One of us, one of us. SaGa scratches a JRPG spot like no other game in the genre. I was thoroughly impressed with Minstrel Song many years ago that I ended up playing it three times back to back. Glad you have more of an appreciation of the games now once you had more of them under your belt and scratching that curiosity to complete more. Romancing SaGa 3 is an excellent game, but overall I found RS2 as a more memorable first experience, and Minstrel Song being the greatest hits with game mechanics being my favorite. Can't wait to see your Scarlet Grace video, I probably won't be playing that for awhile. Hope you'll enjoy SaGa Frontier, it is one game that you will need to see to the end with all the characters. Hopefully SaGa madness won't inflict you too much that you end up playing Unlimited Saga to scratch that itch.
Good review. I'm surprised you mentioned that site because I played through Romancing SaGa 3 just a month ago and had the same experience as you with the site. His constant bashing of the remaster became old quite fast.
He's even doing it in this very comment section as we speak. Extrapolating whole things from small sentences that were never said. It's a bit incredible.
The best change.... We are no longer punished for grinding, like in 2. Yes regular enemies havea scaling system but bosses do not so it still makes sense to grind and level up abilities or weapon types before bosses. Also being able to save whenever whereever is a god send.
People should check out The Last Remnant. Also published by Square Enix and made by the SaGa developers. It recently got a remaster that is based on the much better balanced PC version.
I agree, The Last Remnant is really good and it's construction is very similar to Minstrel Song. I played TLR right after MS and I could really see how similar it was
Still haven't played TLR, actually. Do own it on Steam though. It's something I look forward to getting to one of these days. Heard it was initially developed with it being a new SaGa game in mind, with it being pushed as its own IP somewhere during development, but no idea how true it is exactly.
Well, thanks to your review I bought the game for 12$ on switch. And I really liked your review. Verry informative and explaining the smaller details. You earned yourself a subscriber. Awesome work.
For some reason I always thought you did a review of RS3 so everytime I wanted to look deeper into the series thanks to your previous reviews I always forget when looking for it, but not any more it seems. I've bought several of the Saga games thanks to the previous reviews and really can't wait to see more of what this series is about as I am currently in my first playthrough of Minstrel Song.
Really need to see this review pop up. I beat Romancing SaGa 2 yesterday, and boy was it an experience! Mostly great, sometimes obtuse. Especially resetting everytime you died (because who wants to lose learned Skills) was a chore. The rest was so cool, though. I'm super excited to give this game a go after seeing this review, it looks even better than RS2.
I'm so glad Square didn't do what they did with the FF5 and 6 re-release/remaster and just port over a half assed mobile game. They butchered the sprite work on those games. Such a shame cause the Romancing SaGa 3, FF6, Bahamut Lagoon, Treasure of Rudra and Chrono Trigger era of SNES sprites remain some of my favorite looking games of all time.
Looked up a random video to see if I should scoop this while on sale. Have never played any game in the series. Only vaguely familiar with the name. You’ve convinced me to get it. And have earned a new sub. Nice work.
The "Sandbox" and "replayability" of this game is insane. I played it years ago on mobile for $10. I'm now playing it on ps4 for $5. This has been a good investment for Retro gaming.
Ended up playing RS 3 over the holiday break as a result of this video, and have thought about it for the past few months. I'm a Saga fan as result, and am really looking forward to the Remaster of Frontier. Cheers.
@@redbaron1387 TBH, not really. Most of the stories are very brief, along with some of the side quests. Most of what you get out of the game is going to be from gameplay and the personal connections you make designing your team.
technically the field element mechanic was introduced in RS2. It didn't have an animation like in RS3, but it was most notable in fights like Subier, who regenerated HP when the water element became too strong on the field.
It was pretty scary on my playthrough because I was out of MP and my SP was dwindling fast against the Seven Heroes. They managed to change the field so they constantly regained 999 HP a round and I just had to power through it, often times with regular attacks. Made victory that much sweeter.
Might start with this before Minstrel or RS2. I enjoyed SG a looot, but I burnt out before completing a playthrough-managing parties before every battle puts me in an inescapable timehole!
@Fur Fag Gamer Yeah, but you won't be taking full advantage of enemy weaknesses and stage affinity and such! It seems like the game wants you to change your party specifically for each battle.
I would love to see reviews for Live A Live and the Octopath Traveller duology one of these days. The former is one of my favorite JRPGs of all time. :)
Saw this game and ran like insane to get my copy, I remember back in the day this only got in japan but always loved the ressemblance to ff6 (my fav rpg)
I am not sure how this happened just now and not when I played the game in the past but when you showed the Robin scene and sounded his theme, I immediately thought about Kamen Rider. I feel this is an obvious refence. Not sure how I did not catch it. Awesome stuff! EDIT: Just finished the video and heard the vocal cover you put. I am now sure beyond shadow of a doubt that this is a reference.
I originally Rented out this game from my local video shop when it came out all those years ago on the Super Nintendo picked up today day on special PS4 store half-price. So With this game cyberpunk 2077 and all my other they jrpgs I should be set until I've got hold of my 4K TV and then my PlayStation 5 by the end of next year or 2022
Nice Review. I enjoyed this via a fan translation back in the day. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. BTW, what is the music at the end? That's amazing!
I'm pretty interested in this. I might eventually grab the Switch version if I decide to get it. (Tho, that may be a while since I pretty much just finished my 3DS game hoarding before the eShop shuts down. Lol)
I got Saga Frontier Remaster for ps4 and i love it. It was the only Saga game i ever had back on ps1. I did not even know there were previous Sagas until now. I love SF so much I want to get Romancing 2 and 3 on the spring sale on ps4. Is there a Romancing Saga 1?
My only issue wirh this game is I have no idea where to go or what to do starting out. After the little intro adventure, I feel like everything just goes nuts, and I am unsure how to go forward. Understand I had multiple characters I chose as my main character, and each time I felt... lost. Help!
That or Scarlet Grace. I haven't decided yet. It's been very tempting to jump forward to that one, since it's fairly new and looks especially interesting. Even though I kinda started playing the series to work towards Frontier originally. I still have some time to decide, so we'll see months from now.
I'll have to try these games... Idk the gacha is cool, I really liked the attack animations, can someone recommend me other turn based jrpg? Like golden sun, golden sun is one of my fav with octopath traveler, and romancing saga seems to fit my taste but I'm always open to suggestions
OT is "better" for having more qol features, but what's more fun is a different story. RS games thrive on sense of danger like any random encounter being able to wipe you at any time.
i will say I did use that guide for most of my plythrough of RS3 but i do find his pedantic take on the excellent job they did with the remaster so asinine, so disingenuous and cringe that I'm glad i'll never meet that guy IRL.
If you scrolled down to ask if I meant Final Fantasy VI near the end? Yes, yes I did. I only just caught it now. Oh well.
