This was a cool concept and cool execution. I always felt the walking animation in SMB 2 (USA) was weird after learning it was 2 frames but I would have prefered them using that old one rather than the new 3 frame walk cycle.
The consistent and fluid animation and controls of Super Mario Maker 2 makes it very tricky to switch back to the original versions of the games as each is different, and Yoshi's Island's movement can feel like both ice and glue simultaneously at times.

What is funny is that, in my opinion, despite having more frames, all the newer runcycles look a bit more awkward in comparison to the original two sprite animation from the NES. Really proves your point on your video about good keyframes being more important than the number of sprites.
Yeah I really don't like Nintendo 'modern-izing' everything in the retro styles in mario maker. and then making the other styles lower quality, like how the cloud in nsmbu is just one sprite that never changes, where as in the actual nsmb game it's very high quality, it's animated, and it turns when mario turns (while he's riding it) And because of this it feels more special when you're on it, while in Maker it feels like a knockoff. A few examples of the 'modern-izing' is SMB2 mario's walk cycles, shells in mario 1 & 3 have sliding animations (they did not in the original), Bowser in Mario World has his modern design, and more. I just don't like it, it feels off whenever I notice the changes.
I think the animations in NSMBU is more of a technical thing, as many of the enemy animations are at a lower frame rate, too. I think this is because they're 'baked in' animations instead of running in real time. I don't think it's deliberate, it might be some sort of limitation.
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy Yeah that's what I meant. I think Maker is capable of doing it, since a port of NSMB is on the same console, I just think Nintendo didn't think to put too much work into a single style when there's 4 more, so instead they make the cloud a static image.
