  • The first proper SaGa game since Unlimited SaGa all the way back on the PS2. After a Japan only launch on the Vita, and a string of rereleases for the Romancing SaGa series, Scarlet Grace found itself localized in the west for most major platforms. Not only marking the return of Akitoshi Kawazu's eccentric gameplay visions, but also Tomomi Kobayashi in charge of the art, and Kenji Ito making the music.
    So is it a true return to form? Let's find out in this SaGa Scarlet Grace Ambitions review.

    This one took a while to make, so I hope you all enjoy it. Here's a video about the promotional box Square Enix sent me for SaGa Re;Universe. ua-cam.com/video/uFJsH3kzD7c/v-deo.html
    Quick thoughts on Re;Universe. It's alright. I don't really like mobage or gacha, so it definitely wasn't for me. But I had a good time with it just going through the story stuff without dropping a dime on it. The game is pretty generous with what it gives you, and the combat feels like a mix between Romancing SaGa 3 and Minstrel Song. Once again, thank you to Square for sending that box my way.

    Rewatching this after going through the SaGa: Emerald Beyond demo. Currently vibrating ambiently waiting for that one to come out. Love the strange structure and combat of Scarlet Grace, and it's wild we're getting another game in a similar style.

    Awesome review I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your saga review series you give it the perspective that most average reviews would not give. I especially love your take on Kawazu being the firebringer it makes a lot of sense from the themes of the story. Keep up the amazing videos also Ys IX comes out soon I’ll be looking forward to seeing your take on that.

    Thank you for getting me into the SaGa games. I was very wary of them after being introduced to this channel via the Ys VIII review back in 2017. I am glad I gave them a shot. Played Romancing Saga 2 and 3 and Scarlet Grace on Steam and had a blast with each, especially Scarlet Grace. Square Enix is pretty picky with what they will release on PC even for remasters or ports, but glad they have done so for the recent SaGa ports and look forward to SaGa Frontier Remastered and hope they will also do SaGa Frontier 2.

      Yeah, I'm still really surprised we got all these games on PC. Or modern systems in general, to be honest. When I first covered the Wonderswan version of SaGa, Romancing SaGa 2 was on mobile only. I don't even think it was announced for modern systems yet, and I hovered over that store page contemplating buying it on there despite my dislike of playing games on mobile plenty of times.
      Just a few years later, and we've rereleases for most of the series now. It's wild.

    While I find the games super intriguing, the SaGa series has always intimidated me. I tried Romancing SaGa 2 a while ago and I just felt lost and had no idea what the game wanted me to do - I realize that you need to approach these differently from how you usually play normal JRPGs, but I never found a way to make it click for me so far.
    Would you say this game would make for a good entry point for newcomers? EDIT: Ah, just got to the part of the video where you confirm it as such. Thanks for that bit - I'll give it a shot then!

    Oh! The aspect of BP is basically the same resource management as AP in The Last Remnant. And you're right it does feel like the battle starts to escalate (even more so you linking to up to 3+ enemies in the field.
    Which reminds me... will you check out the The Last Remnant? Since it's a SaGa game in all but name (without the multiple character quests unfortunately) 😬
    Love your videos, it's been a joy to the see the channel grow and you along with it! Best wishes 👋

      Last Remnant is definitely on my list. Still not sure if I want to go for the HD rerelease or the original PC port. Original PC port didn't have a lot of the main performance issues on modern hardware anymore from that I recall and I already have it on Steam anyway.

      @@Aboveup I had the same problem, already had the PC version since... a long time, but never got far for some reason (probably lack of patience and understanding of the mechanics). The only problem I can remember having was that it required you to always have your graphical drivers updated. Which was odd... but should still run with no problems. Oh and there's the usual Unreal Engine 3 texture pop in.
      I bought the Remaster for cheap on Ps4 in the last christmas sale. So far the only difference I notice is cleaner models (unless they have held up that well), updated textures and a rebalance tweak on how Battle Rank scales difficulty. I'm having tons of fun with it right now and shouldn't be too far of the end of the first half.
      The only real problem with the PC version is that it was pulled from the steam store and there's still no sight of the remastered version there. For the sake of a review, and if by then it's still not available, I would say go with the PC version. They're nearly identical.

    Battle systems trying other types of challenges are quite interesting instead of following the samey patterns. Certainly they are less approachable to a lot of people so many devs don't try too hard to change things. I have various games i never finished because they were "different" and maybe didn't nail the right way to teach or push you to continue. I remember Natural Doctrine having some interesting stuff after a "plain" first part (timeline manipulation? the talking here kinda made me think about that game but maybe i remember it wrong) and then i dropped it.
    Still i like to (re)visit old CRPGs or JRPGs and see ideas that didn't become "standard" in the genre.

      Leonard is the veteran/hard playthrough imo. I don’t know who keeps telling people to play Leonard first, but his unstructured storyline makes the game difficult for first times. Additionally some of the first fights in leonard’s campaign are pretty difficult.
      The thing with leonard is he comes with elisabeth who has that crazy good frying pan with 40 block and comes with a role where she is less likely to be targeted. She’s clearly set up to assist leonard who is set up to be your damage dealer rather than a tank in the beginning. The problem? The frying pan doesn’t learn block. You need to equip the mace (which has much worse stats) to spark block first. These are things a newbie will have no clue about. Leonard is not a recommended first time playthrough character imo.

    • @VampirePrinceKRS
      @VampirePrinceKRS 2 роки тому

      @@jprec5174 I had wanted to start as Belmaint but read that its difficult to get him with the starting questionnaire if you hadn't beaten Urpina's or Leonard's story first. I couldn't find a guide on how to answer the questions to be sure he'd be the one to spawn. probably should of started with Urpina like the game tried to suggest with the first questionnaire but went back did it again & got Leonard so stuck with him. I have been getting farther with Leonard but it has kinda been a slog. lots of fights kicking my butt so have to try other things first. recently changed Elizabeth's weapon to I think a Rapier since I had kept the Frying Pan on since the start but her damage output seemed a lot less than any of my other characters so figured she needed a new weapon & I had plenty of other club users. there isn't much info on this game out for some reason. & some of the info I found even is misleading. I found this girl Marion fairly early & the wiki claimed she'd leave forever if I did what she wanted me to do but she's still in my party despite that.

    • @jprec5174
      @jprec5174 2 роки тому

      @@VampirePrinceKRS nah i lost marion after i saved her because I didn’t put her in my party. Doesn’t matter since i have balmaint tho.
      I grinded a lot once i got to the snow place and now my guys have all sorts of techs and spells and the game is much much easier.
      The archer girl cecelia i try to make sure has as much dex and acuity as possible for landing paralysis and quelling, a mage (taria) for heals and a turn two aoe poison. Balmaint for damage, debuffs and blunt interrupts. Leonard is still my best damage dealer. Once you get shadow reversal, wheel swing, waning moon the dude becomes a beast. But i also have roles and deflect if i need him to tank. Liz is still a clubber and kinda pointless (want to level clubs up for her) but she can debuff and block if i need extra cover.
      Because of lis’s first role she’s great in crooked cross formation in the front which boosts her damage. Even tho the front spot makes her more likely to be attacked her role does the opposite and she’s almost never targeted. So she makes a good flexible unit for short swords debuffs, defense, etc while also doing decent damage.
      Also don’t listen to the nonsense about grinding making the game too hard. Yes monsters scale up with you but if you grind to get more techs, roles, spells, and better equipment the game becomes much easier. I have no idea why people say grinding is bad. It’s just that you don’t have to grind if you don’t want to.

    • @VampirePrinceKRS
      @VampirePrinceKRS 2 роки тому

      @@jprec5174 oh. Marion only leaves if you don't use her? yeah I tried her out basically right away. pretty sure she was the second new character I obtained so wanted to try her out some. only characters I had before her were the starting cast of Leonard, Elizabeth & her crew, & had obtained Hagar. & very true grinding has been helpful. if I'm having trouble with one quest I tend to go back to other areas to either grind some easier battles or find easier sidequests to complete. I do need to get back to the game though. I kinda started Shin Megami Tensei V & sorta left Leonard out on a boat in the middle of the ocean.

    About the beggining's statement
    Im not the biggest fan of not allowing the player to distribute points in a character sheet for character creation tho
    Its ok for games that havent character creation at all to dont have those as character building can be done during gameplay
    But to a game that allow some kind of customization on the start, it just takes a lot of the fun.
    I think that if the descriptions are detailed enough to explain what each attribute does and what are the most and least important ones, you have enough to start such as fallout or wasteland 3 does.
    Games being way too streamlined nowadays make it very lacking in terms of actually making my own character
