- I go fishing for smallmouth bass on the river one last time before they move to deeper water for the winter. Will the Bitsy Bug jig get some big thumps???
Gear used on this trip:
Lure: Bitsy Bug Jig 1/4oz amzn.to/46XNuHs
Z-man TRD Craws amzn.to/40mYbB8
Rod: St Croix BassX 6'6" M F amzn.to/43qNq0o (new version)
Reel: Daiwa Zillion SV TW G amzn.to/3F6TCCc
Line: Trilene Sensation 14lb amzn.to/44rDODR
Pliers: Umpqua Rivergrip amzn.to/3ykw4ow
Net: Frabill 3673 amzn.to/39S8es0 (new floating version)
Anchor: Power Pole micro anchor amzn.to/3EHNcbo
Knowing your fishes habitat, along with good lure presentation can really make all the difference.
Nice job,Matt!👍
I've tried fishing shallow weed beds in the fall and catch nothing. The weeds are dying off and the area gets low in oxygen. I've done this with zero success and always have to fish deeper.
Coffee is made just in time 🫡
I just watched an episode where you hiked through the forest in the spring and stopped at a few small lakes to fish with a collapsible rod. You only caught a few small panfish but you still enjoyed yourself, and I thought it was great. I'm in my sixties and have fished, mostly for cold water fish, for over 50 years. In the last few years I started kayak fishing targeting bass and pike and musky. I was always a little scared landing a big pike or musky from a kayak, but I found your channel and saw how you did it, so I feel a lot better about it now. Thanks for one of the best, if not the best, fishing channels on UA-cam. I hope you keep fishing, enjoying yourself, and making videos.
I needed this. I haven’t fished since the end of September and my mental health is suffering greatly. Living vicariously through you and being able to see you catch some nice ones helps tremendously
You sold me on that bitsy bug several years ago! That's a smallmouth bait that works. I like the craw colors. First time I used it I caught 10 smallmouth in a quarter mile stretch
What a wonderful day of smallie fishing on a beautiful river, thanks, Matt, for taking us along! Anxiously awaiting your next video!
I appreciate your commitment to a lure you decide to run on each of your videos. I tend to loose patience after an hour or so of fishing the same lure and find myself making changes. It's inspiring to see your persistence pay off with some great catches.
This man has the most impeccable uploading schedule
Best bass fishing channel on UA-cam
October is so beautiful in the midwest. Love it.
Man that Bitsy Bug is just a fishing machine. Been using them for 20+ years and it just catches em. $2 a pop too. That and the Berkley Powerworm and the original jointed floating Rapala, three old school baits that still produce. Nice job Matt, keep em coming.
I’ve smashed creek smallmouth for over 20 years with the old f7 floating rapala plug in the brown trout pattern. We call it the baby trout. Lethal as both a top water bait or under the surface on a straight retrieve in shallow water. Classic.
This is how you start off a Saturday morning 👍
Thanks for taking me along!!
a very good show to make us sleepy quickly, good night everyone... 😴😴
Jakarta at 9:47 pm
Nice day of fishin see ya next time
Perfect video to enjoy while sitting in deer blind.
The Bitsy bug is good. I used it a long time. I started using the Denny Bauer baby structure jig. Cost a little more but I lose very few and it's got a much better hook. Nice video, thanks
good man show everything for new fishing guys thanks very mush
Voice and sound quality was amazing!
Super video - The bitsy bug for some reason just catches fish!!!! It has been a favorite of mine for years.
It's always a good thing being on the Open weather it's on the river or lake
Thanks, Matt! You are the bomb!!!
When you say BIG it gets my attention.
Another great video!
Fun video, Matt. Well done technically, as always, and it's a pleasure to watch and listen as you fish. It's much more relaxing than the guys I fish with.
You’ve caught more smallmouth 18 “ than Jamie O Brien has gotten barreled at pipeline !! Amazing as usual .
Another late season post from a real expert on smallmouth bass. Kayaking is the best way to fish them, imho.
Now that it's November and the bite night be all done til hard water.
Woke up, great start to a new day
Loading up my kayak right after this! Thanks Matt!

Best fisherman in youtube- calm consistent reverent🙏🏼❣️🇺🇸happy holidays Matt‼️
Catchin footballs! Great vids. Thank you
Thanks for another great video, always watching from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
Beautiful scenery
Mat slams thumb in truck door! Mat whispers ahh shucks 😂
They're all nice especially when they bite
I knew there was going to be a nice one on that lay down 20-1/2 Nice !!
That black thumb is looking gnarly man, hope the truck door is ok lol. Caught some footballs in this video as usual, keep up the grind, tight lines 🤙
You caught one eyed Willy!
Heck yeah this video was filmed on my birthday. Lol great content brother God bless brother stay safe out there on the water
Idk why I thought of this now, but I imagine the fish thinking, “WHAT IS THIS PLACE?!” when being brought out of the water lol.
Howdy Matt!
New kayak with electric troll motor!
Next season you gotta give the mega bass sleeper craw a shot maybe in the bed videos. Game changer for me this year on the smallies in WI
Last catch of the day love it a pike.
Fish whisper you need to detox from
Smallies lol.
Excellent video…so fantastic smallies!
Best small jig ever!
Never caught a Smallie before. Hopefully I can get one next year.
Hey just to verify your comment, I’m in NC our northern rivers/streams are 46-48 and our southern rivers are around our southern rivers/streams are 59-62 degrees as of 11/3. When you made this video 10/17 they were quite a bit warmer.
Very similar weather here in Midland Ontario
This has been killer for me the last month especially except I've been using black and blue 1/4 with a yum crawbug. They've been hitting it swimming it back it's crazy. I like the bitsy flip too little stouter hook on the flip.
Matt I'm a huge fan. Your knowledge of the waters and fishes tendencies and videos are amazing. But I can't find the bitsy bug jig like the one you showcase in this video, in my area which is Portage, Michigan. And we have a nice amount of bait shops
I usually have to order them online somewhere. Last time I found them for like $1.19 a piece somewhere, grabbed 20 of them and I’ve been set for a while now.
@@ndyakangler OH wow. Nice. I've also looked online. Guess I'll try harder Lol. Keep up the great work. I'll continue to watch. Happy fishing👍
this is why I like to call you "The Bob Ross of Fishing" The way you conduce yourself and present your videos it's pure art to me, the Scenery and the places you go fishing are simply beautiful!! would really like to see you bank fishing once in a while too!! Thanks for all you do to make these videos possible.
This is true! He speaks so clear and quiet and it's soothing 😂
Hey! That's my birthday!
Made my morning! ♥
Great video, man! The leaves are all bare up here in Michigan already. Have you ever done a fall transition catfish video?
I’ve caught catfish on this same stretch of river, a couple weeks after the smallies left it for the fall. They seem to put up with the cold a bit longer.
I started to see my river bass move south in the beginning of October this year. This in northern Ohio, it got cold earlier this year. There is about a two week difference between here and southern Ohio. So I guess central Ohio is the line between north and south. Usually it happens mid October to late for me.
It seemed like the water temp stayed right around 50 for 2-3 weeks here. That’s about the point for those fish to start moving so they were scattered for a bit.
I caught my biggest largemouth bass on January 22,2000. 46 degree clear water. Bitsy bug jig with strike king trailer.
When I set the hook that fish stripped drag so much. I had no idea at the time it was a bass. I thought it was a large catfish because I couldn’t bring the fish up.
After about a minute and a half she came up some and I could see the fish. At first I thought ok six or seven pounds.
A few more dives later she came up and vomited out two fish. One was a crappie and the other I have no clue.
I had this fish mounted but now I wish I wouldn’t have done it.
Anyway weight was 10lbs 12oz. 28” long and 20.5” girth. These measurements were taken after 45 miles of driving.
I can only guess what her weight was had she not vomited up fluid and two fish.
She almost swallowed that bitsy bug and the hook was bent almost 90 degrees. Mercy what a fight it was for so cold of water.
I enjoy your videos and thanks for uploading!
@NDYakAngler if you get chance because I know you enjoy St.Croix rods -- the 2023 Mojo Bass rods are mighty nice 👍.
They do look pretty nice! My only issue with St Croix is that lately they seem to be doing away with the under 7’ rods. They used to have three 6’6”-6’8” rods in almost every series that were perfect for my kayak bass fishing setups. Now I’m lucky if they have one and I have to go with 7’6” rods for my other two and that’s just way longer than I like to deal with in a kayak. I’m hoping the new BassX rods have all three and are more like the ones I have than the current ones.
I think the new Mojo does have a 6'8 M XF similar to the the older Bass X M XF (not sure about newer models) -- I had the Bass X for finesse jig fishing the rivers before I snapped the tip 😞. Looking at the selection though your right they have 2 rods under 7 foot.
5:33. Shawshank Redemption reaction video?
Awesome videos. Just curious what river(s) you’re fishing in MN? One of your videos it looked like the Cannon River near Welch, Mn. I live near there and it’s the river I fish the most.
Great vids. Can you start weighing them?
Just wanted to say thank you for answering my questions about fishing smallmouth. I was new to Minnesota and it was my first time fishing for smallmouth. I was able to catch a few smallmouth around 3 pounds using your tips! Do you have any winter fishing tips for smallies?
Thank you!
I’ve never had much luck targeting them through the ice. If I float the Mississippi I look for the deeper slower moving water.
@@ndyakangler Thanks for the tip! My brothers coming up this winter from Texas and I'm hoping I can take him to the Mississippi to catch some smallies.
We don’t care about the dates just the fishing
We enjoy your videos so much! I hope to fish in your part of the country one day; love the clarity of the rivers. What kind of camera do you use for your videos?
I have a Hero 5 black with a polarized lens, and a Zoom H1/lapel mic for audio.
Haven't seen much of the new kayak. Just can't let go of old faithful I guess.
I’ve used the Hobie a couple times recently. It’s a good kayak for when I want to cover a lot of water and have a couple spots in mind where I want to park and sit. Unfortunately that’s a small percentage of my trips. The pedal drive is tough for slow working along and searching for fish. Using just the rudder and pedal drive to keep in a straight line and my kayak pointed the right direction I have to go way faster than I like to maintain control and be able to fish.
I just saw what your little power pole costs. Very effective but WOW on the price.
The anchor setup was almost as much as my kayak. I’ve had it for about eight years now though so the investment has been well worth it!
8:48 is the fish's eye missing
Ive caught 2 smallies in my life both were pretty small and were caught on a lake they werent supposed to be in like on the dnr site they werent listed as a species that were in that lake
That’s always a nice surprise to find smallies where you don’t expect them! I fished a lake earlier this summer they were illegally introduced on decades ago and it now has a pretty decent population of big fish.
Ever try Big O crank baits Mr NDyak? Work good here in central Indiana and our fishing sucks. Or a lure collaboration with Marling Baits?
It
must be Saturday.
If there is any type of water...NDYakAngler will catch fish, GUARANTEED!! 😉
Is it me or is fish #3 missing an eye?
🖐😎👍
It’s been 70-80° in Maryland then it dropped to 45 and 30s at night now I can’t get anything other than pickerel to bite lol
We’ve had ice making weather for a week straight and I actually did decent fishing smallies today! The pike were active too though, I caught a few and donated a few jigs to others.
This guys content rocks👌 he’s an awesome casting machine ⭐️👍
After seeing these leaves, I left a comment asking the date... and you answered within a few seconds. I'm kinda puzzled that ya'll got more leaves up there than we do down here in western NC. We're getting to the point where it's mostly just the oaks still holding on to their leaves. I figured ya'll would be ahead of us on the change of seasons, but I guess I was wrong.
Our leaves are gone now and we’ve had snow a couple times with ice making weather the past week.
@@ndyakangler In the past, I've had pretty good success keeping my hands warm using the following method: rubbing my hands with Vaseline and the putting on Latex gloves over these, then fingerless wool gloves on top. If using the bait caster, I'll cut the thumb off the latex gloves. It's OK, there might be a better method, dunno.
It was either the third or fourth one caught it looked like one eye fore sure if not both eyes were missing. Check it out if you want, but if both eyes are gone can fish still feed by vibration if they are blind? I never thought about it. Cheers. 😊
I’ve caught a couple fish that were blind in both eyes. The one that hit topwater missed a couple times before I hooked it.
I have noticed lately that three of the YT channels I follow are turning into the Home Shopping Network. 50% content and 50% sales pitch from a channel sponsor or channel partner as they call it. I don’t even know what that means. Sponsor? Partner? I find Matt’s approach to YT life just right! One vid a week (not three) and an occasional short. No sponsorship ads and no product placement spots. Just a welcoming Howdy each video and a nice voice narration over NATURE sounds IE water splashing, kayak thumps, loon calls, fish release splashes, and the sound of a lake breeze rustling the trees. Hopefully you are sponsored by St Croix or Daiwa or Quantum because I have bought a bunch of stuff from A from your links.
I get stressed about plugging my own t-shirts lol, the last thing I want to do is turn my channel into a big sponsor ad. I’m not sponsored by any companies but I have an Amazon Associates account and a few other affiliate links I can use so the links in the video description are usually one of those as long as I can find a link for what I’m using. The nice thing about Amazon is if someone clicks one of my links and then shops around I get commission for anything they buy in that browser session whether it’s the product I linked or some random thing they remembered they needed. It’s not a big percentage I get but it can add up. Someone went on there a while back and bought like 10k worth of factory equipment I got commission for and it payed for a couple nice steak dinners for my girlfriend and I!
@@ndyakangler Not being sponsored by any company is YT freedom. Tell me then why you seem to be exclusively partial (if not married then at least going steady) to St. Croix rods. You have some $$$$ ones and some $ ones that you regularly use. I own several myself (thanks to your Amazon links) and like them a great deal --- but I also own and use other brands of rods (including a $20 Berkley Cherrywood spinning rod). Just wondering . . .is all, as I wait for spring to come so I can launch the kayak again. I have been trying to imagineer a way to ice fish from a kayak. LOL Any ideas???
@@canyonrunner I just really like the St Croix rods I use, and once I find something I like I’ll generally stick with it for several years. A few of their rod series will usually have three models in the 6’6”-6’8” range, ranging from a lighter end medium to MH and those three powers/actions are usually all I need for a day of bass fishing and I like having basically the same rods with different specs to choose from. I get a better feel for those rods and that gives me better casting accuracy. Too many rods from other companies have no or extremely limited options under 7’ and that’s just more rod length than I really need in a kayak or want to try to jam into my truck to transport them. Most of the rods I grab off the shelf and look at have way more butt end of the handheld than I like as well which digs into my gut when sitting in my kayak trying to fish. St Croix seems to get those dimensions just right. I tried several other rods, some cheaper and some comparable to the BassX I use now before I really started using St Croix and in that price range the $100-120 St Croix rods just felt so much nicer. I do still have several Legend Tournament rods but after 5-6 years of hard use 3 out of the 4 I used most need to be sent in for warranty and they’ll probably want to send me new rods. Unfortunately they’ve gone with 7’+ for the most part with that series so I’m holding on to them hoping one day they’ll bring back the 6’8”s I can replace my old ones with.
@@ndyakangler Here's hoping that corporate St. Croix is listening and will bring back your treasured rods. Ford never did when my 1967 Mustang was stolen in 1972 and I only wanted a direct replacement. Winter stays long here in the high country of northern Utah. Skiers and snowmobilers love it; not so much the stream/river fishermen. May you fare well
Dang that one at 11 minute had to be over 5 lbs right ? Straight tank
It was probably right around 5.
The smallie @8:50 was missing an eyeball.
Anyone else notice?
I read all the comment to see if anyone noticed. How the hell did Matt miss that? Everyone mentioned his thumb but missed the fish's eye!
To be honest with you I do like to know the date when you're fishing. Because your continental climate is different to the UK's more maritime climate, knowing what part of the year you're in is difficult to guess.
I suspect that catching a sturgeon in a kayak could be tricky due to size, but would it be anymore difficult than catching a very large Muskie? At least the teeth aren't as dangerous. 😊😊❤❤❤😊😊
The couple sturgeon I saw while fishing yesterday were way bigger than any muskie I’ve caught! The netting and handling them in a kayak would be a tough part. Pike and muskie are easy to grab they almost have a built in handle on their jaw.
@@ndyakangler Having had a look at a couple of websites, and with the length and weight they get to, I see your point. A 2.5 metre and 120+ lbs fish would be difficult to land. I suspect that you would need a bigger net too. 🙂🙃🙄❤️🙄🙃🙂
Awwww shieeeeet
Where's the snow???
How's that thumb feeling
It hasn’t hurt since the day I slammed it. The old nail was starting to peel away so last night I took a nail clipper and my Dremel grinder to it and filled in between the old and new one with superglue. For the first time in about three months it looks almost normal again!
I wonder why he never keeps any to eat.
Eat fish, means less in river.😊
@@Kltpzyxm17they reproduce. I've been eating out the Detroit River most of my adolescence. There's never been a lack of fish.
The fish on this river are catch and release only, as they are at a lot of spots I fish. The DNR stocked fish there once and that’s it, no seasonal stocking to replenish the population those fish are on their own. On a small river like this one person fishing it and keeping fish frequently could have a huge impact on the fish population.
@@ndyakangler ok, thanks for following the rules then. Love your channel, and thanks for replying to my comment.
How do you fish that jig? Do you twitch, pause or do you reel it? What technique works best for the setup you use?
I’ll usually let it sink and hop it along the bottom, maybe more drag it slowly once the water gets colder in the fall.
You used a TRD Craw on this jig. Could you use a Nikko Craw instead or would it be too big?
The Nikko craw is just a little bigger plastic than I’d normally toss on a Bitsy Bug, I’m sure it would work but it can also be difficult to get their tougher plastic over the poured lead type bait keeper like the Bitsy Bug has. The wire type on Z-man jigs works great for Nikko plastic.
Since it's November when this video is being posted I'm guessing that the fishing gear and the kayak have been put away (except maybe some ice-fishing gear) for the winter.☹ The best we can hope for now is that you've got a few trips on video that you haven't already edited and posted.
I just took the kayak out today! I’m 3-4 videos behind on posting though so it will probably be a month before I upload todays trip. I wanted to have some extra videos to work with to cover the gap between open water and ice fishing. Small ponds were frozen over today but the forecast is showing mid 40’s for highs the next ten days so as long as the wind isn’t whipping one or two of those I’ll be getting the kayak out some more!
What does an average 18 incher smaller weigh? Not many smallies in southwest Oklahoma.
I’d say 3.5 or so for the bass around here.
Matt at 14:04.........."i'm gonna keep lookin' for that 21 though". lol Begs me to ask what your PB ever is??? Also, what did you get it on and what time of year/conditions. As i don't recall if you've ever said.
My biggest smallie was 6-2, 22 3/8” right about this time of year maybe a few days later into November.
@@ndyakangler Wow. That's a giant for sure. And your bait of choice, if you recall?
Is this the bait caster setup you use for soft plastic lures?
No, the rod I had here is slightly heavier and a couple inches shorter. It’s the one I mostly throw topwater lures with.
@@ndyakangler what would you recommend?
Isn’t it about time that thumb nail dropped off🤔
Most of it came off the other day. There will be a few more videos until I get to yesterdays footage though.
fish only had one eye, bruh. What kind of pirate waters are you in?!
Whats your biggest smallie caught?
6-2, 22 3/8”
Thanks
You are using your paddle backwards.
Looked good to me. There’s a noticeable difference if I have the paddle backwards, even having it upside down I can usually notice the slightly less resistance on my paddle strike.
What’s the biggest Smallmouth you ever caught?
Man, these UA-cam adds are getting so bad
