I know this was two years ago but each song is about anxiety! Milk/ Expired: The anxiety of death, the pressure to leave a legacy and no one remembering you or your life Bread/ Artisanal: The anxiety of impressions and what other people think of you. Paper towels/ Mess: The anxiety of how fast something bad can happen and how long it takes to fix if you do at all. Oatmeal/ Mon-Sun: The anxiety of choosing wasting your life with routine or having things devolve into chaos. Coffee/ Need: The anxiety of accidentally becoming addicted. Cheese/ Grief: The anxiety of choosing, and also the five stages of grief!
I know these all seem wierd but they're actually social commentary with underlying meanings like the coffee video was "need" which was focused on addiction while the bread was on how society views us. If you are more interested in it the people in the comment section of these videos go into it with way more detail.
All the other people in the videos represent the items he’s getting, the hair of the old woman is like the top of the milk. The milk meant “Live your life to the fullest” and the bread meant “Don’t let titles show you how to live your life” and so on.
Yeah it is weird I didn't really know that the people look like the thing the guy wants to buy or at least glares at it's definitely a super cool thought
Love y’all’s reviews of Jack’s stuff! I am such a massive fan of both this series, and Opal. After rewatching each 5 million times, and showing them to anyone in my life who can take the weirdness, I’ve now found myself watching strangers watch it for the first time 😂 Couple of things, just my opinion: - in the oatmeal episode, he said “he’s going to pick something different” and then she said “oh, no, he picked oatmeal after all!” But he DID pick something different - the “mystery flavor” small box. That was his compromise. I will explain why this is so significant further down. - Also, the main character is absolutely, 500% NOT an extremist - all of the characters he meets are. In fact, the main guy is whatever the _opposite_ of an extremist is: can’t ever make up his own mind. Each person he meets, he mentally “tries on” what it would be like to live with that character’s life philosophy. From each encounter, he takes a _portion_ of their worldview, whatever portion is helpful to him, and weaves it into his own philosophy. None of the other characters have that level of nuance or greyscale thinking - _they’re_ the extremists. At the beginning, he is like them: the extreme, logical conclusion of analysis paralysis. But through each encounter, he looks through the window into a radically different way of life, and takes what is useful. The songs are him hashing out what parts of their philosophies to keep, and his final selection at the end is his verdict on which aspects he did keep. So doubling back to the mystery oatmeal - him getting the small box with a mystery flavor is him deciding NOT to eat oatmeal for every meal/“oatmeal job” etc. Instead, he’s adopting a small amount of routine, leaving room for adaption as per the song (“Routineless, I adapt to chaos faster, no master”) - AND getting the mystery flavor is him actually inviting the unexpected into his routine. Oatmeal Man was imprisoned by routine. Main guy instead decides to adopts a level of routine that works for _him_. - another thing, which I didn’t notice until my 4th watch: the people look weird because they ARE those items! Go look again. Bread guy is not only wrinkly, but he has a weird lite ponytail - that’s the scrunched plastic tip of the bread bag. Coffee lady has a square face (mug), huge ears (handle), and stray hairs (steam). Paper towel man even has a perforated line down the side of his face, if you look closely enough! Anyways, I’m not fully done watching, so I may add more thoughts, but loving the video!! Also Jack Stauber is a literal genius.
Everything about this series is perfect. I love how the items he buys go around the problems those people have. Milk dies: Take a new one Paper Towel gets diposed of, creating more mess: Buys a nondisposable one getting rid of more mess than it creates. High class bread makes you feel better than you actually are: Buys Wowza, a cheap brand. Oatmeal strips you into a bland dayly routine with nothing new happening: Buys a mystery flavoured oat meal with a random flavour, representing the uncertainty of life. Coffee makes you addicted: Buys decaf. Cheese has too many kinds, so it becomes impossible to find the perfect one just for you: Buys a random one, accepts that thinking about your cheese preference too long is unnecessary and time wasting and learns that he can get better, learning from his mistakes. This shows that most artists like Jack Stauber let you interpret every little thing in their works and I think this attention to detail is priceless.
I thought you guys were understanding it at the end xd, then you totally missed it, but i guess some people understand these things from experience XD. So let me Break it down for you : Bread = Possessions/Wealth/Lifestyle, Milk = The Life you live, Papertowel = Mess of Life, Coffee = Addiction, Cheese = Your Options in Life, Oatmeal = How your Daily life is. and near the end where he has to choose cheese is what he finds most hard, it is a meaning for choosing your path in life, and people go through the 5 stages of grief trying to find ways they can make their life better, so he chooses to let the "Universe" choose for him. but then when he realizes HE has the choice to make a better choice for his cheese (his life), he finally understands that the reason it's so hard for him to live life (choose groceries/make decisions 1:19 ) is because he tries to live by a *"Routine"* and *"Depends"* on things to live *(coffee)* so he decides to choose for himself and live life the way he wants, thus making his decision making skills much better
Milk: ya know that lady I'm pretty sure it means she was expired cause she disappeared Bread: it's about how people view you Paper towel: he's overthinking about mess Oatmeal: over planning the unexpected also the guys head looks like oatmeal Coffee: addiction she also has forgotten her kid Cheese: you can't make a decision and five stages of grief Five stages of grief: Denial: This this can't brie Anger: You Goulda been kidding me Bargaining: If I act better could someone else select my cheddar? Depression: Are these bleus permanent? Acceptance: I'll be okay I'll let the universe sayy.. Trust?: I could've picked something better
Each of the items on the list are aspects of people’s lives and they have meaning behind them. Like the oatmeal scene isn’t about oatmeal but no matter how much you try to plan ahead there are unexpected situations that happen in life. So just live it instead of trying to map it to some unrealistic expectation.
I never really thought of Jack stauber as a good musician, not because he isn't but if not because I never listened to his songs. Adult swim a while ago uploaded opal, and the clay and weird 80s Vhs style intrigued me, now I'm actually aware of his good taste for weird beats and bent vocals. Now I actually like his style, I'm not a huge fan but Yes I do enjoy his videos now!
his ability of clear cut meaning conveyance makes his song writing super valuable i think especially when the stuff he writes about it is often so important
So far only thing that made me mad was “Stow-ber” and not “Staw-ber”, also I watch Shop: A Pop Opera, on long car rides all the time :D (same with Opal)

A pop opera is differently one of his more comedic things. But though those songs can be seen as goofy, there's definitely some commentary to it
