you are not guaranteed the stat boost at the end of combat.
Final Fantasy 2 ?
Do you have to beat the game with all characters to get the ending? I beat romancing saga 2, it was a cool game I'm hoping this one is just as good.
No. If you're going to play through it multiple times I recommend, 1 play through with Khalid, 1 with Mikhail and 1 with Sarah in commander mode and if you still feel like playing, 1 more with whoever you want.
Thanks. Im gonna pick the game up next friday.
Octopath Traveler got too repetitive for me and the story was way too anime for my taste. I remember having a blast playing the broken somewhat translated version of this so I'll have to check it out.
Who gained a whole bunch of exp by watching this romancing saga 3 I have to check it out.
Not sure why I bought this game. It was some kind of strange impulse buy. I played about 6 hours through the green-haired man until I realized I couldn't find the princess anywhere and was worried I messed it all up.
I may try again later next year...
I’d buy it but not for $30. If it goes on sale for $10 on any platform I’ll pick it up. Didn’t think octo was worth $60 after playing it either
ive played the original Saga game. have it on ps1
SaGa Frontier? Thats not the original, thats like the seventh or six one , the original were gameboy games.
i;'m not sure i've even heard of this series before.
i hope there is more to it than battles, that's the least interesting thing.
i only enjoy them when they have purpose.
Akemi Homura Haha aren’t you in for a wild ride..
If you are good, it's a 2hrs plus game on speed run. When to recruit, who to recruit, where to go?
yea i'm not sure i can tolerate this game lol
Why play romancing saga 3
Fun battle systems
Too many characters to recruit
Many weapons and techniques to learn
Many sidequest and treasures to obtain
And minigames, wars and trade
Not to mention the songs that are very good
A full plate for those who like to spend hours leveling characters
Asia will get a physical release
Aw, what?! Lucky for them.
@@ViciousBallade u can order it from playasia
Not working .tried many emulators in several mobiles but it always shows black screen
did not play the games >.> will give it a try
I was so ready to love Katarina and I do but every character is so half assed. She was the only one with a clear goal but once you accomplish that goal, which anyone can accomplish as well btw so it's not even special to her, there's no pay off, not even one line, just fade to black and you're out of there. It sucks that you have 8 characters but every quest finishes the same way and can only be tackled the same way, except for 2. By your second or third character you won't even want to bother with the game anymore.
If you played Romancing Saga 2, you would understand what I'm saying. Everything you praised about this game is done better in that game except the combat. The decisions you make in that game is not just, do quest or don't or recruit or not. Play that game and get to the Cumberland scenario and you will be shocked at how much superior its quest design is to anything in this game or even modern games.
So I should get Saga 2 instead? Well first, nevermind which one is best between the two, should I get Saga 2 at all?
Lets not give the devs TOO much credit. Many of the features praised here are straight out of western rpg';s. Obviously the devs were heavily west influenced, which is good and why this game is as good as it is.
They just should have remade this game like ff7 remake.i like old school ain't what I'm looking to play with all those great graphic jrpgs.
Eh, I like this style better than FF7R. It wasn’t even turn based
Tech With Sean agreed. I did not like the FF7 remake. I was 9 when the original came out and in my opinion it’s better then their “reimagined” and yeah the original was a finished product.
