This is such a solid, informative video. I'm an instructor and so many if my students struggle with buying the right board. I'm definitely going to direct them to this video. What's particularly helpful is you describe the profile and then explain what that means practically as a rider and who might/might not benefit from it. One of my biggest issues with snowboard companies is that they use so much jargon that it's even hard for me to understand and I've been boarding for 20 years. So I don't blame people who are new to the sport for being intimidated. This is will help a lot I think.
Awesome, love it, send them our way! I think the actual issue with the jargon comes down to the legality of companies' trademark on terms, which can make things confusing for a lot of people. That's why you'll see all these different names for hybrid shapes.
Instructor here too. I agree 100%. Companies always say the same: all the boards are amazing for everything/everyone. I am sick of it because it's not true, obviously. Then, they all use that jargon to avoid the copyright of something, like the "magnetraction". So they rename it followed by the word 'technology' lol. Also with cambers, they invent new terms to describe what already exists: "this board has our special zippity zip zippity zap hippity hoppity camber technology"... Dude, is a classic camber for fks sake.
Also, I don't know what's the point of describing a classic camber and saying that there is rocker in the nose and tail. Of course there's rocker, otherwise it would be unrideable. It's like companies need to add BS for you to be amazed or something.
I would say one thing you missed is that the hybrid boards is that they float better in powder and does not require as much quad power to keep the nose up.
Yeah, I just got sb#16 - uw170 skunk ape. I might hate it, but in France last season I was getting onto switch powder carving. Which I suspect the skunk will excel at... Hopefully!
I hated the edge hold and flat basing my first board - the gnu banana. Would never buy again.

I've been riding my K2 spitfire 155 and K2 plasma V8 bindings since 2002. Taken VERY good care of it (with years of tuning and lots of p-tex lol). It has a flat profile. carves super hard and it's ultra responsive on turns. Only downside is my deck is limited to the slope runs. Park rides, ollies and trick jumps are tough because you don't get that 'pop' or stability on your landings that you need from the camber profile.

Nice video. Another pro point for the rocker is that it floats in powder. Even with a small rocker I have to use much less energy than with my camber board. Therefore I would not say a rocker is just for beginners. It is a fun park and powder machine which is also perfect for jibs and butters.
Thank you for this! I just bought an ultimate ride Salomon board and I had a learning curve but now I enjoy. It's my first season owning a board and this is my first board. But I do feel pretty good about snowboarding now because of starting with this type of board.

Always rode customs or the custom x growing up and was hesitant to try any rocker profiles, but I’m so glad I got a deep thinker last year. Just ordered a straight chuter for next year. it’s just so nice riding soft snow with that rocker in the nose! Only time I felt the board didn’t perform as well was riding one footed on hard snow. Super helpful explanation, always like your vids!
If you liked the Custom X, you should really enjoy the Straight Chuter for all mountain ripping.

I learnt on a regular camber, outgrew it, been on a burton amplifier for the last 2 years now, which is flat base. So far love it but my next board is definitely going to be a camber again

Great video. You do a really good job with these breaking down details into simple to understand terms. I'm older and have been riding for 25 years, technology has changed a ton and I think the key to evolution is being open minded. I moved from standard old school camber to a lib tech c2 profile and it was super helpful for me personally. It has allowed me to relax a bit more and have more fun without being hyper vigilant about catching an edge, but when I want to bomb I can. Certainly the old school camber would out race my hybrid but it's probably good to have a bit of a governor on this old and broken body! I see a lot of comments saying what the right board is, the right board is the one that allows you personally to have the best time...

I'm 55. My first snowboard was a Burton Backhill in 1981 when I was 12 (similar to the earlier Burton Snurfer version you have in the background). I haven't been snowboarding in forever and it's fun to come here and see the the incredible advances. These boards are so easy to ride compared to those old maple planks.
They really are, there's so much better tech that makes riding boards earier than 10 years ago let alone 40 haha

I have ridden many different profiles. Up to recently my favorite was the Bataleon Global Warmer with the 3BT - such a playful fun board. Similar to the Evil Twin. Then my friends at Norespect Wakeboards started building custom snowboards and convinced me to try a slightly wide mild camber board. The pop and stability are insane. I was having issues with the Lobster/Bataleon 3BT in icy conditions, which are common here. So it was interesting to see this review and I do agree that camber is a lot of fun and can advance you to next level riding. While I prefer big mountain riding, there are no mountains here so mostly ride park.

I LOVE my 2016 Roxy XOXO BTX with magnitraction, and it's sooo hard to find another board like it. BTX (or C2) with Flex 2/10 seems out of style...
I wisb I had snagged rocker-dominant C2 profile board before 2021 when Roxy switched to camber-dominant C3 ... because now I'm having the hardest time finding *the* board.
Check out the Gnu Ladies Choice, made from the same manufacturer as Roxy. If you want to advance your riding you'll want to upgrade from a 2/10 flex to give you more support anyway
My first board was the Elan Prodigy Rocker. Helped me progress with my turns, but over years I got more experienced and also wanted a more stable flex, so now I only ride full on camber boards.

The right shape for me has been the last shape Craig Kelly penned. The Oman and the Cascade. I still have two fresh in their wrappers. Now binding have come a long way in the last 10 years. I love the new binding technology.
It's all always getting better, that's why we get new gear haha. That's awesome you still have those two classics in the wrappers
definitely the regular camber boards took my heart riding a second (third or more) hand Rome anthem 2011. I learned to ollie this agressive board that sends u to the sky

I've been riding for a few seasons but bought my first board after season 2 a hybrid rocker with the libtech corrtado that you showed! i was having issues getting more aggressive and its interesting to see how this camber profile explains somewhat why when i try to get more aggressive the board isn't a fan. I switched boards with a friend and tried the salomon ultimate ride with a normal camber shape and just absolutely started flying down the mountain and felt a responsiveness that was just unparalleled to my ride and now i think ive kind of advanced past my current snowboard shape and want something that will pop and stay steadier and higher speeds! Being newer to the sport it is super cool to learn about all of this :)

My first board was a camber then I got a flat and now I have a Rome rocker reverb hybrid I like it the best for a do all board super pressable good in the park just a little loose on big jumps but good pop I’ve riden powder backcountry floats well with no set back also groomed triple blacks definitely stable enough for hard carving but is a sacrifice on response but gives you forgiveness in the park

Honestly, if you've been use to camber, you might not like Flying V
I'm a intermediate to advance rider who has ridden the kids version of the Burton custom, the process Flying V and the Nitro team true camber and I would say the camber boards are the absolut best boards you can get no matter what. Really stiff and stable but still responsive and a lot of pop
That's for sure. The Nitro Team has always been a solid board
My next board is gonna be a true camber. I can’t wait to get that pop and stability of it for humps

I’m ridding a 2020 capita every other board iv had has been old tech atleast before 2010 so this is my newest and most up to date set up. It’s got a zero camber in the middle than reverse at the tips. Before the old horrscope they used to be full rocker

I got from green to double blacks on traditional camber. When hybrid rocker became a thing i bought into it. Regretted it so much because I couldn't charge as hard as i did before. My favorite company is still clinging on their rocker designs. What a shame. Wish this video was out back then! Great job explaining

Strange, I find my Hybrid much faster than my Cambers ever were as you can isolate each foot for less drag, when you’re on your back door the front is off the snow. To each their own I guess. I’m a really heavy person though so I don’t need to charge into my edges to go fast.
Rode NS hybrid for longest time. Just got Ride Kink with Camber. 🤯 a whole new chapter of riding. Anyone who hasn’t ridin Camber…. Your missing out bad.

I bought an all mountain freestyle rocker as a beginner board but I must say that I can carve pretty well with it. Because of the flexibility I can also carve very short turns without too much trouble.

The only difference is you're not getting thrown into a new turn. Which I'd say is a preference, I'm not a fsn of that feature

So informative - Thank you! I'm wondering about the hybrids. How does the flying V compare to rocker/camber/rocker? I'm intermediate level wanting to progress and considering the Burton Yeasayer flying V and Capita Paradise specifically.
Most fun is Flat-Rocker. Very forgiving, great for buttering and spin tricks on groomers and shines in powder. Also you never catch an edge on these. My go to profile !

I've only ever rode camber but my son moved from a camber board to a flat rocker while he was at the end of a beginner stage (still sometimes afraid to link turns) and it opened up the sport for him. He now rides like a champ and I'm going to introduce him to my old camber speed demon - the Burton balance - this week. We'll see how it goes.
That's great to hear that the flat camber helped him. I would highly suggest not putting him on that Burton Balance though. Boards from 20 years ago were overbuilt, very aggressive, and hard to ride. A lot of people get caught in the nostalgia of old boards, but they are better left on the wall for appreciation.
@@SearchofSnowboarding He was on it yesterday and ripping! I have a Burton Vapor 156 (circa 2010) and the old Balance 156 (circa 1997) and riding them back to back the Balance was way faster, easier to carve with and had more pop. It also handled the chop of spring snow better. My old Burton custom bindings felt like a step down from the newer Cartels with the baseless frame though.
@SearchofSnowboarding what do you think is better for a beginner who wants to progress. A flat twin board (I ride switch) or the custom chamber Burton board that was mentioned in the video?
@@arlettm9407at the end of the day, there isn't one good answer. Even the rocker can be very good if you ride a lot of powder. A flat board will be less agressive so it should be easier to get comfortable with. I'd suggest you to rent a board with a similar profile for a day or two to see how it goes and pick the one you're the most comfortable with. Once you've progressed enough that you're fully comfortable, let's say with a flat board, you'll know whether it is enough for you or if you want the more agressive camber

I test rode a Inca Dual Chamber board in 2001 while I was snowboarding in New Zealand. They are made in USA and web site was Inca Empire but after about 2005 the web site was shut down and now seems company is no longer. Their board was describe like independent suspension similar to you car. All I can find now is companies describe this design as dual chamber or Hybrid Chamber (Burton Flying V) like in your video. Hard to find Inca boards in a size to suit me on Ebay or other online stores so am looking at something other brand like the Burton Flying V. Gives best type of ride I am looking for.
Yeah I would only look for something new that is similar. Boards are much easier to ride now then they were 20 years ago
I love the Burton Custom Flying V shape. It just flows nice while still having good solid carving contact. I've never ridden a full rocker board and my riding style doesnt suit it so it doesnt seem like im missing much there.
Yeah I would stick with Flying V if I were you, you'd probably feel out of control on a full rocker honestly

Hybrids all the way, can’t believe they aren’t more popular. Can’t believe a bend like Capita doesn’t make them. Rode Cambers all my life until getting a T. Rice and it just blows any Camber I’ve ridden out of the water. I find them so much more playful, because you can isolate each foot. I also feel like they’re way faster because leaning back the front is off the snow for less drag.
I think it also depends on a person's riding style, but it sounds like you've found the perfect choice for yourself

Rocker has one big Easter egg.
In early season, or late spring (or whole season here in outer Carpathian) there are many tree stumps, fallen trees, rocks, bushes and twigs under shallow snow. Rocker glides trough such stuff with ease. I mean, you want catch an edge that on fallen tree that was hidden under snow.

I just got a new Capita DOA. its my first board. im still a beginner... hopefully catching edges isnt a problem. i tend to do that a lot lol. imma take a lesson again i think. i tend to lean back instead of staying centered also... i gotta quit doing that. im excited about the board though. ive heard that its the best intermediate/advanced board for beginners, so thanks for reassuring me im not getting myself in too deep. :)
Yeah that board should be great for you. And even if you get just one lesson to start off your season, it will help you immensely
Either hybrid or classic for me, for do-it-all/freestyle boards. I love rocker or flat, but for pow only.
For splitboarding, well... I hike for an epic ride, not to reach the peak exhausted, so classic camber is the most comfortable and safe for skinning in my opinion. I have got a split bean and I love it, but is not the best option for long activities or steep skinning. For that I usually use a Salomon with classic camber and width, and it's much much better.
Totally, I'd say camber is really all you'd want for touring. All other profiles don't give you enough surface area for traction when skinning

So far the classic camber is my fav. But I love the science of making the board maneuver under my feet with only edge tweaks. So not looking for any rocker whatsoever, and hybrid not even so much there either.
I think I wanna go cambered for my next board, but I’d love some input/advice. Rn I’m thinking the 2024 Solomon Sleepwalker. I’d say I’m a beginner/intermediate boarder. I hit some jumps, I hit some features, I’m comfortable with speed, but I’m still working on putting it all together. That being said, I’m still trying to find my identity and what I like the most, but I’m leaning toward a park/freestyle board. I don’t think I ever need to hit crazy high jumps, so I don’t need anything with mega stability. But I really want to improve my freestyle, and I want to get more comfortable with features. Jumping is definitely my comfort zone right now. All this being said, I think the sleepwalker is my best option right now. Only downside is I’m not in love with how it looks😅I do like it, but I’d rather love something I pour $400 into. So… any suggestions?
My board is a hybrid (Burton Flying V) and I’m still just getting to know it. Years ago I had camber which was super fun. But when I asked for a board that would get me back into boarding and improving, it was recommended that I get this hybrid. I didn’t want to have to buy a new board if I got much better at riding. I’ll know more after this season. 🤷♀️
It's not necessarily a bad thing, but after this season you might know more about which you prefer

Examples would be Jones ultra flagship, ultra mind expander, or ultracraft

Hybrid is the perfect board for big Dudes we already have the speed so we don’t need the edging of the Camber. Anyone I know who doesn’t like Hybrids are smaller guys. I’d never touch anything again other than a Hybrid after getting one they’re just so playful. I also find because of the rocker you can isolate a foot to have less drag. My Hybrid rips way faster than my Camber, but I’m heavy so I think friction means more than carving for me. C2 Lib Tech for me for life’s
I been snowboarding 25 years. Camber is all we had. Went to flat, to rocker to hybrid. Rocker is probably my favorite for butters rails and pow but doesn't have much pop. Hybrid is not as loose but has mad pop. All depends on personal preference, conditions and riding style. Great video though.

Enjoyed riding a lib tech skate banana on my recent trip to Europe, which has a hybrid camber-rocker-camber and magnetraction. Went great in everything EXCEPT it hates being anywhere near flat so it was god awful around cat tracks where I needed to keep the speed up without turns and put the least amount of edge pressure possible, it was so squirrelly and catchy in that situation I ate it a couple of times on those narrow icy sections. I had the same thing with a previous board that had an agressive firm camber. Best all rounder for me was a board with flat to rocker profile and mid flex, I miss it.

Getting back into it after over a decade, I’m overwhelmed. I don’t recall having so many options when I bought my last board around 2005-2009. It happens to be a stiff K2 mix with a slight camber. I took it out last year and felt good, wasn’t sure if it was me or the board making turns feel like lots of work though. I fully intended to keep riding it this year but was convinced I’ll have a better time on a new board so I have a ride Saturday on layaway, camber but was on the fence about a lib tech cortado they had on clearance, which is hybrid.
I expect I’ll mainly be an all mountain rider, groomers, the odd pow day, icy spots not uncommon, play in the trees, likely no park. I did ride switch back in the day and really felt unsure about the Cortado being directional and the hybrid shape. My mountain has a fair bit of long flat connections and I was told some complaints around the hybrid were not feeling in control.

You should be great on the Saturday. You should find things will come back a lot easier on a new board rather than one that's almost 20 years old. Also I think it's best that you went with camber as that is what you'll be most accustomed to.

I just saw that there is hybrid rocker and hybrid camber. I don’t think I’d like the hybrid rocker that is the lib tech. Maybe I’ll demo some this year and try a hybrid camber but I think you’re right. Sticking with what I know is probably best for now. Thanks for your videos!

@@SearchofSnowboarding I rode a stiff, aggressive camber deck for years before picking up a Harpoon recently. Other than a little less stability on deep, high speed carves, the Harpoon is so much more maneuverable versatile and fun. Look for the rad dad wheelie-ing and 180 nose buttering all the greens and blues with his kids, that's me lol. Honestly, even the carving might be there once I get used to the different technique the Harpoon wants.
I learned on a stiff camber board (159w Salomon patrol) as camber was the only thing available and while it was not forgiving at all and is a fast board once I got the hang of it even though I’m still only intermediate but will do black runs on powder days it carves and comes out of it so fast it is really a joy when holding a rhythm. I bought a gnu 157.5 c2 riders choice about 4-5 years ago as everyone kept telling me full rocker is the way to go (and this is from good riders) but I didn’t want to go full rocker and was looking for something more versatile I could ride all day without getting worn out (the stiff camber does take a lot out of you) but so far I’ve only got to use it a handful of times and beginning to think I maybe made a mistake. I couldn’t get over how it never feels like your in control and holding a line and could never tell if it’s just me or if this is what they mean by float? I don’t know how that’s supposed to be better for a beginner when it just never actually feels like your in control. I definitely need to put more time on it but wish there were reviews like this at the time to better explain what each does rather than just hype up the latest. I guess worst case I have my powder day board (which I think hybrid is supposed to be better for) and just continue to use my OG camber board most of the time since it’s still in great shape.
I think you would really enjoy a newer board with camber. Aside from the camber profile boards that were made during the time of your Patrol were overbuilt and pretty hard to ride. Boards are much easier to ride now which is why I think camber is better than ever now
I almost bought a hybrid to get back into the sport but in store the rep kept using the word float and playful and it worried me that i would feel how you described, not in control. My last board and all I know was/ is a stiff slight camber k2 from around 2005-2008. I put a board with medium flex and camber on layaway hoping I’ve made the right choice. I can’t have multiple boards at least not this year. I need to feel control not “float” whatever that means haha
@@stephaniesochan5273 so actually this season was epic and I got to put a lot more time on the board and now I completely love it. It took a bit to get used to it as it is looser but then I watched another video about how to get them to hold an edge and how you ride them differently by just using heels and toe and not bending your knees in, that accompanied by steering with the front a bit more and my problems were solved. Ended up liking it so much I bought a replacement for my cambered freeride board with the same profile (gnu hyper 160) for bigger powder days. Way less strain on my knees and less catchy.

I love my camber, got 1sesion with rocker, 2nd sesion tried out camber, and didn't switch ever since.
Now what i'm wondering about after your video is a setback camber profile. Is it going to provide me with the same amount of agression and stability as a regular camber at high speeds? or is it a bit on the looser side because of that rocker nose?
