Kate Bush is more than an "original"; she is an enigma beyond measure.
Some people don't "get" her, and that's too bad, because she is an artist of exceptional vision.

    • @DrMackSplackem

I think I 'got' her upon hearing the very first chord of "Deeper Understanding". She's a different type of artist for sure. I love how she always took such wild chances. Even though I can't get fully on board with some of her trips, I'd gladly take a million 'Violin's for one "Babooshka", "Fullhouse", or especially "Symphony In Blue".

I couldn't stand her or her music in the 70's, and I hate it now. I'm all for "experimental", but she is STRICTLY "emperor's new clothes," meaning, she sucks.

She has, of course worked many times with Gabriel - he introduced her to the Fairlight. She was also a big fan of Bowie, they were both students of Lindsay Kemp and Kate was at the last Ziggy Stardust concert at Hammersmith Odeon in 1973.

Cant agree tbh her record sales throughout history prove otherwise. Everything shes done has been bought World wide by millions. I think people confuse under rated with not in the public eye, but it was Kate herself who chose to be out of the fake limelight of popular culture.

@@SuperBroonie that's a great point but I believe she has influenced so many people. Kinda like miles Davis especially during the 70s the general public for the most part didn't like what he was doing but look how he influenced so many musicians and music. I listen to Kate now and am amazed at what she did back then. When I heard her back in the 70s for the first time she twisted my ears in a big way. I never heard anything like it. I was amazed and a lifelong fan after that.
When I heard mile's bitches brew I didn't understand what he was doing at first but now all of his 70s recordings I have and love them all. Wuthering Heights - It was a sound and style that was completely unheard before. A sensation. It appeared as if she did not have a vocal cord, she had rubber bands in there.
The control she has over her voice even nowadays is astonishing. There is nothing accidentally, and all is emotion put into sound. One of the UK's best and most relevant artists.

Here in the US, I first saw Kate’s performance on PBS in the early 80’s (only PBS would carry shows from GB like Dr. Who, Monty Python, Benny Hill, etc.). I was shocked at how original Kate was, so I immediately purchased the videotape (called “Live at the Hammersmith Odeon”) which in those days cost $100 (!). Eventually I ended up with TWO videotapes of this performance (one in MONO and the other in beautiful STEREO). Unfortunately, here in the States we never got DVDs of her performances. So I ripped the stereo videotape and put it on DVD. I even sent a copy of the DVD to Kate 😂.

Kate was absolutely brilliant and unique in every way. When Hounds of Love came out and "Running Up That Hill" was getting airplay I was totally amazed at the sound she was getting. I loved virtually every track on that album and still occasionally play it. I bought her previous work and it was obvious how she got signed, the talent was obvious from the start.
I know that a lot of people today will never "get" Wuthering Heights, or Babooshka, or even Army Dreaming, but they were really good.
She was featured in Keyboard magazine, and I still remember that awesome picture of her sitting in front of her Fairlight, looking like the interviewers showed up early and woke her up...

I went with my girlfriend (now my wife) and my younger sister. I remember the pubs we went in beforehand. We were asked on numerous occasions if we had any spare tickets for the concert, such was the demand to see Kate. I remember taking half a day off work when the tickets went on sale and queueing outside the Empire for ages (well before the days of buying tickets online). My wife (a Kate look-a-like) still has the concert programme which cost - wait for it - £1. Ten years ago, she was offered £250 for it. If only we'd have bought a few on the night. They are extremely rare and sought-after, those original concert programmes. Of course, she didn't sell it. All great memories of an awesome performer. Unfortunately, I tried but failed to get tickets for her Hammersmith shows a few years back, but I comfort myself that I was there at her first ever live show. Then last year I watched a documentary about Kate Bush on UA-cam, after which I binge-watched everything I could find on UA-cam about her. I admit that I was also a bit smitten with her absolute beauty. And the way she could pop her eyes!! My favorites of hers are "Wow" (knocks me out that a musical artist should write a song about the humiliations and rigors of trying to make it as an actor) and "Sat In Your Lap" (bizarre, frenetic song -- about acquiring knowledge! -- with wild music video). I recall hearing, long ago, "Running Up That Hill" on the radio ... which charted briefly here in the states. Of course nobody here knew how utterly great she was. In my never-to-be-humble opinion, Kate can knock Madonna of the charts whenever she wants.

So many things about her seem so impossible, how could such highly evolved quality appear at so young an age in the writing and delivery, arrangements, performances. How can an artist be so ON POINT ALL THE TIME?? . Baffling....breathtaking...beautiful. everyone who loves music should study her..

Goosebumps! That’s the way a true artist does it. One of my favorite guitar solos at the end. I even love the old black and white WH film as a guilty pleasure from over the years.

I remember hearing Wuthering Heights for the first time and immediately went out and bought the single. Kate was unique and what a blessing that David Gilmore helped her to get started. Many of us remember artists but never fully understand the history behind their journey. Well done Fil and thank you for enlightening us once again.

As a teenager, hated this song on it's release, now in my fifties I appreciate the unique talent that is Kate Bush... She is an enigma and under appreciated... More should know her and of the body of work she has produced... Also a very strikingly beautiful woman, I may not have appreciated her music as a teen but I always knew how stunning she was...

Oh my Lord! Thank you so much Fil! When I saw the notification I went, "Ahhhhhh! Kate Bush!!! Fil is doing an analyses on Kate Bush! Ahhhh!!!!" . Kate Bush has been one of my very most favorite female artists ever since I was a kid in the early 80s. I have ALL of her albums! And I've taped just about every one of her videos off of MTV and when "Night Flight" aired her video profile. I think she is one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. And one of the most talented, most brilliant singer/songwriters EVER! Whoo! I sound like some sort of an obsessed fan, eh? Okay, calm down Mona, calm down. Yeesh! By the way Fil, still looking mighty handsome there! Thanks again for the fab Kate Bush analyses video!😁💖🙏🌺🐈🎶🎸🎼🎧🎵🎤✌🍀

People are so divided on her. I sent a link to my cousin...he hates her!
I love her. Her voice in the chorus is absolutely angelic. The solo ending is actually much better in this live performance than the recorded version imo.
I just listened to the studio version on Bose headphones, and the bass playing is very tasteful also. The song is just a gem!

An amazing and very unique artist. For those who did not enjoy this, be sure to check out her Hounds of Love album which is nearly guaranteed to change your mind. Some think of her as a Bjork influence but KB's vocals are far beyond Bjork's and the musical style are completely different. Excellent analysis of another extremely important artist that has m demonstrated consistent quality throughout her career. Thanks Fil!

    Kate Bush, fretless vocals?
I have Kate Bush on vinyl, awesome!
When I was a youth I listened to Dead Kennedys, Skinny Puppy and Kate Bush a.o.
    I actually still do!
The masterpiece of Kate is imho the b-side of Hounds of Love, just epic. Must have album.

Wow! What a great video! The first song of Kate's I ever heard. I bought the 45 a bit after it came out. It was in a bin of 45's that stores had in those days. I'd never heard of her, but often bought 45's by bands just to try new music. The first time I played it I thought something was wrong with my record players speed as her vocal was so high! It took a few listens for me to enjoy her voice, but it was worthwhile. She's a great artist.

Yes, I started hearing Kate Bush on the radio in 2022 singing "Running Up That Hill" and was wondering what was going on. I had forgotten about Kate till then loving hearing the song again. I learned online it was for the new series of "Stranger Things", which I have not started seeing yet. I started looking Kate up on UA-cam and tonight seen you had her on your program. I did not get to listen to Kate or see her on TV, for working, naval ships, and visiting countries, to a point I had forgotten all about her. I loved her voice, dancing, and music being to me different and exciting listening too. Thanks, Fil for this and other artist you highlight.

My favorite female artist. I actually remember the exact moment I "discovered" her. She had just released "the Dreaming" and Tower Records had her album on display. I had never heard of her but the cover of the album caught my eye. Albums were cheap back then so I bought it just to check it out (plus Tower had a policy back then that if you didn't like the album you could return so how could you lose!). When I hear people criticizing this album I am surprised because upon listening to it I was just absolutely blown away - - it was like nothing I had ever heard before. I went back to Tower and bought every one of her albums and have been an ardent fan ever since. Her music and creativity is so unique and original. It is a shame that she was never given any radio play to expose her to the masses so I thank Heaven that places like Tower Records existed back then and laid albums out to be seen and discovered. It is such a shame that they are gone and I think that is one of the reasons why today's general public has such narrow and limited tastes in music - - they can only know what they are exposed to by the media which unfortunately now cares only about the money and focuses on flash over substance which has led to the all to apparent dearth in true musicianship and talent.

Yes, that guitar section later in Wuthering Heights is magnificent. (Alas, the 1986 version lacks it, and it's mainly for that reason that I prefer the original.) Even as someone who knows very little about guitar, I totally get its multi-layered beauty.

I've been saving this one. I remember the first time I heard her in the USA. It was on Saturday Night Live in 1978. I was reading Wuthering Heights in school and that song got me understanding that book like nothing else. Her voice is so ethereal. I had all her albums. Her themes, her stories, her voice. Such a talent. I never got to see her in person as it seems she did not like to tour so far from home. It would be neat if you compared Pat Benatar's version of Wuthering Heights to Kate's.

I'd read about Kate in magazines but, of course, they never played her music in the U.S. just yet. At first, I thought she was "ok". Then, went and got The Dreaming and was just blown away. Same with Hounds of Love - blew my mind!! Then, I just loved anything of hers. It was like I had to get into her groove before I could understand her style. I actually love that she's pretty much legendary AND nowhere close to being mainstream.
