      Also, this play was based on a book that was written in 2004, which was based somewhere in 2010-2015. That means that if the plot of the play was concurrent to the plot of the book then the characters would have been born anywhere from 1993-1998. Dunno if that makes any difference, but I do agree with the other guy here who pointed out that it mostly has to do with Jeremy and Michael specifically since they’re the ones who make most of the super dated references and there’s even a song about how they idolize outdated pop culture

    On the outdated language thing: the writers said that they used way out of date slang on purpose because if they used modern slang, it would just become outdated itself in a few years

      Amelia Simmons well the show was out in 2015, and it's currently 2017, so yes the show was still relevant a few years down the road from when it was written :)

      You can do what Joss Whedon does and make up your own slang. Then it will be timeless.

      I mean the show was made in 2015 and two years later it's one of the most popular shows on the internet right now? and it's just been licensed so other companies can make their own adaptations so yeah I'd say it's gonna be relevant in a few years

      What do you mean Christine never/doesn’t like him. During the party he and her actually geek out while the squip isn’t there and she only turns him down because she is feeling unsure about herself and what she wants to do in life. Christine and Jeremy have pretty nice chemistry when it is shown.

      But yeah, without using THAT wording, the song is about putting aside your own comfort to help the ones you love. That’s why Michael was involved in it too, and why the song explored his need to help Jeremy as a friend even after Jeremy treated him like a piece of garbage.

    Self-acceptance is the entire point of this musical. The Squip represents peer pressure and the desire to conform, and when it goes away, only then does Jeremy find happiness. "Voices in My Head" is about this as well; the "voices" are also representative of peer pressure. Jeremy says the "the loudest [voice] is [his]", showing that he is going to be his own person and not give in to what others expect of him.
    Sorry for the wall of text. I just really like this musical.

    Idk but I like to think that Jeremy references older things because he just has older tastes. I guess you could say it makes him “more of a loser” because he isn’t “down with the kids”. I’m not trying to say there’s anything wrong with liking older stuff but I think that’s why Jeremy talks like that. And we know Michael likes retro stuff so maybe that’s why they’re friends.
    Also, I think in Voice’s In My Head Christine says yes because she thinks she’ll give him a try, see how it goes. It might end up that after they’ve gone out for lunch she might like him more because she’s got to know him, and even if she doesn’t like him romantically she still says yeah because going for lunch with Jeremy gives her a chance to get to know him as friends too and she might gain a good friend out of the experience.

    • @kerrit609
      @kerrit609 7 років тому +24

      yeah I agree about jeremy using out of date slang because of his tastes and it highlights how he doesn't fit in with the kids at school, when he's got the squip he uses way more up to date slang and in the original version of be more chill pt 1 the squip says he's only allowed to use squip approved vernacular

    The pants song is one of my favorite songs in the entire I feel like it is actually really Important to the plot. It's the
    Point where Jeramy's dad finally starts to take control of his son and if he didn't go and talk to Micheal he wouldn't have saved the day, he would still be in his room crying and burning stuff.

    • @kerrit609
      @kerrit609 7 років тому +4

    As a girl who listens to BMC, I don't need a female in the show to relate to, just because I'm female doesn't mean I can only relate to females. Plus, from my experience the girls in BMC are a pretty good representation of teen girls now, most gossip a lot, but others (Christine) don't.

    • @outeremissary4438
      @outeremissary4438 7 років тому +49

      You know, I never felt like the girls in my high school were like that. Maybe it was a small school peculiarity, but those chicks were an obnoxious minority. Even girls who had the appearance of the Hollywood Teen™ didn't really confirm behaviorally to the expectations. I don't judge this show too harshly because it's a comedy that doesn't take itself seriously and overloads its script with cliches and outdated slang for the lulz (I hope), but it has always frustrated me how often this type of girl is written as the "normal" teenage girl. Normal teenage girls to me were really athletic and had a tendency to stay in the music program, if I had to try to pin them down. Tried really hard at most things and were very organized. Worried about clothes and makeup.
      Prooooobably worth noting that the name attached to my dicking around email was completely made up by me in tenth grade and that I am actually a girl.
      So yeah, Audrey's random outpouring of thoughts that's not quite a response to your comment, end. Enjoy your night/day/temporal location.

    I thought the dialogue was supposed to be outdated ? To show how "uncool" Jeremy and Michael are, and it fits since they both have an obsession with the 80s. I had a phase where I absolutely adored the Beatles (still do ngl) and I was googling stuff about their hometown Liverpool, and I picked up some of their slang because of it. That's why I thought they were using dated dialogue for Jeremy and Michael because no other character seems to talk in the same fashion. Yea that's my 2 cents thanks for coming to my ted talk

    Love your video as always and I agree with everything but the pants song I think wants to show that his father cared enough for him to get up and help him because he noticed that he seemed to not be doing great and I guess they want to show that if you have people who love you and support you,you can get through everything.This book was generally intended as a metaphor for the author's psychological problems and stuff and to show that everything was going to be okay.Nevertheless,not disagreeing that without it nothing would have changed and not saying that it was the most inspiring show ever.

      yeah the pants song works a million times better in the audio boot than in the soundtrack because you have the whole scene with michael burning all his memories with jeremy, to me the important part of that song is mr heere convincing michael to try to help jeremy again because that's the thing that actually saves the day, literally the only thing mr heere does after this song is show up at the hopsital wearing pants after everythings already been fixed so yeah, even though the songs focus is on mr heere it's way more important for michael

    Honestly, every point your making is what makes this musical a guilty pleasure for me now. When I heard it entirely twice or so I was completely adoring fan mode but now, it's just something I listen to so I can feel better or have something to pick me up cause it's extremely goofy and dumb with the lyrics a lot of the time. Especially with the nonsense Joe Iconis thinks kids say(or whoever the lyricist is) and boy is it dated since I think the book it's based on was trying to write 2015 lingo 2005 although I've never read it. I just like it when I need something dumb but generic and kinda fun instrumentals. And I'm a sucker for George Salazar for many a reason. It's just a weird thing with a lot of issues that burrowed into my chest cavity

    Okay. So, the pants song actually is for characterization of Michael and Jeremy's Dad cuz it shows how Michael normally is, his sadness, even his loyalty to Jeremy as a friend while with his dad (Despite wishing he would indeed put some pants on) it shows his concern for Jeremy and he realizes that he can't make a difference in Jeremy's actions right now because he isn't really a father to his son but he knows who can (hence Michael) and he decides to actually try to become a better person. Or something like that. Idk I'm just a stranger on the internet :|

Also it added a bit more comedy (not that the show needed it at all) to the “crucial” moment in the show.

    10:44 I generally feel like the pants song is one of the most underrated songs on the album. this is because this song is all about how Jeremy's dad finally starts paying attention to Jeremy's well being. this is the song where he realizes that Jeremy needs a father figure in his life. so, he decides to finally become a better dad for Jeremy. unfortunately, he doesn't know how to do this on his own which is why he asks Micheal to help him. the only reason why it is called the pants song is because it is a metaphor as to how Jeremy's dad doesn't wear pants like EVER. it says in the song, "when you love somebody you put your pants on for them" because its trying to show how his dad is trying to be brave and help out his son.

    joe tracz’s words on why they changed the ending:
    “Great question! The book leaves things open ended, but musicals come with a very different set of expectations, and we knew we wanted something that offered a clearer resolution. We also knew we wanted to push the science fiction elements further, and create a climax that paid off everyone's character arcs, not just Jeremy. So from there we came up with the idea of the Squip taking over the play!”

    Saw it yesterday. My husband and I are both senior citizens and we loved it. It is satire! Music is catchy, voices are fantastic. It also IS retro. As an older person, I recognized the Cell phone song was straight out of Bye Bye Birdie, which also had a phone song. There were the requisite generic high school kids.. that's why one laughed so hard at Christine, signing up for the play. DRAMA QUEEN. I never noticed the sexist "stuff" probably because it seemed to come right out of MY high school experience; Which probably is why I'm a strong feminist now. But I still loved it.. as satire! Music went viral, because it is so much damned fun and catchy. I think it will head to Broadway soon. Most fiction is not like real life, or it would be boring.. It might even become a classic. Everyone, no matter what age can recognize the characters.. and relate.

    I didn’t like the ending either, because it implies that he became friends with the “popular kids” as well, and in the book he was just back where he started, with just micheal- and the squip was actually TRYING to help him as well. it’s just that the only way you can become popular or get people to like you is to be yourself, and if they don’t like that then there’s nothing you can do.

    Great video and really good points, just wanted to say one thing about a comment with "Dead Gay Son" from Heathers. Many writers like to add a funny and normally unnecessary song at the beginning of Act 2 in order to slowly transition the audience back into the world of the show. To me, a great example would be the new Frozen musical which I saw while in Denver, which has a hilarious Act 2 opener, but literally did 0% to the plot except for a costume change for Anna.

      Oh, and with "Shine A Light" also built off of the same aspect, but provided Heather with the tune for when she tried to take the pills. They just wanted the reprise to be familiar and dramatic. Of course, with both of these arguments, these were just my interpretations of them, and I could be totally wrong.

    The Pants Song is there because pants are often symbolic of who's in control of the family, and up until that point in the show, Mr. Heere had just sat back and let Jeremy do whatever he wanted. Him putting on pants shows that he's taking charge and being more active in their relationship. Although I do agree that this whole arc could easily have been left out. It would certainly make it seem less out of place.

It would make sense to put songs like that (but not really) in a show like Dear Evan Hansen where the audience is seeing things from both the perspectives of the high schoolers and adults. Heathers and Be More Chill are pretty much only about high schoolers so it doesn't make a lot of sense to add those songs.

I personally think the ending in the book is lazy and cliche and I really like the ending of the musical. Joe Iconis also said in an interview that voices in my head was a good ending because they wanted to normalize the fact that it's ok to have irrational thoughts as long as you make good decisions in the end. Also about what you kept saying about the cheesy dialogue. It's like that because it's based on the 2004 novel and the show itself is very quirky and is supposed to have a quirky vibe.

    I've read the book and I agree with you about the ending. I definitely liked the book ending more, even though I get why they changed it to make it more climactic.

    I honesty don’t like the ending of the book and I think Christine like Jeremy from when they first met, but she didn’t like him when he had the SQUIP. Let me explain......
    Ok, When Christine first met Jeremy, she kinda liked him but was afraid to ask him out. When she first met Jake she liked him too but she didn’t want him to be her boyfriend necessarily, or she liked him too but was afraid to ask him to go out.
    When Jeremy got the SQUIP, she started to realize that something was wrong with him. She didn’t like the “New Jeremy”. So she chose Jake over him. So that’s why at the Halloween party, she said no to going out with Jeremy.
    So now this all makes since why she said yes at the end because Jeremy was back to his regular self.
    This is just a theory. It might not be true but this is just in my opinion.

    ok so, one of the things that bothers me the most even though it really shouldn't is that one of the creators said squips were related to sony somehow after an instagram question they got
    so, when rich says that you can use the squip as a control for video games, it irks me
    because rich says right before the controller statement that he has an xbox, but since squips are related to sony technology wouldn't it make more sense for rich to have a playstation since then the technology would be connected?

      I think he means like how they can control your body, like how Jeremy's Squip taught his hands the combination for Rich's locker.

    The outdated dialogue thing is probably to show how Jeremy and Michael are really into retro and old-school stuff, but I’m really not sure lmao.
    Also, the video game thing might be to make it seem more personal between Michael and Jeremy? Like...we don’t know the actual game but they do? I don’t know how to explain it, but...hey.

    Well, Jeremy DID already like theater in the musical I think. He just didn’t want to sign up because he’s afraid of being called gay. Christine is just the thing that makes it “worth it”.
