    The Lego Movie understood its audience more than most. It's all in the details; the real registry numbers from the kits, Benny and his aesthetic being a callback to the first Lego Space set from the 80's, and even the blink and you'll miss it Bionicle reference.

      I love that movies make people realize stuff like this. Batman. BAT-MAN like if you had never heard of comics and super heroes. A dude walks in an says we should do a detective story. But what if he was dressed as a bat. A bat, which is basically a flying rat. Would really say that its gonna influence media and story telling for decades?!?! Yet, it happened and has had a huge influence on cinema(and arguably the world). It's silly to think about, but that the magic of these stories they can make wild ideas work if done right.

      They're also behind the 21 Jump Street reboot, and I suspect that's how they got Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill to voice Superman and Green Lantern, respectively - probably literally took them from the movie lot to a recording studio one day to record their lines. Maybe it was even something like "ADR for 22JS in the morning, and after lunch break lines for the Lego Movie".
      This is what I choose to believe, at least.

    The most impressive thing to me was how they used real pieces for almost everything. Playing the lego games when I was younger, there were a lot of scenes that were not fully "lego". Like the floors and other materials were generic. Like a muddy floor texture to represent a jungle floor. They didn't have the iconic studs LEGO on them. The movie had these pretty much everywhere I can think of. Imagine rendering all of those pieces. Impressive

    • @billbill6094
      @billbill6094 Місяць тому +16

      Nah stylized animation was always a thing, it was Hollywood that said you know what, everything has to be photoreal cg animation now. Spiderverse just showed people actually putting care and passion into animation actually bleeds through the screen, when you let artjsts approach things artistically it turns out you get art, and people love art.

    • @JessAnderson1988
      @JessAnderson1988 Місяць тому +7

      Not quite, gotta go back a little further than that. The very unique stylized animation trend really started with the 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series, which rejected soft round shapes and realisom for very angular designs & hand painted textures. Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs and Hotel Transylvania introduced extreme cartoony squash & stretch animation, Paperman continued CG animation with a hand painted textured look, Feast was groundbreaking for it's flat cell shaded 3D look, The Lego Movie brought in the CG stop motion style, The Peanuts Movie kinda had a stop motion look with how it successfully mimicked the old 2D Peanuts animated style, and the Kung Fu Panda Trilogy brought in very stylized lighting and incredible action sequences. Spiderverse was just the first to combine all of that into one movie, and it introduced the comic book style to 3D animation.

    @femoman Місяць тому +30

    It was in fact, CGI done seamlessly to look like stop motion. They scanned thousands of actual LEGO bricks to make the assets, right down to the plastic textures including chips, smudges and cracks on pieces. They then animated them in the style of stop motion Brickfilms (the official term for Lego stopmotion), sticking mostly to the same constraints that actual bricks face (as opposed to other CGI Lego projects where the characters and bricks have much more flexibility, since theyre meant to be seen as people, not as LEGO pieces). And at least in this film, all the effects were also bricks too, like smoke, clouds, lasers, magic, etc (in later LEGO movies they changed some of this, most likely to save time and money a bit)

    • @JakeTheLateCreates
      @JakeTheLateCreates 22 дні тому

      This movie NEEDED everything to be brick built because of the plot. It’s the mental projection of a kid playing with an actual brick-built city, so it makes sense he sees everything as brick. In ninjago, it’s more of a blend.

    This movie is digitally stop-motion animated. Basically, the studio got full access to LEGO’s archives, which includes hi-res scans of EVERY LEGO PART. they took those scans and basically made a program that allows you to build anything out of digital LEGO bricks and animate it. I know there’s several more steps, but the main take-away is that the show-runners wanted to make sure everything in the movie could actually be built out of LEGO.

      Interesting; I remember "inventing" that couch as a kid too, and also not having friends. I get how it's sad, but also, very sweet how our soul, through imagination, "compensates" what we can see in the reality we inhabit.

    It's insane how good LEGO Movie is. It had no business being such a banger. And what's even crazier is that LEGO Batman and LEGO Movie 2 are also both top tier. I highly recommend watching both.

    16:42, I _swear_ they took a bit of inspiration from one of the early lego video games. Once you beat "Island Xtreme Stunts" you get access to a vehicle that transforms between a plane, a car, and a speedboat. Spent so much time with that thing as a kid!

    The Lego Batman Movie is a spin-off to the Lego Movie and there’s also a Lego Movie 2, a Lego Ninjago movie, and a Unikitty show made by Cartoon Network. There’s also a bunch of references in the movie too like the “Magic Portal” the kid uses to send Emmet back to his world is a reference to a Lego stop-motion short film called “The Magic Portal”.

    I love how both LEGO Movies have surprisingly deep themes about the real life ways people play with LEGO.
    The first movie is fundamentally about the disagreement between people who like to follow the instructions and display their sets on a shelf, and the people who like to mix all their sets together in a tub and build their own wacky made-up stuff, and the moral is that both ways are valid and we should respect the dedication and creativity of everyone.
    The sequel delves into how people outgrow LEGO and move past it as they grow older, but that you should never lose sight of the fun you had and how it shaped your imagination and inventiveness, just because your interests might move on to something else.
    I would argue this is why these movies were as culturally impactful as they were, despite being obvious cash grabs. Not just because of the unique animation or the memes. Because these movies tap into some universal experiences people had as kids with this amazing toy, and really explores them in a deep and thematically meaningful way.

    The detail in this movie is insane. It's CGI, but every actual LEGO piece you see in the movie is a real piece you could use to recreate what you are seeing in the film. It's absolutely wild the detail they went through to make everything so fluid and true. 2:33 the dots on the brown hair and the fuse lines where the plastic comes together is all in there too.. It's so freaking detailed.
    Edit: No way did he look up something during the movie and know that real life scenes were in the movie. lol

    For some reason when the second movie came out, they made a 10 hour long ad of the "This song is going to get stuck inside your head" song on loop. I don't know why, but I watched the whole thing... it wasn't in english by the end.
