@@enzocrespin5806 Yes, there are several major flaws within the game: 1. *The city feels dead and empty.* You can talk to some pedestrians or even obtain "side quests" from NPCs, but otherwise there's nothing else to do. *There's only one shop in the game, and it's handled by an NPC that doubles as a save station.* 2. *Boring "side quests"* that seem more like a challenge rather than an actual quest, like *"kill an enemy with this method"* or *"collect an item then return it to quest giver".* 3. *Poor NG+ design and replayability.* Imagine spending hours to get the best equipment for your team, only to find out *there's no level scaling in EX New Game (NG+) and everything dies in one hit.* I would argue that the characters in the game are pretty bland with shallow development; the sort you always see in generic anime/manga series. One thing about the SAS system. You can upgrade the powers by increasing your bonds with the respective characters. Sometimes it can change the power entirely, for example, clairvoyance: allows you to see invisible enemies and get perfect dodges easier. Not much right? When you fully upgrade it, it does all that PLUS: increasing crush damage (think sekiros guard system, once the bar is gone, then it's an instakill) & allows you to instantly stun an enemy off a perfect dodge counter
The main thing Scarlet Nexus makes me think is that I wish Bamco did more original stuff like this. I mean, the plot and writing might not be world shaking but I'd much rather have more of this, and interesting combat systems to boot, than the endless grind of going through whichever anime arc of whichever popular show - that fans of said anime know like the back of their hands - they've decided to push each year. Oh, one thing I would say is that the dualsense haptics really add to the combat if you're playing on PS5 - the feedback is subtle but feeling the tension build in the trigger as you prepare a psychokenisis attack really adds to fighting and the feeling of that tension breaking and the trigger going limp if you get hit before it's done really hammers home the disappointment you didn't get to let it fly.

You just earned yourself a new subscriber! I havent played Scarlet Nexus yet and a lot of video reviews I've watched nit-pick and they don't seem to realize what Bamco JRPGs are like. JRPGs get a bad rep a lot of times because non JRPG fans on gaming sites do the reviews. They think Final Fantasy VII is the best JRPG to exist and try to use that as a Base for Role Playing Adventure games. It's honestly annoying. It's a big reason the (J)RPG industry died but thankfully it's making a comeback due to solo games getting good reviews recently so people are starting to enjoy stories and RPGs again.
Hi, I had a question about scarlet nexus. its is a jrpg, but do you level up and stuff in the game or its more in the style of devil may cry, where you buy skills with points when defeating enemies?
I do have to say the game starts very anime like. the combat carries the game till the story picks up, then both just make a for a fun and cool experience. I'm halfway down with the first campaign, but I'm just enjoying it and having a good time.
i think the only problems i could find with this game would be the writing and voice acting (both english and japanese) but otherwise it’s extremely good
I may very slow at getting through games compared to most people, but I finally got through the story on Yuitos' side. (Based on the demo, I played the entire game on Hard mode, and that was definitely the right choice.) Warning, long ass comment: First, the combat really is sublime. Some may look at the move list and wonder why you don't get a lot of new attacks for your main weapon, but the SAS menu is where the real meat and potatoes of combat can be found, and that DOES include more attacks where you use your allies to attack, and some cases where you do get new moves entirely like Hanabi's flamethrower. The strategy of combat feels incredible because your powers aren’t just one extra thing added. They have multiple properties both offensive and defensive. Tsugumi’s power might seem like it has no offense to it, but one of the first upgrades you get is an effect that makes counters with her power crack enemy armor instantly. Gemma’s gives you ways to set up attacks you wouldn’t have a window for normally. Kagero’s invisibility adds a unique charge attack to your move list that you can absolutely use as part of your combos, especially if you activate hypervelocity to slow time while you charge. The game does make good use of these powers too, they’re not just there as toys in a game where you could just hack through with your sword. Especially on hard mode, you NEED to be quick on the draw with your powers in some fights. The general flow of combat is finding a good approach to go in with and thinking on your feet to change strategies as your current powers run out and others recharge. The story is pretty zany and it definitely has a lot to say about our own interconnected world, particularly in some of the individual character scenes. Gemma’s absolutely surprised me, hitting on a topic I’m sure is seen in many contemporary countries, but is particularly an issue here in the States. It works a good bit like Xillia II wherein you switch back and forth between main story events and chilling out with side content in the spaces between (minus being in debt this time. XD ) My thoughts on the panel scenes are that they’re actually a good idea for handling scenes where the characters would mainly just be standing around talking (you know, like normal people). They do a good job focusing on expressions. Going back to Gemma’s story, there was one panel at the end of his where just his change in expression said SO much about how much he’d changed. I love the rest of the companions just as much too, especially Shiden, Luka and Kagero, not to mention I already love Kasane, and this isn’t even her side of the story yet. What about Yuito? Well I have to say, he got steadily more interesting as he started to get his bearings from being a fish out of water at the start and ended up being one of my favorites because of an exclusive scene in his story around chapter 10. He turned a trope I’ve seen many times in video game upside down in the best way and even made me laugh. XD Suffice it to say, he’s got more personal motivations then you’d expect at first glance. This game is absolutely a Tales game in Sci-fi mode and I love all of that. A scene partway into the story pretty much confirms this is a Tales game thanks to a running joke in the series. XD Some things in the story could be better, and I think side quests (which work like client orders in PSO2, or perhaps NGS would be more accurate as you can complete them remotely) should offer you memory items for customization instead of actual items as they rarely offered me anything I actually needed. Fortunately character quests comprise the bulk of side content. I’m always inclined to ask for more enemies to add to the mix as well, but I have to admit, the endgame fights felt pretty satisfying taking on powerful targets all at once and tearing them a new one because I had so many tricks at my disposal. I absolutely want more games and I’m glad I have a postgame and another playthrough yet to run. :)
Kasane's story has slightly less foreshadowing so most people are recommending you do her route first. I don't think it will massively affect your experience either way though, both routes have some pros and cons.
0:10 I didn't see it coming XD anyway between this, Azure translation last month, Rise, TWEWY Neo, Arise and the DP remakes we're going to have tons of new JRPGs
It's not automatically filled in (because they have different maps) but you get all the BP to level it up based on what the character's level is when it gets carried over.
Good review - game looks great, would you say starting a fresh playthrough on hard would be a good experience? As am very interested in this, but don't want combat that feels brainless, and as you put it, monotonous. Thanks
Scarlet Nexus is amazing. I bought the steam version full price and I have no regrets. Only problem is that the side quests are generic fetch quests or extermination quests, and they are lame. The main story sequence are the meat of the game and its spectular. 8.5 of 10 for me.
These monsters would be literally horrific irl of course, but in the context of the game I think they’re great. I saw red stilettoed feet on goat configured lower legs leading to long shapely thighs topped with a fully exposed bone-tail all under a sexy corset and topped with pretty flowers for a head and I had to see more. Fantastically insane.
It does but I think there are also limits to how high you can get the bond level based on where you are in the story. IE I don't think you can max bond levels in like Standby Phase 3, it seems like the invisible limits get lifted as you do more of their bond events (which are unlocked as you complete the story).
I love the concept and style, just.. not the combat or skill tree. It felt like I didn’t have any combos, despite how flashy it looks. I had light attacks that never changed, a back step attack, and the ability to throw stuff. It never really felt like the combat changed from that, every battle felt the same. Square, square, square, triangle, R2, repeat until enemy is dead.
Actually have to agree with this one. Combat is very shallow. There's almost no room for experimentation. It feels like Tales but without the complexity of the battle mechanics.
i love how more and more games have bonding events like fire emblem and persona, i just love that stuff because it makes the other characters so much more then just a NPC that is told to be a good friend of us, instead we really feel like becoming friends with them and understanding them
Games have had companion and romance events, affinity metres and quests for a long time, since the 80s. Both in Western and Japanese games. If you're only seeing it now, there's a lot of games you could look back on that you've missed.
Right, instead they get to be an npc with 2-3 surface level traits/interests that are wholly defining of their personality instead of just the one. Oh wowee cuntman is nice sumtimes when u get 2 know him i cannot believe this what a character development but wait there’s more he’s also bad at cooking LOL. this is my experience with most bonding systems
Looks very interesting! When I saw it for the 1st time I didn't care about it but this review is making me considering it. Looks a mix of Tales x Astral Chain 👍

You may want to reconsider. The combat is certainly satisfying, even if it was a bit repetitive, but everything else was horrible.
@@brahmantyoihsan5938 Really ?
@@enzocrespin5806 Yes, there are several major flaws within the game:
1. *The city feels dead and empty.* You can talk to some pedestrians or even obtain "side quests" from NPCs, but otherwise there's nothing else to do. *There's only one shop in the game, and it's handled by an NPC that doubles as a save station.*
2. *Boring "side quests"* that seem more like a challenge rather than an actual quest, like *"kill an enemy with this method"* or *"collect an item then return it to quest giver".*
3. *Poor NG+ design and replayability.* Imagine spending hours to get the best equipment for your team, only to find out *there's no level scaling in EX New Game (NG+) and everything dies in one hit.*
I would argue that the characters in the game are pretty bland with shallow development; the sort you always see in generic anime/manga series. But these things are subjective, so I'll leave it at that.
@@brahmantyoihsan5938 Thanks for your feedback. I'll pass. Maybe Tales of Arisen will do better.
@@brahmantyoihsan5938 Honestly, much of what you said doesn't really make the game sound all that horrible as your previous comment suggested. It just sounds like an unexceptional/average game at most.
I looked at several reviews for this game, this is the best one I've seen yet. Well done!
Just finished my first playthrough as Yuito. Definitely well worth the wait in my opinion, and I understand how you feel about immediately going back and trying out the other story. I'm glad they added a new game plus to make seeing the other story not as tedious. Definitely an Anime/10 story wise lol
I don’t go back tho I use two different saves when story is repetitive I skip I know they have different things in the story and luckily I know where the different things are because it’s easy to spot them
It's not often that a High quality Jrpg that isn't apart of a series hits the shelf.
oh my. someone who didn’t throw electronic music under one umbrella and knows dubstep is a branching genre on its own. a man of culture and excellent taste in music i see. lol
but great review, thank you. definitely plan on getting it- along with the games on my 100+ wish list 🤣
I can't even start the game. The title screen theme is so good. 🤣
Well it radiates Tales of + TWEWY vibes so it’s not like it was gonna be any less than quite good
The sole intro was the best review i have ever seen, it instantly convinced me to want to get the game lmao.
"Whatever the hell this is..." @ 12:40
Sounds a bit like Witch-house, but it's fucking dope!
I just started on Phase 9 in Scarlet Nexus and am enjoying it! I'm rocking 18 of it's Steam achievements and my Team Bond Level is 4!
Im playing from 2 days this game and im in totally love with this game, its so great and original, single bad thing sometimes can be the camera because its a lot of zoom out but in rest game its 10/10+
That intro representation alone makes this worth an immediate full-price buy! 😍
I wished Kodama had more screen time. Finished Yuito and started Kasane. Is it possible to max out all character bonds on the first play through?
Yes Kodama is a really interesting character
No you cant
@@giorgosnikolaou7219 damn, does regifting gifts work in increasingly bond level? I’m trying to max out bonds in my Ex Kasane play through before the final boss.

Only setting that gave me issues with camera on PC using mouse and keyboard was Camera Motion Blur, set if to Off because setting it to On will cause very weird jittery movement of the camera.
I really liked those cutscenes that almost look like a manga panel. I experienced them in Tales of Arise, just a quick way to get to know characters, their thoughts on the situation and shit like that.
Glad to see them back here haha!
I pre ordered this game and I'm loving every moment of it
The Guardian Edition was well worth the purchase. I can't wait to start playing it properly after work this weekend!
I wish I didn't have to work, I want to keep playing it. It's so good
So wait! Is it really that good?
@@Deviljho5 lol yes it's that good bro, I only played it for 33 minutes, and I had to go into work at 7pm tonight until 7am, and Scarlet nexus is all I'm thinking about.
@@Deviljho5 i've been playing for 25 hours now n I'm not reaching the end yet. Coz I love the combat so much tht I tend to forgot that I have story to end 😂
I finished the Yuito campaign without maxing the bond on 4 characters (they were all level 5 but I couldn't get them any higher) and I was weeping by the end of the credits.
Looks like a mix between Tales and Astral Chain, consider me intrigued. There's way too many good JRPGs for me to play now, I'll be busy for the rest of the year and then some.
@@somedopemojo43 hmmm legends of heroes will always be my 1st strong recommendation for anyone looking to play a new jrpg but since you are already playing it…..and you also already played yakuza 7 hmmmm have you tried atelier ryza? That’s a good one, nier replicant/automata? Persona 5 royal/strikers? The Ys series? Tokyo Xanadu? Valkyria chronicles? Specifically 1 and 4 (That one is a tactical jrpg), final fantasy 7 remake? Sakura of rice and ruin? Those are the ones I have in my collection and they’re all great. I have more games than that but you just said jrgps, hopefully I helped you out a little.

Brilliant review, mate. Quality content right here 👌
Which mouse and keyboard settings did you remap?
I am currently playing through Kasane's campaign first and I'm nearly finished it but I must say that this game is really amazing and a blast to play. I was pleasantly surprised how good this game is since I am a bit picky about my RPGs and especially JRPGs which this is definitely one of the better ones I have played in the last few years. I hope it will get a sequel or a spinoff since Scarlet Nexus has great franchise potential.
I've got a strong feeling this is gonna end up on underrated ps5 game lists in a couple years from now
Played it completely through and has to be one of my fav games brain field is so freaking satisfying
Just subbed finished the Demo for both characters, amazing combat, gameplay, story, gonna be getting this game soon, so excited to play the full game, loving everything so far! 🙌😃
The soundtrack is by far my favorite part of this game.
OMG! YS 9, Scarlet Nexus and Tales of Arise, I dont have enough time to play all of that in 2021
game is sick af, straight up. the most fun combat i've had all year
Just finished 100%-ing this game with a good 85 hours. So far, my game of the year until something else knocks me out of the park.
Haven't played a "Tales of" game, but with how many people are looking forward to it, and how good it looks, I'll definitely give Arise a try.
Normally I am not someone that needs reviews in order to buy or play a game but this month was a little packed for me with things I wanted to buy and play, also is my last long vacation until my last semester at university so I wanted to squeeze every minute of fun that I could in this two months.
However I was very sad to see that many reviewers that I respec disliked or hated the game, but your appreciation for the game as well as some bits of info that nedded clarification were the last bits of motivation that I nedded for buying the game and to be honest I am very glad I did, loving the game so far!.
p.s. Nice analogy at the beginning
I got 16 hours in. This game is a sleeper. Loving this game.
Sleeper as in it makes you sleep maybe.
Update on my Scarlet Nexus progression! I got all achievements on Scarlet Nexus making it my eighth official game on Steam to make my Perfect Games list as well as the third RPG to become part of my Perfect Games list with the first two RPGs being Cyberpunk 2077 and Outriders!
The Bayonetta style frame cutscenes seem odd coming from Bandai Namco. They implemented costumes in cutscenes with Tales of Zestiria and Berseria. Why is it different now? Different engine?
The costumes and accessories still appears on cutscenes
@@linkand0659 my thing is why not fully animate events instead of these still frames? I would understand if it’s sidemissions but why the main story too?
Did they blow their budget of Tales of Arise? Hope it’s good when it releases.
12 seconds in and you've already sold me on this game.
Wait.. How do you get different outfits for characters
I’m not really into jrpgs but I haven’t been able to stop playing this game I love it so much
Thinking about getting this when I finish Nier Replicant 1.2. Will this run well on a PS4?
I am loving it .I wonder what they’re going to do with expansions .
I'm halfway down with the first campaign, but I'm just enjoying it and having a good time.
i think the only problems i could find with this game would be the writing and voice acting (both english and japanese) but otherwise it’s extremely good
I'll watch the rest of this after I've finished the game. I'm sold lol
I may very slow at getting through games compared to most people, but I finally got through the story on Yuitos' side. (Based on the demo, I played the entire game on Hard mode, and that was definitely the right choice.) Warning, long ass comment:
First, the combat really is sublime.
I am going to start today, story wise where is better to start male prot or female prot? Thanks
Does anyone know if the skill tree carries over to the other character in New game plus
It's not automatically filled in (because they have different maps) but you get all the BP to level it up based on what the character's level is when it gets carried over.
@@JRPGGaming do you think that ruins progression for the 2nd character, if so, then would it be better to start a second character from scratch then?
They give you the option to not carry over the levels when you start EX New Game if you don't want it to be wildly overleveled and overpowered.
Good review - game looks great, would you say starting a fresh playthrough on hard would be a good experience?
As am very interested in this, but don't want combat that feels brainless, and as you put it, monotonous. Thanks
Damn this looks so good. I'm gonna check this out when I'm not so damn broke.
Scarlet Nexus is amazing. I bought the steam version full price and I have no regrets.
Only problem is that the side quests are generic fetch quests or extermination quests, and they are lame. The main story sequence are the meat of the game and its spectular. 8.5 of 10 for me.
Is this game fun as i never got chance play and it on sale now
These monsters would be literally horrific irl of course, but in the context of the game I think they’re great.
I saw red stilettoed feet on goat configured lower legs leading to long shapely thighs topped with a fully exposed bone-tail all under a sexy corset and topped with pretty flowers for a head and I had to see more. Fantastically insane.
Best review I have seen of this game, couldn't stand all the others since they're all talk, but they never really say anything meaningful.
Looks like Nier Automata meets Astral Chain. I like it! 😎👍
With a sprinkle of code vein
Thinking that maybe these skit like cutscenes could possibly be what the skits in Tales of Arise will end up being.
This game,as an anime/videogames lover,is really stunning and I am lovin’it,every minute of it.
if u give the same gift over and over does it still level up the bonding level?
It does but I think there are also limits to how high you can get the bond level based on where you are in the story. IE I don't think you can max bond levels in like Standby Phase 3, it seems like the invisible limits get lifted as you do more of their bond events (which are unlocked as you complete the story).
You can also increase a specific member(s) bond level by activating their SAS in battle more frequently
Got it on ps4, but damn I'd love to have it on switch.
Controller vibration is a vital part of this game. I can't imagine playing this game without a controller. Great review though.
Totally agreed! The Best japanese game this year
This intro is amazing.
That I agree. They got the right band to do it.

Still can't decide if to buy this first or Tales of Arise. Which one have the most "anime" vibe to it?
What are the trophies like? I Defo will be picking this up.
There all relative simple.
i love how more and more games have bonding events like fire emblem and persona, i just love that stuff because it makes the other characters so much more then just a NPC that is told to be a good friend of us, instead we really feel like becoming friends with them and understanding them
Games have had companion and romance events, affinity metres and quests for a long time, since the 80s.
