  • How should you position your hands when setting a high ball and what should you teach your athletes? This video answers it all.
    The most commom mistake is to have your thumbs sticking out and I am explaining exactly why that is.

    In my school i see a lot of players pointing there thumbs up and absorbing the ball before releasing it and always results in a perfect set. I'm personally trying to practice this kind of set since it seems more accurate then just pushing the ball out.

    • @charmedcharmed3511
      @charmedcharmed3511 10 місяців тому

      I see what you mean and I have seen players doing the "absorbing the ball" when setting. To me, it borderlines a carry. And that extra couple seconds makes a difference when playing at competitive levels where you want your hitters to beat the block. Personally, I vow for "quick releasing" of the ball and am aiming to perfect that. My problem is the angling of the setters, still trying to give a "waterfall" feel instead of a rainbow. Good luck!

      @Mglol685 3 місяці тому +1

      @@charmedcharmed3511 what does waterfall feel and rainbow feel mean

    • @charmedcharmed3511
      @charmedcharmed3511 3 місяці тому

      @Mglol685 I was talking about the trajectory of the ball after release. “Waterfall” means it reaches a higher peak and falls, which is the point of attack for the hitter. “Rainbow” has a lower arch and peak and the hitter attacks at its peak. Hope it's clear.

    when i set the ball , i feel like im doing more effort to make the ball go higher and i hear a voice from my hands when it hits the ball . but when i see others doing it they do less effort and the ball goes higher and feels like they only touched the ball softly , is the reason that i may be sticking my thumbs up? even though im not sure if im sticking them up but i will make sure, maybe this is the reason

    Hi! Volleyball is my favorite thing in the world. I started playing in 6th grade and have only been playing a few years. I am a setter and take it very seriously. In seventh grade I tried out for club and played a 14 team even though I was 12. My coach was extremely mean. Sometimes she would shove me if I wasn't in the right spot. The only good thing that came from her was that she pushed me into being a much more skilled setter. She caused me to develop really bad anxiety. Some girls on the team even quit volleyball because of her. Now I sometimes get panic attacks even though my school coach was really nice. Now that is over I have no coaching. I practice at home for a couple hours 6 days a week. Since I have no one to really coach me, if I mess up I have no idea what I did wrong. Sometimes I break down crying and hyperventilating. Club is almost here and I'm doing pre- tryout Clinics.Every time I go to my club I start hyperventilating and it effects my setting. Please help thank you

      The fact that she is mean might just mean that she wants you to get better. If she wouldnt tell you what you do wrong you wouldnt get better! Have you seen the "not beeing afraid of making mistakes" on this channel? It may help! Good luck for the future

    • @JumpVolleyball

      +Jessica Lynn That is a very unfortunate situation. It is a very old way of coaching. Back in the days, that's how coaches thought they could get their players to do what they wanted them to do.
      In my opinion, the results are always better when the player decides to change something and when the players themselves initiate the change. To do that, a coach needs to guide the players in the right direction. Coaches should create a safe environment for players in which they can fail and learn. Failing is necessary to learn and get better. If your coach is always on your back punishing you for every mistake, you will not learn much and no wonder you develop anxiety.
      My tip for you is to think about what mistakes mean to you? Why are you so afraid of making them? Realize that mistakes = learning and repeat it in your head every time you make one. Soon enough you will flip this thing over and gain your confidence back. You have to embrace making mistakes and fail forward faster!! There is nothing wrong with missing, it's the proof you are on the right path.
      Keep it up, you have the passion and everything! Take a big breath and dive in! Have a great volleyball year in 2016 and a very Merry Christmas!

    What are the different hand signals used by the setters during play?

    • @JumpVolleyball
      @JumpVolleyball  8 років тому +3

      +Janssen Saez Thanks for watch Janssen and your question is a very good one. I am writing this down as a topic for a future video bu typically, setters will use a combination of signals for sets such as the 51, the 31, the 61, the step around, pipe, c-ball, fast ball to the outside, etc. If you are not familiar with these terms, it is normal, we don't all use the same names for sets and this reminds me I should do a video about that one too ;-)

    First of all thank you for those great videos :)
    I've always had one question about setting. In which exact moment am I supposed to set the ball?
    Whenever I watch good players/setters set a ball, it seems as if they wait for the ball to contact their hands and let them slightly bend by it using the flexibility of their wrists before they actually release (applying deliberate force to the ball that drives it out of the hands) it. So I was wondering if it is really that simple. Should I just wait for the ball to contact my hands with my thumbs/wrists slightly turned inward and release it as soon as I feel the contact? If I do so, I can definitly feel my wrists flexing kind of naturally. But it feels a bit weird and is hard to controll. Maybe just because it is new to me, who knows?
    I hope you understand my issue. An answer would be most appreciated :)
    Thank you !

      It’s kind of a technique used by some setters, but yea that’s pretty much what you do when the ball comes I let it dive down *not too much or it’s a carry* and then exert the ball with my elbow back up. It lets you get a better grip and position the ball better for more control

      think of ur hands like a spring. i let my wrist flex back a bit. just becareful tho, you can get called for a carry if your release is too late.
