My brother's best friend, J, was a friend of Newman's daughter at horse camp in the 70s. One day J fell off a horse. A hand reached through the fence to help her up. It was Newman's. He had brought his friend Robert Redford. Next thing she knew, she was in the back seat of a VW Bug with Newman's daughter and Paul and Robert up front. This was the era shortly after the release of Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid. They went out to eat and were treated like royalty. (J was also a friend of Robin Williams. She had served as a consultant for Awakenings.)

Dodd vs. Duffy was in 1970, so when Newman made these remarks the Democrats were still fighting racism inside the party. You only need to think back to 1964 when Goldwater vs. Johnson demonstrated how partisan things were and then consider 1968 when the country almost disintegrated. Today, there is no such thing as a moderate Republican. Every GOP senator and congressman in the Northeast was a moderate back then. You can find more folks with differing life experiences and perspectives on the left than the right, which skews older and is overwhelmingly White, Christian and heterosexual. The right doesn't really have the numbers on their side on a national level, and as many folks' views have increasingly shifted to the progressive side on issues like healthcare, marriage equality, reproductive rights, gun control, etc, the right has increasingly resorted to inflaming the tribalist fears of their base. Trump has effectively replaced GOP dog whistle politics with a full blown bull horn.

How relevant. We have to crack the machinery - so our vote goes from downstairs to upstairs. Unreal. THIS INTERVIEW WAS 50 YEARS AGO and we're talking about the same shit still!~ are we New England? Are we serfs? We got this. We have to

@Christian Tompkins The New York media slammed him when he was a Democrat no less than they do now.
Also, it's not slander when it's true.
The man was always a scumbag con artist...that, of course, is imo.

    • @ZOOTSUITBEATNICK1

@Christian Tompkins Actually, Chris, he was called a racist during the Central Park 5 controversy as well as for his actions as a lessor to non-whites long before his entry into electoral politics, back when he was a Dem..
CNN is interested in ratings, which Trump always pulled, and is hardly politically left or progressive.
The less said about Piers Morgan, the better...a waste of time, imo.

@Christian Tompkins You can make all the excuses you want, just go over what he said about that issue as well as his birther crap re: Obama (Who I didn't vote for and dislike.) Look at the way he dealt with minorities as a landlord, not that he was good with whites, but he was worse with blacks.
As for the vid clip...do you actually expect him to admit he's a racist or the like?
Listen, you like/support the man...fine...it's your right...but don't lie to yourself and others about him.

He's doesn't simply have pretty eyes. If you read deeper than the absolute surface, you'd see that he has high intelligence and has a very well regulated emotional intelligence. He's very articulate and wanted to use his popularity to spread awareness of issues he believed to be important. He may not have dramatically changed the world, but his influence has left an incredible legacy of hard work, charity, dedication, humbleness, and activism for those in need.
