Hey, I just wanted to leave a comment that you made my day by stopping and waiting for that man to ride through. You have inspired me. As a bit younger rider (30yo) I would probably went over those bushes rahter than stopped. Patience is something I admire and I try to learn. I have the 520 setup as my commuter with full mud guards, rack on the rear. It’s super comfortable, it’s heavy but it feels absolutely bombproof. It’s all in all excellent.
I actually do have a Super Carbon Gravelbike but I've seen a few of these Tribans around on the road or in our volunteer DIY bike repair shop and they always get special attention from me cause they really are great do it all bikes with very good price/performance. I always cheer for people who have one. They look pretty good, too, imo.
This is one of the best videos I've seen in a while. Calm and informative, no crazy edits, and although I am not interested in this particular bike but in a different "quite cheap" one, I did watched the entire video because it's so nice to listen to you mate. I absolutely subscribe from now on :)
I have my over a year without any hiccups. I have two sets of wheels for it. One setup is 32mm on 50mm carbon rim.The other wheels is the original rim as a tubeless setup with 38mm gravel tires. This is a perfect beginner/ commuter / gravel bike. I upgrades the disk brakes to ultegra rotors, next project will be the crank upgrade for lighter cranks. Is fun to play around with this bicycle
I’ve got the gravel version of this, 4000 miles deep, and I love it. Cheap & reliable bike, that I mainly use on the road... but if I wanted to, could take it off road.
5000 miles now, and she’s still working nicely. If anyone’s thinking about buying one, I recommend. Especially for your first middle ground gravel bike (I use it for road mostly, with the ability to go off-road)
Have an RC520 after seeing your initial review and Ive done some upgrades to suit more gravel/winter , still got the original wheels so useful to know folding tyres go on better,I've changed the bars for more flared and upgraded wheels to fulcrum racing 5s with maxxis rambler tyres , I was able to get 700x38s on with no issues with clearance,worth noting if you do change the wheels you may have to change the discs to but overall I'm impressed with it ,super comfortable,I feel you can go on for miles on it,It has an awefull lot to offer especially at the price , lovely versatile machine so well done Decathlon
I removed mine with great difficulty! I ended up using a flat head screwdriver and damaged the wheel in the process. This is why I changed the wheels as I couldn’t risk that happening again on the road. Sadly, it’s the one thing that lets down an otherwise great bike, but I guess that’s due to them being tubeless rims.
Holy squid! Thank you for your video. I’ve been having a rough time choosing what bike to purchase that wouldn’t break the bank. I saw this bike being recommended by Bikeradar, and looks interesting, just the right specs of what I’ve been looking for, and your video was just what I needed to see to make my choice. The price is just a bit above what I wanted to spend, but it’s a great deal compared to everything else with less specs. Then again bike prices are ridiculously high nowadays, and I need to put my old 33lbs myb to rest. Thank you once again.
Hi, I also enjoy this bike, I bought it in February 2021. Very satisfied, but I wanted to have the Shimano 105 gearbox and I changed the original one. I also put an 11-speed chain 105. The bike makes all the money for my rides. The longest 202 km. Have good roads, I wish you good health!
That was great. Just picked up a new RC520 Gravel. From what the shop said, new wheels have sold the old problems. Mine came with some paint problem ( they said it on the eshop ), so a £240 discount and reduction in paint warranty from 2 years to 1 year. When I picked it up in the shop, the paint is as perfect as a non-2nd version ( the problem as noted was a 2nd layer of matt black paint not adhering to the underlying finished green paint properly in the 2-tone paint scheme. But the guy in the shop said it was the 4th of these 2nds to come in with perfect paint. "Just don't put a 1000psi power washer on it" ). Now have to get some lights - yours look great. huge demand for tyres world wide shortage and other parts so retailers manufacturers waiting on some components to finish off there bikes the demand is incredible,, loving it seeing all the bikes out and about puts a smile on my face

Thanks, Nick. Someone that bought one as a result of this review has just completed his first 100 mile ride. A fairly new cyclist he averaged 13.8mph with 4213’ of climbing, so it’s a serious bike.

I've had my RC520 since 2018. Absolutely amazing bike and great spec for the price. I upgraded the cassette and crank to 105 spec and run Schwalbe Durano plus tyres. Suits me for my daily commute and for training. In many ways I prefer it over my more expensive carbon framed road bikes.
Hey Andy, hope this message finds you well. I want to ask, what cassette did you go for the shimano 105 11/34 11 or 12? I want to do the same upgrade but dont know the compatibilities
I have got Triban RC 120, because that was what I could afford. I got a mudguard for it. I absolutely love it. Only problem is riding in traffic here is very very risky. Long rides in high roads are the best times. I have been riding it for just more than an year now...
It's good to hear that you love the bike. And the brand has moved from one we buy because that's all we can afford to one people see as providing both quality and value. Sadly, traffic is getting worse and I do feel we are putting our lives on the line to some extent, just venturing out on a bike.
Thanks for the video. I also use my rc520 as my preferred steed. I carried 35kg of luggage 350miles from Devon to Norfolk this summer. Bike was perfect. Compared to my carbon summer bike, I am about 2mph slower at the same power even on the flat. I therefore prefer to use the Triban for solo rides or poor weather rides. Ps. 35 mm tyres do fit with mudguards.
I sold my aero carbon rim brake bike for this which is 2kg heaver. But putting on a set of aero wheelset it still performs quite well. I might be slower on average but I still managed to get some PB even on climbs when weight matters and keep up with cyclists on fancier carbon frames. The name Triban on the frame does not bother me at all. I sacrificed the lighter frame for a versatile bike that I can also use for bikepacking with wider tires
Well I now can say that 700 x 32 Conti Contact Plus is probably the limit for mudguards that use the brake bridge or secure to the hole in the forks, they just miss the tyre. Probably best to go for the rubber bracket type guards that fit to the rear stays and forks blades, if you’re going for tyres wider than 32. And if you like a rear facing light that attaches to the seat stays by way of a bracket, you’ll have issues with their square shape as I found out today 😂
Great informative review Roy. One of my rides is a Btwin gfaf 520 and a steal at £879 a few years ago. Sram hydro Rival groupset, mavic wheels, carbon fibre forks & fizik saddle. Decathlon make very good value and high spec bikes that would cost more than double if buying from a rival brand
After watching the RC500 on Gravel - through the Wheelers At Large uploads - I opted for the 500 and have not been disappointed. Well put together, and great value for money. I was a bit cynical about buying Online, but everything has been fine. Got some good pre-purchase advice too, re: size, and various options - I'll be looking to go tubeless/gravel tyre, once the OEM have worn out. Now I know... I will be looking at getting the 520 in the future, for road trim, and have the 5 for gravel, and day-to-day work. I was originally going to go for a Substance V2, but they're taking so long to come back into stock, I gave in, and went for the Triban. I fully recommend them!
Good to know. I’m just about to upgrade my wheels to some Fulcrum Rapid Red 650 B that I picked up at a bargain price. I can’t get the mudguards on with 38mm 700c, but they should be okay with the 27.5 wheel. As I keep saying - a lot of bike for the money 👍
I changed them immediately as they were an unknown quantity for me and I was planning a century ride, so fitted Gatorskins. I gave the OE tyres to a friend and they are still going strong, but he isn’t a regular rider. Hopefully the OE tyres will be easier to change than the Gators, but Decathlon do recommend a folding tyre as it should fit easier. I also discarded the free lights and the OE saddle. The lights because they were cheap and nasty and the saddle change was due to me having a preferred long ride saddle - the Selle Italia Manflow. I am now using the cheaper Sport Flow and don’t notice any difference on 100+ plus mile rides.
@@RideWithRoy Yeah I wanted to change them aswell immediately to Continental Grand Prix (have a new 28mm pair here). But I may give the OEM tires (Triban Protect 700X28) a chance. I also have some new Schwalbe CX Comp 35mm tires here. So much tires to choose from, haha. I heard the gatorskins have a bad rolling friction?

Hi Roy, I really like your videos...!!! I'm also a big bicycles fan...!!! Let me told you a little advice for to have a cleaner handlebar, you could place the headlamp hanging from the handlebars, rather than the weight being on top. This gives you more room to see the trail/route, easier adjustment, and less "play" in the headlamp's adjustment system. I did it once, and now it's my standar setup =) Happy 2022

I am looking to buy the 520 Subcompact, which is the gravel version and since they are very similar, specially the frame, it is the same, it gave me a great idea of what i might get. I haven’t looked at the differences, Alex, but maybe the gearing is different on the gravel version, whereas the 520 with the 105 is more road geared. I would imagine the frame is the same and you can add wider tyres. Having now experienced tubeless tyres, I would recommend fitting to your new bike, especially as the wheels come tubeless ready.
Hi, I've got an RC520 and the earlier 520 flat bar. out well over 20,000km on the bikes on mixes surfaces and through winters. The common problem with both has been spokes pulling through the rear rim. Decathlon did replace under warranty but I have since upgraded to CX branded wheels which has made the problem go away. other than that the bikes have just had routine maintenance new chains cassette and bottom bracket. All in all great value bikes
It’s still relevant, Martin 😀 I’m not aware of anything that comes close to it for value for money. I’ve also been told by a new owner that his wheels seem a lot better.
...Great info Roy. I was looking at the Ribble CGR AL e to compliment my 2007 Dawes Horizon, that has Shimano Alivio 8 speed triple, that I affectionally called"Dawsey"! (purchased it new).😄 Have always wanted to own a road bike so was looking at the RC520, and will keep it light and use Dawsey for the heavy lifting! I have one of the new winter edition RC520s, bought to replace a Triban 540 that is still going strong after almost 20000 miles but winter commuting on rough rural roads would really benefit from disc brakes and tyres wider than 25mm (tried 28s but they rubbed against the mudguard)) hence opting for the RC520. So far 9 days riding has seen over 400 miles clocked up, the only problem being 1 puncture - I can report the Hutchinson Sector 32 tyres (standard on winter edition) go on and off quite easily, even at the side of a dark lane at 6am, I will soon be switching to tubeless.
It would be worth asking customer services for info on what stock is coming in. They are usually very helpful but if you can’t get any assistance just let me know.

I have put over 20,000 km on my Triban RC 520 and it's still going strong. 3 major off's causing a bit of cosmetic damage but asides from that it's been pretty much bomb proof.
Looks a nice bike, I probably should have got that instead of my tifosi ck7, looks better speced than the tifosi, it cost more and is tiagra rather than 105, and I do like the trp hybrid brakes have them on my genesis gravel bike.
I have a Gitaine ali bike with carbon forks 9 gear cassette at the rear and three cogs at the front (centre) . I have worn the gears out and been replacing them. Nobody could supply the same three fron cogs, I tried the net and lots of shops. I was in decathlon so asked the question they also could not help. But the lad serving me went off to their second hand department and came back with an old bike that had what I needed and it was in very good condition. He stripped it off and sold it to me for 30€ . So my old bike is up and running again, I was surprised that they destroyed a bike to help me out but very pleased. Perhaps the part exchange was of low value.

This is a great video! I think about getting myself a proper modern roadbike as my vintage bike is fun but it's a bit too large and uncomfortable (campa super record f Moser). This seems like it will get me a lot of fun for a relatively small price.
I swapped out the cassette, and removed the inner plastic on the rims to help get the tyres off :)... Other than that I'm 2 years in and nothing else done. My biggest issue is my own ride position despite having 2 professional fits :(

I am in France and can only do short distance (health) but I am at 2000km this year. I only do the road. a bit heavy but the same as my old one from 1991 so it's ok lol Tire grip (original) is little average and eager to change, they make a lot of noise. I find that the fork and handlebars filter the vibrations very badly I had to put a second layer of bar tape to regain the comfort of my old 1991 mbk. I am at 6.5 bars (6mini / 8max) but the roads at home are. .. bad annoyed by the rear fork, my heels are hitting it, I am a size 47 in shoes. but very good value for money in the end nothing really problematic
My upcoming video should be of interest regarding handlebar vibration. Thankfully, the latest models are well kitted out with thick bar tape. With regard to your heel hitting the cranks. Are you clipped in? I had that same problem so just moved my cleats inboard of the shoe which moved my foot out and cured the rubbing.
@@RideWithRoy The bar tape is thick (bought in March). I use simple toe clips (normal shoes because they are more practical for me). In order not to rub, I have to put my heels on the outside, it's okay but not very comfortable over time. It's just due to the shape of the rear fork.
@@RideWithRoy the 28 base are with crampons so noisy, as soon as worn I put slick tires that I have left. I am close to the (geographical) center of France (fields, flat, with unmaintained roads where the only repair is to put gravel ... so road even rougher and uncomfortable and here slippery xD)
Nice info , I saw the cassette wasn’t 105 , thinking about buying one as a tourer wheels concerned me as well thought they looked a cheep , I may look for a used one maybe even a flat bar one . . Decathlon have surprised me there products overall are good .
Yes, cassette is microshift but when it was worn I changed it for 105. I don’t notice any difference. Yes, the wheels are the weakest link but perfectly okay to start with. They were my first upgrade but still a bargain bike.

Hi, first of all thanks for your video and i'm sorry for my english, i'm french and trying to improve it :/ I've an RC500 for a week now and I love it! But i was wondering what tire to use... for the moment i'm riding on road only, but where i live there is a lot of dirt road like on your video ( 7:53 for exemple) and i don't really take them with the stock tire. Let's say that i want to ride on 90% road and 10% dirt like that, what would be my best option? Something like your schwalbe marathon or gatorskin? I don't know if that's relevant or not, but i'm a total beginner, and for the moment I start slowly with 15-25km ride with nearly no elevation (200 meters each time, more or less). And in a long term plan, i'm more interested with long distance than maximum elevation or speed. Can it be a good idea to have, if money allows it, a second full set of wheel + brake disk + tire + cassette, one for 100% road and one if i plan to use ~10-20% of dirt road? Or an schwalbe marathon for exemple is clearly enought even on 100% road and there is no need to spend that much on a second wheel set? Thanks in advance ;)
Thank you, Anthony. I have a house in 87190, which we are in the process of selling. France is my favourite country for cycling. I do try to add French subtitles to my videos but haven’t had time lately, so I’m pleased you are learning English. My ride ratio is similar to yours at 80% road. I use 35mm Marathons which work well for me on both surfaces. On my new Tempest Titanium bike I use Schwalbe G1 Allround tyres in tubeless, which also work very well. I’m not sure if the RC500 is tubeless ready, but if it is I would recommend trying tubeless. Your preferred style of riding is the same as mine. I prefer long distances at a steady pace where I can admire the scenery. I remember being a beginner and feeling the thrill of reaching a new distance record. @@RideWithRoy Thank you! I don't really have any problems to understand english on a video, without subtitle. It's when i have to speak ou write it that it become harder^^ As far as i know, RC500 and 520 are "exactly" the same, with the exception of the sora group instead of 105, and mechanical disk brake instead of hybrid. But i've got a 105 front derailleur (R7000), not really know if it was supposed to be, because in the specs on decathlon it's a sora R3000 listed. It is tubeles ready, i'll keep these 2 in mind :)
Regarding tubeless. I found it extremely difficult to get the tyres off the Triban wheels so going tubeless should help avoid having to repair a puncture on the road.
Thanks! The carrier is the Tortec Ultralight and I normally use SKS Bluemels mudguards. I’m pleased with both although the SKS mudguards are hard work to fit the first time.

I also have a house in 87190, which I’ve not been able to visit for over a year, but hoping to go soon. France is my favourite country to ride in as the French seem (mostly) respectful of cyclists.

I started the video and paused to think a bit. WHAT could go wrong with that bike after 4k, i thought to myself. Ive seen some reviews and opinions, have an idea what gear is on it. 4k km could be month or years, depending on the user. And, i think that the bike is as brand new if it was serviced somewhat regulary, and not abused. If it was abused, i would say it doesnt looke brand new, but could still feel like it. Now to watch the video....

Great video once again. I just bought the RC520 as my first road bike after watching your video and reading some of the reviews online. Its a lovely bike but after my first 25 mile ride with it, I found my neck starting to get quite sore midway through the ride.Is this normal or do you think its because of my lack of familiarity with the seating position (i'm new to drop bars)? I had my seat adjusted when I went to pick up my bike so don't think thats the culprit.
Thank you 👍 If you are happy the frame size is correct and your saddle height and fore/aft position is right, you might want to consider saddle tilt. I know THE LAW says we must have our seats perfectly level, but I find that a slight nose up tilt helps my comfort. The other thing to try, if you haven’t already, is to turn over your stem to give a slight upward angle. The benefit of drop bars is the range of hand positions they allow. On any ride I am moving between these positions regularly, as well as lifting off the saddle, which relieves hand, shoulder and sit bone pressure. I hope that one or a combination of these will help you.
Hii.I got Rc120 and faced similar issues..for a first time people we will face problems like back pain ,neck and legs etc ..in some days it will be ok..but we need to check the saddle height ,frame size are set correctly..

It is difficult to find in Canada at this time, as is the case with most bike manufacturers. If given the choice between a 2021 Trek aluminum frame built with Shimano 105 and the 2021Triban RC520 would you still choose the Triban? I realize there is a significant price difference between the two brands but sometimes price is reflective of Brand Name and not quality. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Don, I don’t know the Trek model but know they make great bikes. It’s mainly about components with me, so if the spec is the same and you are happy with the price, then I would say it’s just down to availability. If both were available, and knowing what I know now, I would still go for the Triban, as I can’t see any point in paying more for the same group of components. It would check with Decathlon Customer Services for upcoming availability. They’ll probably tell you to tick the webpage box to be informed about availability, but I didn’t accept that and got the list you see on the page. Good luck whichever way you go.
Drop bars are an inherited feature of the gravel bike’s evolution from road bikes, whereas a mountain bike derived version will have flat bars. It can be argued that flat bars give more control, while drop bars provide multiple hand positions. As a gravel bike will often be used on the road, which in my case is 80%, drop bars provide an aerodynamic advantage as well. Of course, it down to personal preference and the time you will spend on gravel.

Hello there I can see you are using mtb clipless pedals with some extra platforms I just wanted to ask what would you suggest are better for beginners just getting started on cleats road type shimano spd pedals or MTB ones that you are using for say 3-4 hrs ride.
I used to use the SPD SL ‘road type’ but moved over to the SPD ‘MTB’ type. Unless you are a serious rider looking for every ounce of power then I would always recommend the MTB type. Thank you Albert, that’s very kind. I had a quick look at the Ribble site and while the headline price is similar, the specification isn’t. Before I purchased the Triban RC520 I did extensive research and couldn’t find anything with the Shimano 105 groupset for anywhere near the price. I ride 80:20 Tarmac:Tracks, so the 105 suits me. However, if you will do a great amount off road and/or lots of climbing then the lower gearing of the SRAM groupset of the basic Ribble may suit you better. My recommendation is to decide on the type of riding you will do and then make a side by side comparison of the specification. Personally, I don’t like bikes for road use that have suspension, as this adds weight and also soaks up energy on climbs. A decent wide tyre will soak up bumps alone. The wheels that come with the Triban are perfectly adequate and are tubeless ready, but I’m upgrading them this weekend (video in production). The already high end spec of the RC520, for a great value price, means that such upgrades are cost effective and allow you to customise the bike. Hi Roy, I’ve just placed an order for the Grvl 520 by Triban and wondered if you had any experience/opinion of that bike? In comparison to the Canondale Topstone 4. I’m not sure fair with the different specs so not sure which is the highest quality on paper. Any advice would be really well received! Thank you
Hi, Ryan, thanks for the question. I am familer with the Triban RC520, which I upgraded to a gravel spec. The model you are looking at is the gravel ready spec, so no real difference. I’m not familiar with the Cannondale, but checking out the spec I can see two main differences. The Triban has a two ring front chainring as opposed to the Topstone’s single front chainring. The Topstone is nice and simple as it doesn’t need a front derailleur, but a couple of friends find the space between gears of a 1x makes it difficult to find a good gear for road riding. The Triban, using Shimano 105 front and rear derailleurs and brake levers, provides every gear you will need. I would suggest eventually upgrading the cassette to a Shimano 11/34, but that’s a cheap and easy upgrade if you find you’d like a bit easier climbing. The Microshift cassette is the same make as that on the Topstone 4 and works perfectly well. I personally always choose the 105 groupset as it gives me every gear I need for road or gravel. The big difference is that the Topstone uses mechanically operated disk brakes, whereas the Triban is a cable operated hydraulic system. This gives noticeably improved braking efficiency and I would never choose manually operated brakes. In my opinion, while the Triban doesn’t have the same sexy name that the Cannondale does, it is a far superior specification. I rode my longest ride of 155 miles on the heavily laden Triban RC 520 and it was no problem. I hope that helps.

It’s my first foray into gravel biking and I’ll be using it mainly for recreational use and a bit of bike packing so I as long as it has the gear ratio to get my up the hills around Huddersfield, I’m not too fussed about setting any records. I certainly won’t be racing anyone or anything! 😂. Is it a huge cost to move to a 105 groupset in the future if I ever wanted to upgrade? Again, thank you for the detailed explanation, it’s really helpful. I was going to cancel the order in favour of picking up the Topstone 4 but that’s only because of the name I think!
Yes, that’s what most people get sucked into. As your requirement is getting up hills, that groupset is probably best in any case. Although we have hills in this area, they are nothing like you have. Personally, I wouldn’t even think about changing to 105 as it probably wouldn’t suit your extreme climbing needs anyway. The main benefit will be those hydraulic brakes, because what goes up….. I am about to fit my mudguards with 36mm tyres so I’ll let you know once done, but looking at the clearance I can’t see a problem. I doubt you’d get 40mm tyres on even without mudguards. Thanks for the question, Jaydolf. I have no experience of this but have seen QR to thru axle conversion kits. I have no idea if these are reliable, but they seen cheap enough to give it a try. If you do, please come back and tell us if it worked.
Great Video. This is the kind of detailed review I was looking for. Thank you. You mentioned about upgrading your cassette from 11/32 to Shimano 11/34. I am also wondering about the same. My Question is that would you need to modify/upgrade rear derailleur or will the existing Shimano 105 R7000 be able to handle 11/34? Also would you recommend going with longer chain?
Thanks, Amey. No, my 11/34 just fitted with the same chain and derailleur. It needed a slight adjustment of the screw that moves the jockey wheel away from the 34 ring, but that is really simple. Feel free to email me if you need any detailed info, my address is in ‘About’. The 34 doesn’t make a huge difference but still a help on steep climbs.
The new R7000 can go up to 11-36 according to internet forums. That's why I'll upgrade my road bike from an old Ultegra 6600 to the new 105 R7000 for Alps riding. Shimano is always very conservative with their specs but in reality a larger cassette fits with some fiddeling at the limiter screws.
Is it true that they are on the small side, as in go one size bigger than you'd do on other brands? I'm 1.86 so that puts me almost between the L and the XL, but at the local Decathlon they only have the smaller frames so I haven't been able to see how an L or XL would fit me to order on line.
I think you have mentioned previously in a video Roy, what tyres do you opt for on a Triban? I'm looking for something more knobbly/hardy for the UK autumn/winter!
I’ve just swapped over the Marathons from my Ribble to the Triban. I did find these quite skittish in wet conditions but seem okay for what I do on the Triban. It remains to be seen how they do in the winter, although I felt some of the problems were caused by the Ribble being electric. The Ribble now has a new pair of Continental Contact Plus. Reviews suggest these provide a better grip and have the same puncture resistant qualities as the Marathons. I do find them a very hard ride without much feel, but I’ll forego that for a puncture free and grippy winter. I’ll feedback again once I try them in winter condition.
amazing video, I have the bike but the front disc brakes cannot seem to adjust properly, whenever Im on the bike the rub against the pads. Decathlon, tied to fix it but still the problem persists. I am not heavy at all, 77 Kg. Any advice?
Thanks, Mohamad. It’s a bit worrying that Decathlon can’t fix it! If the disc is not bent, all I can suggest is that you take the calliper apart, give it a good clean and make sure the pistons are fully pushed in (use a plastic tyre lever). I made this video on a different brake calliper but it will be the same principle ua-cam.com/video/c9vn-I4BQrU/v-deo.html. If you don’t have an alignment tool a thin piece of card can be used. I really hope this helps.

I have 35 mm Marathons on, Chris, but no space for mudguards. I shall have to go back to my 28mm for winter. However, I’ve just ordered some 650B Fulcrum Rapid Red wheels, from Merlin, for another project, so may use these on the Triban over winter.
None at all, Nick, and I do give it some rough treatment. If anything mine seem too free, although the adjustment is correct. Might be worth slackening it off a bit to see of that helps. As you probably know, the bearings are easy enough to get to for checking.

It’s sometimes easier to say ‘good road’ as then you say it less often 😂 I have a house in Haute-Vienne so cycle in France a lot. My experience is that the French fix potholes before they become a problem. And, annoyingly, we pay less than half of the local taxes we pay on our smaller house in the UK.
Looks like a good bike for the money. What width Marathons are you running and what's the maximum width you can fit? As far as the cassette is concerned I'd do exactly the same as you. It would a straight switch out for a Shimano 105 as soon as the MocroShift was done. Nice review.
They are the 35mm switched from my Ribble and had done 3500 miles. Decathlon state that a 36mm is max. I think you could get away with up to 37mm, depending on the tyre brand, but would run the risk of clogging between the tyre and frame.
I’m surprised you found the Marathons easier to fit than the Gatorskins. I’ve always found the exact opposite. I have the rim braked Triban 520 road bike. A bit heavy but it’s been a great bike, it was my commuting bike and is now my winter steed.
These tyres had done 3500 miles on the Ribble, Trevor, so had slackened up. Otherwise I’m sure they would have been just as bad, although they didn’t become superglued to the rim like the Gators did. As per the advice given, I shall replace with the folding variety next time.
This is the exact kind of content I was looking for. All well and good seeing a website rate it highly after they spent a couple of days with it but way more interesting to hear long term, high mile reviews.

I have the 520 setup as my commuter with full mud guards, rack on the rear. It’s super comfortable, it’s heavy but it feels absolutely bombproof. It’s all in all excellent.

I just damaged the rear wheel on mine, Gabriel, so it’s forced me into the planned replacement.
I actually do have a Super Carbon Gravelbike but I've seen a few of these Tribans around on the road or in our volunteer DIY bike repair shop and they always get special attention from me cause they really are great do it all bikes with very good price/performance. I always cheer for people who have one. They look pretty good, too, imo.

I have my over a year without any hiccups. I have two sets of wheels for it. One setup is 32mm on 50mm carbon rim.The other wheels is the original rim as a tubeless setup with 38mm gravel tires. This is a perfect beginner/ commuter / gravel bike. I upgrades the disk brakes to ultegra rotors, next project will be the crank upgrade for lighter cranks. Is fun to play around with this bicycle
I’ve got the gravel version of this, 4000 miles deep, and I love it. Cheap & reliable bike, that I mainly use on the road... but if I wanted to, could take it off road.
5000 miles now, and she’s still working nicely. If anyone’s thinking about buying one, I recommend. Especially for your first middle ground gravel bike (I use it for road mostly, with the ability to go off-road)
Have an RC520 after seeing your initial review and Ive done some upgrades to suit more gravel/winter , still got the original wheels so useful to know folding tyres go on better,I've changed the bars for more flared and upgraded wheels to fulcrum racing 5s with maxxis rambler tyres , I was able to get 700x38s on with no issues with clearance,worth noting if you do change the wheels you may have to change the discs to but overall I'm impressed with it ,super comfortable,I feel you can go on for miles on it,It has an awefull lot to offer especially at the price , lovely versatile machine so well done Decathlon

Hi, how did you remove the original tyre? I can’t even get the rear off to fix a puncture!
I removed mine with great difficulty! I ended up using a flat head screwdriver and damaged the wheel in the process. This is why I changed the wheels as I couldn’t risk that happening again on the road. Sadly, it’s the one thing that lets down an otherwise great bike, but I guess that’s due to them being tubeless rims.

I saw this bike being recommended by Bikeradar, and looks interesting, just the right specs of what I’ve been looking for, and your video was just what I needed to see to make my choice. The price is just a bit above what I wanted to spend, but it’s a great deal compared to everything else with less specs. Then again bike prices are ridiculously high nowadays, and I need to put my old 33lbs myb to rest. Thank you once again.
Hi, I also enjoy this bike, I bought it in February 2021. Very satisfied, but I wanted to have the Shimano 105 gearbox and I changed the original one. I also put an 11-speed chain 105. The bike makes all the money for my rides. The longest 202 km.

That's some great distance. I now have the 105 11/34 which has helped on hills. I've also changed the wheels.
That was great. Just picked up a new RC520 Gravel. From what the shop said, new wheels have sold the old problems. Mine came with some paint problem ( they said it on the eshop ), so a £240 discount and reduction in paint warranty from 2 years to 1 year. When I picked it up in the shop, the paint is as perfect as a non-2nd version ( the problem as noted was a 2nd layer of matt black paint not adhering to the underlying finished green paint properly in the 2-tone paint scheme. But the guy in the shop said it was the 4th of these 2nds to come in with perfect paint. "Just don't put a 1000psi power washer on it" ). Now have to get some lights - yours look great. I've had my RC520 since 2018. Absolutely amazing bike and great spec for the price. I upgraded the cassette and crank to 105 spec and run Schwalbe Durano plus tyres. Suits me for my daily commute and for training. In many ways I prefer it over my more expensive carbon framed road bikes.

I have got Triban RC 120, because that was what I could afford. I got a mudguard for it. I absolutely love it. Only problem is riding in traffic here is very very risky. Long rides in high roads are the best times. I have been riding it for just more than an year now...
It's good to hear that you love the bike. And the brand has moved from one we buy because that's all we can afford to one people see as providing both quality and value. Sadly, traffic is getting worse and I do feel we are putting our lives on the line to some extent, just venturing out on a bike.

Thanks for the video. I also use my rc520 as my preferred steed. I carried 35kg of luggage 350miles from Devon to Norfolk this summer. Bike was perfect. Compared to my carbon summer bike, I am about 2mph slower at the same power even on the flat. I therefore prefer to use the Triban for solo rides or poor weather rides. Ps. 35 mm tyres do fit with mudguards.

I am a new triban owner, it is my first road bike
I sold my aero carbon rim brake bike for this which is 2kg heaver. But putting on a set of aero wheelset it still performs quite well. I might be slower on average but I still managed to get some PB even on climbs when weight matters and keep up with cyclists on fancier carbon frames. The name Triban on the frame does not bother me at all. I sacrificed the lighter frame for a versatile bike that I can also use for bikepacking with wider tires

Well I now can say that 700 x 32 Conti Contact Plus is probably the limit for mudguards that use the brake bridge or secure to the hole in the forks, they just miss the tyre.
Probably best to go for the rubber bracket type guards that fit to the rear stays and forks blades, if you’re going for tyres wider than 32.
And if you like a rear facing light that attaches to the seat stays by way of a bracket, you’ll have issues with their square shape as I found out today 😂

Great informative review Roy. One of my rides is a Btwin gfaf 520 and a steal at £879 a few years ago. Sram hydro Rival groupset, mavic wheels, carbon fibre forks & fizik saddle. Decathlon make very good value and high spec bikes that would cost more than double if buying from a rival brand

After watching the RC500 on Gravel - through the Wheelers At Large uploads - I opted for the 500 and have not been disappointed. Well put together, and great value for money. I was a bit cynical about buying Online, but everything has been fine. Got some good pre-purchase advice too, re: size, and various options - I'll be looking to go tubeless/gravel tyre, once the OEM have worn out.
Now I know... I will be looking at getting the 520 in the future, for road trim, and have the 5 for gravel, and day-to-day work. I was originally going to go for a Substance V2, but they're taking so long to come back into stock, I gave in, and went for the Triban. I fully recommend them!
Good to know. I’m just about to upgrade my wheels to some Fulcrum Rapid Red 650 B that I picked up at a bargain price. I can’t get the mudguards on with 38mm 700c, but they should be okay with the 27.5 wheel. As I keep saying - a lot of bike for the money 👍

Roy how many miles/km held the stock tires on your RC520?
I changed them immediately as they were an unknown quantity for me and I was planning a century ride, so fitted Gatorskins. I gave the OE tyres to a friend and they are still going strong, but he isn’t a regular rider. Hopefully the OE tyres will be easier to change than the Gators, but Decathlon do recommend a folding tyre as it should fit easier. I also discarded the free lights and the OE saddle. The lights because they were cheap and nasty and the saddle change was due to me having a preferred long ride saddle - the Selle Italia Manflow. I am now using the cheaper Sport Flow and don’t notice any difference on 100+ plus mile rides.
@@RideWithRoy Yeah I wanted to change them aswell immediately to Continental Grand Prix (have a new 28mm pair here). But I may give the OEM tires (Triban Protect 700X28) a chance. I also have some new Schwalbe CX Comp 35mm tires here. So much tires to choose from, haha. I heard the gatorskins have a bad rolling friction?

Hi Roy, I really like your videos...!!! I'm also a big bicycles fan...!!! Let me told you a little advice for to have a cleaner handlebar, you could place the headlamp hanging from the handlebars, rather than the weight being on top.
This gives you more room to see the trail/route, easier adjustment, and less "play" in the headlamp's adjustment system.
I did it once, and now it's my standar setup =) Happy 2022

I am looking to buy the 520 Subcompact, which is the gravel version and since they are very similar, specially the frame, it is the same, it gave me a great idea of what i might get. I am very surprised to learn that you are managing quite good off road on this one, so I might consider this model in case it becomes available before the gravel one. Cheers
I haven’t looked at the differences, Alex, but maybe the gearing is different on the gravel version, whereas the 520 with the 105 is more road geared. I would imagine the frame is the same and you can add wider tyres. Having now experienced tubeless tyres, I would recommend fitting to your new bike, especially as the wheels come tubeless ready.

Hi, I've got an RC520 and the earlier 520 flat bar. out well over 20,000km on the bikes on mixes surfaces and through winters. The common problem with both has been spokes pulling through the rear rim. Decathlon did replace under warranty but I have since upgraded to CX branded wheels which has made the problem go away. other than that the bikes have just had routine maintenance new chains cassette and bottom bracket. All in all great value bikes

It’s still relevant, Martin 😀 I’m not aware of anything that comes close to it for value for money. I’ve also been told by a new owner that his wheels seem a lot better.

I have one of the new winter edition RC520s, bought to replace a Triban 540 that is still going strong after almost 20000 miles but winter commuting on rough rural roads would really benefit from disc brakes and tyres wider than 25mm (tried 28s but they rubbed against the mudguard)) hence opting for the RC520. So far 9 days riding has seen over 400 miles clocked up, the only problem being 1 puncture - I can report the Hutchinson Sector 32 tyres (standard on winter edition) go on and off quite easily, even at the side of a dark lane at 6am, I will soon be switching to tubeless.

I have put over 20,000 km on my Triban RC 520 and it's still going strong. 3 major off's causing a bit of cosmetic damage but asides from that it's been pretty much bomb proof.

Looks a nice bike, I probably should have got that instead of my tifosi ck7, looks better speced than the tifosi, it cost more and is tiagra rather than 105, and I do like the trp hybrid brakes have them on my genesis gravel bike.
I have a Gitaine ali bike with carbon forks 9 gear cassette at the rear and three cogs at the front (centre) . I have worn the gears out and been replacing them. Nobody could supply the same three fron cogs, I tried the net and lots of shops. I was in decathlon so asked the question they also could not help. But the lad serving me went off to their second hand department and came back with an old bike that had what I needed and it was in very good condition. He stripped it off and sold it to me for 30€ . So my old bike is up and running again, I was surprised that they destroyed a bike to help me out but very pleased. Perhaps the part exchange was of low value.

This is a great video! I think about getting myself a proper modern roadbike as my vintage bike is fun but it's a bit too large and uncomfortable (campa super record f Moser). This seems like it will get me a lot of fun for a relatively small price.

I swapped out the cassette, and removed the inner plastic on the rims to help get the tyres off :)... Other than that I'm 2 years in and nothing else done. My biggest issue is my own ride position despite having 2 professional fits :(

Tire grip (original) is little average and eager to change, they make a lot of noise.
I find that the fork and handlebars filter the vibrations very badly I had to put a second layer of bar tape to regain the comfort of my old 1991 mbk. I am at 6.5 bars (6mini / 8max) but the roads at home are. .. bad

My upcoming video should be of interest regarding handlebar vibration. Thankfully, the latest models are well kitted out with thick bar tape. With regard to your heel hitting the cranks. Are you clipped in? I had that same problem so just moved my cleats inboard of the shoe which moved my foot out and cured the rubbing.

I use simple toe clips (normal shoes because they are more practical for me). In order not to rub, I have to put my heels on the outside, it's okay but not very comfortable over time. It's just due to the shape of the rear fork.

Yes, cassette is microshift but when it was worn I changed it for 105. I don’t notice any difference. Yes, the wheels are the weakest link but perfectly okay to start with. They were my first upgrade but still a bargain bike.

Hi, first of all thanks for your video and i'm sorry for my english, i'm french and trying to improve it :/ I've an RC500 for a week now and I love it! But i was wondering what tire to use... for the moment i'm riding on road only, but where i live there is a lot of dirt road like on your video ( 7:53 for exemple) and i don't really take them with the stock tire.
Let's say that i want to ride on 90% road and 10% dirt like that, what would be my best option? Something like your schwalbe marathon or gatorskin? I don't know if that's relevant or not, but i'm a total beginner, and for the moment I start slowly with 15-25km ride with nearly no elevation (200 meters each time, more or less). And in a long term plan, i'm more interested with long distance than maximum elevation or speed.
Can it be a good idea to have, if money allows it, a second full set of wheel + brake disk + tire + cassette, one for 100% road and one if i plan to use ~10-20% of dirt road? Or an schwalbe marathon for exemple is clearly enought even on 100% road and there is no need to spend that much on a second wheel set?

Thank you, Anthony. I have a house in 87190, which we are in the process of selling. France is my favourite country for cycling. I do try to add French subtitles to my videos but haven’t had time lately, so I’m pleased you are learning English. My ride ratio is similar to yours at 80% road. I use 35mm Marathons which work well for me on both surfaces. On my new Tempest Titanium bike I use Schwalbe G1 Allround tyres in tubeless, which also work very well. I’m not sure if the RC500 is tubeless ready, but if it is I would recommend trying tubeless. Your preferred style of riding is the same as mine. I prefer long distances at a steady pace where I can admire the scenery. I remember being a beginner and feeling the thrill of reaching a new distance record. As far as i know, RC500 and 520 are "exactly" the same, with the exception of the sora group instead of 105, and mechanical disk brake instead of hybrid. But i've got a 105 front derailleur (R7000), not really know if it was supposed to be, because in the specs on decathlon it's a sora R3000 listed. It is tubeles ready, i'll keep these 2 in mind :)
I can get by in French face to face but just can’t manage on the phone.
Regarding tubeless. I found it extremely difficult to get the tyres off the Triban wheels so going tubeless should help avoid having to repair a puncture on the road.

Thanks! The carrier is the Tortec Ultralight and I normally use SKS Bluemels mudguards. I’m pleased with both although the SKS mudguards are hard work to fit the first time.

WHAT could go wrong with that bike after 4k, i thought to myself. Ive seen some reviews and opinions, have an idea what gear is on it. 4k km could be month or years, depending on the user. And, i think that the bike is as brand new if it was serviced somewhat regulary, and not abused. If it was abused, i would say it doesnt looke brand new, but could still feel like it.

I just bought the RC520 as my first road bike after watching your video and reading some of the reviews online.
Its a lovely bike but after my first 25 mile ride with it, I found my neck starting to get quite sore midway through the ride.Is this normal or do you think its because of my lack of familiarity with the seating position (i'm new to drop bars)? I had my seat adjusted when I went to pick up my bike so don't think thats the culprit.
Thank you 👍 If you are happy the frame size is correct and your saddle height and fore/aft position is right, you might want to consider saddle tilt. I know THE LAW says we must have our seats perfectly level, but I find that a slight nose up tilt helps my comfort. The other thing to try, if you haven’t already, is to turn over your stem to give a slight upward angle. The benefit of drop bars is the range of hand positions they allow. On any ride I am moving between these positions regularly, as well as lifting off the saddle, which relieves hand, shoulder and sit bone pressure. I hope that one or a combination of these will help you.

If given the choice between a 2021 Trek aluminum frame built with Shimano 105 and the 2021Triban RC520 would you still choose the Triban?
I realize there is a significant price difference between the two brands but sometimes price is reflective of Brand Name and not quality. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Don, I don’t know the Trek model but know they make great bikes. It’s mainly about components with me, so if the spec is the same and you are happy with the price, then I would say it’s just down to availability. If both were available, and knowing what I know now, I would still go for the Triban, as I can’t see any point in paying more for the same group of components. It would check with Decathlon Customer Services for upcoming availability. They’ll probably tell you to tick the webpage box to be informed about availability, but I didn’t accept that and got the list you see on the page. Good luck whichever way you go.

Are drop handlebars more convenient on gravel than flat?
Drop bars are an inherited feature of the gravel bike’s evolution from road bikes, whereas a mountain bike derived version will have flat bars. It can be argued that flat bars give more control, while drop bars provide multiple hand positions. As a gravel bike will often be used on the road, which in my case is 80%, drop bars provide an aerodynamic advantage as well. Of course, it down to personal preference and the time you will spend on gravel.
What is the rear hub width for Triban RC500/520? I can't find this info anywhere and I was in Decathlon today they didn't know either.
I don’t have the Triban anymore so can’t measure it for you. However, there are plenty of owners on here who I hope will help you.
It's a quick release hub with 135mm spacing.

Hello there I can see you are using mtb clipless pedals with some extra platforms I just wanted to ask what would you suggest are better for beginners just getting started on cleats road type shimano spd pedals or MTB ones that you are using for say 3-4 hrs ride.
I used to use the SPD SL ‘road type’ but moved over to the SPD ‘MTB’ type. Unless you are a serious rider looking for every ounce of power then I would always recommend the MTB type. Thank you Albert, that’s very kind. I had a quick look at the Ribble site and while the headline price is similar, the specification isn’t. Before I purchased the Triban RC520 I did extensive research and couldn’t find anything with the Shimano 105 groupset for anywhere near the price. I ride 80:20 Tarmac:Tracks, so the 105 suits me. However, if you will do a great amount off road and/or lots of climbing then the lower gearing of the SRAM groupset of the basic Ribble may suit you better. My recommendation is to decide on the type of riding you will do and then make a side by side comparison of the specification. Personally, I don’t like bikes for road use that have suspension, as this adds weight and also soaks up energy on climbs. A decent wide tyre will soak up bumps alone. The wheels that come with the Triban are perfectly adequate and are tubeless ready, but I’m upgrading them this weekend (video in production). The already high end spec of the RC520, for a great value price, means that such upgrades are cost effective and allow you to customise the bike. Hi Roy, I’ve just placed an order for the Grvl 520 by Triban and wondered if you had any experience/opinion of that bike? In comparison to the Canondale Topstone 4. Hi, Ryan, thanks for the question. I am familer with the Triban RC520, which I upgraded to a gravel spec. The model you are looking at is the gravel ready spec, so no real difference. I’m not familiar with the Cannondale, but checking out the spec I can see two main differences. The Triban has a two ring front chainring as opposed to the Topstone’s single front chainring. The Topstone is nice and simple as it doesn’t need a front derailleur, but a couple of friends find the space between gears of a 1x makes it difficult to find a good gear for road riding. The Triban, using Shimano 105 front and rear derailleurs and brake levers, provides every gear you will need. I would suggest eventually upgrading the cassette to a Shimano 11/34, but that’s a cheap and easy upgrade if you find you’d like a bit easier climbing. The Microshift cassette is the same make as that on the Topstone 4 and works perfectly well. I personally always choose the 105 groupset as it gives me every gear I need for road or gravel. The big difference is that the Topstone uses mechanically operated disk brakes, whereas the Triban is a cable operated hydraulic system. This gives noticeably improved braking efficiency and I would never choose manually operated brakes. In my opinion, while the Triban doesn’t have the same sexy name that the Cannondale does, it is a far superior specification. I rode my longest ride of 155 miles on the heavily laden Triban RC 520 and it was no problem. I hope that helps.

The model I have ordered is the Apex version which has a SRAM Apex1 drive set so I assume that will have the same limitations on the road as the Topstone? It’s my first foray into gravel biking and I’ll be using it mainly for recreational use and a bit of bike packing so I as long as it has the gear ratio to get my up the hills around Huddersfield, I’m not too fussed about setting any records. I certainly won’t be racing anyone or anything! 😂. Is it a huge cost to move to a 105 groupset in the future if I ever wanted to upgrade? Again, thank you for the detailed explanation, it’s really helpful. I was going to cancel the order in favour of picking up the Topstone 4 but that’s only because of the name I think!
Yes, that’s what most people get sucked into. As your requirement is getting up hills, that groupset is probably best in any case. Although we have hills in this area, they are nothing like you have. Personally, I wouldn’t even think about changing to 105 as it probably wouldn’t suit your extreme climbing needs anyway. The main benefit will be those hydraulic brakes, because what goes up….. I am about to fit my mudguards with 36mm tyres so I’ll let you know once done, but looking at the clearance I can’t see a problem. I doubt you’d get 40mm tyres on even without mudguards. Thanks for the question, Jaydolf. I have no experience of this but have seen QR to thru axle conversion kits. I have no idea if these are reliable, but they seen cheap enough to give it a try. If you do, please come back and tell us if it worked.

My Question is that would you need to modify/upgrade rear derailleur or will the existing Shimano 105 R7000 be able to handle 11/34? Also would you recommend going with longer chain?
Thanks, Amey. No, my 11/34 just fitted with the same chain and derailleur. It needed a slight adjustment of the screw that moves the jockey wheel away from the 34 ring, but that is really simple. Feel free to email me if you need any detailed info, my address is in ‘About’. The 34 doesn’t make a huge difference but still a help on steep climbs.
The new R7000 can go up to 11-36 according to internet forums. That's why I'll upgrade my road bike from an old Ultegra 6600 to the new 105 R7000 for Alps riding. Shimano is always very conservative with their specs but in reality a larger cassette fits with some fiddeling at the limiter screws.

Is it true that they are on the small side, as in go one size bigger than you'd do on other brands? I'm 1.86 so that puts me almost between the L and the XL, but at the local Decathlon they only have the smaller frames so I haven't been able to see how an L or XL would fit me to order on line.
I found the sizing to be reliable for me.

I’ve just swapped over the Marathons from my Ribble to the Triban. I did find these quite skittish in wet conditions but seem okay for what I do on the Triban. It remains to be seen how they do in the winter, although I felt some of the problems were caused by the Ribble being electric. The Ribble now has a new pair of Continental Contact Plus. Reviews suggest these provide a better grip and have the same puncture resistant qualities as the Marathons. I do find them a very hard ride without much feel, but I’ll forego that for a puncture free and grippy winter. I’ll feedback again once I try them in winter condition.
amazing video, I have the bike but the front disc brakes cannot seem to adjust properly, whenever Im on the bike the rub against the pads. Decathlon, tied to fix it but still the problem persists. I am not heavy at all, 77 Kg. Any advice?
Thanks, Mohamad. It’s a bit worrying that Decathlon can’t fix it! If the disc is not bent, all I can suggest is that you take the calliper apart, give it a good clean and make sure the pistons are fully pushed in (use a plastic tyre lever). I got this bike in the summer and am looking to put some winter tyres on. Did you upgrade the wheelset or would the original wheels support 35’s?
I have 35 mm Marathons on, Chris, but no space for mudguards. I shall have to go back to my 28mm for winter. However, I’ve just ordered some 650B Fulcrum Rapid Red wheels, from Merlin, for another project, so may use these on the Triban over winter.

They do, but some people prefer to pay more for a lower specification to have a big name brand.
Roy, have you found any issues with the headset bearings? I found mind very stiff and think they require changing.
None at all, Nick, and I do give it some rough treatment. If anything mine seem too free, although the adjustment is correct. Might be worth slackening it off a bit to see of that helps. As you probably know, the bearings are easy enough to get to for checking.
the fact that you cyclists are advertising each other on the road of a "big hole" by yelling it, is super cool, I never seen that in France where I live lol :D
It’s sometimes easier to say ‘good road’ as then you say it less often 😂 I have a house in Haute-Vienne so cycle in France a lot. My experience is that the French fix potholes before they become a problem. And, annoyingly, we pay less than half of the local taxes we pay on our smaller house in the UK.
Looks like a good bike for the money. What width Marathons are you running and what's the maximum width you can fit? As far as the cassette is concerned I'd do exactly the same as you. It would a straight switch out for a Shimano 105 as soon as the MocroShift was done. Nice review.
They are the 35mm switched from my Ribble and had done 3500 miles. Decathlon state that a 36mm is max. I think you could get away with up to 37mm, depending on the tyre brand, but would run the risk of clogging between the tyre and frame.

I’m surprised you found the Marathons easier to fit than the Gatorskins. I’ve always found the exact opposite.
I have the rim braked Triban 520 road bike. A bit heavy but it’s been a great bike, it was my commuting bike and is now my winter steed.
These tyres had done 3500 miles on the Ribble, Trevor, so had slackened up. Otherwise I’m sure they would have been just as bad, although they didn’t become superglued to the rim like the Gators did. As per the advice given, I shall replace with the folding variety next time.
