  • One of the most common questions we receive is “what’s the widest tire that fits the Decathlon Triban RC 520?”. While some versions of Decathlon’s websites list the maximum tire clearance to be 700×36, several people on a couple of bike forums have claimed to go higher. Wider tires not only have better grip but also offer a smoother ride in part to the lower pressures they require and taller side walls. This additional cushioning means that wider tires can soak up potholes if you’re commuting on rough city roads or provide more grip off road. Thanks to some help from Hutchinson, we’re excited to test out some wider tires to see whether they cleared the frame and how it affected the ride. Decathlon ships the RC 520 with their own Triban branded 700×28 tires so we decided to test 700×35, 700×38 as well as a 700×40 tire on our RC 520 (note the frame is the same as the RC 500).
    We chose the Hutchinson Override tires in the 700×35 and 700×38 variations as they offer an excellent blend of on-road compatibility by incorporating a dual tire tread. The center is semi-slick for less rolling resistance while the sides are knobby for improved grip. Hutchinson offers the Override tires in both standard tube and tubeless ready variations as well as a tan walled option. For the larger 700×40 tire, we chose Hutchinson’s new Touareg tires which is one of their most versatile tires and excellent for everything from bikepacking, commuting, to gravel racing. Using the same 127 TPI construction and a small-block knob design, the Touareg tires offer a great blend of puncture resistance, grip and speed.
    Before we get too far, we wanted to take a second to talk about the stock Triban PROTECTLIGHT 700×28 tires that the RC 520 ships with. The tires have a semi-slick design with L shaped groves to improve mixed weather riding. Decathlon has designed the tires with economics in mind, so they are quite heavy at 365g each and stiff. This becomes very obvious once you remove the tires from the rim (a very difficult task as they appear to be glued from the factory!) and feel how rigid they are. Compared to the 127 TPI construction of the Hutchinson tires which easily deform to pressure, the Triban tires are very rigid. Whether you want to go wider or not, we definitely recommend upgrading the tires as we discussed in our review of the 700×28 Hutchinson Sector 28 - as high quality tires really improved the speed and feel of our RC 520...

    Thank you "The Sweetest Cyclist" for this video and showing us what size tires we can put on a Triban RC 520! I really appreciate it! I just got my bike yesterday and I haven't ridden it yet. It was too cold for us here in Florida...haha! I was actually looking at videos on UA-cam about upgrading to a wider tire on any bike and I was surprised to find your video and it was for the Triban RC 520. I didn't know before if I could put bigger tires onto the same rim. I thought I might have to buy the rims to do it. I am so happy you put together this video and showed us we could put bigger tires on the stock wheels.
    My last bike was a Schwinn Varsity 1250 that I paid about $200 and I rode it for over 26,000 miles in the last 6 years. It has 36 mm tires on it. I've hit sugar sand a few times before and thought I was going to eat it. I am not too fond of the 28s that come with the Triban but, I bought the bike because I read that I could put on wider tires.
    I did ride my new Triban RC 520 yesterday just in front of my house and I didn't feel stable on it at all. It's going to take me some time to get used to it. First off, where the brakes are. I had flat handle bars before and the brake levers were right there. In the 80's I rode a Benoto Bike with the hand brakes below and on top. I was looking for the top ones yesterday from old habits. The brakes didn't seem they stopped the bike too well. I am not sure if I have to adjust them or if they have to be broken in. My Schwinn rim brakes stop the bike better than the Triban it seemed. I can see the Triban is going to give me more Aero for sure so, I am happy about that. I am looking forward to my next headwind challenge to see if it does!
    Thank you so much for the video! I did subscribe to your channel and I will take a look at your upcoming and other videos later! Happy Trails!

      Thanks for sharing, I'm glad the video could help. It was a question a lot of people had asked after our initial RC520 review. If you've been riding flat handlebars for a long time, transitioning to drop bars can be a bit of a challenge but it is definitely worth it in the end.

    A tip for putting on new tires. Use soapy water EDIT: Liquid soap worked better for me. for beads and rims. Inflate the wheel above the maximum pressure (half a bar or more) and then reduce the pressure to the optimum inflation. As a result, the tire will be equally seated throughout the rim and will not ripple from side to side, up and down.

    An issue that can occur is during a ride when it's raining, on off-roads paths with mud and leaves, it can get stuck easily ! NOt enough clearance for them to get away by themselves.
    Another problem is the size of your shoes haha, if you are a Size 45EU, you will touch the front tire while riding.

    Hi! Appreciate the video, since there is not that much on youtube on the RC520. Quick question - what size inner tubes did you use for the 38' tires? Would it be okay to use the stock inner tubes?

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  3 роки тому +1

      Great question. Inner tubes are actually rated for different sizes, so if you do go wider you might need wider inner tubes. I can't recall what the stock inner tubes are, but they are typically 18-25mm. That said, you can still run the more narrow tubes on the wider tires but they will be more prone to flats as they will be stretched out more.

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  3 роки тому

      I haven't had any issues with it, it just seems slightly out of true. The stock wheels/tires are quite heavy and it can be difficult to mount tires on stock wheels so you may want to budget for an upgrade if you want to improve the performance of the bike.

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  3 роки тому +2

      The stock Triban wheels make tire swaps a lot harder than they should be. I don't have any special tricks, just patience and careful use of a tire lever to get the tire to pop on the bead. One issue I had was the the side walls wouldn't sit flush (they would be slightly under the bead) so I ended up using a tire seater (ua-cam.com/video/sIfiFUSM7Ro/v-deo.html).

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  3 роки тому +1

      It depends on which tires and tire pressure you choose. If you get a knobby dirt tire and run it at low pressure it will be a bit slower on the road. With a dual tire thread (smooth in the center and knobby on sides) like the Hutchinson Sector tires the bike feels faster than the stock Triban tires.

  • @binoardev
    @binoardev 3 роки тому +2

    Hi! Are you using the same wheelset for all the tires. I'm asking because the triban comes with a 17 x 622 wheel or rims. Isn't that to skinny for a 38 or 40 mm tires. Thanks

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  3 роки тому +1

      For this video - yes it is on the stock wheels. You are correct, the 17x622 + 700x40 tires is not a great combination (according to www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html 700x37 is the conservative limit for these wheels). I would recommend upgrading the wheels for those who want to ride that wide of a tire or stick with 700x35s (personally I've gone back to the 700x28 Sector 28 tires).

      Most of the Hutchinson tires are 'Tubeless Ready' and can also be run tubeless. I wouldn't expect the overall tire clearance issue to change though as the tires will fit the same way. We have a video converting the Triban RC520 to a tubeless Hutchinson Sector 28 tires - as long as you use rim tap and don't overtighten the valve it goes smoothly.

      Yes, you can. According to Sheldon's tire sizing guide (www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html) the 17c inner width means you could run a 700x25 tire on the stock rim. The sizing chart is conservative - so you could even go more narrow but the ride will get harsher.

    • @TheSweetCyclists

We had the same issue and ended up having to use a tire seater - ua-cam.com/video/sIfiFUSM7Ro/v-deo.html. There are other tricks too: add soapy water to the edges and inflate to maximum tire pressure to help it seat. Using compressed air a tubeless tire inflator to quickly inflate can also help.

      You don't have to replace the wheelset/inner tube - but using a larger inner tube designed for 700x35 tires is recommended (the stock one fits but it is more stretched out on the larger tire). Upgrading the wheelset to something with a wider inner tire will give you better performance and reduce chances of flats though but that's something you can do if you get more serious about gravel/off road riding.

      With a rim brake setup, you're width limitation will likely be the brake calipers themselves. We don't have a rim brake option to verify though - but you can take a ruler / caliper to see how much space you have inside the caliper / bottom bracket area. Let us know if you try some wider tires though - I'm sure other people would be interested to know.

      I didn't use anything special, just some patience and tire levers. You should try leaving the tires in the sun to warm up, that may help them expand a bit. There some larger tire levers you can use, but I'd recommend using caution if you have an inner tube as it's easy to puncture the tube while installing the tire.

      We agree, the tires fit and ride well but don't allow for much space for mud/debris. If you've ever broken a spoke on a ride you'll know that having a little extra clearance for "wobbling" means you can at least make it back home.

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  3 роки тому +2

      That is a controversial question to ask. There are a lot of different theories on the ideal tire pressure. I would start by starting with ~10 psi less than the max tire pressure for the tire you use.
      The lower pressure you go - the more grip off road but softer ride (if you go too low, you will ride on the rim itself). Higher pressure means stiffer but faster on pavement. I believe many people air them down for off-road, then pump them up for commuting/hard roads.

      It depends on the inner width of your wheels. I'd recommend checking out Sheldon's tire size chart

So far, I have tryed Vittoria Rubino Pro 700x25 and Maxxis Re-fuse 700x28 (this one bought in a Decathlon store here in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where I leave) and none of them have fit! Every bicycle mechanic that I ask for advice say they have never experienced something like this! Would you tell me if this hutchinson are easy do fit on Decathlon's stock tubeless ready rims? As I am in Brazil and we don't have too much options of tyres here nowadays, I would also be pleased to know which other brands of tyres can be more easily fit on those rims... The stock wheels are quiet difficult to mount tires on, it's one downside. The Hutchinson tires installed easily the first time, but re-installation required using a tire seater tool (ua-cam.com/video/sIfiFUSM7Ro/v-deo.html) to get the side walls to mount correctly (they would dip down). It's a standard sized wheel, so most 700x28-40 tires will fit it's just that the rims are deep inner rim profile which makes it difficult for the beads to sit properly. With some patience the tires fit though.

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  2 роки тому +1

      Yea, the Triban wheels are very difficult to get the tires to mount on. Off camera we had to spend a lot of time pulling and adjusting the tires to get the beads to mount. I'd recommend taking your time (soapy water, tire lever tool, inflating to max pressure) or thinking about some upgraded wider wheels.

      A high performance road cycling tire can really change the behavior of the bike. There isn't a specific 'fast' size but going down to a 700x28 will let you run higher pressure (~80psi) and make it faster on the road. The ride will be harsher than wider tires but it'll be faster.

      @akhil ranjan That's interesting. What wheels are on the bike - and can you find out the inner width? Depending on the inner width of your rim there is an idea tire size range ( see www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html ) - it sounds like you have some wider rims which would limit how narrow you could go. Note you can always buy a second set of more narrow wheels - entry level wheels are pretty cheap especially second hand through Craigslist or Ebay.

      @@TheSweetCyclists i mean the current tires am running are 700x42c which is 27.5 inches i guess its direct conversation of 700mm into inches and if you look at iso and bsd its 44-622 so i like am really just mindeffed with the amount of science that goes behind measuring your tires. 🙃

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  3 роки тому

      It's definitely confusing. It sounds like you have pretty wide inner rim width - which means you don't want to go too narrow. I'd recommend just buying a second wheelset though - they are cheap used for a lower-end model and it gives you a backup wheelset. I just bought some Mavic Ksyriums for less than $350 that I'll be swapping onto the Triban myself.
