1:54 this one frame was chilling to me. Somehow just seeing opal as not some sort of misshapen, clay, hey Arnold looking creature really made the true horror of this film sink in. It already terrified me that people have actually had to go through this but seeing opal as a real, human looking person was just unnerving.
2:40 Aswell. It cuts deeper realizing that there’s someone who’s life is animated in this video.
8:43 for me, seeing it as a toddler/baby's leg really made it sink in for me.
I think her head normally looks like because shes being starved and neglected
i think opal is misshapped is because she is malnutritioned as she is the one that take cares of the family and no one takes care of her

9:48 During the mom's song, which I'm pretty sure was the dad trying to get away from the mom while she's in a drunk state but instead gets caught and attacked with the bottle, leading to the dad focusing on reshaping his face to look like what it used to before the bottle destroyed his face.

3:37 - 3:43 As someone who went through similar neglect growing up, 3:37 is the only clip that I feel accurately portrayed the malnutrition that Claire was suffering from, and also the messiness and garbage just felt real. My heart cried for her in that moment

I heard someone else mention that the dad is the one Claire is most comfortable with, as in the original animation she watched her dad's little show with normal eyes, but watched her grandpa's and mom's show with fear in her eyes. Her dad is a rather nice guy deep down, he just happens to suffer from severe self-image issues and implied abuse from his wife.
There's something sweet, but kinda tragic, about the fact that Claire sees what her dad actually looks like, but doesn't seem bothered by his appearance.
Hes self absorbed, lets her starve, and allows her to live in fear with her drinking drug addict mother. Poeple like him arent scary. Because he *ignores* her. The mom going through another crazy spell? Clare will get to it.
Also, the cheery voice he has on sounds fake, with those dark under voices. She knows theres no safety with him. Thats why she runs away. I know this is a longer comment, but I hate when I see people defending the father here lol
@sopapillacheesecake8813 Thats the thing, blaming things that happened in the past, on why you neglect, doesnt make the neglect any more real. He is JUST as evil as everyone else to her. From casually insulting her, to keeping her in the same house as the person who disfigured him, to pounding on her door at the end. She doesnt feel safe with any of them.

@@ShinOpaque You're right, he isn't a good parent, but I'd argue that he's the lesser of 3 evils, or maybe tied with the grandpa for Lesser Shitbag. He does make passive agressive comments towards Claire's, but uses no physical violence and makes no threats as the mom does and doesn't chase her through the house like the grandpa does.
The father is totally most likely neglectful and a bystander to Claire's terrible situation, but Claire doesn't fear he'll outright harm her. She totally feels safest with him.
She doesn't run from him. She runs from the grandfather, who was chasing her.
Whoever animated at 2:12 looks so similar to the real thing! Great job everyone!

How is it possible to make the dad's deformed face in that freeze frame near the end twice more horrifying than it already was? And those cold, dead eyes at 11:36 coupled with what they're singing about makes me almost physically ill.

The original moment was already quite spectacular, but I have to agree, that freeze frame at about 11:09 is the stuff true nightmares are born from. Was looking forward to it, and it did not disappoint

8:36 makes her seem so much more human, she seems like a real person. I’m not sure how to explain it.
I can see it; compared to the other shots of her and the other family members, she has a more human-like face.
I found it jarring at first, but it kind of makes sense to think that she was once someone who wasn't... like this.

I love the animators style at 11:37 , it’s so ominous and creepy yet calming and welcoming.
You’ve gotta admit, no matter how goofy most of the scenes are, the little boop Opal gets during the final reprise is a little heart-breaking.

The person who did 8:37 and 9:41 was my favorite, it just made the mother so much more human to me and it was honestly heartbreaking, I felt the hurt in her expression because unlike the others she seems the most self aware of her awful mistreatment of Claire while still slipping into her delusions
Agreed. Honestly, it did also make her more attractive, but I'm not sure whether that enhances it or not.

Me to honestly I know people like that mother. Yes there's a monster but buried somewhere is someone who once actually cared someone who deep down feels immense guilt and pain. I know not every person like the mother was once good but that animator honestly captured that feeling
To give her some credit she's not that bad meby if she stop drinking she kod have a Redemption ark father as well
I don’t think she’s the most self-aware of her mistreatment of Opal as she treats her, she abuses Opal the most, there’s no “self-aware” tier list, especially when she’s too busy with making sure she appeals to Opal to get what she wants. I think he’s think that’s why Jack made her so deformed and putrid, because she’s inhumane, without integrity, and painfully in denial. I’d interpret that making of her looking more human is to illustrate human desperation and how dirty even someone that looks like a human can be.
Maybe I’m projecting, as that was my parents’ dynamic; my mom was the leader in the mistreatment, but she didn’t look like it, and she was far from self-aware, she used me to be both her little radio and her mirror, a therapist she could berate and then confide in, refusing her mistreatment with statements like “I feel so awful tha-I just feel so awful…” Deluding herself until she could take her anger out on me. And while my dad tried to help, he was too wrapped up in his worries and problems. Though, it’s kinda hard not to project on such a relatable story, so I think there’s less parallels to “self-awareness,” it shows “self-pity.” Her looking human there has nothing to do with awareness, in my eyes, it just deepens her depravity.
The weird thing about Opal.
You can interpret the story at face value, and it still works. Like, if you think about it like it’s own of those old “moral” stories. The ones where a kid disobeys their parents, and the universe decides to be extremely cruel to them for some reason.

@@Danny-wb5uyin the original, the father's face is often shown through the mirrors. The only moment where it's directly shown to us is in the split second when the mirror turns to reveal Claire's face, at the end of the short.

I absolutely love this recreation, the film was already touching. But now with 110 creators in this whole remaking of the film. You not only get to see the perspective of one man that created it, but now we see it from the perspective of all these creators. The different styles all put together in one video just feels beautiful on a different level. This take on Jack Stauber’s film was just one of many examples of how inspiring seeing many different peoples work. I honestly hope this gets more attention, because it’s what it deserves. :]
I love seeing animation collabs, you not only see the many beautiful different styles of animation/art, you see how each artist interprets the original content. All beautiful and very well done!

Fun fact: My scene at 7:09 is an MS Paint reimagining of the original scene, as MS Paint animations were one of Jack's signature styles, which was quite absent in the original Opal. Still, great short film.

yo everyone who worked on this is awesome, but i have to shoutout 2:12, it literally looks like the shot in opal but in HD, much fucking props to whoever did that bit
8:12 and 11:40 are my absolute favorites AAA but everyone did a really great job!!!
Opal means a lot more than it looks on the surface and I'm sad I didn't get to have a part since this is one of my favorite things that Jack stauber came up with keep up the good work!
