- The “Ballad of the Green Mountain Boys” (also known as “The Green Mountaineer”) is a Vermont folk ballad in honor of the Green Mountain Boys, Vermont's revolutionary army during the American War of Independence. The lyrics come from the poem “The Song of the Vermonters, 1779” by John Greenleaf Whittier.
Until its admission to the union in 1791, what is now the US state of Vermont was an independent nation. In 1777, Vermont declared its independence from all claims by New Hampshire, New York, and any British jurisdiction (An armistice between Vermont and the United Kingdom was signed in 1781). Vermont, however, did have plans to join the future United States, though this was blocked by the Continental Congress, due to its dispute by New York. Nonetheless, the Vermonters themselves fought alongside the revolutionaries of the Thirteen Colonies until all victory was won.
On this day, 10 May, 1775, the Green Mountain Boys led by Ethan Allen captured Fort Ticonderoga. Although the action itself was not a major offensive, the capture of the fort held massive strategic importance. British units to the north and south of the fort were cut off from any communication, and all armaments captured within Ticonderoga's walls were transported to Boston, where they would be used used in the 10-month long siege of the city that had begun less than a month earlier.

Vermont NEEDS to bring back this flag. It's literally the most screamingly "Vermonter" thing ever
The Vermont National Guard still uses it
@@lauritorni4879 Fear the dear
What's funny is the flag is actually John Stark of New Hampshires flag
sadly the Civil War ruined a lot of state flags many were changed because they were trying to reduce state nationalism should defiantly bring a lot of them back

The provincial government of New Hampshire issued land grants in the area of what is now Vermont, however later New York would also issue land grants in Vermont. When settlers from New York arrived, a milita was established to protect what the previous settlers believed was their rightful land. Thus the Vermont Republic was born, it would continue to exist as an independent entity until it was eventually integrated into the United States.
I'm glad someone else knows the real history. Sadly Vermont has dove head first off a cliff and the spirit of Ethan Allen and the Green mountain boys no longer resonates outside of the mountain tops and backwoods of this state. I grew up in NH and felt it was more celebrated there and then than ever in Vermont's recent history. Truly sad.
It was written by John Greenleaf Whittier, a poet from Massachusetts in 1833. He was a great ballad poet, known as a Fire-side poet along with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. They are considered old fashion and dated.
What are other ballads I can listen to?
It was fire indeed
Holy shit based? Oklahoma approves.
Such a small state but such a badass song
Thank you for uploading this, very based :D
Vermont will always be my second favorite state, Only second to my maine. I love vermont.
I'm a Vermonter and I love Maine
in my opinion vermont is a really weird state, it's very liberal with a conservative lifestyle. it's weird
@@hi_scubs Vermont is both the physical and ideological mirror of it's neighbor, New Hampshire, which has more conservative politics but also a very "hippie" influenced culture.
@@hi_scubs too bad its not a conservative state cause id move to vermont if it was

Ah, classic Vermont. Lacks in sirens like Maine, but makes up for it with cool songs like this
I was born in the upper peninsula of Michigan but I grew up hearing stories of the Green Mountain Boys.
The old Republic of Vermont flag is very nice. I actually quite like how the stars are scattered like they are in the sky.
As a vermonter, I approve of this
This banger feels like something I would hear in a skyrim game or something.

I'm not a Democrat, I'm not an Independent, I'm not a Libertarian, I'm not an American. I AM A VERMONTER. "We owe no allegiance, we bow to no throne, our ruler is law, and the law is our own; our leaders themselves are our own fellow men, who can handle the sword and the scythe and the pen."
What is the name of the first painting in the video?
Thanks
We may to be calling for patriots to protect our lands a third time.

I pray the rest of the country understands what my family had to do to make all of us free. New England is the U.S.A. Vermont is awsome but New Hampshire is the one.

No gain for the legions of Hampshire and york! They claim our possessions the pitiful knaves! That's my message from vt
I'm from NH and I approve this message.
I had 2 past family members that were in the Green Mountain Boy militia. My grandfather lived in a cabin in New Hampshire till his passing.
