Nearly Hit by a Train!
In today's bumper edition we finally find the 'hidden' church. While exploring its ancient graveyard, ghostly whispers are heard - but all is not what it may seem. We also reveal upcoming reviews, including Sena C1 communication helmets and some new autumn and winter gloves from Luxebiking.
We meet blind tandem stoker, Charles, and his wonderful tandem pilot daughter, Emily - a heart-warming story if ever there was one. We also reveal some BIG news about a new long distance route planned for Lincolnshire and a date to test ride it. And that's all after we narrowly missed being hit by a train!

    Hi Roy. I enjoyed meeting you and Wendy at the Hilltop cafe yesterday. I was with my dad and we had an interesting chat with you about filming and equipment.I really like your style of video and seeing the ride from this perspective is fantastic. I’ve only just started out and clearly have a lot to learn. I’m really interested in history and have visited Stoke field years ago. This was really informative and right up my street….Loved it. Your guest was incredibly knowledgeable too. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Can you remind me what type of camera and software you use to film.? It’s so clear. Thanks again, really enjoyed it. 👍🏻👏🏻

      It was really good to meet you both, too. Your enthusiasm was clear to see so I wish you the very best with your channel, which I will subscribe to. My camera is the DJI Action 4 which is way more reliable than the GoPro I previously used. With GoPro, I needed a Media Mod to use my external mics with it. Not only is this expensive, it makes changing batteries a chore. With the Action 4 I plug straight into the camera and batteries takes seconds to change. There is now an Action 5 so there should be some good deals on the 4. For editing I use Black Magic’s Da Vinci Resolve. I do now use the paid for Studio version but started out with the free version, which is packed with functionality. I use a high powered laptop as it does demand a lot of processing power for some of the effects, but they are not necessary. There is now a version for Apple iPad, but I have no idea how useable it is. As I prefer to show viewers the rather than concentrate on me, I use a GoPro chest mount for the camera, which is compatible with the DJI camera. I hope that all helps but you are very welcome to email me if you want to ask anything specific. Good luck with HikesnBikes!

    Very exciting about the route! I really want to do the same in the area where I live in Japan. We have an "official" bicycle route in this area (google Pacific Cycling Road Shizuoka if you are interested -- I'd post a link, but UA-cam doesn't really like those...). Unfortunately it's very poorly mapped and some transitions don't make sense. It's also (and I hate to say it), mostly boring. It's entirely a flat course along the coast. I'm hoping to compile alternate routes for people who would like some scenery other than the ocean :-) I think cycling tourism is on the rise here and it's such an amazing place to ride if you know the secrets. I'd love to ride your route some day. My wife and I lived in the UK for 2 years and we really miss it!

    I'm non believer over religious matters or the spirit world generally. No problems if it's what you believe but for me it's all bunkum. I do like a nice church or any religious building. I admire the work of old craftspeople, mostly done with hand tools and not well paid for their labours and often centuries old. Now I'm a bit of a Luddite with bike technology, wary that an electrical failure might leave me stranded, but true or not, lack of basic maintenance is a bigger risk. On one of my longer rides yesterday I had the rear derailleur fall apart. The screws through the pulley and jockey wheel must have been loose (explains the poor gear change) and parts disappeared into the grass, never to be seen again. I always carry a chain breaker so I ended up getting home single speed. Whoever said the Vendee was flat! Having admitted to Luddite tendencies I'm very interested in the helmet review. I'm a little hard of hearing so communication with my wife can be tricky and discussions can get difficult. If the review is positive and they end up making a small size I'll consider getting two. Charles and Emily are an inspiration to us all. No matter the difficulty, find a way to overcome it, brilliant. Thanks for a slightly different video. I've deliberately not mentioned singing, I don't want fame going to Wendy's head.

    This is a really cool product! I have a suggestion for future demonstrations though - make sure that the last few inches of the tire that you are installing are on the valve side of the rim. This allows all of the tire bead to locate deep in the center groove of the rim, giving the bead enough slack to get over the edge of the rim. Otherwise, the valve will be in the way of the bead (especially on narrower rims) and make it even harder to pop that bead over the rim.

Which bikes did you use if that's not asking much? And what tyres? (I mean, they don't look very gravel/trekking/touring tires to me) . I guess you don't have the Triban RC 520 these days, iirc, you sold it time ago as you explained in a video time ago, if my memory serves me right. I am pondering to get one of those, but with a single chainring (I have a 1X, a 2X, and a 3X bikes, and imho there is nothing like a good 1X with fast gears -10T- for easier sections and slow but easy gears to go uphill)

      Thank you! My bike is a Planet X Tempest Titanium that I built myself see Planet X Tempest Bike Build - Done! ua-cam.com/video/lD3EojZAT1A/v-deo.html. The tyres are Schwalbe G1 Allround Performance Raceguard 27.5 tubeless. I chose these for their performance on both road and light gravel. They work well on gravel, especially with the pressure lowered, but are useless in mud. We don’t tend to do anything in mud, intentionally, so the balance works well for me. Wendy was riding her Liv Devote carbon frame. They were the original equipment tubeless tyres but I can’t tell you the spec. I rode with someone who was riding the gravel version of the RC520. It’s a great performer and a lovely looking bike.

Wasted some money as I'd seen a chappie change his Triban to an 11-40 cassette with the help of an Wolftooth derailleur extender. I bought both of those but then changed my mind thinking if I changed the chainrings I could get by with a smaller cassette (not as big gaps). Anyway, the chainrings are now over £150 and I think Shimano are about a tenner more, so looking from that perspective, you've made a £20-30 gamble. I think that's a gamble worth taking!

      @@skewwer I did recognise your name, Steve - thanks for watching, and coming on the ride. I should have added a caption to say that all links are in the description, but this is the Pass Pixi link passpixi.com. I plan to make a a video on how to report drivers to police but that won’t be until October. In the meantime, here is the link to the Lincolnshire Police reporting site. www.lincs.police.uk/ro/report/rti/rti-beta-2.1/report-a-road-traffic-incident/. Theirs is one of the easiest to use. Officially, they require 2 minutes of video either side of the incident but no need to do that unless the incident was prolonged. I don’t usually make a long statement as the video tells the story. Something like ‘I was riding in the primary position when I was unnecessarily close passed by the offending driver.’ Let’s hope you don’t need to use it often but, sadly, I suspect you will.

    Thanks for a very informative video Roy. Accepting the value in close pass situations, on a broader point, how would you see the 4K as a camera for more general use as a 'normal' video camera - I hope that makes sense!

    • @RideWithRoy
      @RideWithRoy 25 днів тому

      @@paulloring6307 it makes perfect sense. If the video examples you’ve seen are acceptable then it would work. However, the sound may be an issue if you wanted to record your surroundings. Although they’ve improved the sound, it will still pick up some road noise. The alternative is to record the sound separately, through a phone, for example, and add it in the edit.

    I’ve had the mk 1 and another which I can’t recall. There are some far better cycle cams out there, esp if you are wanting to record drivers on mobile’s. I would not recommend unless it is all you can afford, the main criticism of mine was between the low resolution, the slow frame rate and poor low light quality, it wasnt the best for winter commutes. My choice is the Ace-Pro 4K on helmet, cyclic on front and back!

    • @RideWithRoy
      @RideWithRoy 25 днів тому

      Fortunately those issues have all been resolved with the new camera, for a third of the price of the ones you mention. Although I could afford these, I much prefer to spend less on something that does everything I need it to. As you would have seen, I did address the customer service issues so it’s a case of pay more if a guaranteed fast response is important. It usually is for me, but not at such a price premium.

    Thanks Roy, interesting stuff and great demo footage, especially of the IS. I suspected that that, plus the 60fps capability would indeed be the main pros of the 4k cam. Shame about the battery life but I guess you can't have everything. It still looks a good deal compared to the Cycliq. I like that a front cam will also pick up drivers coming out of side roads and also wonder how well a rear cam does show up how close a pass actually is.

    Purchased a Mk 1 (with green light + spare battery) after watching your original video and it's been very satisfactory, thank you. I did experience the lack of response to emails regarding the purchase at the time but now I understand why. My query was regarding the "spare seals" that were supposed to be in the box. A set of seals were included in the box but the camera body had none fitted, so once I fitted them there were no spares as such, if that makes sense😬. Overall very pleased.
