- Part 1:
• Making a HUGE log spli...
With winter nearly here it’s time to do a bit more on the log splitter.
In this video I design and fabricate the head that slides up and down the log splitter.
That parts were drawn using Onshape, each part is then saved as a dxf and loaded into the Kutavar program ready to be cut out.
After the parts are cnc plasma cut out, they are cleaned up, the pin hole bored out using the boring head on the milling machine and then welded together.
Hope you enjoyed the video.
Thanks for watching. - Наука та технологія
Almost at 25,000 subscribers!! Thank you to everyone for watching my videos and subscribing! 😁
Well earned sir, you're a pleasure to watch
Just subscribed to help that push to 25k !
Almost is never good enough tho i almost had a 3 some was just short of 2 women 🤣🤣
and 1,000 + likes in 4 hours... on fire! Thanks for the video - should a good channel. Agree with the 'only so much tidying up you can do." 🙂
Well deserved matey! You earned each and everyone of us!
I just came here via a shout-out from Wes (Watch Wes Work). I've already watched 3 of your videos. You run a fun to watch channel.
I’m here from Wes as well! Great channel! Lots of wicked fab’ work and ALL the cool big boy tools!!
What a graet channel! Has my subscription for sure! Who else is here from Watch Wes Work?
“Only so much tidying up you can do before you start losing the will to live” … me 100% LOL
Looking good mate.
i enjoy watching your vids on a Sunday night here in New Zealand
"There's only so much tidying up you can do before you start losing the will to live"
Hahaha, so true.
Nice shout out for the channel from WATCH WES WORK
Thanks for working on your audio. So nice not to be listening to a softly spoken genius one minute and grinder at ear wax melting decibels the next. Top work. Keep it up 👍
I name this log splitter 'Titanic'. God bless her all that split with her!
Seriously though, that's a great project to hone your cad skills. Having extensively used a much smaller twin ram log splitter on a 6610, it's slow, and the oil gets pretty hot! I personally use a 34t Chinese built kinetic log splitter and have not found anything it wont split, even gnarly gum! 2-3 second cycle and tows behind the lawnmower. Take care. The bigger the splitter, the bigger the bang when a gnarly log eventually succumbs to such forces. Stand clear!
Yes Titanic or Olympic, they were sister ships , Olympic lasted for donkeys years and so will this splitter .
Watch Wes Work sent me. I’m always amazed at the quality and quantity of work done on these channels. Thanks for the content.
lolol, i fuckin hate tidying up with a passion....my thinking is, the time i waste tidying up i could be doing something more productive. Even tho stuff isn't in the right place, i always know where it is, so i can still lay my hands on it
might i suggest that next time you make slots for the tabs, design the slots in a dog bone style, slightly wider on the short sides and the tabs will fit in with minimal prep and as a bonus provide full weld penetration where the gaps are.
Great idea!
Your log splitter is looking great so far. "Big Log splitter" is a bit of an understatement, but it will be sturdy. Regards, Dave (Canada)

Also:
"That can be a problem for future me...
like Tomorrow.."
😂😂
“Future me” gets a hard life here too. 🏴
There might be a few more subs coming. Just watched watch wes work and he sending out some love to your channel. Keep ip the intersting work. Cheers.
700 come over already! 😁
I’m having a good day watching your videos. Watch Wes Work suggested you and I am glad he did
Looking really good, and strong. I think it could split trees as well as logs. The new plasma cutter done a good job with the parts, looking forward to part 3 whenever that may be. Keep safe and well mate 👍
Great video and a very well built splitter the only suggestion I would make after experience with various splitters would be to consider fitting telehandler nylon wear pad material as top and bottom parts of your sandwich for the sliding head otherwise metal to metal it’ll have a tendency to chew itself up pretty quickly and after a couple of passes any grease you put on to help gets wiped away by wood debris
Quality as ever, see you got a 'Plug' from 'Watch Wes Work' over in the USA. Excellent stuff.
Great beefy build on the log splitter 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🇨🇦
Dang this log splitter will split anything you can get on the table.
can't wait to see this bad boy in action!👍👍
Love this channel 🙏👍💪❤️
Your log splitter, is exactly what Milwaukee tools, says all the time.
" Nothing but heavy duty"
Handy garden size log splitter for my shed , just what I need . First job is to find a 2 ton RSJ
That new cnc machine has opened up a whole world of new concepts designs and the means to achieve it all! Nice one.
Regarding your triple welds - My pal used to say 'Not many things have failed due to being over engineered'.
Wes from Watch Wes Work recommended your channel. Awesome work, very goood videos.
Things are looking good, love that awesome new plasma. Laughed out loud at the "You can only do so much tidying up before you lose the will to live" Know the feeling LOL
Hello Oliver from the USA.....she is going to be a monster!!!! Excellent work. New cut out machine doing its job too!
4.1K+ 👍's up SBE thank you for sharing 😊
I reckon you'll split cars in half with that beast of a splitter 😜😜
The logs won't stand a chance, Can't wait to see it in action.
Good job Oliver … it’s coming along mate 😎👍🍺🍺
Great Job! I had no doubt that you were going to make it happen!
✌🤠🇺🇸
Great build Oliver it sure isn't going to fall apart. As they say on UA-cam nothing too strong ever fell apart.
I think that your Deere is going to be revving well to pump enough oil to cycle that ram at working rate! PTO pump and tank was my answer to this problem when I built my big splitter years ago, tractor sits at low revs and ram still cycles fast. Also don't skimp on table size like I did...... HTH
Looking forward to seeing next instalment. 👍
That is one industrial log splitter. More of a tree splitter. Once you get that new cutter dialed in it will save a lot of time and be a great asset. Nice to see your channel getting a shout out from Watch Wes Work. Avid viewer apparently. And another of my favourite channels that I have watched for years. You must be doing something right. Good varied content on interesting projects. Very enjoyable.
That's so well made I really love it. This gets a big like from me 👍
Thanks!
Another good vid, rapt from beginning to end and none of the usual "waffle".
Keep it up Ollie won't be long before you are up there.
Enjoyed this video very much. Thank you
I like all your videos
Farm equipment made to engineering spec always sign of a perfectionist . Going to be a few things that will need addressing i think Oliver but your the man to sort it ,
Wow! What size logs do you plan on splitting? You'd need a crane to lift the whole kit. Brilliant workmanship. Can't wait to see it split the size logs I'm imagining. Cheers...
Might have to put wheels on it!
@BrucePierson it needs tracks and it's own power-pack to move it my ranger would not like pulling that
You are building it Texas style,BIG.Way to go!
Great workmanship snowball 👍
Certainly take the skin off a rice pudding with that beast. Nice job so far. You will need wear plates. The friction on such a beam is huge in use. I have found that with my vertical post knocker repurposed from an old splitter. Just gravity drop of a concrete lump but it tended to jam on the winch up. Its all trial and error but good fun.
That’s not a log splitter it’s a tree splitter 😂. Great fabrication, I’d be well proud to have made that 👍
WWW sent me over here, so glad Wes did, awesome channel, your really over engineer your fab and that keeps everyone safe. Camarata did a short bit and the end of his video on finishing his roof. Some folks commented about how strong his welds were. To demo that, he ran a 1” bead then proceeded to lift massive ‘H’ and ‘I’ beams then picked up the front of his truck. Job done. Kindest regards from Bonnie Scotland. Joe.
Built to last! Thanks for the look, good work!
Well I spoke too soon ,I see you DID make the slide longer to the rear . Good Engineering 👍
Been following you for quite a bit and just saw Watch Wes Work give you a shout out! Keep up the great content.
Blimey, you'll be splitting giant redwoods with that thing. Its starting to look really good.
That new plasma table seems to be coming along well, just being able to drop dxf's into the software and then move them around must be a real boon. Same with a lot of these things now, it is the software that kills them or makes them. I'm always amazed by how much stuff there is around with rubbish software.
Can’t wait for part 3
Awesome work as always 👍
I watched Episode1 of log splitter like damn way back 4 or 5 months ago it seems like. After watching the 1st way back then and after like 2 weeks for everyday I would check in to see this here No.2 video. Super glad this came up on my feed today. Rock & Roll now. Hopefully if there is more videos on this splitter they come quick. Hopefully not in another 3 or 4 months when winter is over
That’s some splitter, u could split granite ! A handy piece of machinery to have, great job
Great build man, excellent job.
We used to have a 16T vertical splitter, which we used on the back of an old Fendt Favorit 611. It could split anything provided you had the strength to lift the wood. We eventually upgraded to a Komatsu mini digger with thumb to load it... Greatly enjoying your videos, thank you.
good show as usual . thanks for your time again.
Well done. New cnc table looks like it does a great job
I made one log spliter 5 years ago. I used plain bearings at connecting points in the cylinder and rod, to give better tolerances and so improving the life spam of seals in the cylinder.
You are making a Beast.
Great videos and progress on the log splitter.
That suicidal fly thing is freaky, I remember one time coming into fall at my old metal clad shop I bumped the corner and noticed a cpl flys fall out from behind the cladding at the ground and thought it was strange so I hit the siding again w my hand several more fell out, that got me wondering, long story short after many smacks with various smackers ended up with several thousand half awake (hibernating?) flys in pile, and now every year do a “fly check” of all my structures with cladding but have yet to find another flymagetton although did come across a lady bug Colony but not in the same magnitude and did my best to leave undisturbed once found. Any way love the channel and nice to see someone showing real fabrication challenges and solutions over the highly edited and “perfectly executed” projects on other channels. As you know not every customer can afford or wants the by the book repair. Keep the content flowing and I’ll keep 👍 and subscribing
When in doubt, go bigger … and bigger (LOL) … great start and clean work … love the channel and can’t wait to see it operate
Plasma CNC is a nice thing to have! Solid result - as always. Thanks!
Really enjoy your videos keep them coming thanks
I thought this must be a "back-burner" job, something you only do when you have time between paying jobs. Hope you can find the time to continue with it. When you make the "knife" on the end, it would be good if you make one that splits the log into six or eight pieces in one go, which will save a lot of time double handling the wood if it only split the log into two. I knew a woodcutter many decades ago who had one of these log splitters, but I can't remember how many pieces it split the log into in one go, but it might have been six? You could also make more than one "knife" with a different number of splitters to make different sized firewood.
It looks "farmer proof" to me, good to see you have done it that way as the end of ram seal is protected from damage by logs. Cheers, Jim in New Zealand.
Never engineer something when you can over-engineer it. Love it! :)
Great work!
It's looking good, can't wait to see it in action
Homem+inteligência+tecnologia= Trabalho perfeito. Parabéns! Mais um ótimo trabalho. Abraços do velho professor do Brasil.
Nice work your come a long way videos are so much better
Regards
SteveUK London
Thanks 👍
You do awesome work and videos.
I appreciate that!
top little job there Snow.👍👍👍👍👍
Great content as always, so looking forward to episode three and then seeing it working……. your a clever lad 😊😊😊😊
Great video as always Olly. Nice to see the new plasma at work also the Wolhaupter boring head they are marvellous tool I love useing them. Keep up the great work. Paul
I made a log splitter with a similar design, had some issues with the head sticking if the log it was splitting put uneven pressure on it. Worked great for straight cut logs, hit and miss for rough
Nice bit of work, being a miller I like to see the boring head in use.
Now thats a log splitter cant wait to see it in action!
2:13 that’s exactly what I did with my machine. Works perfect, no problems for over 12 years atm.
We could see you playing beek a boo behind the plasma cutter screen 😅! An honest video is always really appreciated by your viewers, because we're all human! 🤗👏👏👏
Just keeping an eye on pierce height and making sure the torch doesn’t drag 🤣
Watch Wes Work sent me over to your channel! Excellent job mate!
Thanks for coming
Give the pin a good grease fitting. If something bends then u can still get it out easily if it's gets some grease every now and then. I know from experience working on loading ramps that sit outside. When u have to get those out and they didn't see some grease every now and then you'll be cutting pins and/or even bushings becausr moisture got in there. Even if it's a BIG IF better safe then sorry
Spray some WD40 or duck oil on your plate that will stop material sticking to the plate on the pierce.also when cutting slots in the plate give it a straight lead about half the length of the cut from the centre of the slot and no lead out but over run the cut by 5mm
Thanks for the tips
Well done on the subs ,keep up the hard work (engineering) I hope you got a mate who’s a tree surgeon ,the last thing you need is more hard work 👍
25 k congratulations. Great progress my friend.
Thanks!
Great video 👍🏻
Nice job !!
I like the comment about how much tidying up a person can do before they start to lose their will to live. 😂😂
Wow that is a well over built log splitter that ram is massive just for splitting logs
The ram was £41 from a machinery sale that’s why it’s being used.
Good to see you getting to grips with the new plasma Olly. The first pins/bores I repaired for our tree equipment, I made the parts to size, soon learned thats not the best for buckets etc, now I always leave a bit more "wiggle" room !
I've built a couple of vertical splitters for cutting "rings" from our tree service work and I'm on with gathering parts for a big horizontal like yours now, but I'm putting the wedge on the ram and a couple of "wings" either side to catch the splits. I think this is the better way for a big splitter as there's less walking and handling, unless you're going to fit something like a box wedge on the end ?
Just watched a Watch Wes Work and you got a shout out on his channel!
If you put the nuts on the top side, the head end should stop the nut from spinning.
Well done on hitting 25k on this video.
Thank you for sharing 👍👍👍👍
After my friend got thrown 6’ by a 4’ chunk sling-shotting off the push plate of his splitter, I turned points on enough 1/2”x1/2” grade 5 bolts to generously apply to both his push plate and mine. We had both welded, in my case my friend’s initials and mine, as a sort of roughening texture but it was insufficient. The amount of security the points provide is constantly reassuring and boy do they ever grab. If one’s wood is always cut square the problem is not what it is with irregular chunks, particularly a somewhat curved 4 footer for his maple sugaring arch.
That things going to be a real animal . Nice job, can't wait to see it working . What tractor will it go on? With the right brackets could go on a digger to
One other thing the wedge should be shaped like a bell moreso with inter sloping sides, will make the wedge do most of the splitting work .
