My fretting process is about the same as you. I do nip the tangs back and once the fret work is done I fill the slots on the side of fretboard with a mix of hide glue and ebony dust. A super clean look plus it reduces fret sprout if the guitar isn’t well kept. Nice work and I admire your nerve using spruce. A very difficult wood to keep flawless through the build cycle.

Thank you for watching. I don't often fill the ends with hide glue. Maybe I should try it again.

@user-mb4db2fd6e thank you, I'm glad you liked it. On this guitar, I used the StewMac medium fretwire.

I have watched several refret videos and visited seller of fretwire such as LMI and Stew-Mac. All the tutorials I've seen on the types of fretwire talk about electric, acoustic (steel), mandolin and pre-1960 acoustic but none recommend or specify fretwire specific to classical guitars. I want to learn to refret vintage clssicals but am stuck about which size I should choose. Can you help?

I usually use 0.080" fret wire on my classical guitars. I haven't refretted too many classicals, because the frets don't often wear out. Most of the classical guitars I have worked on have been built in the last 60 years and they generally have 0.080" wire. Very old instruments would probably have thinner frets. Your best bet would be to measure the frets then try to find replacement wire as close as possible to what you measure.

Thankyou your sharing. It is very practically helpful for fretting ! on guitar !
One question is... What kind (or type) of fret you are using for classical guitar ??
    THanks

I'm using medium gauge (0.080" wide) nickel silver fret wire from Stewart MacDonald.
      Thank you for watching.

Hi I need to know what is the Size of classical guitar frets ?
when I buy frets what should I say to the Seller and where to buy online ?
    Thanks

    • @zimnickiguitars311

0.080" wide and 0.040" tall seems to be the most common for classical guitar frets, but there are definitely exceptions. I have seen some very wide (0.125") frets, but not very often. The 0.080 material is considered " medium" gauge.

What kind of glue do you drop in those fret-ends? Wood glue or something else?

Thanks. You are correct, with the only exception being the tiny file I used to remove burrs from the edges. That one came from StewMac. I've had some of the other files for 40 years and really don't remember where I got them.

Ten minutes to install ). But without glue they`ll get back!

    • @zimnickiguitars311
      @zimnickiguitars311  3 роки тому

I have not found that to be the case. I rarely use glue yet I don't hear of frets popping out.
