Enjoy watching the evolution of one of the most spectacular Olympic disciplines - The Balance Beam! In the early days of women's artistic gymnastics, the beam was based more on dance than on tumbling. In the 1960s, the most difficult acrobatic skill performed by the average Olympic gymnast was a back handspring. The Balance Beam difficulty began to increase dramatically in the 1970s. Olga Korbut and Nadia Comăneci pioneered advanced tumbling combinations and aerial skills on beam; other athletes and coaches began to follow suit. The change was also facilitated by the transition from wooden beams to safer, less slippery models with suede-covered surfaces. By the mid-1980s, top gymnasts routinely performed flight series and multiple aerial elements on beam. Today, balance beam routines still consist of a mixture of acrobatic skills, dance elements, leaps, and poses, but with significantly greater difficulty. It is also an individual medal competition in the Olympics.

I like how for comaneci they put both the compulsory and the optional routines since she won twice in a row, absolute icon of the sport!
Now with Biden in presidency we hope to see more minorities in gymnastics
@@hugodaniel8975yeah of course we’ll see them as long as they’re as good or better than the girls that are not minorities.
@@josiefa5852 yes. It’s important to understand that the Olympics need to be favourable towards the best of the best but not always the minorities if they are not good. It shouldn’t be a pity party but everyone should always be introduced to any sport.
@@trendymaths2467 completely agree, but I think a lot of people believe minorities aren’t given the same opportunity in this sport simply because they are minorities. I don’t think that’s true.
@@hugodaniel8975 What does that have to do with gymnastics?
Romania brought such a big contribution in this sport. I want to see them up again, cause it's one of the greatest gymnastics nation.
Wow, I'm so proud seeing Romania's flag many times up there 🇷🇴
I love Olga Korbut!
I would love if wolf turns were finished like this - very elegant. 1:20
I think adding that ending would be the only way I would ever like that skill. The extension shown here is gorgeous!
That was gorgeous!
@@elgenewaynedequit8700 Probably the same d score as the turn because it’s just a lunge into a split - just brownie points for artistry :-P
Yes...arms flail all over the place today
I wish they would just just stop performing the wolf turns they look ugly, and no one does them any good anyway.
Excellent! These gymnasts of the past have the most beautiful lines. They were all so smooth with straight legs and toes always pointed.
I think this sport is by far the most impressing and risky of all the olympic sports... I feel like every single move is risking breaking your neck but looks so impressive~
synchronized swimming? but i do have to say it is risky but not the most risky
i think show jumping, skateboarding, and diving r also pretty risky
@@chloe4317 yea but still
They where all great! Every single gymnast had their own style and grace
Feels like I'm watching a time capsule filled with amazing Olympians
we all are. :)
Thumbnail speaks who's legend, Nadia Comenaci is sensational. Catalina Ponor is another best beam balance performer - most beautiful lady. Offcourse Olga Korbut is amazing too. These 3 ladies are classy.
Beautiful. This is a case where we can see the tremendous evolution of the athletes because the beam stayed basically the same.
I believe it got softer and more springy
A suede cover was added in the early 1980s to make the beam less slippery and extra springs were added at around the same time. Gymnasts before 1980 could not have done the kind of acrobatics we see today. That's one of the reasons you can see such a dramatic difference in difficulty starting in the 80s (the other reason is evolution in gymnasts' skill).
Shannon Miller an absolute amazing athlete, a joy to watch and rock solid! Love her!
I agree 100%!!
Beautiful
Shannon Miller is a star ❤️🌟
Also I know the video is about the champions, yet I wish Vika Komova could be here too. 😢
I read about Nadia Comaneci scoring a perfect 10 when I was in school..
Yeah because her routine was simple compared to the routines from now.
@@josiefa5852 oh accha. I have no idea actually. In our country this genre is not that much popularized.
@@josiefa5852 her routine was simple compared to now. But back in her days that was a difficult routine. But in the end whatever she did was simply perfect.
@@josiefa5852 That's not the reason why she go 10 points but ok...
In 1976 at the age of 14, Comăneci was the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10.0 at the Olympic Games. At the same Games (1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal), she received six more perfect 10s for events en route to winning three gold medals
4:25 extraordinary!
Wow I’m so happy to see some hungarian gymnasts in this😍😍🇭🇺
One word: Elegant
Korbut each and every time ❤
that was both beautiful and slightly terrifying at the same time
We need one of these videos
for every event
YES FOR SURE! :)
one cool thing about olympics is that it just pushes the sports even further beyond
Back when doing cartwheels on balance beams were a thing :)
Romanians won 5 five times balance beam. And 4 times consecutive 👏👏
Un immense MERCI pour voir ttes ces prouesses magnifiques
Romania owns the beam. Wow
Not now the Americans do
@@ainelawlor5755 the Americans are good but they have more balance issues
Cele mai bune, România 😘😘
@@ainelawlor5755 No, I don't feel they ever did and they still don't. Romania and China are the queens of the beam.
@@rowomengymnastics7303 i disagree the Americans have siome billes on there team so she always brings home gold
Stiil for me sanne wevers has the most beautiful routine ,her routine just so beautiful and elegant
Shawn Johnson 😍
Truly amazing
So talented👍👍👍
Sanne Wevers' beam mount is something else. I love it.
Beautiful. 😊❤️
So beautiful, it's just simply amazing 😍
Absolute talent!!!
They all make it so easy I remember doing this in school but could never land on the beem kept falling off
Beautiful... 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Love this video, Olympic Channel.
OMG Sanne Wevers YESSSS! Spin queen!
I would've loved if they put Kui Yuanyuan's layout full in 1996 eventhough she didn't win a medal. Great video nonetheless!
Amazing examples of guts and precision for their day! Makes me wish my d.o.b was 1927....and...
Fantastic
awesome watching the progression through the years have we reached a point with simone where you cant really be any better lol?
So proud of Guan Chenchen now added to all these amazing Olympic champions after winning the title in Tokyo 2021. Respect for her officially being the second Chinese female to win the gold medal after Liu Xuan in 2000. Hope she becomes World Champion to possibly becoming the first Chinese to win Olympic and World titles on this event and become the second Chinese to win Olympic Gold and a medal at Worlds after Xuan’s victories at 2000 and 1996 Worlds bronze😁
I like how they put the years in order
Wonderful 😍😌👏
I love it!!!!
BEAUTIFUL
That’s amaze ing
Love it
Very happy to see Shawn Johnson-East on in the grouping... Shocked Simone Biles wasn't on here with all the amazing talent shown.
BB is not her best event, that's why. She's shining on floor and vault, but others are more talented on beam.
Wao increíble vídeo 👍🏼
yes! only the best ❤️
I love you all my sisters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I only wish that Yang Bo had won gold. She just could never put a clean routine together when it really mattered. Such a shame because she's the epitome of an iconic balance beam routine
Всем этим девушкам я аплодирую стоя!!! Без разницы кто из них какой нации.
Сам факт, что они дошли до такого уровня
3:00 that is saaaatisfying
Nadia Comaneci was brilliant but Olga Korbut was her inspiration
But Nadia has more elegance, more grace!!!
@@mihaelaserdenciuc8833 Yes also I think, I like Olga more on the bars, she was amazing, daring and even hj did not see anyone do the same
tutte meravigliose
why am i crying
beam really peaked in the 90s it never got better save for Ponor carrying it into the 00s
I agree, it lost the artistry and smooth lines and has become a powerhouse/difficulty event.
i love it 💜💜

Pleased never forget:All these/those girls were tortured through/by their trainers
Shawn Johnson's coach was really good to her. She says that Chow is like her second Dad
Not all gymnasts are treated poorly... It is disgusting how many of them are treated, but just as many have coaches who have become family.
Not all. There are abusive coaches but it is becoming much less frequent. There are much stricter rules.
The real progression is how far they arch their backs
I usually do this at 0500 in the morning.😎😃😃😂
Seane' s triple turn....Wow
Умничка
Awesome performance, but still Nadia is different being the youngest first perfect 10 Gymnast.
name of song pls?
Vive La Roumanie !

sheeeesh
Nastia should’ve been included here tho 😿

Who’s the one in 0.06?
1:35 just need this,
it seems like anyone living today would have won the first olympic video!
Las Rumanas evolucionaron este aparato
😊😘😘👏
how did they do that?
Goood 😍
the psyche event in women's Gymnastics
by seeing this we want to represent Indian team 🇮🇳🇮🇳 jai hind
The leotards were very different then what they are now...Exp back on 1956 and before...
Can anyone tell me why the girls are required to arch their backs over and over again?
And Svetlana Corkina????
Korkina won uneven bars not the beam
No Shushunova??? Seriously??
This video shows the evolution of the beam work by showing the olympic champions of that apparatus. Shushu was an excelent gymnast but she ended with the silver medal, behind, clearly shown in this video, of Silivaş.
@@MaJo-je8cs Yeah, you're right, fair point.
Where is Dominique Dawes ?
Only gold medal winners in this vid.
@@CarrieBHS .. Dominique did win a gold medal , and she was robbed at the Barcelona Olympics !
@@dydydufjfjfuf4500 I’ll spell it out more clearly. This video only contained gold medal winners in the balance beam event finals at the Olympic Games. Dominique Dawes is not in that group.
Есди бы страховка была, то все было бы отлично
The more recent ones are NOT as graceful as the older ones. The new ones are acrobats the older ones like a ballerina.
Yi sab dd sports per nahi dekhya gaya 🙄🙄🙄
Whatever. If I’m editing this video, we end it with clips from 1920. Thee end.
🙂🙌🔮👏👏👏🙏👍
"Today's youth is so lazy and decadent"
Huh? What do you mean?
Nadia Comaned ,so beautiful!!!! Perfect girl!!!!
Honestly the modern girls look very stiff ! Every of their contacts look so heavy and painful
Not to be rude, but a bit of a joke. When you see what was done, then and not.
"Mary Lou Retton catapulted to international fame by winning the All around Gold Medal in Women's Gymnastics at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles - becoming the first American woman ever to win a gold medal in gymnastics. She is the first American ever to win the Olympic All Around Title."
No Carly Patterson arabians? And you should have at least one gymnast who throws a standing back tuck with a full twist if you want to show more evolution.
You forgot to include the socialist emblem on Romania's flag at 1:49, 2:00, 2:17 and 2:29
It's no longer socialist, so what's the point?
@@ela5720. Because, for the time, they were “socialist”.
It’s lost elegance in recent years-too much acrobatics; it shouldn’t look like a floor routine!
