- Written by American poet John Greenleaf Wittier, this song reflects the attitude of Vermonters during the Revolutionary War. It is also known as "The Green Mountain Boys." This song can be found on my CD "Americana" which is available on iTunes at: itunes.apple.c... or at: tomroush.us
Beautiful old melody. Tom Roush, you are the best. Much appreciation here.
Thank you, Kelley!
I live in Vermont and will likely leave soon for the airforce, I really should get a Vermont battle flag
Nice. I joined the AF Reserve last year. You active or in the Guard base up in Burlington?

I am a Green Mountain Boy! Really enjoyed listening to this song. Makes me proud!
I was born here, I will die here. I will always be a green mountaineer.
What a history lesson, set to such beautiful music. I have the CD, and enjoy it very much. Thank you Tom, for the talent you share with us! :-)
Thank you for your generous compliments!
Yes Vermont! The only state in the Union never to have slavery!
Or require a pistol permit
What about Alaska?
@@JohnGisMe
Think he means of the original thirteen.
Alaska was the 49th?
@@huwzebediahthomas9193 Alaska was 49th, but The original 13 were Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. Vermont was 14, and Kentucky was 15.
They did have slaves pre-independence though. In fact, a few of the Green Mountain Boys did own slaves.
As a native vermonter I give this production 2 👍
Sehr schön gespielt und gesungen, wie alle Deine Lieder

It would be really nice if someday you could do Yankee Doodle. Also I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in hearing you sing Drink to me only with thine eyes (maybe) :)
Beautiful and melodious song Tom!!
An amazing voice.....Keep posting videos like these !! They're really fun to listen to and it's nice to get a feel for the rich history and culture and context that is behind each song!!
Thank you!
My 4th great grandfather was Israel Ellsworth Holliday, a Green Mountain Boy. Thank you for the song, I love it!
I love that so many people work to bring us music that couldn't have been recorded when it was made.
Music in general is awesome because regardless of what era, genre, or instrumentation is involved it brings people together. In this case, it kind of brings you a little closer to the human experiences of the past.
Be well, everyone ~♡
As a 7th generation Vermonter and having several family members who were in the Green Mountain Boys and several ancestors who were during the Revolution and Civil War, thank you! I joined the Army Guard as well, but not for Vermont.
It's my favourite for today !

If you’re still around, you should really put this on Spotify. Personally love this song, and it’s such a good rendition.
Right now, there’s only like two versions on Spotify one of which is acapella and the other of which is just frankly not super good.

Little know fact: Vermont was *not* one of the original 13 colonies. They were too independent to joint the 13. Eventually, they joined in 1791, because of the threat from bullying by British North America.
They were still technically Colonial territory because they seceded from New York and the crown. Vermont often referred to itself as the 14th Colony
